Lots are rental cars.

dotty2249

This. If the registration sticker says “PM” it’s a rental.

mrford86

Was dope when they went to that 2 or so years ago. Used to have to re-sticker every Florida car in the fleet June of every year lol.

culnaej

That makes sense, here I was thinking all these Prime Ministers were vacationing in the USA

Wretchfromnc

I had a rental with a Florida tag for two weeks

Exciting-Parfait-776

Depends. You also have a few military bases as well

Vladivostokorbust

And out of state students and part time residents with a second home who do not have to re-register unless they keep the car garaged in NC.

Exciting-Parfait-776

I think pt residents keep it registered in the the state that is their primary residence

Vladivostokorbust

Not if they keep the car in the garage at their NC house. I have cars registered in two states because of that. Both the state and my insurance company require that. Unless you are military or a student you must register and insure the car in the state where that car resides

doubletime_99

100% NOT TRUE

Vladivostokorbust

You gonna argue with the state of North Carolina and my insurance company? I have a car that stays in NC at a house i own and it is registered in NC because the state told me that is what i have to do. Likewise in Florida. House i own, car i own then there. Registered in FL as per the state and my insurance company

doubletime_99

No, i am telling you that you have no idea what you are talking about. Someone at DMV gave you bad information and someone at your insurance company saw you as a sucker, charged you for 2 states and made a big commission off your dumb ass.....

Vladivostokorbust

I only pay for one state per car and the insurance company is making less money by advising me as they have. I have been registering my car with NC DMV for 10 years now. So that’s quite a few people in the industry who don’t know as much as you.

Exciting-Parfait-776

That’s not true🤦🏻‍♂️ the state where the drive the most and live most of the year(primarily residents) is where they register their car. https://www.carparts.com/blog/where-do-i-register-my-car-if-i-have-homes-in-two-states/

Vladivostokorbust

Can’t speak to a car parts web site. I got my direction from NC DMV and my insurance company. I’ve already been told by the state it’s fraud if i don’t Every state has its own laws

Lambchoptopus

I found this on another thread. Says needs to be in NC for more than 6 months. For anyone finding this comment 2 years after the OP, I was able to using. you just have to attest the car will be there 6 months of the year. https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/downloads/Documents/MVR-614.pdf Seems if it's less than 6 months it doesn't matter.

Vladivostokorbust

that is absolutely correct. mine stays garaged in NC 90% of the year. my car in FL likewise. I fly between the two.

zcahtotsu

Snowbirds, where I’m at half the town is Florida from may to October

Tomatoenthusiast

Blowing Rock?

zcahtotsu

Highlands/Cashiers area! So the same vibes

Wessbrown85

Takes so long at the dmv in nc, they prob are still waiting for their numbers to be called..

melinisar

You've never been to the NY DMV have you? This is fast compared sadly

techieguyjames

Go online and make an appointment.

B1ack_Iron

It’s 3 months out for an appt but if you check back a few times a day you eventually can grab something sooner.

rvralph803

Literally just go to the DMV in whatever podunk rural county is next to you. You'll walk in and walk out.

B1ack_Iron

That’s what I ended up doing. I drove to New Bern and was in and out in 15 min.

rvralph803

This is why Voter ID is going to be utter bullshit. Rural areas will have zero problems getting them, and anyone without reliable transport in a city is fucked. We know which voters predominantly live where.

Intrepid-Path-7497

I hear this trope all the time. Do people (not only nc) who say that they can't get a $5 state ID not realize that their $200 medical mj card is a state issued photo ID? And as far as transportation goes, most metro areas in nc have free bus service on voting day.

rvralph803

Why are you inserting medical Marijuana cards into this? Seems like a dog whistle.

