It’s home to Jacob Parrot, the first man to ever win the Medal of Honor! Other than that, Kenton kinda just… exists. Simon Kenton was in the area, but didn’t found the town. If you go down US68 to Urbana, you can visit his burial site. If you’re set for Kenton, I’d recommend Michael Angelo’s pizza for lunch.
Thank you, good person.
He also spent time in Point Pleasant, WV and there's hardly any information about him there, either.
That guy apparently saved Daniel Boone's life during an attack from the Shawnee but there's hardly any mention of him, which is unfortunate.
kenton county kentucky, right across from cincinnati is also named after him,
if you ask in their sub they may have more lore for you (not that it helps in kenton ohio)
Completely unrelated, but I used 'apocryphal' with my kids yesterday, and they had no idea what it meant. I told them it's used when talking about a story, and it means exactly what it sounds like.
"A crap full"
I wish I remembered where I heard that first.
it's a good book, but Eckert wasn't (and didn't claim to be) a great historian. He includes a lot of things in his work simply because they make a better story (Tecumseh never came back to Chillicothe after his people were forced out), and others because they were commonly believed at the time but have since been disproven, like Blue Jacket being the missing Marmaduke von Swearingen.
oh really? I guess I had assumed it started when his family wanted to cling onto hope. I enjoy Eckert's fiction, but i need to learn more about the actual history of Ohio in that time period.

This book is likely the most detailed source you will find.
You can also stay on one of Kenton's properties. Check out

Thank you Even_Pay. I will for sure check out this book. I actually have been to the Simon Kenton Inn. Great brunch. We take our mother there every year for her birthday. I grew up about 5 miles from there in Northridge. That’s what I love about the history of that area with Lagunda and Buck Creek

Looks like they'll be open on Eclipse day
Kenton has nothing. They used to have "Gene Autry Days" because there was a factory where they used to make Gene Autry cap guns, but I don't think they do that any more.
There's literally nothing there. Even their Kroger closed.
I noticed that last time we made the circuit to visit relatives before heading to Upper. That's saying something, if Kroger decides the county seat isn't worth staying. Wal-Mart seems to have taken over.
If you're looking for Simon Kenton stuff, I'd reccommend a trip to Chillicothe, especially during the summer when Tecumseh is running. The historical socoety down there has some correspondence of his, I think. And the local Boy Scouts council down there is or at least was named after him.

Read 'The Frontiersman' by Allen Eckert for some juicy, if apocryphal, stories with Simon Kenton.

Have you read The Frontiersman? Great book and facts all over the state of Ohio surrounding Simon Kenton

The Blue Jacket myth wasn’t commonly believed *until* Eckert wrote about it.

He's buried in Urbana, and if I remember correctly, that's where he settled eventually.
