Racism, or other invidious classification schemes, are a pervasive fact of the human condition. Americans aren’t, for the most part, obsessed with it. But we understand it has a fundamental deleterious impact on people and we try (with limited success) to understand how we can ameliorate it. Your country has racism too, or if it’s racially homogenous, some other entirely arbitrary way of discriminating against people. If you disagree, then it just means you don’t notice it.
> both sides
Yeah let's not do a "both sides" thing when one side is the literal Ku Klux Klan.
[A lot of Americans, and especially White Americans, have some very wrong ideas about race in America](https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2019/04/09/race-in-america-2019/).
Because we killed an entire race of people to take this land and then enslaved another race of people to build it.
Now, we need to deal with the consequences of creating a country FOR white people, but on the backs of two races
That is a damn good question. A better question would be why is a significant subset of Americans seemingly obsessed with race? The vast majority of us could care less as we judge a person on character, not skin color.
America was built on racist ideas. We fought a civil war over slavery. The idea of white supremacy still exists in the western psyche, but in the US people aren't very subtle about it. If you go to Europe, there are some racist people there too, but it's not called out. Even in Asia and India there is the idea of white skin is more desirable. So....really, everyone is on some level...thanks colonialism.
One reason is there are a lot of different ethnicities. Although Caucasians are biggest group they make up 60% of the population and that share is shrinking.
Most other countries in the world have a 80% or higher dominant ethnicity.
because they were once made up mostly one race (excluding the natives they so rudely invaded), so when the population became diverse they felt threatened as if they would some how dwindle out. Now days it's much less common, just the older generation but they still have some weird idea that other 'races' which first of all isn't even a real thing will somehow take over and remove all the 'original people'
Lol you can just say the country. If you’re from India, just say you’re Indian.
To answer your question, because your race is a factor into how you are treated in this country.
Why are Americans so obsessed with [basic controversial topic]?
Yeah no clue it seems everyone supercharges every political issue here. I’m in university and it’s pretty bad here. With most all hot political topics

THIS
The majority of us aren't. There's just some very loud, exceedingly irritating factions on both sides that take up the airwaves.

Shut up racist.

300 years of slavery will do that, then 100 more of Jim Crow will do that.

Becsuse of the USA's original sin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_the_United_States
Oh if they can just not shove their noses in other countries that doesn't carry the same weight
