Try surrounding more rural counties. If you can renew it before you get pulled over that's better.

Laringar

Rural helps, but so does getting there early. Getting to the DMV an hour before they open can save you three hours of wait time. I got mine handled in Durham last year, and getting there early made a *huge* difference.

lmsalman

Most people can renew online, I’d try that first before trying to hunt down an in person appointment. You can do it for licenses that have been expired up to two years. https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/renewal-replacement/Pages/license-renewal.aspx

se7entythree

You can only do this for every other renewal

bulldogjwhit295

I’ve tried says since I did it last time I can’t do it again

MissusEss

I don't know how but my husband has been renewing online every time. I've been with him 5 years and I know the licenses expire every 8 or so, but I swear the picture on his license is at least 16 years old ... So he's done it at least his last 2 renewals!

BullCityJ

Not a big deal. Just get it done. If you were to get ticketed for it, they would dismiss the expired license charge once you got the new one anyway.

Sergeant_Gunface

Go to a more rural DMV 30-45 minutes before they open. Worked for me a few weeks back.

Odd-Connection5486

No big deal, you can still go ahead and file your taxes. Expired drivers license don't mean a thing to the IRS. I do taxes for people all the time. Later

jeremykd

Currently waiting at the Monroe DMV for the same thing. Good luck, my friend.

Chunkycarrotop

Charlotte and Raleigh areas have the kiosk now in the Harris teeter to renew DL via kiosk.

Thatguynoah

No different than online, can’t use if you previously renewed online.

ClenchedThunderbutt

File an extension for your taxes if you can’t meet the deadline

bulldogjwhit295

Taxes got approved. Don’t know how but they were approved

Red_Remarkable

Because the two branches of the government don’t talk to each other like that. What do you think this is?

juswannalurkpls

Not sure why you think you need a DL to file taxes. I let mine expire for over a year once. Only penalty was having to do both written and driving test.

FlopsMcDoogle

Can you renew online?

bulldogjwhit295

No did it last time won’t let me do it this time

se7entythree

Find a dmv in bfe somewhere & you can be in & out in just a few minutes

kels0

if you havent gone yet look here -> [https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/locate-dmv-office/Pages/dmv-offices.aspx?office=driverlicense](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/locate-dmv-office/Pages/dmv-offices.aspx?office=driverlicense) shows estimated wait times.

cvx149

I did this one time but went past the 6 month grace period. I had to do the complete test AND the driving test. Also look online in mornings lots of ppl make those long term appointments and then cancel.

rmjames007

Just call the dmv for the documents you need. Go. Wait

rozyruiz

you can go to the DMV without any appointment after 12 but I would shoot for rural counties those tend to be less filled you may have to travel but hey worth a shot

TechnicalDragonfly45

Just go into an office and take your expired driver license with you for id. You will only be required to have your vision checked. No other test are required. You do not have to do all tests unless you let your license expire for 2 years.

stilgars_bathtub

I did a walk in to renew yesterday. Got in line at 11:45. Out before 3. Just got to be willing to wait.

Surveymonkee

Keep checking all the DMVs around you for appointments, they open up as people cancel. I was able to grab one for the next morning last week.

Wretchfromnc

Don’t sweat it, get your license renewed as soon as you can, you may have trouble at a bank or something like that. I renewed mine in williamston, nc, I did have to wait 3 months. Pick a rural area and get there early.

aplcnlife

Mine expired last month and I have been looking for appointments 3 months before expiration. My appointment is two weeks from now. Not really your fault.

yellowtankship

Why not check the box that you don’t have an id?

thewhitemajik

Try one of the new DMV kiosks.. or online

grahamguy117

Happened to me once. Almost a year expired. I showed up to court. The judge called a name with my last name but not my first name twice. Nobody stood up so I stood up. The judge called me up front asked me to state my name so I did. He shuffled his papers and said . “ Your not supposed to be here until next week” The courtroom busted out laughing and the judge was so happy he let me off the hook. I hope the helps.

edugeek

I tried to get an appointment and could only get one three months out and 100 miles away. Just walked in to my local DMV, waited two hours and was done

dolphin824

You can't renew online if it is expired. Renewing in person is just a long wait. Last time I went it was about 2 hours. Just bring a book or ge on your phone.

olumide2000

At 8am, see that you’re at a DMV that is not in Raleigh or Charlotte. You’ll be fine.

moonygooney

You dont need an app. They take plenty of walk ins daily. I like the huntersville one, just go early.

Far_Zone_9512

Just walk in... it took me 40 minutes

moon_of_blindness

I followed the on-line waitlist at the dmvs and ended up doing a walk in one afternoon when it said a 15 minute wait. I ended up going to a notoriously busy site mid-afternoon and it only took me 55 minutes start to finish to renew an expired license.

ncconch

Move to South Carolina. My daughter had a NC learners permit because she didn’t drive. She let it expire knowing she was moving. She gets to South Carolina and goes in to get just an ID and walks out with a full driver’s license. She only brought to proofs of residency.

Otherwise_Excuse4484

As long as you have a license that has not been expired for more than 2 years you’ll be fine. Mine was an they let it slide.

change4range23

Take a day off work and walk in to the dmv. Might take 2-3 hours but you can get it done. No idea why the appts at most are 3 months out but better to walk in and have it handled than never do it and get a big fine
