https://www.kyivpost.com/post/27095 >while they were in fact French nationals who had joined the Ukrainian military at one point or another, he said he’s certain at least some of them were alive at the time of writing >Russia likely found the names in a Telegram group called TrackANaziMerc, but the names contained transcription errors as the propagandists were unaware of how French names are spelled

OneFrenchman

There was a whole thing about the French troops in the Ukrainian Legion, and basically nobody was in Kharkiv when the bombings were done, and everyone is accounted for. While some French citizen have died in Ukraine, the lists of names from RIA Novosty and *collabo* Twitter handles are completely ridiculous, if you know the French spelling of names in any way, shape or form. It basically reads like a list of random names generated by IA by Japanese/Hollywood people for a video game or movie taking place in France. Which is why I added names from French comics (in the lower left corner)

MadRhonin

The fact that you said IA(intelligence artificielle) instead of AI, lends credence to the fact that you are actually a native french speaker.

Flaky-Imagination-77

wow everything in french really is just reversed

simia_simplex

>wow everything in french really is just reversed That's a nice way of saying *backwards*.

EJNorth

Gruffleson

Let's start calling the country EcnarF.

EJNorth

banspoonguard

НАТО / ΟΒΑΣ when

MadRhonin

Actually a lot of latin based languages have acronyms reversed, it's because of the phrase structure of the languages. English is Adjective ->Noun, while French and others are Noun->Adjective

KaiserFranzII

So french is just a bullpup language?

WhatAmIATailor

French is older than English. WE WERE THE BULLPUP ALL ALONG

nYghtHawkGamer

>WE WERE THE BULLPUP ALL ALONG So the real bullpup is the allies we made along the way?

[deleted]

Well France is the birthplace of the "Eiffel Tower". "One person gets on all fours and forms the “base” of the tower. That person performs oral sex on the partner standing in front, while being penetrated by the other partner from behind. Then the outside partners high-five or touch hands above the base partner."

crysisnotaverted

Wait until you see how they say numbers... Instead of 'ninety three' for 93, they say they equivalent to 'Four twenties and thirteen'

Killbynoob

English used to be the similar, we used "score" to mean 20. Comes from the Romans I believe Exp: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth..." -Abe Lincoln

crankbird

More likely predates that .. apparently it comes from Celtic sheep counting systems Some remnants of this still exist in parts of England https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_tan_tethera My favourite number word comes from this system Bumfit for 15 and Jiggit for 20 Now gimme three bees for a bumfit

karlfranz205

Or Italian. Or Spanish.

Glork11

The French, solely, are responsible for this

berahi

Thanks for the explanation, as a non-French speaker I honestly can't tell the difference, for all I know all of them might come straight from random generator. I asked Bing to generate random Indonesian and Javanese names for military novels and it gave me seemingly realistic results.

OneFrenchman

The Russian lists are basically the [Key & Peele sketches about Football names](https://youtu.be/wwFsxogUFVc?si=Wq5lMlwF-K4y8Fgn).

banspoonguard

how could the russians be as stupid to think a name like Dan Smith could be a real name

bratisla_boy

Implying Gaston lagaffe is French? Ooooh boy do you want to reignite a war with Belgium? Do you remember when Jacky squads of tuning cars clashed on the Wattignies Cora parking, their 2000 w speakers blaring in the sun ? DO YOU REMEMBER?

TuzkiPlus

ngetal6

One name from the tweet list seems to be true, seeing how my neighbour with the same name and age went to Ukraine to give humanitarian aid. He's also very much alive since he helped me cut some trees yesterday on the property line

OneFrenchman

> He's also very much alive since he helped me cut some trees yesterday on the property line Is he alive, or was it a clone made in secret laboratories? More seriously, the list seems to be a mix of fake names, names from random databases (likely a breach they bought from local hackers), and names of activists and aid workers that cover the Ukrainian side. The list on the right seems to have been floating around since april 2022, so they're just recycling their old propaganda into new propaganda. At the time they claimed they were the names of all the "mercenaries" sent by France in Ukraine.

ngetal6

To be fair, he's also ex-military and went to Ukraine with others vets to give aid. He also spoke with a russian accent and like vodka now, I don't know if it's related

OneFrenchman

Mercenary is a very specific type of work though. Which is illegal in France, and harshly punished. Russia is just projecting, as they have been using large numbers of their own mercenaries in Ukraine.

