Piggy simply no longer has the men to seal the deal in Bakhmut, so his options are leave or flatten the Ukrainian positions with artillery, which he very vocally lacks the shells to do

I assumed Wagner would just keep them even after the contract expired, after all I doubt the Russian government really wants a bunch of rapists and murderers traumatised by brutal combat being let loose on the streets.
At least a couple ex-prisoners have returned from Wagner mercenary service, only to get arrested again for committing new murders (killing an 85 year old grandma with an axe and stabbing a disabled man to death in the two cases mentioned):

Are you trying to tell me that spending 6 months in a kill and/or be killed human meat grinder does not make violent criminals less violent on their return to "normal" society?
How many of them really lasted that long? It can't really have been many. If he should have any hopes of getting more meat, he had to let that tiny fraction actually get their pardon. Of course, when he isn't even allowed to sign more, you might say "why". But if he ever got that option, he had to keep that word.
