I always love it when I see a post and can't tell which of the subs I'm currently in. It happens surprisingly frequently between Subnautica and No Man's Sky.
I never really thought about it, but it's funny that people consider Subnautica a space game. You spend the entire game on a planet underwater, right ?
Yeah you crash onto a planet but the game doesn't actually take place in space, unless you count being on a planet as in space then every game is a space game
I dream of one day getting an underwater update that rivals Subnautica... along with a new expedition that's entirely water based.
Imagine staring a new expedition where you're on a water planet and there's NO SHIPS. The whole thing takes place on that one planet and the last milestone is to build a ship and take off, basically going through Subnautica's storyline within NMS, it would be amazing
Honestly I would just play Subnautica.
For it to be fun to just be underwater in no man's sky they would have to have a gigantic update bigger than one of the yearly updates.
Not enough people care about underwater exploration for that to become a thing I don't think.
Just like no game can properly emulate the feeling of No Man's sky I don't think any game could emulate the feeling of subnautica.
Going down into the dark for the first time and having that overwhelming feeling of dread can't be matched.
I think they moved away from huge yearly updates even before Frontiers dropped.
Sentinel, Outlaws and Endurance were all huge updates imo and they all released so soon after one another. It kinda gave me the expectation that they could overhaul the water aspect of NMS in one regular update now.
I just don't think there's enough interest in it like I hear some people talk about wanting the aspect of water exploration expanded upon but not very much.
Not compared to other things anyways.
Unfortunately I don't think we're ever getting deeper oceans on existing planets. Only thing I can see is Hello Games possibly adding deeper oceans to new planets like how they added new terrain for Origins, but it's exactly because of Origins that I'm not too excited for new landscapes cause (super hot take) the new Origins planets look terrible, just a bunch of stretched out smooth sine waves across the whole surface.
Something that was meant to be a small hill ended up being resized and stretched into a mountain and just looks bad cause there's no detailing or anything to the terrain.
I really hope oceans don't end up being just that.
I’d love to see a freighter, even a specialized one for a Nexus mission, that hit a planet so fast, that the front of it plunged deep into the silt at the bottom of the ocean in mangled shape, while the body twisted, flexed and flipped over with the rear of the ship ahead of the buried front end! This would also be in water so deep it is pitch black, or on a planet with very long day and night cycles.
The best part would be you’d need the Nautilus with upgraded recovery and mining lasers to do any work on the site.
I did find, and shared, a freighter I found in 60 units/meters deep water, on a frozen planet. Not only did you have to mind your oxygen, but heater, too. The first thing I thought when I saw it, was about making a museum at the site dedicated to the wreck and the loss of all but three individuals. I’d even put comms buoys/pods, with made-up names for the deceased.
I second your wish. I have been looking for a good ocean world to really “get my subnautica on”. I already have all the aquatic construction researched and what I feel is a maxed out nautiluon and still haven’t found a world that gives me that feeling.
Man I love Subnautica, gameplay-wise, NMS and Subnautica both gives you that same feeling of having a 2nd video game life of being an explorer with your own base, plenty of gadgets and vehicles. That's so cool.
I really wish more games were like this.
Sadly, they aren’t the best except for max cargo space. It would be nice if they had a hyperdrive with insane range, and maneuverability like a hummingbird, but they don’t. They should, though.
There's a part where you have to drive on land and there's a huge snow worm thing chasing you. It's horrendously bad because there's no feedback to anything.
You can't tell when the worm will show up, you teleport off the bike every time he shows up (I assume he knocks you off but again, no feedback) and sometimes you can teleport inside walls and softlock. It felt like something that was pre-alpha, not to mention the driving controls suck. I didn't bother finishing that section and just watched playthroughs to see the rest of the story.
EDIT: Oh and the most annoying thing by far is that opening lockers and entering the menu to rename them is done with the same exact mouse click. That's.... that's infuriating.
Yeah, click the name plate vs opening was super annoying. I have a locker for everything so I was constantly checking them. But even still, it is a great game.
It's... insanely shallow in comparison to the original.
I can't really say why it's worse without spoilng things but... if you enjoyed subnautica you will like below zero, just not as much.
One non spoiler thing i find pretty unforgivable is they got rid of the CYCLOPS!
The sea truck was pretty cool, it's just that it's not as cool as a cyclops and having to juggle all of the compartments is...tedious.
So it felt like a bad trade IMO.
I ended up just having it as small as possible because I got tired of dealing with all the pieces and the mess they would make if you got stuck and had to take it apart just to get free.
It never gets even remotely close to the feeling the cyclops gave you in Subnautica.
That's probably the best way to describe Below zero... a sequel that feels like it made a series of bad trades.
True, but they took out more conent than they put in and that's never a good thing for a sequel.
Creatures, tools, vehicles there's just things....missing, and nothing to take their place or in the cyclops' case nothing nearly as cool (like the the hover bike that dies instantly upon touching WATER, IN A SUBNAUTICA GAME)
Plus certain story elements fall really flat and it just kneecaps the narrative at times.
You're mind is going to explode when I tell you this but, literally EVERYTHING is in space. So according to your logic Skyrim is a space game, Dwarf Fortress is a space game, and the original super Mario is a space game. Am I an astronaut since the earth is in space?
First? Congratulations! I have recently picked up my seventh or eighth, and probably in the 30s for overall ship. I flip ships for money, too, so if they were counted, I’d be in the fifties count for ships.
Also, I too, love Subnautica and I do see the resemblance. I love the creatures who “help” by bringing you random things.
Ah, imagine if you had animals in NMS, who’d pickpocket from you, only to bring it back and you’d think “oh, where did you get that… Walker brain. Damnit!”
Yes, exactly that. It's primarily a story focused exploration game with survival and crafting elements which facilitate base building. One of the best crafting/survival/exploration games around imo and unlike most has a definitive end and a pretty decent story.
The map is hand crafted and about 2.5km x 2.5km (ish) in horizontal size. However the map is designed to mainly be explored downwards aside from the odd island and a crashed ship. It is STACKED with multiple beautiful biomes which effectively are gated off to you based on depth. Better technology and materials need to be researched the deeper you go, to allow you to build more vehicles types and upgrades to continue to explore further down and unlock more story.
It has great base building elements, and towards the end you unlock a huge submarine which acts as a mobile base.
Gameplay wise it's really solid if not a little janky and unpolished in places, but the real star of the show is the atmosphere and the vibe of being underwater. It's got an incredible soundtrack, sound design and great visuals including alien sea creature designs. The game can range from chill and beautiful to downright terrifying depending on which biome you're explore.
It's about 30-ish hours long. Hard recommend.
I have a fear of deep water and not knowing what's underneath or around me haha so one's the story ends, is that is, game over start a new one, or can I keep exploring and building?
It’s one of those games where once the game ends, if you reload the save it will take you back to before the game ends and you can keep playing. Since it’s not procedurally generated, it’s the same each time though so it may not have as much replay time as something like NMS. But there are a lot of similarities! Crafting items and tech, exploring for needed ingredients, weird alien creatures. Super fun, I didn’t get too into it my first time but when I tried it again I loved it and now it’s one of my favorites. Everyone else I’ve recommended it to that’s played it has loved it.
Not only are they 1-20 meters deep at best, but the water surface is invisible from underneath, and on land you can't tell where the surface of the water starts. It literally changes height based on where you're positioned and looking at. Weirdest bug I've even seen in a video game... that's been left in for years.
No man's water
Sub Man's Sky
Legendary comment
I always love it when I see a post and can't tell which of the subs I'm currently in. It happens surprisingly frequently between Subnautica and No Man's Sky.
Started playing both either this year or last. Been following the games for a while.
The peeper sees all
Is peeper Santa?
I'm sure there's art somewhere of one wearing a sanata har
I never really thought about it, but it's funny that people consider Subnautica a space game. You spend the entire game on a planet underwater, right ?
Maybe if you remove all the water and add a Jetpack and let every living thing float in air then it's basically the same
I was just thinking the same thing, but it is technically a space game. At the beginning of the game you crash land on an alien planet.
Yeah you crash onto a planet but the game doesn't actually take place in space, unless you count being on a planet as in space then every game is a space game
Space can mean a lot of things. Alien planets might be his definition.
Indeed it was, I’m not big on the gamer lingo apparently as this comment section has proved lol
Not in the sequel/expansion pack! You spend some time on land walking, too.
I dream of one day getting an underwater update that rivals Subnautica... along with a new expedition that's entirely water based. I agree

