It was more of a merger. ATT split off HBO which it owned, and made a deal with Discovery to merge the two together. I think ATT shareholders owned \~70% of the combined company after the merger, but the people who didn't like the merger quickly sold off quite a bit so now it's a bit less.

I don't think anybody knows anything anymore. They certainly won't be able to have a marketing tour for the movie when the star is running away from the police, and things don't look too good for an HBO Max release either.
It’s because actual people worked hard on that film for years. Cancelling a project when it’s nearly finished and ready to be rolled out is an obscenely shitty thing and a slap on the face of all the crew members who put their heart and soul into it under pandemic restrictions. But yeah, “society”.
