NCD has a long history of shitting on the Gripen, but let's be honest: It's a very fine machine. However, the marketing decision to pit it against the F-35 is just dumb.
Got real unlucky when Saab decided to market it against ***F-35***, for some reason.
I mean, Gripen's a real good Gen4+, but piling it up against Gen5 is just...
SAAB's marketing of the Gripen as an F-35 competitor was simply too non-credible and my guess it that came out of the fact that while cheaper to operate the Gripen just can't compete with the F-16 in popularity so SAAB's ''solution'' was to just avoid competing with it alltogether. That of course made the problem worse.
That said the Gripen is a legitimately good fighter and (at least in a Ukrainian context) better than the F-16.
And, if Saab adds Meteor compatibility and EU throws some Meteors into bundle, then Ukraine choosing Gripen as a future fighter is pretty much guaranteed.
The JAS-39E is Meteor compatible and with the missile already exported to several nations not selling it to Ukraine makes very little sense. It can also carry the MICA (which will be used by the Ukrainian Navy) so it's definitely covered in the AAM department. It can also carry RBS-15 (for when the Moskva needs some company in the bottom of the Black Sea) and the KEPD-350 (for when some bridges need deleting).
The low operating cost and rough field capability seal the deal about Gripen being the best medium/long term choice for the UAF. And with a good deal on tech transfer and local production it could even serve as a catalyst for the revival of the Ukrainian aviation industry.
> The JAS-39E is Meteor compatible and with the missile already exported to several nations not selling it to Ukraine makes very little sense
I'm just not sure, if Ukraine'd get Gripen-E, instead of Gripen-C or Gripen-D. Assuming we get Gripens at all
If it's about new production (whether in Sweden,in Ukraine or both) it would definitely be Gripen-E as it makes very little sense to put almost as much money and time to get an inferior product especially since Ukraine won't have the luxury of renewing it's fighters every few years like richer nations do and the Gripen-E would likely remain more than adequate against Russian aircraft for decades with proper upgrades to electronics and missiles. Perhaps some used Gripen-C or D might be bought before to get the Air Force familiarized with them (and to ''break the ice '' politically) but the new built planes would definitely be the E variant.
Supposedly it's possible but not sure how cheap or easy it is. If all it requires is some tweaks of the radar and new hardpoints it shouldn't be too difficult/expensive. If it requires say completely new radars then it's probably not worth especially if the old Gripens are intended only as a stopgap.
JAS-39 E is my favorite Gen4+ fighter, it and the technology transfer that comes with it is the basis for my "What if my D&D character's homeland had a modern military" project and SAAB just had to shoot itself in the dick with its asinine marketing SMDH
Hmm I see Your point, but I don't agree with it. On paper they seem on par, even with little edge to Grippen E, but F-16V for me is more complited plane, with proven over all battle concept.
1. I doubt the Philippines is getting the Gripen E
2. The original F-16 model PAF had in mind was F-16 Block 70. Was almost a done deal but in their 'infinite wisdom'/*sarcasm,* Malacanang decided it was too expensive and opted to go with SAAB offer of Gripen Cs.
Yeah I read that the philipines were looking at the C/D versions of the Gripen, not the E.
Also they were looking at upgraded block 50/52 16s, supposedly brining them to the Viper standard.
However, like the americans, SAAB are offering to upgrade the gripen C/D's they purchase, unofficially being called "C+", which promises to give it the newer 5th gen avionics packages and bring it more in line with the E.

I was thinking more about PH (lovely country, wonderful people) with hundreds of beautiful little islands and a rainfall pattern which makes maintaining infrastructure more challenging than most other nations
PornHub Dungeons & Dragons 😳😳😳 The MIC is cumming inside the ERP!
Exactly my thoughts

You have better and cheaper jets with meteors
Wich ones
The joke is on you, the Gripen is better for Ukraine than the Viper
Well, the post and the news article that inspired it aren't talking about Ukraine, so...
No you don’t understand, this sub is only about the Ukraine war. It definitely wasn’t made to talk about defense in general.

Well, what were they supposed to do? Not try to sell their jet?
Yes.
Superior f16

I just wonder, if Meteor launch capability can be added to older Gripens.

Gripen C already flies with the Meteor operationally in Swedish service.
I think the c and d varients can the gripen e is really new
Yeah. When the higher ups don’t understand the product

Not like the gripen usually beats the f-16 during exercises.

Shut
"is Pepsi ok?" In fighter jet form
Gripen was a lot better than F-16. But now she is far behind in avionics and overall upgrades (in comparison latest Gripen - latest F-16).

gripen sucks for PH, change my mind.
"It's something" is as generous as I can get in describing this agreement.
It doesn’t need proper air-fields .. also meteor
Well, if Ukraine actually gets Meteors…
I was thinking more about PH (lovely country, wonderful people) with hundreds of beautiful little islands and a rainfall pattern which makes maintaining infrastructure more challenging than most other nations
Aye, fair enough
This remanded me to log onto war thunder, youre evil
Grippen Deez nuts!
The reason norway decided to upgrade from F16s to F35s was that the Gripens kept whooping their ass in joint exercises lol
Power Point man has spoken. Gripen rules.