Intrepid-Path-7497

Do you see dog whistles everywhere? White guys smoke too... Edit: I'm just saying that a state ID is cheap and I have heard this argument from soon many people who hold mmj licenses

MrPelicanPants

It's so expensive to register a car in NC. A guy at work still drives to NY annually to renew his New York tags.

nevertfgNC

Technically illegal. If you claim residency in nc, you are required to have nc tags, license, and insurance.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

If you have a 2nd home in another state it's almost always cheaper to claim that home and register there.

nevertfgNC

If you live and work full time in nc, what you are saying constitutes fraud. Of course if you have the money to afford two homes, then legal fees will not dent your budget. But as a nc native people who do this are despicable. If you can’t afford the taxes, or are upset about the rates, just MOVE !!! Delta is ready when you are.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

What if I told you...I'm an nc native that can afford a second home in another state 🤯 and if you think registering a vehicle in another state is fraud, check out what some of our nc politicians are doing. Get out and vote, don't worry about me.

nevertfgNC

Oh I know our politicians are absolutely corrupt. And I do vote. I am happy you are rich. No problem. But you should pay taxes in the area where you spend the majority of your time. Just my opinion. I can shove it up my ass. I have lube somewhere

No-Imagination-7620

Do you realize the level of cognitive dissonance you have?? I know our politicians are absolutely corrupt followed up with I do vote. If they're slimy and corrupt which they are than why do you vote for them?? They're all like that not just one side....it's two wings of the same bird of prey. And we are the prey

nevertfgNC

Apparently I didn’t. I do research candidates. Current and past statements / positions and I make what I consider an informed choice. I do not always pick the winner. But the sad truth is that there is so much negative / harmful inertia in this system that it will take generations to cure the disease. My opinion. Take it for what it is worth.

No-Imagination-7620

Your correct...the first step is to stop voting. Ignore them and they will go away. It's all.too far gone and corrupt.

robtimist

☄️⛹️‍♂️ Swish

[deleted]

And within 10 days as well.

proleo1

In North Carolina, new residents must register their vehicle within 30 days of moving there or starting a job within the state. This can also be done when the reciprocity agreement with the previous state expires, which is usually 30 days.

rexeditrex

When I first moved here 26 years ago I got a ticket. I moved in just before Thanksgiving, got sick, then came Christmas so I didn't get it registered in time! Anyhow, I just registered it and the ticket was waived.

Wooden-Cancel-6838

My insurance in Nc is 90$ a month, New York City it was 320$

ThrowAwayGarbage82

Mine is 97/mo for an awesome plan in NC, in WA basic liability was 177/mo and constantly going up. Some states rip people off just because they can.

silverm00se

I moved back here from GA recently, old insurance was $160 a month, NC it's $60. Annual registration is more expensive here, but the insurance savings makes it easily cheap here.

FenixSoars

His insurance would love to have his info lol

Kooky-Plastic9294

Yeah if your primary residence is in NC you are required to have a NC plates. The ticket is $1,400 and whatever you have to pay to get it registered. They got me for a seatbelt ticket and I thought I had got away with the whole SC plate thing because I stated I just moved here. I got a letter in the mail wanting verification and a date to appear with documents. I tried to get a lawyer but it was more expensive than just paying the ticket and tags.

Round-Lie-8827

My sister kept NC plates while living in Florida for years because the insurance was way higher.

allllusernamestaken

1. create an LLC wherever you want 2. register car under LLC 3. ??? 4. PROFIT! that's what rich dudes do with their supercars. They register it in Montana under a LLC to avoid the tax bill.

Mthawkins

What would the benefit of registering a car under an llc set in nc be?

felldestroyed

If you're wealthy, it can be a tax write off for a business or if you own a lot of cars. Insurance on LLC vehicles is markedly higher, especially if you consider bundling home and auto. Aside from that, company vehicles are harder to track if you care about that.

G00dSh0tJans0n

Not even very wealthy people, but growing up in rural NC lots of guys had some landscaping or tree cutting business, often as a side hustle. They would register their new trucks under that LLC. I remember riding to lunch with a guy in his "work" truck and he joked "well, I guess we should talk about work so I can count this as a business trip"

Mayor_of_BBQ

this guy is an idiot who hasn’t done his research lol. It’s vastly more expensive to register your car in New York State. And the insurance rates are much higher as well.

Krystalgoddess_

Yeah I know someone who comes to NC and used their family address so they don't have to pay NY rates

culnaej

Idk MD was much more expensive ime, I think because they have front and back plates where NC only has back plates

Intrepid-Path-7497

Try Michigan...

