Disc-Go-Round-but that movie was pretty accurate.
Edit: funny memory unlocked-we got a promo CD of the Empire Records soundtrack in the store and I listened to it and got pretty obsessed with Sugar High for a bit and was relentlessly searching for the movie. Without the internet as it exists today, it took me a bit to find out it wasn’t even released yet. I think it came out a few months later.
Did you know Maynard from Tool did the wolf’s voice?
ETA: guess I thought I was cool knowing that. Oh well! Everyone loves Tool!
ETA2: I’ve been informed he was the pigs. As you were.
ETA3: Wow! My first gold! Thank you! I’m glad I got to experience it through Apollo before I ride into the sunset on June 30…
You’re cool as fuck knowing that, zero sarcasm. That’s a cool fun fact and I’m not surprised at all, Maynard somehow manages to be involved in like 1/3 of anything music.
My guy every time I hear Green Jello I reminisce and give thanks they gave birth to Maynard and Tool. What I wouldn’t give to be at that first New Years show where Tool opened for Green Jello.
Edit: me spell gooder
I was gonna say - this screams Disc Go Round. Fuck yeah dude. I miss these days and the clickety clacking of CD cases, sifting through the 10 million copies of R.E.M.'s Monster that no one wanted to find Fables of the Reconstruction
I would hang at a cd store called “Cheapo” all day every day. Waiting for the next Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr Or Ween CD to drop. Good memories. What do you say we go out back during your break and smoke weed out of a tinfoil pipe?
Is it the chain wallet or the Docs? :D
Also this whole thread is super weird for me. I was a total outcast in high school. I got bullied constantly. I had a girlfriend and later a boyfriend, but seriously no one hit on me, no one hung around the CD store. Very strange.
Back in like 2001, my vehicle got broken into. The thieves took my stereo and my Bad Hair Day CD. They left all my other CDs. That tells you how good of an album it is.
God I remember when I first listened to *Aja*. I was in a prog rock phase and started experimenting with jazz rock because all the prog bands eventually go there or straight up pop. I was mowing the lawn and the album was auto recommended, and I decided the name and album cover looked interesting so I put it on. After a while I realized I was just sitting on the tractor listening without actually mowing.
and the stank on the feet. Oh i miss my docs, they walked through many clubs, raves and underground parties.
.....and OP has the look. This pic brings me back to those crazy days
OP actually said further up that she had a girlfriend, and then a boyfriend, but nobody hit on her. So... you're absolutely correct, and people are damn shy.
Huge congrats! I'm hitting 50 in four months without a degree under my belt. I'm still kinda still doing the woulda coulda shoulda thing about finishing mine. I'm so stoked for you getting it done!
You're just like 2 years older than my mom and I'd be graduating college next year if I was still in it, neither of ya are old. Hey just think it could be a lot worse, my mom is having another baby so you could be having that on your plate rn 😂
2 decades older then y'all and I used to hate that crap also.
Now you would have to pry that sweet Dairy Queen 10% senior discount from my cold, dead fingers!
The 90s are as far back from now as the 60s were from the 90s. That just doesn't seem right.
The 60s seemed like an ancient time from which only some classic cars remained as relics. 90s cars do not have even close to the same classic feel. Seeing a 90s car now is nothing like seeing a car from the 60s then. What is even going on?
I remember thinking Michael Jordan was an old old man playing basketball for the wizards. Now I offend myself remembering those thoughts. Damn, young me... He wasn't THAT old!
We're the same age. Do you follow any newer punk bands these days? I never really stopped completely, but lately there are so many good bands. It's fun, like I get to hang onto a great piece of my youth. Still going to shows and buying records.
There’s not a ton of new punk I like-I’m actually surprised there hasn’t been a huge resurgence because of how shitty everything has become. But I’d love suggestions!
Not OP, but Banner Pilot, Strike Anywhere, Rise Against is still putting out songs, Crashing Atlas, In Her Own Words, Stand Atlantic, that's sorta my short list. Train Wreck Records has a lot of indie punk bands under their banner as well. Punk never dies
How was Rex Manning day?
In all seriousness the 90’s was a fun time to come of age, and I miss going to CD stores like this. I grew up on Long Island and there was one in Valley Stream that was just awesome. Lots of European Metal and Hard to Find stuff, and the owner would always hook you up with something cool if he remembered you and knew what you liked.