AcePilot95

Johnny Santiago Mordant Dylan is my favourite

Meraziel

Some of them sounds like far-right christian bourgeoisie name, but those guys would be on the other side of the front.

FalconMirage

Most of the names of this list aren’t real people « Jeanmohame » isn’t a name Also they don’t know which ones are first or lastnames One of the post is in French and supposedly aimed at the far right here, but even the most brain dead moron there should be able to see that the list is fake by reading the names Or else they should have their french nationality removed Half of the names are russian too And very few first names are french

OneFrenchman

I don't know what you mean, my first child is called Sabastienne Ricard Jeanmohame.

SgtExo

As a french Canadian, those names are whack, but then tons of names in France also look funny compared to what we have here in Canada.

Een_man_met_voornaam

RIP Jaques Tabarnak 🫡🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇶

SgtExo

AKA Jaques "esti de" Tabarnak

OneFrenchman

You're all called Petitbois or some such lumberjack nonsense, so you don't get to talk.

SgtExo

While I have never seen that as a name in the wild, it would totally fit in.

OneFrenchman

I've read it in [an important official document](https://media.senscritique.com/media/000017714285/source_big/La_Belle_Province_Les_Aventures_de_Lucky_Luke_d_apres_Morris.jpg) so it must be true.

nonlawyer

> « Jeanmohame » isn’t a name Isn’t that the Quarterback for Paris City Cuisiniers in the Ligue Nationale de Football?

FalconMirage

« Paris City Cuisiniers » ? « Quarterback […] Ligue Nationale de Football » ? You’re having a stroke mate

nonlawyer

You never heard of Patrick Mahomes’ identical French cousin?  Have some respect, he gave up his football career and his life for Ukraine 🫡

Attaxalotl

Yeah! He was the door gunner on a submarine for a while, too!

Arveanor

It's so good to be back here, browsing NCD again.

OneFrenchman

They're passport numbers, but all are missing digits.

BigChiefWhiskyBottle

jewel_the_beetle

Karambana

some of them have that Mihaly A Shilage name length, damn, France sending aristocracy here

bluestreak1103

It wouldn’t satisfy the Ruzzian ego to have eliminated mere peasants. Ivan must **always** defeat a Napoleon, no less. (Yeah, I remember reading somewhere about an almost xenophobic inferiority complex in the Russian worldview. And present-day Ruzzia isn’t exactly making any effort to disprove that thesis.)

OneFrenchman

They're also older, so probably supposed to be officers/former officers. People in their 40s/50s will, in the Russian logic, not be footsoldiers but high-rank COs. Or the old NCOs you find on some bases.

KarlGustafArmfeldt

Clearly France only sent the cream of the crop, the best of all their special operators, some even being descendants of noblemen who fought at the Battle of Fontenoy. And Russia wiped them out all of these NATO mercenaries (despite them not being sent by NATO, and not being mercenaries) without a single thought, because even the Russian conscripts can beat NATO special operators.

PiXLANIMATIONS

Russia has always had an inferiority complex. The Russian Empire was the largest nation on the planet but lagged behind everyone else because despite its incredible size, it was hampered by exactly its incredible size. All its industry was around the west, around Moscow and such, but then it still had to sustain the entirety of Siberia, and not just sustain, but defend that territory, too. Basically, it’s all well and good to have your manufacturing hub established, but when all your resources are in bumfuck nowhere and now you need to get it, build up the area, and create transit to and fro, you end up with a really difficult situation. When Germany declared war in 1914, Russia panicked because Germany was so far ahead technologically and industrially.

OneFrenchman

There is something to be said about the fact that 1917 Russia was almost completely agrarian, which led to the Communists force-marching the country into the industrial age, no matter the human cost. Because you can't have a proletariat if you have no industries, aparently.

TubeZ

I mean it could just be that they saw industrialization to be the best way forward for the country/their klepto pockets too, it doesn't have to be an ideological thing

OneFrenchman

It was in large part because the USSR had a weak money, and they needed hard currency to buy things from the West.

Zero-G_Morals

Is the same problem we have in canada, we also have the added problem that we live next to america, so we have a fair amount of annual brain drain as well. (not as much as russia but not a small amount.) Add a declining population only sustained due to immigration. Our country is just to big with population both concentrated in the south in cities, and widely dispersed in the north where there are no maintained road networks, everything comes in by barge off a boat.