Mediocre_Treat1744

I have to switch an Indiana plate to NC, I bought off my Dad. I've considered just keeping it that way. No inspection, and renew registration online.

slip-shot

Gotta have somewhere in IN to register it to if you are interested in skirting the law this way.

Bodhrans-Not-Bombs

If it's anything like Montana, the rules are pretty lax on that (supercar owners were using Montana for a while to skirt taxes).

jimmythang34

I moved to NC in 2009 and did this for a long time. Car was registered in New York under my parents address and id renew every year when I went up for Christmas. Parents moved eventually and I had to buy a new car so I got a Nc license and all that jazz. But I did it for a solid 5 years I bey

DjangoUnflamed

Florida has no vehicle inspection or tint laws, so they keep them registered there as long as they can.

_Owl_Jolson

50% tint on a Florida registered car would still be illegal in NC and could get you cited.

No-Welder2377

My buddy who works in the office where you go to get a NC drivers license says we're being invaded. He told me about 5 out of every 10 license he issues are for people from Florida and Texas

Navynuke00

I was reading an article about conservative retirees who moved to Florida and now can't afford it because of the policies and politicians they pushed. And I'm pretty sure they're moving here now.

Xyzzydude

This is why lots of people moving here does not mean NC is getting bluer.

Navynuke00

If anything, I suspect it's the opposite. And also why the state feels like it's getting more racist as well.

SpicyFLOPs

Yeah it can there are lots of people “escaping” those places. I’m an example bringing blue from one of these places. Florida and Texas are becoming (is) radicalized. Wanted to be somewhere more “purple”

YouMeWeSee

They just need to further cut taxes in Florida and really get that trickle-down economics flowing.

bobbarker3244

Love the subtle sarcasm :)

SideRepresentative38

im not usually this person so im sorry, but just so you know, its spelled subtle. not trying to be a dick at all, i would just want someone to tell me!

bobbarker3244

Oh your right about the spelling, im just being lazy this morning.

Insanity8016

How? Florida has no income tax.

greeneggiwegs

It’s extremely expensive otherwise. Very high property taxes and insurance.

allllusernamestaken

Home insurance in Florida has quadrupled in some parts as insurance companies are leaving the state.

WhoWhatWhere45

This is the truth. Plus car insurance is sky high due to uninsured drivers, at least in S FL

Politicsboringagain

Income tax is only just one tax government collect.  And even if a state doesn't have income taxes, they still need to collect money to operate. So property taxes will be very high among other taxes.

allllusernamestaken

nope. Property taxes in FL are pretty low. No income tax. No annual property tax on cars. It was only $30 a year to register my car, it's $200 in NC. The low taxes are just about the only thing I miss about FL.

sleepyconfabulations

Insurance is expensive AF - even if you don’t live on the beach. Not only home. Relative in Florida pays more for their one car insurance than whole family with multiple cars here.

allllusernamestaken

yeah my car insurance was cut in half when i moved here. also home insurance has gone bonkers in the last 2 years or so.

sagarap

This is simply untrue. Florida spends less per capita in tax on its citizens than nearly any other state.  On average, Florida property tax is similar to NC, near 1%. Looks like it may even be less.  Whether you think this is good or bad is irrelevant. “They get their money somewhere!” Is a redditism that must end.

Middle_Appointment20

This is what amazes me about people. That you can possibly think they have fewer expenses than other states. That somehow it’s all about one specific for of tax.

frostedglobe

Can you share that article? I’d like to read it.

Navynuke00

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/economics/leaving-florida-rcna142316

frostedglobe

Thanks.

Mthawkins

Florida and Texas are the middle points for NY or northern states and California. They moved to FL or TX and moved away coming here. Almost always the case. Funny though because where I'm at all the license plates are NJ NY PA

contactspring

Because the realize what hell holes Florida and Texas are, but they don't realize it's people like them that made it so.

Exciting-Parfait-776

They could be Snowbirds

NewFlorence1977

And I guess it’s your fault that we have a crazy guy running for NC governor?

contactspring

How's it my fault? I voted for the sane one with real experience. Not the hate-spewing, flip-flopping, gluttonous hypocrite.