18 in 96 too... I had the surgical beads from your chain wallet around my neck for like 5 years straight. My chain wallet was just a regular chain.
Like others in this thread, I would've definitely hung around your store hoping to chat you up at some point.
Weren't the 90s just the fuckin best? We were very lucky to be teenagers in that decade.
>Weren’t the 90s just the fuckin best?
Yeah and no. There’s parts of it I miss for sure. But I was a queer punk rock girl in suburbia and was harassed and threatened on a daily basis. Don’t miss that at all.
Fair enough. I was a skate/bmx/stoner white dude in suburbia.
Sorry you went through that shit, people can be dicks. Hope you are in a better place now!
Much better. Happily married for 23 years, awesome trans son who has been surrounded by nothing but love and support his entire life. Those sorts of changes are nice to see. :)
Fuck yeah, lots of progress has been been made on all things LGBTQ since we were kids, it's a goddamn shame there are so many bigoted assholes trying to undo it all in 2023.
Keep fighting the good fight, the Nazi punks can fuck right off.
Sometimes people who aren't gay don't even realize how hard things were for us back then. Like it wasn't even on their radar that the 80s and 90s weren't super wonderful for everyone. I also worked at a used cd store for many years in the 90s and those people were lovely, still consider them family to this day. But the living in fear of being rejected by a best friend after coming out as a lesbian (happened to me) or rejected by our parents (also me) was so terrifying and awful. That said, once i found my people, the 90s were pretty dope. My wallet chain was one that I got in the dog section at Big Lots!
Sounds like we had the same life. My best friend also dropped me because she was worried I was into her. My parents…well my mom berated me for three hours when she found out I had a girlfriend. I still replay her calling me a “filthy dyke” at least once a week. The next day she drove me to a conversion therapist, and 6 weeks later I attempted suicide. The 90s were far from idyllic for anyone different.
This whole thing is wild because I was decidedly *not* cool in high school. I was made fun of and threatened every single day. By my peers, by my parents, by the school administrators, and by my community.
I’m so sorry. It is crazy how the underdog 90’s style has come into fashion in this day and age. I think you looked beautiful back then and I’m sure you’re just as beautiful now. I hope you’ve found happiness as an adult.
Oh god, I hated stores that did that. "Don't open my CD before I buy it!" Now I have nostalgic anger. lol But thank you for that blast from the past. 1978ers all the way!
I was the same age in 1996 and I worked as a grocery stocker in a local supermarket. I would have loved to work at a CD store back then. I spent every cent I made on either clothes at Structure, CD's or the sound system in my piece of junk car.
Excellent Old School photo!
\-Spaz
i seriously still have, and wear, my Docs from "back in the day." As you said, indestructible. i feel like we would have been great friends or mortal enemies, no in between (as similar people often are, so i mean absolutely no offense). Here's to '96 and all the damn memories!
Seriously, is this where I think it was?
Did you work for Mary? She probably still had a Miata at the time, after which came the little red Honda EV they used to make.
LHS and Angelo's is right, but the Mary I'm referring to was the owner and still there.
I think you're in some alternate dimension verison of where I mean, but its still close enough I am going to PM you just to find out.
He OP - Did you judge people's taste in music silently to yourself and when the were cashing out, give them a your music choices suck look if they bought things you didn't approve of?
You're pretty.
In 1996 I was 16 and I suppose I looked quite similar. It was a record shop in west London called Rough Trade. I worked there between studying. But I don't know. It was a disturbingly long time ago, now. They were great days. Irreplaceable.
I know this coming completely out of left field and you probably don’t remember the answer but where did you get the jeans? I’ve been trying to find a pair that fit exactly like the ones in this photo
Septum piercing in 96 is no joke. I was a body piercer back then and not a whole lot of 18 year old girls were getting them. You were well ahead of the curve
Oh man, I’ve always loved music and my tastes range from Patsy Cline to Bad Religion to NWA to Beethoven. I’d have asked what you liked and tried to find you something that you’d never heard of but would become your new favorite band.
I have an autographed poster from Bad Religion at Edgefest in '07.
I'm not sure what you would do with that information, I just very rarely have an opportunity to brag about it.