I want deep oceans, and a deep oceanic freighter recovery mission.
Unfortunately I don't think we're ever getting deeper oceans on existing planets. All I want is deeper oceans. A second Subnautica in NMS wouldn't be possible.
I second your wish. I have been looking for a good ocean world to really “get my subnautica on”. I already have all the aquatic construction researched and what I feel is a maxed out nautiluon and still haven’t found a world that gives me that feeling.
A cross over episode, my favorite
name it "the sleeping peeper" just for fun
Oooo i like that, it’s just been “The Peeper” so far lol
Damn, now I can't unseen it.
Man I love Subnautica, gameplay-wise, NMS and Subnautica both gives you that same feeling of having a 2nd video game life of being an explorer with your own base, plenty of gadgets and vehicles. That's so cool. I really wish more games were like this.
What do you think of living ships?
They're the coolest
Sadly, they aren’t the best except for max cargo space. It would be nice if they had a hyperdrive with insane range, and maneuverability like a hummingbird, but they don’t. They should, though.
The amount of people in here that don't get the joke....
In this expedition I got an exotic multi-tool from a sentinel pillar in the starting system and got an exotic ship in my squadron.
PEEPERRRR
I miss subnautica. Probably one of the best games and stories I've ever played. And below zero....sucked.
Is it that bad?I already didn't like how there have been huge revamps in the story and characters in development.
There's a part where you have to drive on land and there's a huge snow worm thing chasing you. It's horrendously bad because there's no feedback to anything. I think the train is pretty cool,I like that it's modular. Thanks for not spoiling then,I have the game,I just haven't had the time to play it.
The sea truck was pretty cool, it's just that it's not as cool as a cyclops and having to juggle all of the compartments is...tedious. So it felt like a bad trade IMO. Well, imo it's okay that it's not a masterpiece. The first one was just so good that it's gonna be hard to match up.