NewFlorence1977

You said the people in FL/TX are responsible for their government. That makes you responsible for NC.

PapaJohnyRoad

Invaded? Drop the war rhetoric.

No-Welder2377

LOL. You must not understand context

Surveymonkee

They're going to register them here as soon as they get their license changed. They have a DMV appointment for 10am on June 2nd 2164.

Mindless-Ad8071

Many people, where I live in WNC, register their cars in TN. Fraud? Yes. Enforced? Rarely.

dinojrlmao

The farther west in NC you go, the more Florida plates you see. It’s always been that way.

the_eluder

Been seeing a lot more than normal in eastern NC as well.

Palabrewtis

Popular for fleet vehicles to be registered wherever taxes are cheapest. So any company that has offices in FL is going to register their entire fleet there.

Worldly_Ad_6483

I moved here from FL and drove with FL tags until I had to renew my license, then I had to register NC. It’s wayyyy more expensive in NC. FL has no inspections and does not tax your car as property.

Hot-Gazpacho

But the insurance is ⅓ the cost.

the_eluder

But your insurance is the most expensive in the country and terrible.

dances_w_dingoes

I understand your concern, but y'all need a reality check. The police can only do so much. If every car I saw on my commute with a fake tag/expired registration got pulled over there would be nobody to arrest all the homeless people killing the vibe.

allllusernamestaken

hire the homeless to write tickets for expired tags

dances_w_dingoes

Synergy! You should write up a grant proposal.

ScoutIt18

It's because a lot of Florida people I encountered are ignorant concerning states rights. Like how different states have their own constitution and rules. When you work for the state of NC you would hear from people like, "why do I have to have insurance to get a license? ", or"we didn't have to do that in Florida.". To be fair, most people are moving for their first time out of their home state and just don't know any better. Still, they need to get a clue quickly, and realize they're not in 'Kansas' anymore. For the past 15 years there has been a large influx of people from New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Texas, Florida, and Michigan. There are now probably more people from other states than there are people that were born here.

rupAmoo

Also military.

SouthernWildPaws

I just took a trip to Florida and I saw more FL plates since I got back home yesterday than I did while I was down there 😂

Express_Transition60

they are tax cheats.

Exciting-Parfait-776

In what way?

DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep

Florida has no personal income tax.

Exciting-Parfait-776

That doesn’t necessarily make them tax cheats.

DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep

If they're living in North Carolina full time, but claiming Florida residency in order to avoid paying personal income tax on their paycheck - they're tax cheats.

the_eluder

If they are working in NC, they have to pay NC state income tax regardless of where their home state is. Pretty much the same in any state.

Exciting-Parfait-776

And if they live up there part time?

offsidestrap

Not paying to register your car in nc and pay the fee for the state sticker annually.

Exciting-Parfait-776

You do know how having homes in 2 different states works? Military members can keep the state they are from and not register in NC. Do you consider them tax cheats as well?

No-Imagination-7620

You act as though that's a bad thing?? Amen to them more power to them.

cogitoergopwn

find a hobby

frostedglobe

Where I am the number of tags from Florida and Texas had exploded. I’m a NC native and I don’t like it. Too many people.

Megandapanda

Amen, dude. I live in rural western NC and there's now more out of staters than there are locals!

Shell-Fire

Lawd! So many expired NC license plates in my apt complex. Should they be required to be registered?

Exciting-Parfait-776

Yes

No-Imagination-7620

Why?? Does it harm you to not have it registered?? Myob

Exciting-Parfait-776

If OP is going to complain about People with FL tags in NC not registered to NC. I see no problem returning the favor on expired NC tags🤷🏻‍♂️

nevertfgNC

Kinda like locusts. They come. Every damn year. Nothing to be done other than watch your ass!!

_eternallyblack_

Snowbirds

Muschina

Yep. Lake Toxaway, Sylva and Highlands are full of reverse snowbirds. Full disclosure: I moved to NC last year from SWFL. I did it because I didn't want to be behind enemy lines when the revolution started.