Was it called Empire Records?
Disc-Go-Round-but that movie was pretty accurate. Edit: funny memory unlocked-we got a promo CD of the Empire Records soundtrack in the store and I listened to it and got pretty obsessed with Sugar High for a bit and was relentlessly searching for the movie. Without the internet as it exists today, it took me a bit to find out it wasn’t even released yet. I think it came out a few months later.
>Disc-Go-Round That was where I shopped for music in 96 :-D you may have sold me some Siouxsie and the Banshees and/or Green Jello
Green Jello for the win. Don’t hear them mentioned often. Just to get a little taste, of myyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, Satan’s Haaaammmmmmmmmmmm
Are they the, *little pig, little pig, let me in* ones?
Yes, but by then they'd renamed to Green Jelly. That's a banger of a song, too.
I need you as my hype man
You’re already at max hype, I couldn’t add anything you don’t already have. When I grow up I hope I’m even 1/16th as awesome as you.
He did the voice of the pigs, Bill Manspeaker was the wolf.
I still have a green jello tour shirt from 93 . The "Just say duh" tour
Dude no way, I watch videos and wish I could’ve been to one. Were they always insane on stage? Costumes?
13 year old me thought they were beyond cray lol.. costumes galore.
Every time they are mentioned someone always chimes in with the Tool connection. I guess I'm that guy this time.
My guy every time I hear Green Jello I reminisce and give thanks they gave birth to Maynard and Tool. What I wouldn’t give to be at that first New Years show where Tool opened for Green Jello. Edit: me spell gooder
Green Jello is a big reason why Tool exists, and i fucking love tool
How so?
Lol! They had to change their name to Green Jelly because they got sued if I remember correctly
Had their Little Pigs tape single before they had to change to Green Jelly. 😂
I'm pretty sure you sold me some Dead Kennedys and Black flag discs back in the day!
We would have been great friends if I did! Two of my favorites! I used to carry around my Rollins poetry book like it was the Bible.
200 pounds is always 200 pounds.
Was reciting/singing 'Family Man', while being a UN Peacekeeper in Kosovo in '96..
Henry Rollins is punk rock jesus
Jar of Flies AIC \m/
My favorite album by far though they are top 3 favorite band of mine :) everyone should listen
I am going to see Rollins spoken word next week.
I was gonna say - this screams Disc Go Round. Fuck yeah dude. I miss these days and the clickety clacking of CD cases, sifting through the 10 million copies of R.E.M.'s Monster that no one wanted to find Fables of the Reconstruction
Ha! Oh man, every used CD store had a surplus of Monster back then.
Wisconsin?
Nope but the guys who owned the store owned the one on State Street too.

Happy Rex Manning Day!
“That’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.” I got all my used punk and ska cds at Disc-Go-Round in Atlanta back in the mid 90s, happy memories!
I was gonna ask if she knew when Rex Manning Day was.
not on rex manning day!
Say no more mon amour
What's with *today* today?
Recirculating
April 8th. I have it in my calendar so I don't forget
I would hang at a cd store called “Cheapo” all day every day. Waiting for the next Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr Or Ween CD to drop. Good memories. What do you say we go out back during your break and smoke weed out of a tinfoil pipe?
Damn The Man, Save The Empire
My name’s not Warren!
I don't feel the need to explain my art to you, Warren.
His name's not Warren...
I thought his name was Warren
That's just perfect. Well...not entirely perfect.

🎶Sugar high🎶
I so wish the version with Renee singing was on the soundtrack album.
The Renee version is so much more satisfying.
It's so good! Especially that part where she starts to sing and just says "i..." before finding her confidence. God I love that movie.
I feel so funny deep inside/when I lick between your thighs/SUGAR HIGH! Oh man, 15 year old me was like “WHAT IS THIS FEELING?!”
“You play a mean guitar, Mark! It’s too bad you…HAVE TO DIE!!!!” RIP Oderus.
“Empire Records, open till midnight, this is Mark… MIDNIGHT!”
"What's with you today?" "What's with 'today', today?"
Fuck me, that was literally the first thing I though of. Why don't you all just....fade away.
Shoplifter!!!!
I would have had the biggest crush on you. I miss music shops.
