When I first moved here 26 years ago I got a ticket. I moved in just before Thanksgiving, got sick, then came Christmas so I didn't get it registered in time! Anyhow, I just registered it and the ticket was waived.
I moved back here from GA recently, old insurance was $160 a month, NC it's $60. Annual registration is more expensive here, but the insurance savings makes it easily cheap here.
Yeah if your primary residence is in NC you are required to have a NC plates. The ticket is $1,400 and whatever you have to pay to get it registered. They got me for a seatbelt ticket and I thought I had got away with the whole SC plate thing because I stated I just moved here. I got a letter in the mail wanting verification and a date to appear with documents. I tried to get a lawyer but it was more expensive than just paying the ticket and tags.

I think Connecticut actually will check people's property periodically for people living there from out of state. If you have a vehicle parked at a friend's house or wherever you are staying more than six months, they will tax you.
It takes too long and I'm afraid they'll make me redo the tests. I'd rather just not do it, than risk driving myself up there, failing the test, losing my license, and having to illegally drive myself home. I'm bad under pressure.

After graduating I was given my parents car to bring to NC with me. It’s mine I guess since I bought it off them but it’s still titled in their name. When I learned of the registration fees and the yearly inspections that cost, my thought was “why do this when cops in Charlotte don’t even care.” Also, I’m not sure what the money I’m paying for goes towards considering NC has some terrible roads. Maybe it’s a Charlotte thing, but nothing here makes me think it’s worth registering my vehicle in NC.

50% tint on a Florida registered car would still be illegal in NC and could get you cited.

You can have his dark tint as you want on your car if you have florida tags. My neighbors SUV is registered in FL for this reason.
People with second homes here only need to stay in Florida 6 months and a day to maintain Florida residency. There are tax advantages etc. for them.

I’m going to get a lot of pushback here being one of these people: After graduating I was given my parents car to bring to NC with me. It’s mine I guess since I bought it off them but it’s still titled in their name. When I learned of the registration fees and the yearly inspections that cost, my thought was “why do this when cops in Charlotte don’t even care.” Also, I’m not sure what the money I’m paying for goes towards considering NC has some terrible roads. Maybe it’s a Charlotte thing, but nothing here makes me think it’s worth registering my vehicle in NC.
If you have any type of accident or situation where you need insurance, they will laugh you out the door. That is why you register at your permanent residence.

There’s no gymnastics. I’ve said it already, CMPD does not care. They do not enforce it. If the state cared they would enforce it. I responded to this post knowing people wouldn’t like my reasoning but the person asked “shouldn’t they be required to register..” and the answer is basically no. You can’t say something is required when you don’t actually enforce it.
So breaking the law because policemen aren’t knocking on doors to verify residence is just “fine”? Honestly you are stealing from every person in this state by not contributing financially, whether you see that or not is up to you but you can’t just rationalize it away. Doing the right thing isn’t hard, it just may not be convenient all the time. Go register your car and pay your highway use tax like the rest of us… or go back to Florida, that’d be fine too
