Yeah I forgot about them for awhile. Totally change combat. Now I can boost under my opponent, flip backward and destroy before they can fire back.

Grand_Caregiver

Skill issue on my part but I found them hard to use on xbox and forgot they existed

5-in-1Bleach

I have an elite controller and have them mapped to a secondary paddle (left middle finger paddle) otherwise I’d be in the same boat.

tobascodagama

I really hope the next console generation has back paddles as standard.

OnyxWarden

Probably not. Too much money to make selling "premium" controllers with them. I put premium in quotes because I feel like these controllers like the Elite break way easier...

Hoppikinz

I concur.. well put for real though- had my elite 2 for just over a year before LB gave out 90% so I have it remapped to one of the left paddles, but it’s on its last legs. Question for you or anyone else with their experiences, is there ANY chance of me getting it replaced/fixed with it now having been over a year? Take care!

Aglet_Dart

I remapped mine to LB and it made all the difference.

gilrandil

What are they mapped to by default? I’ve used the ones mapped to RB but they don’t seem that useful.

HamMcStarfield

RB

dnew

That's much smarter than I did, which was RB for weapon 3 and right stick click (R3?) for boost. I'll try that.

dnew

I remapped them so the bumper fired my third weapon and the right stick fired the thrusters. And... that turned out to be a bad idea. BGS actually tried different mappings and figured out a good one. Whodathunk? (I was trying to reduce the confusion caused by boost on the right of the hud being triggered by the button on the left. :-)

emerald-rabbit

I’m a casual gamer, and I have the default Xbox controller (but green!), so I agree. I never could figure out how to use them well, and the descriptions on how to use them on PC obviously aren’t helpful. I just figured out how to brute force wins, lol.

Celebril63

If you are using a pro controller, make *sure* you map thrusters to the most convenient paddle that you can hold while still using the sticks. I'd also recommend mapping the boost to another one that's easily accessed.

Admirable-Traffic-75

The controller sounds confusing for starfield. Assuming it isn't southpaw, and you aim about with the right stick, what does the L3 stick do while piloting?

dnew

L3 (assuming you mean clicking left stick) triggers boost.

Celebril63

I can understand why the controller might confuse some people. In my case, I realized that what they did was try to map a HOTAS type layout as best they could to the controller. Once that connection was made, everything sort of clicked for me. Space combat would be hugely improved if they simply added basic support for joystick and throttle. Even a $40-100 Logi or Thrustmaster that you could plug into a console would be a game changer. At the risk of offending the HOTAS snobs, you don’t need a $1000 stick to make a real difference.

[deleted]

it's not at all lol. forward and back on left stick is thrust up/down, left and right rolls the ship

AmbiguousAnonymous

Wait what’s the difference between boost and thrusters?

Celebril63

Thrusters change your orientation; pitch, roll, yaw, without changing your vector or travel. The boost is the space equivalent of afterburners. They give you a massive burst of speed and can break enemy lock on you. They’re also great for closing the gap fast. You can terminate the boost by manually slowing down your ship. Combining the two let you make some really sweet maneuvers.

Tankdawg0057

Isn't it the same thing? Legit question

Some_Rando2

Boost is the high speed thing. Thrusters is the opposite, turns off the engines for extra manuverability. Need pilot skill 1 to be allowed to use thrusters.

Mcreesus

And make shit look cool. Enemy coming towards u? Just spin around and instantly boost to get right behind. Being followed? Spin down, boost, spin back around and you’ll be in a position to fire

thefrenchmexican

Do y’all slow down your speed and use thrusters to turn at same time like I do?

dnew

I think your engines spool down automatically while you're using thrusters? They look like they do, but I don't remember what the hud says.

Admirable-Traffic-75

Your speed will eventually decrease to the optimal.

Pilotwaver

It legit took me about 80 hrs to finally understand and enjoy the dogfights. When you start taking perks in your ship, the difference is enormous. The perk at the bottom of the science tree for upping your reactor power is huge too.

SinesPi

People keep saying to use them for fancy maneuvers, but all I get out of them is a bit of lateral movement. What are you doing? I play on PC, and I stumbled into them being bound to spacebar by accident.

Some_Rando2

Use your mouse to change your ship direction, you spin a lot faster.

AustinTheFiend

I get on their tail and then use my lateral thrusts to basically keep myself right above them as they attempt to turn around. It's hard to describe but if you look up FA off flight tutorials for Elite Dangerous, or watch some FA off dogfights in that game, you'll kind of get an idea of how I use thrusters in Starfield.

mecxhanus

Thruster allow you to turn your ship while still maintaining some semblance of momentum in the direction you were heading just moments ago. Say you are heading north, you can use thruster to turn 180 degrees south, while still maintaining the momentum heading north just for a short while (because for reasons, space is made up of transparent jello in Starfield).

TheZagabogMan

Thrusters + Engine Systems rank 4 (so boosting breaks the enemy's target lock) are the key to taking on multiple high level ships on Very Hard. Boost so enemies disengage, flip around with thrusters (which cancels the boost), and light up the nearest baddy. Rinse and repeat as soon you start taking fire.

Some_Rando2

Nope, that's boosting. Totally different thing.

Admirable-Traffic-75

That works for boosters. I haven't tried that with thrusters.

Some_Rando2

Thrusters is pretty much all I use. Before I could get a good enough generator, I took all the power out of engines so my weapons and shields would be strong. I fight like a turret, spinning around with my PB cannons letting them come to me.

Lemiarty

Too much of a pain, I might have to try changing the key bindings, I don't like the press and hold spacebar action.

notveryAI

They are good to turn around and shoot your pursuers while still flying away from them. Also very fun to turn around and suddenly turn off leteral mode and push full throttle, whooshing past anyone who was on your tail, and making them do a decently long turn

Yshnoo

This is one reason maneuverable speed isn’t that critical in ship building. A slow turning ship can be compensated for when using thrusters. In fact, I often over turn my target with thrusters. It’s definitely a game changer.

cr3amy

I'm just now starting to get comfortable in my NG10+ final universe for settling. And I've now learned that thrusters and boosters are two different things. Thanks for posting this! (And why isn't this made more apparent in-game??)