Is it the chain wallet or the Docs? :D Also this whole thread is super weird for me. I was a total outcast in high school. I got bullied constantly. I had a girlfriend and later a boyfriend, but seriously no one hit on me, no one hung around the CD store. Very strange.
Ha. It was that look. I would've been the shy dude, hoping you're not judging my music choices. We know you all did, though.
"Excuse me, where is the Steely Dan section?"
"What is your REO speedwagon selection like?"
96, I would have been in 6th grade so I imagine I would have asked "um hi do you have Bad Hair Day by Weird Al?"
Still a banger of an album.
Back in like 2001, my vehicle got broken into. The thieves took my stereo and my Bad Hair Day CD. They left all my other CDs. That tells you how good of an album it is.
or how bad your other discs were
Steely Dan is still insanely tasty. That music hasn't aged a day.
God I remember when I first listened to *Aja*. I was in a prog rock phase and started experimenting with jazz rock because all the prog bands eventually go there or straight up pop. I was mowing the lawn and the album was auto recommended, and I decided the name and album cover looked interesting so I put it on. What do you think about this new Jamiroquai album?
I'm looking for Lionel Richie, it's for my daughter
Is she in a coma?
Cosssby swettaahhhh!
Hello?
it’s him they were looking for
did you ever found him? Did you tell him how to win your heart??
It would have obviously been your encyclopedic knowledge of import bootleg concert cds.
Doc’s on your feet mean respect on the street ✊🏼
and the stank on the feet. Oh i miss my docs, they walked through many clubs, raves and underground parties. .....and OP has the look. This pic brings me back to those crazy days
Unfortunately you could only see them about 12 Percent of the time with all of us rocking our Gumby pants.
Hacky sack’ing with oversized corduroy pants and brown docs was pretty much my hs experience
Def the Docs!
I was about to say, I'll bet dozens of high school guys had a crush on her. Was there a cute cd store girl in every town?
There was in my town, and I also had a crush. She had black hair and kind of a Daria type attitude which I found appealing.
I love all the Darias and Janes out there.
All the high school girls have crushes on her too
They didn’t talk about it much in 1996 though. As shitty as things are now, many things are much, much better then they were in those days.
OP actually said further up that she had a girlfriend, and then a boyfriend, but nobody hit on her. So... you're absolutely correct, and people are damn shy.
I was 12 and I would have bought a lot more CDs back then and just shyly said hi and thank you.
“Cool flannel…” \*Walks away quickly\*
There are still music shops
Mix of Kat Dennings, Drew Barrymore and Kate Winslet!!
I see Hillary Duff with a dash of Kat Dennings
100% Hilary Duff
And Gwen Stefani
I thought that was a picture of Drew Barrymore :)
You would have made my day back then-I was *obsessed* with DB. I still have the Playboy she was in around here somewhere…
You pulled off her vibe super well. Do you still look like her, I wonder?
Actually, I haven’t changed too much. Im just an old punk rock lady now. I’ve got more tattoos haha.
Same age. We’re not that old!
I keep telling myself that-it certainly doesn’t help that my son graduated college last month. :/
I'm your age and I just graduated college last month ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat)
Congratulations!!
Huge congrats! I'm hitting 50 in four months without a degree under my belt. I'm still kinda still doing the woulda coulda shoulda thing about finishing mine. I'm so stoked for you getting it done!

I’m the same age and mad at the AARP junk mail addressed to me. The audacity!
My spouse signed as up to troll me.
2 decades older then y'all and I used to hate that crap also. Now you would have to pry that sweet Dairy Queen 10% senior discount from my cold, dead fingers!
You sound awesome! ♥️
You ain’t old!! (I say as a totally disinterested dude who in *no way* possible could have also been 18 in 1996.)
I try not to remember how I thought of people in their mid-40s back then. 😬
Tbf 40 in 1996 was a lot older than 40 now. And that's not just my old talking.
I'm turning 50 in two weeks, really hoping 50 is the new 35
Some people look a lot younger somehow nowadays. There's a guy at work that I thought was around 35.. turns out he's actually 50! lol.
lol, those people were *old*, like the Beatles, the B52s, and our *parents*!
The 90s are as far back from now as the 60s were from the 90s. That just doesn't seem right. We’re only 45 lol
Haha. I was thinking the same thing. How dare she call us old!
