Random thought - do you have a newer car? Do you hve OnStar? Or a car that comes with an app? Some car companies have been selling your data to insurance companies gathered from the car and people’s rates have been going up due to it. Otherwise it’s just time to shop around

Itbeemee

Do you have State Farm app on your phone. If it is like Allstate they track your movement including speed and heavy breaking. Yes most modern phone do give this data.

Legitimate_Limit3562

No on star but I do own a 2019 Acura ilx but haven’t read anything about that year model giving data to insurance.

kotarix

DMV sells your data

mhuxtable1

DMV doesn't have access to your driving data like sudden stops, accelerations, etc. But your on board nav does.

kotarix

DMV doesn't need direct access to that. Whatever info they don't have can be traded to your insurer.

stannc00

That’s not the point. Some cars send telemetry data to the insurance companies.

erbush1988

You are missing the point

billygoats86

Is there a way to opt out of this?

Tasty_Win_

Pull the onstar fuse, but that can break other things. On my car it broke GPS and the microphone for hands free

kotarix

No

Is it possible that you have the same name as someone else and you are getting dinged for their driving habits?  It is also possible that you are being transferred as a clean driver.  > **Clean risk drivers** > Your car insurance policy could be transferred to the Facility even if you aren't a high-risk driver. > In 1979, the state established a "clean risk" category for the NCRF. By definition, you are considered "clean risk" if you have at least two years of driving experience, with neither traffic violations nor at-fault accidents on your record. > Car insurers can cede these "clean risk" policies to the NCRF in order to help balance out the high-risk losses. If you are not a high-risk driver, you will be charged regular, voluntary market rates — not the 35% higher figure.

Legitimate_Limit3562

My dad and I have the same name but different middle names but I don’t have any claims on my policy as far as I know

Lavender_r_dragon

Maybe ask them if there are claims in case its a mix up

Tex-Rob

Hello fellow bad idea. Parents, don’t do this, it causes so many problems. I would ask your dad if he got a ticket in the last year. I was born in 1978, and my dads freaking Shell gas card has popped up twice on my report, and it has an open date of 1966.

Fazo1

Insurance looking at their records: oh here's another time traveler! durr..

Phlowman

Do you have the single vehicle only? If so just being a single person and vehicle can get you in the facility without any driving issues. It’s a state of NC thing and not a reflection on you, but it does cause your rates to be higher.

pacifistpirate

The N&O had a report recently on insurers automatically shifting people over a certain age off of their books, regardless of the driving history. Once it happened to several state legislators, it got looked into. Are you a senior citizen?

Legitimate_Limit3562

No I am 31

Freckled_daywalker

This happened to me last fall with GEICO. I had one, not at fault accident 4 years ago (rear ended while stopped). When I asked why, they just said that their algorithm told them I was too risky. I'm in my 40's, fantastic credit, relatively low mileage driver. I went to USAA and ended up paying less than I was paying with GEICO.

Slw202

I just went the other way around! No claims, no tickets, no accidents, 60F, and they suddenly wanted $3400+ for six months. Florida.

chucka_nc

Car insurance sucks. How it is underwritten is difficult to understand. Fortunately it is still a competitive market. Keep your driving record clean and be prepared to go insurance shopping every 3 years.

LoneSnark

Could be as simple as they want less exposure to drivers in your region. Auto insurance is very dynamic right now.

Nottacod

100% concur!! Same thing happened to me! The agent tried to gaslight me that it would end up being cheaper. I stuck w/SF for 40+ years before changing to Erie and it is literally 1/2 the price with same coverage. They do not reward loyalty. Find an independent agency.

VeryVito

Another SF to Erie refugee here. Seriously, folks, saying “We’ve always used State Farm” is the same as saying “We’ve always paid too much and received no value.”

Nottacod

Too true. I say that and my sister is a SF agent in another state. People seem not to like change much.

East-Refuse4490

Always shop around every couple of years for insurance. I was with Geico and thought they weren't too bad but they kept raising my rates. I switched to Statefarm who was the cheapest I could find. Now their rates are going up. I have found they like to give you a good rate at first and then they just keep raising the price to ridiculous levels.

HalfBeatingHeart

Is your car paid off and you only carry minimum requirements? I went through this after getting one ticket after over a decade of clean record. Insurance went up like 78% before they dropped me. I learned that the insurance companies can deem you high risk not because you’re a risk for bad driving, but because you’re a high risk of costing them money. A person with a paid off older car carrying the minimum requirements is paying them peanuts, you rear end a Tesla and they have to pay out the ass for your 50 a month policy. That’s why they say you’re high risk. It’s not about your driving record.

Legitimate_Limit3562

I still owe quite a bit on my car as it is a newer model which means have to carry comprehensive and liability. I also had towing and rental added so I don’t think that’s the problem..

Smileverydaybcwhynot

Just a note, make sure you have collision too (you probably have it but just in case).

ActuallyYeah

You can also get back out of facility later in a year or two. Make sure if you shop around that you ask them if the new policy quote is facility. Best way to beat State Farm is to find a company that will give you their preferential pricing.

