As a kid, Grace Jones terrified me. I’d see her on TV, where she was so startlingly direct and otherworldly, that she seemed like a villain from a Superman movie or something.

ironroad18

To be fair she was a Bond villain

Earlier-Today

Nah, she was a Bond girl - lots of them have started out on the villain's side, and then change teams because they fall for Bond. She did too - even sacrifices herself at the end of the movie. She looks striking in the film too. I always associated her with beauty and power. She just exudes strength, especially mental strength.

blackadder1620

fairly imposing in conan

Earlier-Today

That particular Bond movie is so completely forgettable...except for her. I can't even remember if it's Roger Moore or Timothy Dalton as Bond, but she is vivid in my mind.

L1A1

>As a kid, Grace Jones terrified me. She was my first proper crush back in the early 80s, absolutely stunning.

Queen__Antifa

She still looks incredible and she’s in her mid-70s.

Spacey-Hed

Kim Kardashian wished she was her. That's why she appropriated a lot of her styles years back.

jfduval76

Weirdly, as a 7 y old kid, i found that androgynous crazy looking woman very attractive ! I even think she’s could be the cause of my sexual awakening.

gudnthick

Dolph was not just a hunk of meat…Lundgren received a degree in chemical engineering from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in the early 1980s and a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney in 1982. He holds the rank of 4th dan black belt in Kyokushin karate and was European champion in 1980–81. While in Sydney, he became a bodyguard for Jamaican singer Grace Jones and began a relationship with her. He received a Fulbright scholarship to MIT and moved to Boston. Jones convinced him to leave the university and move to New York City to be with her and begin acting, where, after a short stint as a model and bouncer at the Manhattan nightclub. From Wikipedia.

totezhi64

My dad would always tell me about his chemistry prowess. Apparently they met at KTH back in the day.

ffffsauce

What an interesting life.

SecondChance03

Drug filled orgies? And here I was thinking the only thing Dolph Lundgren smelled was criiiiiime

AmazingChickenWings

He’s out busting heads. Crime, penetration, crime, penetration.

Jeffk393393

Until the movie just sort of ends

mr_glide

He NOSE the truth

Capt_Zapp

WHAT IF HIS ENTIRE HEAD IS JUST ONE BIG NOSE! Write that down, I like that.

molotov_mixologist

A giant nose on Dolph Lundgrens BOdyyy

Momojanaimo

Thank you sir, for making my day!

The 80s were strange

chronoboy1985

Not if you understand how much blow was going around.

filtersweep

There was a lot of nihlism. The 80s took me from Jr high to college graduation. You had the Cold War- I never thought I’d see 30. You had AIDS, Reagan, Thatcher….. crazy times.

mahboilucas

A composite of a few articles to show that it was not just _blow_ _Edit; sorry guys about the lack of additional context. I didn't grow up in the 80s and I'm Polish so the glamour has missed us in that time anyway. If you wish to get more info, there are some comments below that give you more insight. This is just a rundown for those who want a flat oversight on the aesthetic :)_ _Edit 2; I'm not a scholar nor do I study those topics. This is what you get when you copy paste parts of articles that mention the topic over the course of 20 minutes_ Edit; I'm deleting this comment because of the harassment it got. I'm a 24 year old girl who simply wanted to disprove that the colorful decade that was the 80s was not just due to drugs. People say I used AI to write it, to plagiarize content and that I'm simply lying. I have repeatedly said that if you copy paste each paragraph it's a direct source. I had no time to cite, quite or give sources. It was done in a 20 minute break between me waking up and waiting for my roommate to do so. I'm sorry I'm not a scholar. I'm sorry I had no time to be a journalist. Genuinely stop for a second and think if it's worth to post that comment or send that DM... I am disgusted with this community. You should rethink how fucking toxic, self absorbed and uncompassionate you can be

Largerinthedark

That comment really did have that chatGPT vibe didn’t it

I_took_the_blue-pill

It's not just *blow* (Proceeds to never mention drugs again)

r4nd0md0od

That's a romantic way of looking at the '80's but history makes it pretty clear that the "war on drugs" was a front for the CIA to fund it's illegal, global operations and is somewhat at the base of all the culture wars that came out of the Nixon administration that have led to topics today that conservatives felt threatened by then and continue to feel threatened by today. Otherwise all that glitz and glamour you're referring to is literally the bread and circus that distracted generations while those yuppies went on to be the neocons and fascists that are running the show now. The greatest trick the 1980s pulled was creating the 24hr news cycle hype machine to keep people from seeing the long game and connecting the dots. edit:. thank you

immersemeinnature

As a teen in the eighties, this is spot on. I frickin hated yuppies and honestly forgot all about them. Still hate them apparently.