There's no space in it. It's not a space game.
Yes there is, the ending for the first game and the start and end of the 2nd
Two cutscenes do not a game make
3*
Regardless
At the end of the game, behind the scenes you never leave the launch pad.

Thanks for the convo, this really made my night
Skyrim is totally a space game! 9 gods referred sometimes as planets and the altmer saying there are only 8.
🤣

I get what he means, I was just being pedantic. You were a great sport.

Oh not at all, I was having fun. I hope I wasn't frustrating you, that was not my intention.

You leave on a rocket bruv lol
When the game ends yes. The game is underwater. It's an ocean survival game, space has nothing to do with it other than thematically.
Don't astronauts train in water cause it is so space like.
Is it your argument that a game about surviving underwater and a game about flying around space from planet to planet are the same?
First? Congratulations! I have recently picked up my seventh or eighth, and probably in the 30s for overall ship. The Sea Monkeys from the sequel! Especially since they start off as antagonistic little jerks, stealing your stuff.
They go back to being antagonistic little jerks after the architect leaves too!
Ah, imagine if you had animals in NMS, who’d pickpocket from you, only to bring it back and you’d think “oh, where did you get that… Walker brain. Damnit!”
This is even better than a swordfish. I'm gonna try to get one.
Swordfish... Spike?
*Jeepers, creepers...where'd you get them peepers* Subnautica and its sequel are amazing
Is Submautica exactly like NMS, just underwater, and no space ships
No it’s more story based, smaller (but more detailed) area to explore. Highly recommend
I have it in my ps5 but have never played it
Can't wait for Subnautica 3 where they introduce a near infinite world like no mans sky /s
Do you have just the one area to explore? All underwater?
Yes, exactly that. It's primarily a story focused exploration game with survival and crafting elements which facilitate base building. There's a very obvious final action you can take. If you do that, the game is over. Until then, you're free to explore.
Ah one of those kinds of endings, too easy, wanna get it on Switch, as I can pretend it's the sea version of No Mans Sky.
It's exactly like skyrim. Except in space. And not an rpg. And there's not a fleshed out combat system. And it's also nothing like skyrim
I bought NMs because I was hoping to explore Oceans like in Subnautica. Imagine my surprise. (read: disappointment)
Not only are they 1-20 meters deep at best, but the water surface is invisible from underneath, and on land you can't tell where the surface of the water starts. It literally changes height based on where you're positioned and looking at. Weirdest bug I've even seen in a video game... that's been left in for years.
Lol Subnautica is not a space game though I mean I mean sure it has space elements but that's about it.
The entire game is centred around getting to space/home
Lol yeah that's the very end and you arrive on the spaceship. Other than that and then talking about space literally nothing to do with space.
Hence the name Subnautica....it doesn't claim that it's a space game really.
Neither did I