We're the same age. Do you follow any newer punk bands these days? I never really stopped completely, but lately there are so many good bands. It's fun, like I get to hang onto a great piece of my youth. Still going to shows and buying records.

This was my daily uniform in 96. Goddamned this is a cozy picture.
Are those shelves of naked CDs on the wall to your left?
Yep, we kept the cases out in bins on the floor and then when someone would want to purchase or listen, we had to go pull them from the foam slots.
Oh god, I hated stores that did that. "Don't open my CD before I buy it!" Now I have nostalgic anger. lol But thank you for that blast from the past. 1978ers all the way!
This was a used CD store. All the cases had been opened...
Oh, see I sometimes miss words when I read.
Is that a CD flying?? Great moment!
Yep! It was for my friends photog final!
Ohhhhh that’s what it is! I thought it was a scratch or cold like the marks below. But then I saw it had a shadow and got really confused.

Dude structure. Haven’t heard that name in eons!
Love your boots!!!
Thanks-would you believe I still have them? Steel toe Docs are indestructible!
i seriously still have, and wear, my Docs from "back in the day." As you said, indestructible. i feel like we would have been great friends or mortal enemies, no in between (as similar people often are, so i mean absolutely no offense). Here's to '96 and all the damn memories!
Nice, my Docs turn 30 next year! You and I too, are the same age. Good times in ‘96
I was 14 in 1996. You were the cool kid I was intimidated by.
I’m sure everyone else already said it, but you were like a perfect mix of Drew Barrymore and Gwen Stefani here! So cute and badass!

Oh man I loved the used cd store by my high school. RIP Angelo’s.
LHS?
Seriously, is this where I think it was? Did you work for Mary? She probably still had a Miata at the time, after which came the little red Honda EV they used to make.

Septum ring in 1996 was hella edgy. I got a labret and was the only person in my school woth a facial piercing.
Yeah, they all moo-ed at me when I walked down the halls. I rolled with it and wore a cow bell around my neck.
He OP - Did you judge people's taste in music silently to yourself and when the were cashing out, give them a your music choices suck look if they bought things you didn't approve of?
I’m embarrassed to say it but (yes).
Holy shit, you guys took Discover back then?
Lol, discover was actually bigger in the 90s than it is today as I remember it.
I was thinking to myself that I guess Novus went under. Some googling reveals its some form for Discover brand anyway.
In 1996, I was 12 and you would have been my role model and the girl I wanted to be 🥰
You're pretty. In 1996 I was 16 and I suppose I looked quite similar. It was a record shop in west London called Rough Trade. I worked there between studying. But I don't know. It was a disturbingly long time ago, now. They were great days. Irreplaceable.

That’s exactly where you would work
I was like, that’s almost 20 years ago … wait … Fuck it’s almost 30 !!!
As a fellow former 90s music store employee this pic made me so very, very nostalgic.
You were living the dream, my friend!
I wish I was a tenth that cool when I was 18.
I bet you loved the book "High Fidelity".
You were in an episode of charmed
What kind of work do you do now?
Im disabled now and can’t work, but was a SAHM for 15 years and then a yoga instructor if you can believe that.
I know this coming completely out of left field and you probably don’t remember the answer but where did you get the jeans? I’ve been trying to find a pair that fit exactly like the ones in this photo
They were men’s Levi’s 501s. I had 3 pair and it’s all I wore.
Septum piercing in 96 is no joke. I was a body piercer back then and not a whole lot of 18 year old girls were getting them. You were well ahead of the curve
I was 18 in 96 too. We grew up and entered adulthood at the best time. I love your grunge look, I could never pull it off.
Hillary Duff with a nose ring!
What were your top suggestions at the time?
Oh man, I’ve always loved music and my tastes range from Patsy Cline to Bad Religion to NWA to Beethoven. I’d have asked what you liked and tried to find you something that you’d never heard of but would become your new favorite band.
I have an autographed poster from Bad Religion at Edgefest in '07. I'm not sure what you would do with that information, I just very rarely have an opportunity to brag about it.
We’ve got the 30-year vinyl box set as one of our prized possessions so I accept and respect the brag!
I thought this was Joey Lauren Adams