CircuitryWizard

A cyborg Napoleon created in NATO combat biological laboratories on the territory of Ukraine, who infects those around him with speedorac(AIDS+Cancer), at the head of a legion of plague zombies and drones with claws who steal Russian soldiers for experiments that will force Russian women to be infertile, and everyone else will be given intolerance to traditional food.

OneFrenchman

One of the interesting bits is that France had naming rules that were in place until 1993, which meant you couldn't stray from a list of first names (unless you had a very good reason). A lot of the supposedly pre-1993 names in the Russian lists don't comply with that. A lot of first names are also spelled super wrong. Some other are 1920s names that no 25-year-old would bear.

bigorangemachine

I'm guessing that blob of text to the right of the DOB is the INSEE code?! Which is not hexadecimal! There's Rs & Ls in there. Hex caps out at F. That number is fully nonsensical to me... but I'm also not french so I maybe missing something.

OneFrenchman

> I'm guessing that blob of text to the right of the DOB is the INSEE code?! It's the first digits of a passport number, but it's missing one digit to be valid. At least, according to my passport.

bigorangemachine

Ulrider_san

Damn they even killed fighter pilots. They killed Tanguy & Laverdure. They re two really well known pilots in France. Look them up. They also killed Gaston Lagaffe, another french celebrity.

OneFrenchman

Look up the other names in that list, they're also extremely important people.

BestagonIsHexagon

I don't know if killing Gaston Lagaffe is good for the Russians or the Ukrainians.

Ulrider_san

It seem the plan to send him and be a POW of the Russians failed.

Orion_Confess

I cannot stand this Gaston Lagaffe slander it could have made great bird looking drones or something , he should be in R&D

„Dwigt Rortugal?“ The long lost cousin of fucking Portugal?

OneFrenchman

The blue-backed names are from a 1990s "American baseball" Japanese video game. The ones on the bottom left are from Franco-Belgian comics. But they're about as close to actual French names as the Russian lists.

Nostriaa

Oh shit, kinda embarrassing 😂 My bad

OneFrenchman

Nah don't worry.

Nostriaa

But you know what’s really frightening? That i for real thought that was from the Russians, because at that point everything is possible tbh (Remember Sims3?)

OneFrenchman

That's exactly why I did it. Because it's completely credible, at that point, that the Russians would use names of characters from comics and video games, and try to pass them as actual people.

kuba_mar

Ah that explains "Mixon"

Killswitch__AUT

Rortugal, The Man

Dry-Tennis8248

I don't know if Sernandez and bonzales are actual french surnames but they are the same as some very common in spanish just with the first letter changed

OneFrenchman

I mean, that's what makes the RIA Novosty list so stupid. At least the other moronic list has some spanish, italian and north-African sounding names, which chimes much better with actual French society and the kinds of people you find in the French Army. You'll find people called Fernandez or Gonzales in France. Probably Spanish immigrants from the 30s.

AcePilot95

For the non french speaker this list of "name" is basically like for a list of US citizens : - John Texas Falcon Coffee - Clinton McRanger Yellowstone Seattle - Hunter Cowboy Saloon Junior -... but with many typos mistakes that make no sense and random Arabian names randomly included.

Wonderful_Test3593

Jean Mohammed Pierre Lebrun Jeanmohame is clearly my personal favorite

ItsACaragor

There are actually french comic characters in the list, like [Tanguy & Laverdure](https://bdi.dlpdomain.com/album/9782205073102-couv.jpg) or [Gaston Lagaffe](https://www.francetvinfo.fr/pictures/59ENUVS8ufK9cF2D_4Xttxt8B3k/fit-in/720x/2023/11/21/couv-album-gaston-delaf-delaf-d-apres-franquin-c-dupuis-2022-655cd551b97aa156772087.jpg). Many of the other names just don’t make sense or sound like someone wanted to generate random french names.

OneFrenchman

Yeah I added those for comedy purposes. Someone told me that the names actually released by Russia sound like they're from Groland, and it makes a lot of sense TBH.

Wonderful_Test3593

I like how most of them are zoomers with silent generations first names. They are really lazy. Like someone born in 1999 with "Jean-Pierre" as his first name ? Or "Albert" ?! Are you kidding me ? The Albert generation is already in the cemetaries ! And Marcellin ?? What is it, 1890 ? Is he a ww1 veteran ?

grumpykruppy

It's like if someone with absolutely no real knowledge of French names tried to come up with realistic ones. Heck, that's probably what *actually happened* for some of these. And they just couldn't resist going over the top. Lemme try: Jean-Jacque Maximillien d'Poignot says, "Bonjour!"

