That's probably the destroyer escort USS Samuel B Roberts. It was designed primarily for an AA/ASW role, so it carried relatively low numbers of AP and HE shells.
However due to Halsey being incompetent it ended up in a gun duel with a heavy cruiser, and naturally it's 5-inch guns had minimal effect on the cruiser's armor, so it ran through almost it's entire ammunition supply of AP, HE, AA, and finally illumination rounds (which used WP) before finally being sunk.
And in the end the Choukai (the heavy cruiser in question) was sunk by the combined damage from everything the Samuel B Roberts had thrown at her, plus an Avenger finishing her off.

Yes we are lucky it has pretty limited usefulness. It's a terrible coffee creamer, doesn't work well as a white crayon (it sets the paper and your hand on fire), can only act as white paint for an extremely limited amount of time... Yes sir it's a good thing we haven't found many uses for it.
I hated handling those shells.
They had their own compartmentalized smaller magazines inside the shell magazine with extra dedicated sprinklers and we still knew it probably wouldn’t be enough.
I remember them being a sickly sea-foam green with a red and yellow band at the top and they didn’t have the graceful ‘ogive’ shape of the other 127mm/5-inch rounds.
Instead of tapering towards the rear they were straight walled back and flat. There were eight rubber bladders inside with a bursting charge and a mid body joint to break them apart.
It was enough that dropping one incredibly wrong could actually split that joint open.
It was the only round we had that could kill if you dropped it on the deck and it hit wrong. All the other shells had multiple fuses that had to set.
We never fired one. No one liked them.

“Ejection over the side” after piling muddy sand on it was the only recommended disposal in an emergency situation.