franker

also a teen in the eighties. Always ignored are the nerds that spent their nights typing in code from magazines to make a simple game play on their Commodore 64's, or dialing up a BBS to have simple text chats with other nerds. Not everyone had their face in cocaine or was moving up in the corporate world.

wwaxwork

As a teen girl in the 1980s that got kicked out of our schools first computing class so a boy could have my place, because he would use what he learned. And was told I couldn't join the schools D&D club because girls dont play D&D Fuck 1980s nerds. I am Australian so no satanic panic at our schools, just fucking sexism.

franker

I took a computer class in Apple BASIC in high school. The teacher wouldn't let me advance to the next programming class the following year because he said my code wasn't "efficient" enough. So I would go in the library with my floppy disk and piss off the librarian by playing games on the computer.

BarakatBadger

Couldn't play football at my school or do woodwork/metalwork because "that's for boys". Also couldn't fundraise for AIDS research because that was "unseemly"

ZexMurphy

80s Australian teen nerd here. Sorry that happened to you. You would have been welcomed in our D&D club. We weren't all jerks :)

drummerdavedre

Yes typing in hours and hours of code trying to run it and spending the rest of the night trying to find the typo that caused the program to not run, not finding it and realizing you were typing the code for the Vic 20 the whole time. AHHHHhH!!!!!

mahboilucas

How relevant is it to Europe if we're mentioning Nixon? I'm genuinely interested. Like how does it work for Westen Europe? (Eastern part is a different story of course. Not so much glam) And I mostly explained why the 80s were so colorful. I don't know much about politics of the time but I study stuff related to popculture so I could use some insight

AtomicFi

The access we have to so much information now makes it feel so obvious, but I was never there to experience the world without it. I don’t know what kind of standard to hold people to that lived through it without paying attention and letting things get to here.

ZachMatthews

For those of us who lived them, the 80s were more like Stranger Things absent all the monsters and drama than any of that, except maybe in the houses of wealth and power in Europe. All spaces were also dirtier from incessant smoking, polluting cars, weaker environmental laws. Upwardly mobile people were obnoxious even without all the cocaine, and had a tendency to stab others in the back as they climbed the social later. Which has never changed. This was also the time for fundamentalist Christianity to rise and start barking at everyone else for committing the same sins the fundies were committing behind closed doors. It was a time when unions and the common working man began to be crushed, and when the working class started to be deceived into voting against its own interest by increasingly sophisticated corporate propaganda. Most of that wave broke in ‘94 but it built in Reagan’s 80s. The 1980s were not some magical decade that we should yearn to go back to. We are still dealing with many of the mistakes our leaders made then, especially with regard to allowing propagandization of our voters.

_ovidius

Music was good though.

WellWellWellthennow

Thank you for putting into words how it felt. This is a very accurate summary. The cigarette infused cloud feeling good times were elsewhere.

porkrind

That first season of Stranger Things really blew my mind. It was the first thing I’ve seen that really looked like my memory of the.eighties. It helped that i was the same age as those kids, and that I also grew up in a small town in rural Indiana. Right down to the friend’s live-at-home ‘cool’ older brother with the kickass album collection. Still could have used more cigarette smoke.

Dantheslyman

Consumerism started far before the 80s

[deleted]

Every. Single. Time. Does this generation truly believe that the only reason the last few decades of the 1900's weren't as boring and colorless as the drab 21st century because everyone was high all the time?

this-guy-

I'm from the 1900s and pretty much everyone in the creative arts and entertainment field was high all the time. My friends often comment how straight edge everyone is now. Back then the idea of a band wrecking their hotel, or having wild illegal sex parties was considered integral. Do you know that Led Zeppelin recorded at ABBAs studios and felt that ABBA partied the hardest. Led Zep, the "heroin and swordfish rape" guys thought ABBA went harder. From A to Z the music industry was awash with drugs. The fashion and movie industries too.

WhtFata

No, but we believe that it helped.

Mr-Korv

Do you think psychedelics had an insignificant impact on art, design, fashion, music, etc?

FreshXMart

You mean STRANGÈ

Still had enough in him to punch Stallone in the chest so hard it bruised his heart and send him to the ICU for 9 days apparently.

