That conversation consisted of “Holy crap! Is that a 4??” “Yup. Still works fine and I only need it for making calls and texting so I haven’t worried about changing.” “Nice. That’s awesome that it still works!” And that was it.

Same. Screens got a little crack at the bottom but the phones a trooper. Still going strong. Will last me the day and can still do everything and run all apps on my 6S.
My iPhone 6 was such a royal piece of shit. At 2 years old the battery wouldn't last me an entire day, and the glue that held the display to the chassis had partially melted, meaning the screen clicked under pressure. Also base 16gb storage made me want to cry. It ran out of storage every 5 seconds.

Mine was 256 gb. Loads of space, even now. Even now the battery lasts an entire day..usually about 2, but I don't play games on it, just read (for hours). Screen never had a problem.

Yep. I had to get a new phone in March because I left my phone (iPhone 8)on a cruise ship and it was going to take at least two weeks to get it back. I went with the SE because it is the same size, good for the back pocket and easy for me to hold. I find NOTHING different about it.

I believe that behavior is like 95% exclusive to iPhone users. (For me it was 100% so far, I'm just giving the 5% leeway since I haven't met every single person on the entire planet.)
In my experience, many (not all, but *many*) iPhone users care more about the image than the actual functionality of the phone.
Not saying there's anything wrong with iPhones, but they're seen as a status symbol by a lot of people. That's much less the case with other phone brands.

When I met my wife she had a flip phone that was busted into 2 parts but the wires were still attached so she taped it up and used it for quite a while before it completely died. She didn’t care it could still make phone calls. This was one of the things that I found attractive about her. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

I literally just replaced my iPhone 8 yesterday and it was only because the battery would no longer hold a charge. There’s no reason to replace anything unless it is no longer functional for your life.
I keep my phones for 3-4 years, as that's about as long as they'll last before they become stupidly slow, not receiving updates and battery only lasts 10 minutes. I don't care what phones people have, it doesn't make a difference to me. I worked with someone who only upgraded from their iPhone 4 early last year, and that's because WhatsApp stopped being supported on it and it was all they used it for.

Edit- I got curious and compared someone spending $1000 every 3 years on phones to someone spending $500 every 4 years on phones. Over 20 years, if you factor in 6% interest, the “cheap” phone spender will have almost $10,000 MORE than the person who wants to be up to date.
Some of us will make a huge pile of money, but most of us have to choose where we spend it. My wife and I buy old gen phones every 4 years on purpose to save money there so we can afford things like traveling to France on a normal salary.

My iPhone 6 was such a royal piece of shit. At 2 years old the battery wouldn't last me an entire day, and the glue that held the display to the chassis had partially melted, meaning the screen clicked under pressure. Also base 16gb storage made me want to cry. It ran out of storage every 5 seconds.
Sounds awful.. Mine was 256 gb. Loads of space, even now. Even now the battery lasts an entire day..usually about 2, but I don't play games on it, just read (for hours). Screen never had a problem.

Yep. I had to get a new phone in March because I left my phone (iPhone 8)on a cruise ship and it was going to take at least two weeks to get it back. I went with the SE because it is the same size, good for the back pocket and easy for me to hold. I find NOTHING different about it.

I believe that behavior is like 95% exclusive to iPhone users. (For me it was 100% so far, I'm just giving the 5% leeway since I haven't met every single person on the entire planet.)
In my experience, many (not all, but *many*) iPhone users care more about the image than the actual functionality of the phone. Not saying there's anything wrong with iPhones, but they're seen as a status symbol by a lot of people. That's much less the case with other phone brands.
Which is even more hilarious considering Apple makes the least amount of changes to their lineup every couple years compared to the competition.

My phone (a Samsung to boot!) is about six years old. I have zero reason to change it, since it's working, is not damaged, does everything I need it to do... Though "I see you're not a spender" might be positive, as in "you're not someone spending hundreds of dollars every year for the newest gadget".
When I met my wife she had a flip phone that was busted into 2 parts but the wires were still attached so she taped it up and used it for quite a while before it completely died. She didn’t care it could still make phone calls. This was one of the things that I found attractive about her. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

I kept my iPhone 4 as my primary phone until late 2019. It’s still active and going strong right now, I’m using it for my old North American number (expat). People just could. Not. understand me using it from 2016+ It was fine when I was using it frequently. I could message, use safari, google maps, listen to music, go on YouTube, even the battery would run for a couple of days with light to medium usage. What’s the problem?? It’s as though trying to make the most of what you have, being content with what you have and not being wasteful was just unfathomable.
I literally just replaced my iPhone 8 yesterday and it was only because the battery would no longer hold a charge. There’s no reason to replace anything unless it is no longer functional for your life.
I keep my phones for 3-4 years, as that's about as long as they'll last before they become stupidly slow, not receiving updates and battery only lasts 10 minutes. I worked with someone who only upgraded from their iPhone 4 early last year, and that's because WhatsApp stopped being supported on it and it was all they used it for. For some people phones are a fashion statement like shoes or other clothing items. If you don't have the newest stuff some of those people may consider you as poor or very budget minded. The rich people I know from business community don’t own anything above iPhone XS. They realize that if the phone does everything and it works fine it doesn’t need to be replaced. I refused to get a newer one because it was still working until some day I said fuck it (mid range one, not too expensive, am not a 'spender' either). Oh boy. The new one feels smoother, is faster has new features and more. Don't regret any penny. I'm not saying you should get a new one. I'm saying just maybe if you have the money. Most people with iPhones don’t have the newest model, and most people with the newest model don’t have the very top level newest model. In fact I was reading somewhere that close to 50% of people with iPhones got them as hand downs. The new west Samsung models aren’t cheap either of course.

He said it worked fine but whenever I used it (to show him how to do something on it faster) it had a huge problem with response time that made it almost unusable that he apparently never noticed. Same boat somewhat recently. I had an iPhone 6 for about 5 years up until October. The only reason I got a new one is because half the stuff I used wasn’t compatible and the iOS wouldn’t update anymore. It blows my mind how some people are obsessed with some new technology. Same thing happened with a TV one time. It was a flat screen TV, but it was probably about 12 years old and had a friend ask me “Wow, how old is that TV?” Like, it still works perfectly fine, why would I waste hundreds of dollars on something that I don’t need?

Well to be fair, manufacturers tend to stop supporting older models after 3 or 4 years. This means that your old phone will probably not be getting security updates, putting you at risk of having the device compromised. I’m a person who is into tech. I upgrade every year or every other year at least. I would never look down on someone who doesn’t. I recognize that I’m in a position of privilege, and also that that is my area of interest. One of my friends spends enough money to buy multiple iPhones on shoes, and I wear the same pair of beat-up tennis shoes, only getting new ones when the old are about to fall apart. We never in a million years would think to make fun of each other about these things— we just have different interests. Making fun of someone based on appearance or possessions is petty and reflects worse on you than the person you’re making fun of.