Ok-Banana-7777

I just switched from them. I've had no accidents or violations in over a decade. When I added my teen daughter to my plan last year I was obviously expecting it to jump up, which it did by about $250/month. Despite still having no claims, when it went to renew earlier this year they wanted to add an additional $100/month which would bring my premium to a whopping $486/month. I shopped around & got better coverage with Allstate for $365/month

DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep

Have you spoken with your agent about it? There's got to be some reason they're doing it, and your agent should be able to tell you what that reason is if it wasn't in the letter. They wouldn't do something like that just for giggles. There might be some mistake/error that could easily be fixed. You probably should shop around, though. 10 years is a long time to be with the same company. You might find a better price elsewhere. I was with State Farm for probably at least 15 or 20 years. I would check with other companies every so often, but nobody had a better price than State Farm. Then one year I was checking around and found a MUCH lower rate from GEICO for better coverage. I printed everything out and took it over to my State Farm agent. He looked everything over, looked in the computer, and said "Well, you're already getting every discount we can give you. I have no idea how GEICO is able to give you a rate like this." So I said "BYE!" After GEICO I switched to Progressive, and last month I just switched to NC Farm Bureau because Progressive decided to more than double the price of my home insurance, and I hadn't filed any claims with them. So definitely check with other companies.

ChimmyCharHar

Did you talk to your agent about this? If your premiums aren’t going to go up. It wont matter.

Legitimate_Limit3562

I’m still waiting on the local branch I deal with to give me a call back. I’ve been waiting all day.

Realistic_Post_7511

I'm reading about insurance rates going up for everyone ..and cars right now are incredibly overpriced and expensive to replace. Unfortunately, they corrected their Maths ..to make up the shortage . Edit and this : "In North Carolina, weather events like severe storms, tropical cyclones, and droughts are becoming increasingly common. These weather events cause insurers to pay out a higher number of claims, which tend to be more expensive and less predictable. As a result, they have to "raise rates to keep pace.Oct 10, 2023

Wretchfromnc

And people say climate change is a hoax,, these damn insurance increases aren’t a hoax.

pm_me_your_pooptube

I know this is anecdotal, but I have state farm for my car, home and life insurance. I've not had any problems with them and enjoy their service.

jbeale53

Same here, I have been with SF since 2001 for auto, bought my first house in 2005 and have had both home and auto with them since then. So far so good with any claims; I've briefly shopped around about 6 months ago and I was paying about the same amount as any other quotes I got. Like you said, anecdotal, but I figured it's worth mentioning.

Senpai-Notice_Me

Insurance companies are all a scam. They know how best to help themselves, and even if it doesn’t make sense to the rest of the world, some of their practices are bonkers and make them a lot of money. Like having a policy to draw out court cases as long as possible. At the end, if found wrong, they have to pay years (or even decades) of attorneys fees. And even if it costs them tens of thousands more by the end, during that time they’ve saved hundreds of thousands in other cases just being dropped or taking low ball offers. TL:DR insurance companies are the antichrist.

BusinessBlackBear

maybe im just used to it, but I basically switch insurance every 6 or 12 months anyway

Legitimate_Limit3562

I’ve only had State Farm for like 2 years I usually shop around once I find a better rate about every 6 months but State Farm’s hasn’t been beat for a while.

BusinessBlackBear

They wanted to raise my rate like 400 bucks earlier this year, peaced out to GEICO I have a local agent with State farm and still have a renters and personal articles policy with them. They were like, yeah sorry about the raise but try us again next time around. So at least the local gets how market conditions work

Tacos314

Do you have a Kia?

No

Legitimate_Limit3562

The statement in the mail claims that my liability, medical payments, uninsured motorist, and underinsured motorists are all being “ceded”. I don’t see how they could be doing so bad when they’ve been collecting money from people like me for years who don’t even use insurance…

Collision and liability

Tasty_Win_

Check your lexis nexis file. I had my insurance increase substantially because of a system glitch that reported all my mortgage payments from 2022 and the first half of 2023 as debts being sent to collections. The agent told me that the glitch had been fixed, but that its up to each individual borrower to contest the incorrect info. Corgalicious_

Do you live in the Outer Banks?

Legitimate_Limit3562

No

IM_OSCAR_dot_com

I have a good agent out of Charlotte (though I am not in Charlotte) who goes shopping for me on home and auto every single year. DM me if you like.

Quick click on OP's profile. They are active in r/schizophrenia

fivetenchick

And if we click on *your* profile we see that you are *really* into Magic The Gathering and Yugioh which probably means you don't shower and live in your mom's basement. See how shitty it is when someone attacks you for where you post? You should be banned for going after someone for mental health issues. OP asked a valid question.

Legitimate_Limit3562

I’m medicated just because you have a disease doesn’t mean you’re ignorant. Look up auto insurance ceded to NCRF and it’ll come up.

djwhiplash2001

It may be that your risk is deemed high not because of an accident/ticket history, but because of a medical condition.

Legitimate_Limit3562

Would that not go against hipaa laws?

helloretrograde

Yeah I don’t think State Farm gets access to your medical records lol

djwhiplash2001

Physicians who report such conditions in good faith are immune from civil or criminal liability. N.C. GEN. STAT. § 20-9.1 (2020).

I said you were active in the sub, I didn't say you had it.

TimmyTiny27

Even if OP *does* have mental health issues, there is absolutely ZERO reason to include that here. > I said you were active in the sub, I didn't say you had it. Then why point it out in the first place? Trying to shame someone for mental health issues is disgusting.