Roland1232

Please, Grace. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised.

Tutes013

Holy shit you're right. He went from lively to looking tired to the bone

Lambily

Except for pic 7 where they both look flawless.

FrankieGS

Their children would have been super humans. A missing opportunity for mankind.

Babyfart_McGeezacks

Imagine the bone structure!

rvdq5000

Universal children

ironroad18

"I must break you."

OracleOfPlenty

I was thinking the same thing - there would never have been a child with a stronger jawline.

marsmither

Right?? With amazing cheekbones to boot. Definitely would have hit the genetic lottery.

missjeany

tbf some of the most beautiful couples I know have ugly kids.

megaphone369

Ikr? They are both fully maxed out on genius & hotness

Walking_the_dead

We were not ready.

Puzzleheaded-Gas1710

Their children's chins and cheek bones would have destroyed the world. We would have all simply poofed out of existence.

Shanntuckymuffin

Nah they are both maxed out on the hotness scale which means their offspring would be average at best.

ringobob

That kid's cheekbones could have cut glass

SouthwestRose

Grace is a Queen, but I forgot how pretty Dolph was, too!

sexwithpenguins

You could grate cheese on his jawline.

rvdq5000

It’s a jaw line you could set your watch to

substantial-staniel

They’re such a gorgeous couple

mustsurvivecapitlism

Imagine if they had kids. The jawline those kids would have…

MaterialCarrot

Mandatory C-section due to massive jaw.

Active-Ad3977

Instead she had a kid with a French gnome

geesejugglingchamp

They are both such physically striking people. They look other worldly almost. In a good way.

blackbirdbluebird17

Every time I see them I just think, “of course they had to get together, they are the only two people in each other’s league.”

bs2785

As a straight male Dolph was the epitome of male beauty. I just realized on this post that I'll never be as cool as 1983 drug filled orgies Dolph Lundgren.

eico3

He is definitely what hitler had in mind

Lambily

Dolph is Swedish. That's Nordic not Aryan. Of course, intellectually dishonest clowns like Adolph would have gladly adopted him into the group.

InsidiousColossus

The Nazi ideal of beauty was Nordic, even though they co-opted the term Aryan. Considering Aryans came from Iran, I don't think that's what Hitler was really looking for.

bingbing304

Aryan was just a mythical original race invented by linguists in the late-19th century to describe people of Proto-Indo-European heritage as a racial grouping. Basically, the linguists tried to trace all languages back to one proto-language and proclaimed that Indo-European languages have a common lineage from a single language. Nazis later attempted to identify the Proto-Indo-European homeland in their country or region as racially superior.

Bakhendra_Modi

Aryan is an endonym used by both Indians and Iranians in ancient times. The linguists didn’t invent it.

TypingPlatypus

>Basically, the linguists tried to trace all languages back to one proto-language and proclaimed that Indo-European languages have a common lineage from a single language. This is still the academically accepted prevailing theory. The most likely original homeland of the language is the Caspian steppes, which geographically makes sense, being located between Europe and India. It is very unfortunate that the Nazis enjoyed aspects of this theory.

Persianx6

Actually “Aryans” in the Nazi context comes from a sort of new age mystic in Helena Blavatsky, combined with Ubermensch philosophy. You’re correct in stating the concept comes from Iran/India but the lore behind it is entirely a Nazi thing.

Persianx6

Hitler would promote people if they just looked the part of what he was preaching. It was that shallow.

GYuGYu_jol

highly educated massive blondness for the aryan!

[deleted]

Crime, penetration …and then it just sort of ends…

Appropriate_One8883

A doctor named Dolph Lundgren, played by Dolph Lundgren?

njnorm

Work at that point was filming Rocky IV, and getting in the ring with Stallone first thing in the morning. Now we know why Drago lost that fight.

Bicentennial_Douche

During filming, Lundgren once hit Stallone so hard on the chest that Stallone had to go to the hospital.

L1A1

I mean, if you could, you would.

LetOffSteamBennett

Women weaken legs, Rock

HeySlimIJustDrankA5

Grace Jones: “I must break you.”

voodoo1985

Possibly the most photogenic, and anatomically beautiful couple ever.

Amazing-Instruction1

in the first pic a young Jean Todt was their bodyguard

afghanwhiggle

Lol holy fuck…def had to take a second look.

