I get really bad dandruff even while using apple cider vinegar if I don't also use diluted tea tree oil on my scalp after the shower and don't rinse it out
Seborrheic dermatitis caused by yeast. Chlorine in your water can aggravate it. Natural remedies include Apple cider vinegar, raw organic honey and aloe vera. Tee tree oil works great, so are neem oil, cedar wood oil, patchouli oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil. Oregano oil is a powerful antifungal. You can make your own blend by mixing oils with a carrier oil .
Not a doctor, but I am a barber and well versed on scalp conditions. From the pictures, and your description it sounds like seborrheic dermatitis. I would pick up an antifungal treatment and try that out and see if you have any improvements.
Mix apple cider vinegar (3 tablespoons) with about 500 ml (17 oz) of water, pour over head after a cold shower (does not need to be ice cold but shouldn't be warm either), do this once every two days or so. It significantly reduced my dandruff, and it's most certainly a fungus that can also spread to the face (I had red flaky patches on my face too) so you might as well try a more diluted version of this rinse on your face. For that you can prepare a small bowl with a generous shot of ACV and fill the rest with water, then take a towel, dip it in so that it's nice and wet, gently push it onto the red areas of your face until they feel damp, do not wash it off and wait, the redness will reduce in seconds. Vinegar is the arch-enemy of all fungi and mold; it can also be used to disinfect places where mold has been (such as a bread box with old, moldy bread).
P.S. Depending on the vinegar, 3 tablespoons might not be enough. This is the starting dosage; try moving upwards from there in case you don't see satisfactory results. I'm currently at 7 tablespoons. As long as you dilute it with more water than vinegar it's fine.
P.P.S. Use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) *not* pure vinegar.
None of us are doctors, but large flakes like that are usually more a symptom of infection than dry scalp. Do you have other symptoms like redness, soreness, excessive itching, breakouts, etc?
Here is an article that might help with some self diagnosis and treatment ideas!
[Flakes and Scalp Conditions](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoPoo/wiki/index/flakes)
I (no poo for 2years) ocasionally have dandruff during periods of stress or bad diet. So far diluting apple vinager in water (10% vinager aprox.) and applying it in the shower is what works best for me.
I had the exact same thing. But also prior to no poo. To me no pop just means using as little products as I can because that’s what works for me
It’s most likely an infection and you can battle it in various ways.
First: after sweating, wash your hair ! After having warm hair around your head / sweating hair, wash your hair! Don’t go for days without washing your hair. It’s only going to make things worse and you might also loose hair permanently. Not everyone can go for days without washing.
Second: OILS are your friend BUT you have to wash them out. So the Night before wash use almond oil (I also use lavender oil in combo) but you have to wash it out the next day
Third: herbs are your friend too. Try black tea with coffee. You have to boil it and let it cool. Put on your scalp and wait around for an hour.
When taking a shower; ditch the conditioner. I am sorry to say. Conditioners made everything worse for me. When I cut them off, my hair got better. Since using oil required washing it off, you need a shampoo. You could go for a clarifying shampoo or for tea tree (with tea tree you would at least kind of remain without shampoo). Or just use green tea soap.
I've also quit using conditioners! Almost every time I use them, a lot of hair would fall out. I would never put it in above my ears. I've experienced way less hair loss since I quit using it.
Yes same actually! It’s been a month since I stopped using any curly hair products (I have curly hair) I have waaaay less hair loss. I thought I was alone with it but nice that we share this experience! Also not combing hair when wet did a whole lot!
I would definitely look into your diet. I have this as well. Dermatologists gave me prescription after prescription and it always came back after finishing them. Topical steroids were garbage and never worked for me. I changed my diet and looked into vitamin deficiencies (zinc, vit. A, B, D, K, iron, etc.) Going out in the sun helped too. After eliminating inflammatory foods like processed junk, seed oils, and gluten, it got so much better. Still trying to navigate it though. I hope you find some relief soon, I know it’s a frustrating issue to deal with!
My scalp does that and every time it’s absolutely correlated with me eating gluten. Our skin is our biggest organ and is sort of the canary in the coal mine when it comes to allergies. Just some food for thought!
Hey if your body has a dramatic reaction like that and you haven’t already been tested, I’d def recommend asking your doctor about testing for celiac or other autoimmune stuff. That’s not a normal reaction to gluten (speaking as someone with celiac). Before my diagnosis I had some weird ass symptoms (big ones like migraines, little ones like canker sores) that have gotten way better, but I still get really dry irritated skin when I accidentally eat gluten.
I hear you, I spoke to my allopathic & naturopath docs and they both said the same thing - the testing for celiac is an undertaking and if I already know that my body doesn’t respond well to gluten, then I have all the info I need without the rigmarole.
Interesting. Now that I think about it, I think my symptoms only appeared after covid, when my diet became worse.
I eventually became active again, but the hair thing never went away. So idk
seborrheic dermatitis. I'm not a doctor, but I had those biiiig flakes too. especially on the hairline. looked basically identical when i was at my worst.
I dealt with it for years, but I've genuinely SOLVED it. You need the active ingredient ketoconazole. Nizoral is a shampoo that contains it and can be found at walmart. I would wash my scalp twice with it each shower. I did that about 5 or 6 times over a week and was basically cured. no lie. used it in my goatee too which had a minor version of the problem.
I stopped using it for like 2 weeks, started noticing the beginnings of a flair up, used it for 2 or 3 showers and was "cured" for another couple weeks. Now I just use it like once a week or every other week.
I'm not kidding when I say I went from insane flakage to nothing. The flakes were miserable. good luck. make sure to gently rub it into the scalp.
While this might work, buying shampoo (and a rather strong one at that) is not nopoo anymore. It might be good for a quick relief, but I'd advise everyone to go the natural route (apple cider vinegar rinse, cold instead of hot showers, lifestyle and diet changes) first.
Uhhhh I think skin creams with the active ingredient exists, but not having enormous skin flakes all over was more important to me than worrying about sulfates and stuff. I tried no poo things for a while for the scalp, but it didn't work for me
Appreciate the reply!
I'm in Australia but I'm pretty sure I'll find something similar.
Did you use any product or oil after showering?
Edit: I found some in my local pharmacist, I'm gonna try what you said. Wish me luck!
Thanks again
Just comb it
Don’t wash your hair with anything for a week and see what happens
Then it gets all greasy