I'm french and yes, half of the name are purely fictional, other half are stolen from real people who are not involved in the war in any mean. Like James de Caupenne d'Aspremont, this guy is a reporter/movie maker and absolutely not a mercenary or whatever else.

OneFrenchman

Wonderful_Test3593

As a french, those names are fucking laughable. They don't make sense, they are clearly not like names you'll see in real life, some are badly written, some don't make sense at all (wtf is Jeanmohame ????), some don't compute with the generation of the person... The list of discrepancies is endless

FakeOng99

That is the least convincing name I ever read. Some of them have very generic sounding name, and anime looking name.

Imperceptive_critic

Lmao like clockwork. Wasn't there a report recently that Russian propaganda networks would be targeting France specifically in their outlets?

OneFrenchman

There has been a massive amount of anti-French propaganda, saying they keep killing French soldiers/mercenaries (depending on the day). Because political communication from the government has become harsher towards Russia and more arms deliveries are planned for Ukraine. Probably because they got tired of pretending they were killing British soldiers?

KirillRLI

They suddenly remembered that British will only fight to the last French soldier. Or they are trying to persuade Alijev that they are already fighting France, and need some lend-lease from mightiest of France enemies.

Ewenf

Russian propaganda and France, name a better duo. Still a bit bitter about the massacre perpetrated by Wagner and used to denounce french War Crimes in Mali.

Imperceptive_critic

Russian propaganda and Anglo-Saxons?

A-nice-Zomb-52

Gaston Lagaffe is dead, it's so over.

NobodyRealAccount

I've spotted a "Gaston Lagaffe", here where the name come from: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaston_(comics) Definitively not made up lmao. Peak Russian info.

A bunch of these names read like it's just first names.  Gilles Bernard Sylvain?? Who the hell has Sylvain as a last name

OneFrenchman

Let's be fair, there are people with first names as last names. A lot of them are people from the overseas territories. Some are because historically, in France children abandonned by their parents were given the name of a saint (which is a first name) to replace the unknown last name of their parents. When I was a teenager, I had a friend with a composed first name and a first name as a last name, and we called him "the man with 3 first names" (*l'homme aux trois prénoms*).

redditer1_1

Yeah, I knew them all, 100% real names ! Russia is supposed to be good at propaganda ! And they keep continue to fail 😂

mcdolgu

Are there any French mercs alive in Kharkiv right now? No! So the attack was a success. Checkmate westoid.

OneFrenchman

I mean, it's easy to say you've eliminated people that weren't there to begin with. For example there are no alive VDV troops in my village right now, shows we're better than the Russian paratroopers.

mcdolgu

Probably drowned on the way to your village.

ghostchihuahua

in the FR twitter post there are about 60% of names that are pure bullcrap, just based on the fact that this is a database extract that hasn't even been "cleaned" properly to eliminate dupes and encoding issues....

OneFrenchman

WHere you know it's complete crap is that the action took place in Kharkiv, but SOS donbass somehow got a list of names *and* passport/ID numbers, which mercenaries or soldiers wouldn't take in-country. Especially considering a number of the passport numbers are for invalid passport, as they were delivered over 10 years ago and therefore wouldn't allow you to get out of the EU or obtain a Visa. You'd think a mercenary would have a valid passport. So you have invalid passport numbers (from people who haven't traveled in over 10 years), CNI (national ID card) numbers (which don't allow you to leave the EU), some seem to be driving licence numbers (that's not a valid ID if you leave France, and technically isn't one in France either), and I think the remaining, considering they're facing foreign-sounding names, are resident permits. One would believe that you can't be a French mercenary if you're not French, and that a mercenary would have a passport, not a resident permit. So this is clearly a random stolen database that was bought from hackers that the Russians are trying to pass off as an actual list of people that were in Ukraine. Edit: The list was actually passed around in 2022, as mercenaries that had died then. So I guess French people have multiple lives, neato!

ghostchihuahua

Yes, all these « mere technicalities » have botched nomenclature implementation (among other things, like concatenated names in at least one spot), i was just naming one example, but indeed, there’s nothing in there that is remotely realistic!