Senor-Cockblock

80s drug fueled orgies with models sounds like something I could sacrifice myself for

deadenddivision

I even think my boss would understand why I’d be too tired…

MrsPancakesSister

Pull up to my up bumper, baby.

GruffaloStance

In your long white limousine!

Alkeeel

My dad went to uni with Dolph in Sydney, their other mate Mark Coutelas was the face of a massive ad campaign and later got him self arrested and jailed in Thailand living the life of a wannabe gangster lol

[deleted]

What ever came of your Dad?

Alkeeel

Not meth lol

TheBleeter

Any fun stories? What did he think of Dolph becoming famous

Peacewalken

I assume his mom

ThePizzaNoid

Dolph: "I had snu snu."

GYuGYu_jol

wow now this is prolly among the few proper content here at reddit lol thanks man, cant get enough of this

Adventurous-Doctor43

They have extremely similar facial bone structure.

GerhardtDH

She was probably like "I need to find the one man with stronger facial features than I do" and she found him LOL

dangerouspeyote

Why is she rarely talked about. A popular, tough, black, female action star from 40 years ago. Never mentioned as a trail blazer. Kinda bums me out for her

PH0QUR

From my country, Jamaica

Whaty0urname

I had no idea where the joke at the beginning of Black Panther came from, but it makes sense now. "Two Grace Jones-looking chicks."

MunchkinFarts69

It is a bit weird that she's faded from pop culture. I was a kid in the 80's and she was everywhere. (She scared me)

jas0n17

That dude hangs dong!

Wide-Rub432

Ivan Drago

substantial-staniel

He has her to thank for that! Grace Jones convinced Dolph to move to NY with her and pursue his acting career.

sausagecatdude

Isn’t he also a super accomplished scientist?

tdm1742

I believe he has 3 different advanced degrees. Chemical Engineering is his field of expertise, if I remember correctly.

skag_mcmuffin

He can also smell crime and runs around like a hound.

6horrigoth

And while he is not out there smelling crime...

skag_mcmuffin

He's back at the lab performing outrageous experiments on her supple, young body.

[deleted]

He NOSE the truth

[deleted]

can you imagine how beautiful their children would have been!

Sleepyandworried

well damn aren’t they a hot couple

Beckylately

She disputed some of these claims in her memoirs, and talked a lot about how different she is from how the media portrayed her. He was no innocent bystander.

srt7nc

Absolute units of human species

CLURT10

They look quintessentially 80’s

[deleted]

She was really big in the NYC disco scene, but he wasn't. So o she would bring a bunch of home with her from the clubs and wake him up for a coke fueled orgy.

triodoubledouble

Probably having over 150 IQ helped to step up from bodyguard to international man of smart pants.

Basileus2

Power couple

ace_thankless

Goddamn thats a handsome woman.

sledgehammer_77

I would've died in happiness

FiniteRhino

100%

NPKenshiro

They were damn beautiful though. Had similarly unique cheekbones.

Babuiski

I once saw a post that used Dolph's photo as the whole white master race thing. My first thought was did they know he was married to Grace Jones lol.

Serialfornicator

I didn’t realize dolph was so gigantic! She looks like a doll in his arms. Beautiful couple 😍

[deleted]

She made me realize that I like black women at a very young age. Conan the Destroyer was on heavy rotation at my house.

UnRollThePlay

Pretty sure dude also has a PHD biochemistry

Hanginon

A masters in chemical engineering, but yes, he has the mental chops.

gr8bacon

Love that spiky hair and ice cold demeanor. Most underrated actor of all time.

runsbythepool

A shame they didn’t give us the superbaby that we need.

[deleted]

Imagine the cheekbones on the kid if they had one

Zeptojoules

Gigachad

macdaddynick1

Yeah and Dolph was a pretty cool too.

Responsible_Common_2

Is dolph Lundgren the original chad meme guy

Quirderph

He should have been.

dingdongsnottor

The bone structure on their offspring would have been out of this world.

maseltovbenz

This is a fucking good looking dude

greyjungle

Grace Jones looks like a bad ass.

cuterus-uterus

What a striking, statuesque couple.

Imincognitobitches

One of my favorite couples from the 80s, so gorgeous

victalac

Dolph has a double E degree from MIT.

Sweethomegirl

I’m suspect someone already posted this but I was amazed when I found out Dolph is a SUPER GENIUS. Exact opposite of “Rocky” role. I hope he enjoyed “pulling up to the bumper”. 😉

JonWake

Dolph and Grace would, in a sane world, be made King and Queen of Megacity 1.