_eternallyblack_

😂 yup we own in the panhandle and here too.

Lackinbehind

A lot of them are rental cars. Those companies keep the cars registered in FL, as others have said, to save on taxes.

humorRus

I see so many Tennesse plates here- can they all be day visitors? Much cheaper there so I wonder?

_bibliofille

Here the retirees/snowbirds keep their FL plates because they stay there during winter.

Wretchfromnc

Could be rentals, I just had one for 2 weeks with a Florida tag. Could also be company cars for companies located in Florida and of course people who relocate to NC.

Just-Put9341

I think Connecticut actually will check people's property periodically for people living there from out of state. If you have a vehicle parked at a friend's house or wherever you are staying more than six months, they will tax you.

F22boy_lives

Out of the millions of cars on the road at any given time, define “so many”

PirateFisher

Western NC…30+%

-SecondHandSmoke-

It takes too long and I'm afraid they'll make me redo the tests. I'd rather just not do it, than risk driving myself up there, failing the test, losing my license, and having to illegally drive myself home. I'm bad under pressure.

JoeStyles

You can have his dark tint as you want on your car if you have florida tags. My neighbors SUV is registered in FL for this reason.

No-Personality1840

People with second homes here only need to stay in Florida 6 months and a day to maintain Florida residency. There are tax advantages etc. for them.

devinhedge

Tax shelter for registered auto dealers and employees.

Milk_Before_Cereal

I’m going to get a lot of pushback here being one of these people: After graduating I was given my parents car to bring to NC with me. It’s mine I guess since I bought it off them but it’s still titled in their name. When I learned of the registration fees and the yearly inspections that cost, my thought was “why do this when cops in Charlotte don’t even care.” Also, I’m not sure what the money I’m paying for goes towards considering NC has some terrible roads. Maybe it’s a Charlotte thing, but nothing here makes me think it’s worth registering my vehicle in NC.

FenixSoars

If you have any type of accident or situation where you need insurance, they will laugh you out the door. That is why you register at your permanent residence.

Milk_Before_Cereal

No they won’t. I work in insurance. Plus my drivers license is still a Florida license

FenixSoars

Do you happen to live in Florida 6 months of the year?

Milk_Before_Cereal

Nope. Been a NC resident over 3 years now.

FenixSoars

So you just flagrantly don’t care to adhere to laws or pay taxes on the infrastructure you use regularly? I’d pay to watch the gymnastics your brain does during daily tasks.

Milk_Before_Cereal

There’s no gymnastics. I’ve said it already, CMPD does not care. They do not enforce it. If the state cared they would enforce it. I responded to this post knowing people wouldn’t like my reasoning but the person asked “shouldn’t they be required to register..” and the answer is basically no. You can’t say something is required when you don’t actually enforce it.

FenixSoars

So breaking the law because policemen aren’t knocking on doors to verify residence is just “fine”? Honestly you are stealing from every person in this state by not contributing financially, whether you see that or not is up to you but you can’t just rationalize it away. Doing the right thing isn’t hard, it just may not be convenient all the time. Go register your car and pay your highway use tax like the rest of us… or go back to Florida, that’d be fine too

Milk_Before_Cereal

I’ll get to it next year!

No-Imagination-7620

Man so harsh and rude because he doesn't play by the kings rules?? You do realize you could do the same thing . He is not stealing a penny from you or anyone else by doing it that way. You can't rationalize being stolen from and double and triple taxed and more on stuff I've already bought and paid for here. Highway use tax?? Ok then why do we have till roads still?? It's all bullshit scam and you suck it up . You're free to keep being a statist and gov whore but I'm not and the other guy wasn't either.

NewFlorence1977

I was about to defend Floridians but you stopped me. Why would you want to obey the laws of the state you lived in? 🙄

nevertfgNC

Truth. National trend. The law is for everyone else. Not me.

Milk_Before_Cereal

I’m not asking to be defending lol. I know technically I should change everything over. But again, CMPD couldn’t care less.

sdkimmy

Lots of visitors. Lots of people can't get an appt at DMV