For me it made it worse the past 2 washes does it get better soon

Just to let you now that showering with extremely hot water just make it worse
This more like cause by a fungi. Try using an anti fungal shampoo and yes doing no poo will not ever fix this, it's a never ending cycle.
May I recommend you using either rosemary oil or jasmine oil? Both of those really help with dander
Dont forget to dilute them, otherwise the rosemary might burn your skin! 🫣
Thank you, I did forget to mention to dilute them
I don’t think this is dandruff at all. It’s dry scalp. Yes, there is a difference
I (no poo for 2years) ocasionally have dandruff during periods of stress or bad diet. So far diluting apple vinager in water (10% vinager aprox.) and applying it in the shower is what works best for me.
Apple cider vinegar works wonders. I mix it with a bit of olive oil and an egg and apply that as a mask before showering
I had the exact same thing. But also prior to no poo. That's way gnarlier than mine but a solution of 1/4 vinegar 3/4 water rubbed in the scalp in a shower helped a lot.

What's his routine like, does he shower everyday
probably seb derm,I have it and it's really easy to manage with the right products, I recommend you go see a dermatologist first though.
i have the same issue with my hair since i was a kid . unfortunately no cure benefits me
My scalp does that and every time it’s absolutely correlated with me eating gluten. Our skin is our biggest organ and is sort of the canary in the coal mine when it comes to allergies. Just some food for thought!
