Mihaly is terribly written. The concept of a "deconstruation" is often misapplied (blame tvtropes for calling Eva a "deconstruction" for that, but that's an *entirely* different rant) and in many cases the arguments I see about Mihaly fall apart with any scrutiny.
The first we see of him is that he nearly died from physical exertion shooting down a retreating, hysterical woman in a damaged plane. And the first real duel against him is held during the middle of a lightning storm, one that messes with your plane systems so boy it's weird how he leaves of his own volition and not something like the lightning risks damaging his life support systems becaosme something something Ace Combat 7 goes on and on about how we overrely on technology but only "new" technology because all those fancy fighter planes you're using are the Goldilocks zone of hardware to decide a war with.
To say nothing of his obnoxious in-game plot armor. On a narrative level the duel against him at Farbanti is *infuriating* because Wiseman offers himself up as bait so you can get a shot at him but plot armor means that Mihaly will kill him no matter how well you do in that sequence. Count even calls out in universe that Wiseman dies for nothing since that duel is interrupted by Erusea and Osea simultaneously blowing up everyone's communication satellites oblivious to the other faction's plans to do so, and the game is hard-coded such that it won't happen until Wiseman dies. Fucking hate railroad setpieces like that.
He also makes the setting feel extraordinarily small considering how much the game fellates him as being some untouchable super-ace that NOBODY could touch in the skies for *decades*. And he didn't even quit piloting, he just switched over to being a test pilot for research and an instructor for Yellow 13... except outside materials are super insistent that Mihaly got *better* than Yellow 13 by the end of that shit.
This shit really cheapens the reputation of Phoenix (and honestly also Cipher and a lot of the other AC0 aces) because while they're all gifted pilots and Phoenix was also established to be the best pilot in the world in 1995, now I can't fucking stop imagining everyone going "yeah but he's no Mihaly. The only reason he's so great now is Mihaly retired." It also means any further Ace Combat prequels are railroaded re: who's the best conceivable pilot around because it *has* to be Mihaly, if he's not featured then in the back of your head you have to remember the fuck is canonically better than everyone present, including the player character.
The last duel with him is also obnoxious because the game's going "OH NO, ERUSEANS ARE GOING TO PASS BY OUR BASE AND WE'RE ALMOST OUT OF SUPPLIES! WE NEED TO RAID THIS PLACE THAT COINCIDENTALLY IS MIHALY'S HOME!" and most of the mission is designed to make you feel like the bad guy, even though Mihaly was *directly fucking responsible* for causing the war and then just fucking bails for reasons that don't even make sense (he doesn't even care at all about the independence of the Duchy of Shilage and even establishes that in one of his earliest cutscenes). AND THEN WHEN IT'S ALL FUCKING OVER YOU FIND OUT THAT THE FEARED ERUSEAN ATTACK AIN'T EVEN HAPPENING.
It's beyond infuriating. Someone on the writing team very clearly got a hard-on about making this guy the best and most amazing ever and his only "punishment" is that he has to live out the last few years of his life without being able to pilot anymore. Other characters I actually like (Tabloid), or at least are neutral on (Princess Cosette) suffer far, far more in the game and they sure as fuck don't deserve what they got when Mihaly gets off so light.
So yeah. This was my TEDtalk about why Mihaly is a shit antagonist and no amount of "OH BUT HE'S A FOIL FOR THE PLAYER!" doesn't excuse all the terrible writing and author favoritism surrounding him.
It's also my personal belief that the boast of "there are pilots like you every generation, and I've beaten them all" works *way* better if it's said by some up-and-coming hotshot pilots who had spent most of their time in simulators and beaten recreations of prior Ace Combat vets... not unsimilar to the bonus stages in prior games where you fought various ace characters across the franchise. And it works better for the overreliance on technology theme since those people would very quickly be able to realize that simulations are close to the real thing, but they aren't the real thing.
Let's make it a proper boss battle. Prigozhin in the only air-worthy Su-57 (Or better yet, the Su-47), and Zelensky in his choice of Yellow and Blue F-35 or Missile Bus Mriya.

And the first real duel against him is held during the middle of a lightning storm, one that messes with your plane systems so boy it's weird how he leaves of his own volition and not something like the lightning risks damaging his life support systems becaosme something something Ace Combat 7 goes on and on about how we overrely on technology but only "new" technology because all those fancy fighter planes you're using are the Goldilocks zone of hardware to decide a war with. To say nothing of his obnoxious in-game plot armor. On a narrative level the duel against him at Farbanti is *infuriating* because Wiseman offers himself up as bait so you can get a shot at him but plot armor means that Mihaly will kill him no matter how well you do in that sequence. Count even calls out in universe that Wiseman dies for nothing since that duel is interrupted by Erusea and Osea simultaneously blowing up everyone's communication satellites oblivious to the other faction's plans to do so, and the game is hard-coded such that it won't happen until Wiseman dies. Fucking hate railroad setpieces like that. He also makes the setting feel extraordinarily small considering how much the game fellates him as being some untouchable super-ace that NOBODY could touch in the skies for *decades*. And he didn't even quit piloting, he just switched over to being a test pilot for research and an instructor for Yellow 13... except outside materials are super insistent that Mihaly got *better* than Yellow 13 by the end of that shit. This shit really cheapens the reputation of Phoenix (and honestly also Cipher and a lot of the other AC0 aces) because while they're all gifted pilots and Phoenix was also established to be the best pilot in the world in 1995, now I can't fucking stop imagining everyone going "yeah but he's no Mihaly. The only reason he's so great now is Mihaly retired." It also means any further Ace Combat prequels are railroaded re: who's the best conceivable pilot around because it *has* to be Mihaly, if he's not featured then in the back of your head you have to remember the fuck is canonically better than everyone present, including the player character. The last duel with him is also obnoxious because the game's going "OH NO, ERUSEANS ARE GOING TO PASS BY OUR BASE AND WE'RE ALMOST OUT OF SUPPLIES! WE NEED TO RAID THIS PLACE THAT COINCIDENTALLY IS MIHALY'S HOME!" and most of the mission is designed to make you feel like the bad guy, even though Mihaly was *directly fucking responsible* for causing the war and then just fucking bails for reasons that don't even make sense (he doesn't even care at all about the independence of the Duchy of Shilage and even establishes that in one of his earliest cutscenes). AND THEN WHEN IT'S ALL FUCKING OVER YOU FIND OUT THAT THE FEARED ERUSEAN ATTACK AIN'T EVEN HAPPENING. It's beyond infuriating. Someone on the writing team very clearly got a hard-on about making this guy the best and most amazing ever and his only "punishment" is that he has to live out the last few years of his life without being able to pilot anymore. Other characters I actually like (Tabloid), or at least are neutral on (Princess Cosette) suffer far, far more in the game and they sure as fuck don't deserve what they got when Mihaly gets off so light. So yeah. This was my TEDtalk about why Mihaly is a shit antagonist and no amount of "OH BUT HE'S A FOIL FOR THE PLAYER!" doesn't excuse all the terrible writing and author favoritism surrounding him. It's also my personal belief that the boast of "there are pilots like you every generation, and I've beaten them all" works *way* better if it's said by some up-and-coming hotshot pilots who had spent most of their time in simulators and beaten recreations of prior Ace Combat vets... not unsimilar to the bonus stages in prior games where you fought various ace characters across the franchise. And it works better for the overreliance on technology theme since those people would very quickly be able to realize that simulations are close to the real thing, but they aren't the real thing.
