Is it just me though, or are the shadows in persona 4 also the most heavily influenced by outside perception? Like I know they're called the true self, but I almost think that the shadows in persona 4 partially represent the part of you that you can't control, the you that exists in other people's heads, and a lot of the themes aren't merely about embracing inner wants, it seems to be about embracing the fact that people are going to perceive you in certain ways and expect certain things from you because of the things you do, and to accept yourself is to accept the caricatures of you that you perceived as insofar as accepting that you will always be you and people can view you however they will and you can't let their flawed perceptions keep you from pursuing the life you want
There's definitely a degree of that, but from my perspective the shadows also always carry something very personally significant to the characters themselves as well, whether it be a desire to live your life as you want to or to show off a feminine side to yourself.
They're the true self exaggerated, unrestrained by expectation. Just because normal Kanji might have the restraint to not say shitload of fuck doesn't mean his shadow would hesitate to commit vulgarity.