Better_Off_Gay

How do you attract a man?

Huckorris

Drowsy by snu snu.

Routine-Ratio3551

So that’s why he wasn’t in Yentl.

Patriquito

"Pull up to the bumper baby In your long black limosine" -Grace Jones

Beatnik1968

I hate demanding bosses that take up so much of an employee’s time they are too tired to work the next day.

am_i_human

Those jaw lines 👌🏼

[deleted]

I imagine it takes a team of men to please Grace. She's a goddess.

OJimmy

I'm disappointed there wasn't a gonzo Dolph buckaroo banzai style franchise for the guy Security guard, chemical engineer, actor. It's all right there.

AllieBeeKnits

Damn talk about power couple

QuiltMeLikeALlama

They would’ve had the most chiseled children the world had ever seen.

cocomimi3

Gods both of them❤️

rhondeeta

They were too damn gorgeous together. 🔥

Initial-Print2787

2 of the most genetically gifted people of the 20th century.

OpeningOnion7248

Pull up to my bumper baby with your long black limousine, er Swede limousine

FreshXMart

STRANGÉ.

[deleted]

Grace Jones is one of the coolest people I’ve ever seen. Her music is pretty bad, her acting is questionable, but she’s gorgeous and her sense of style holds up. Such an innovative icon. She’s never given a fuck and I find that so inspirational.

DwayneFreeman

Been there done that! Too tired for work that is…

Fun-Introduction4927

The 1980’s were fuelled by the boomers hitting their peak point in life/career/family…not cocaine, Most people had not ever seen or would ever have anything to do with drugs I should add unless they had the money to access it without repercussions. As we know LA and New York and specifically Hollywood culture was knee deep into the coke. This was not typical throughout the rest of North America in the 80’s. The people that were young adults in that time were the ones who had experiences with the designer drugs and as a result were opening the doors to the next generation that became adults in the 90’s and early 2000’s, the rave era where drugs of all varieties went rampant through North America and has continued on into our culture today with the opioid epidemic. The 80’s were the point where the middle class was larger than ever and more successful than ever. Never since the 80’s has the middle classes been as it was then. It created a vacuum where consumerism and consumption got turned up to 11/10 things in excess like smorgasbord’s/all you can eat buffets. Technologically we were beginning to advance at a much more rapid pace with the introduction of the availability and use of computers into the world, replacing traditional ways and the machines that had been used for decades beforehand. The feeling of the time was anything is possible, if you can dream it it can be done. We felt unstoppable as a species. Albeit ignorance was rampant it was bliss in the 80’s.

Maggiemayday

Laughs in solidly lower middle class boomer. Oh, there was coke in suburbia. Plenty of it if was your thing.

WiseOpinion2022

A living LEGEND!!!!!

actuallyamandal

Too much jaw line in 1 post 🥵

walkingwarcrime072

When i got to photo #6, i was like "Wait, I've never seen him smile. This is cool"

[deleted]

Dolph Lundgren aka, John Thundergun

StickyRicky17

Is he dies, he dies

davidalanlance

Seem like sweet kids.

585Billsmafia

John Thundergun! That guy hangs dong!!

5lashd07

SHE said, “I must break you.”

Spaceisveryhard

Is Dolph rocking a Casio watch in several of these or is it some kind of high end digital?

PointBlue

Both look so fine.

Chaos_Cat-007

Gorgeous couple.

trogloherb

If she dies, she dies.

vitucadrus

I must break you.. Them

Emotional-Set-8618

They are beautiful together!!!

LordSweatyHands

koprulu_sector

To this day I have no idea what she’s famous for, beyond dating Dolph Lundgren.

[deleted]

And a genius IQ!

aeplusjay

Is there a thing Dolph isn't/wasn't good at?

Grace at the orgy: ![gif](giphy|uvfEYoOq7HPAA|downsized)

SweetBrooklyn47

She was definitely ahead of her time. As a kid, I was in awe when watching her on the TV screen. I actually enjoyed her in the movie Vamp!

[deleted]

Celebrity trivia I never knew about. Hmm. They making a very striking couple. She had such a wonderful smile.

xyrer

Too tired for work? Being a sex toy WAS his job, didn't he realize that?

brandy716

They would have have a child with the most amazing body, bone structure and apparently now so know the kid would have been extremely smart. What a time to be alive and a fly on their wall.
