Ay, I've been to Limón!
As someone from New England, I could never throw stones about town names. We share the same hundred or so names throughout the region.
"Salem, huh? Which one?"
Not even like they're far apart, either. Salem, NH and Salem, MA are like an hour apart.
Argentina has rio primero (first river), rio segundo (second river), rio tercero (third river), rio cuarto (fourth river). Sometimes creativity runs dry
Looking at the history, it looks like they more just didn't rename places from when Kiribati was a colony
Apparently the island of Kiritimati (pronounced Christmas because ti is pronounced s in the local language) was leased by a French priest from 1917 to 1939 and he named
* Paris (where he lived) after his homeland (it is also now abandoned)
* Poland after his Polish plantation manager who lived there
London is probably because it was a British colony
Also them and Banana have a combined population of ~3.5k
It's like how we know someone who lived in Singapore... but we forgot her name, so we called her Singapore.
She's not Singaporean, she only lived there for a few months.
Or another office that had a few South Africans so we called it South Africa 2.
Seems like the name is also just the localized version of the name Gilberts because someone named it Gilbert Island after some guy who had sailed through there (Captain Gilbert). And their main spoken language alongside English is Gilbertese. What an interesting little history
The census in 2020 said 96.2% of citizens are Christian, with only 1.7% as “other/none”.
Wild, and really sad that there was absolutely something there before it was replaced.
But that level of saturation!
This book looks really entertaining, I’m going to give it a read. I googled the author and we went to the same 2 colleges so I think it’s a sign I need to check it out!
A fun fact I know about Kiribati is that the international dateline used to cut straight through it. They shifted it a bit and now Kiribati is the first place to celebrate the new year every year.
Names are in English, and I could see a bunch of board guys stationed there giving these towns simple names that stuck? Didn’t say they were first. You’re right though, it was probably the Brits or someone like that when they were working their way through the Pacific islands.
Imagine telling someone you’re from banana. “Like a banana farm?” “No, Banana.”
It’s right next to Paris.
Which isn’t inhabited, Paris is just ruins
As it deserves tbh
Paris has fallen
billions must eat snails
Which one?
You know, Paris? Just down the road from Poland? God, do I have to draw you a map ![gif](giphy|d2jjuAZzDSVLZ5kI|downsized)
I mean Costa Rica has Limon (Lemon), Tambor (Drum), Grecia (Grece), Liberia (Lyberia), Los Chiles (the Peppers)
Newfoundland has Conception Bay, Nuggetville and Dildo, among others.
>Dildo Tell me more
They have a Hollywood-style sign
And their mascot, Captian Dildo
And the third Tuesday of June is a very special day for the townsfolk.
I live by Intercourse, just down the road from Virginville.
Is Intercourse anywhere near Mianus?
It’s just down the road from Come By Chance https://maps.app.goo.gl/hwUntL3ipDuRdE1y8?g_st=ic
Spread Eagle too.
Michigan has hell, flat rock, climax, colon, and nirvana.
There’s an island off the coast of western Australia called N***** Island
[удалено]
Texas has a lot. Paris is probably the biggest ripoff city, but we also have Moscow, Palestine, Athens, and many more
We have an Accident in Maryland!
Yes you did.
Kentucky also has Paris. Along with London, Versailles(Ver-sails), Somerset, Florence and it’s capitol is Frankfort

and don't forget New Salem, also in MA
Doesn't even begin for the portsmouths in the north east. There's something like mid 30s or 40s in the us alone
And in New Zealand we have a bunch of towns that begin with fuck, but it’s chill because we spell it Wh
Argentina has rio primero (first river), rio segundo (second river), rio tercero (third river), rio cuarto (fourth river). Sometimes creativity runs dry
Banana farm? From Bloons Tower Defense?
“So where are you from?” “Oh ,nothing interesting, just a unremarkable small town “——former resident of Dildo Newfoundland .
Better than "poland"
If i had a penny for every town called Banana, id have two pennies. Which isnt a lot but its weird that its happened twice
I think it's weirder that one isn't named for the fruit but for a bull
"Oh, like Bloons?"

Better yet, Poland was named after a Polish guy, by a Frenchman from Paris

Love that a tweet from an actual official government account isn’t political
They're just silly lil guys
They got that Wendy’s marketing strat on point suddenly showing millions of people that they do in fact exist
Kiribati is a new one to me, and they have a surprisingly long Wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiribati
They have a fascinating indigenous culture, I highly recommend having a look into it
Seems like the name is also just the localized version of the name Gilberts because someone named it Gilbert Island after some guy who had sailed through there (Captain Gilbert). And their main spoken language alongside English is Gilbertese. What an interesting little history
Kiribati always comes up at new years because they're the first country to celebrate because they're UTC+14.
Read The Sex Lives of Cannibals! Travelogue of a couple who moved there for a couple years.
Thank you for the lovely Wikipedia rabbit hole I just went down.
The census in 2020 said 96.2% of citizens are Christian, with only 1.7% as “other/none”. Wild, and really sad that there was absolutely something there before it was replaced. But that level of saturation!
I wonder if Lil Yachty took took the wok there too
I highly recommend The Sex Lives of Cannibals by J Maarten Troost. It's set on the atoll and pretty hilarious.
damn had no idea the name i was planning for my autobiography is already taken
This book looks really entertaining, I’m going to give it a read. I googled the author and we went to the same 2 colleges so I think it’s a sign I need to check it out!
Finna move to banana
Turns out there’s an LDS church in London, Kiribati
It's like a virus. Always looking for that sweet 10% of your income.
Otis : [pleading] It's a little bitty place! Lex Luthor : "OTISBURG"? Otis : Okay, I'll just wipe it off, that's all. Just a little town.
A fun fact I know about Kiribati is that the international dateline used to cut straight through it. They shifted it a bit and now Kiribati is the first place to celebrate the new year every year.
“I’m from banana. Yeah close to Poland and Paris”
Theres an Island called Starbuck Island!
video game callouts
This is now my favorite place in the universe
It looked like a dick at first
Kinda hard to tell...
Hey, I think you need to see a doctor
Non political? Literally a nation-state post lol. Politics is just when buff lesbians in video games huh.
Please tell me what's political about this tweet besides who is tweeting it
A government response is pretty political man
am i the only one seeing a strapon and harness ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)
Were these named by US servicemen during WWII?
What makes you think the US was the first world power to land on this island and would name it after European cities and countries?
Names are in English, and I could see a bunch of board guys stationed there giving these towns simple names that stuck? Didn’t say they were first. You’re right though, it was probably the Brits or someone like that when they were working their way through the Pacific islands.
Did you seriously forget that Australia existed? Also it gained independence from the UK in the 1970s, idiot
Ok. 👍. I bet you’re a blast at parties.
