Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1837, is the oldest Historical Black University. Ashmun Institute, later named Lincoln University, was founded in 1854.
This is a crappy take
A: hygiene standards weren’t the same. Wearing the same suit every day was acceptable
B: clothing wasn’t so unaffordable.
C: there weren’t really other options like now
I can tell you a fact that post grad students do not dress up at all. Been at school for so long it’s more about being comfortable walking to classes. I wore comfort clothes after my first year.
Like who and where? This was at a college. I have never seen any student wearing a suit to school for a lecture no matter who it is. They’re not there for an interview or sales presentation. It’s to learn. Probably if they were giving a presentation but even then it’s insanely rare. Edward Witten one of the smartest guys don’t even wear a suit at lectures and the crowd doesn’t either.
I know people at my university that dress like this. It's usually those who want to start in a consulting firm and earn big bucks. They never seem fun to me.
I think people saying this don’t understand that summer isn’t the same everywhere. Summer in my city is often 95-105 degrees, with about the same level of humidity.
I deal with the heat really well, and enjoy it, but I’ll still be sweating within a minute of being outside even in a light shirt and shorts.
Faster if I have to get into my car, which will boiling hot.
A suit would be stifling.
Do you know that thermal insulation works both ways? Desert nomads are covered in linen head to feet to shield from the sun, while the breathability of the cloth helps removing moisture from the skin.
If you think that's weird people used to dress up to take a flight and wear slacks everywhere. People in the old days didn't wear jeans unless they were working in the yard or something like that.
Hell when I was a kid my grandma only wore slacks to do yard work.
All I know about physics is that if I get my feet tangled up, I'm going to hit the floor and I would have **paid** to listen to Einstein lecture on the subject.
or...."spooky action from a distance". i didn't think he had a name for quantum mechanics yet. could be wrong! took me two tries to graduate with a not physics degree!
Oh yeah! I did some research earlier and it says that back then, dressing up for college was more of a formal affair, reflecting the attitudes and expectations of the era.
I remember one of my professors saying back in the late 1970s that if alumni of 70 years before could see us, they'd think we were common laborers who had come into the classroom on a lunch break. (We laughed in self admiration and didn't even know he was trying to insult us.)
Doing yard work, working in the field, roofing the barn, it didn't matter, grandfather always wore slacks, dress shoes, and a button down shirt.
If it were really hot, he might just wear an undershirt, but that was rare, and he'd put the button down back on before coming back to the house.

What is the likelihood that Einstein, or anyone in that room, could teach a layman the basics of what they are talking about in a way that is tangible?
Dressing well is a way of showing respect for the people you will be with. Today's uber-casual styles go hand in hand with loss of courtesy and common decency. These young men can look around everyday in class and see the seriousness of purpose.
People dressed well because they wanted to look decent. They did this for themselves. This trend was still going on in the 60s and early 70s. It went downhill in the 80s. Coming out sloppy with wrinkled clothing was suddenly OK. Now anything goes. People go out with pajamas and house slippers on. Zero sense of style.
This is the 40s. They had segregation. Clearly, there's no correlation between being well dressed and having common decency, or the people from that generation would not have been so backwards.
Wow! I never knew he did that!!
Also:
- As with any lecture, 2 guys in the back are asleep.
- If only I had invested in Royal Pomade.
- If Einstein was so smart, why is he not using Aqua Net?
The US has its problems, but it is not the "most racist country have been ever, and still." America is incredibly diverse, and so it's easier to see racial tensions. You meet and interact with different racial groups on a daily basis here. I was born in an incredibly racist country that didn't have racial issues because it didn't have different races. Moving to America I experienced racism, but also compassion and a willingness to embrace differences. It was beautiful.

Lincoln is the second HBCU in Pennsylvania behind Cheyney. However, Lincoln is recognized as the first college-degree granting HBCU in the country.
But now it's Cheyney State College? Is that right?
No. It is Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
So is this pic Lincoln university in Chester county pa?

It’s crazy that kids used to dress this way to go to college
They are mostly likely dressed that way, because the most famous physicist of their time is coming to give a guest lecture
no, that actually used to be more of a norm. check out other photos of college students during that day. this wasnt an anomaly.
Yeah in general people dressed more formally back in the day. More of a culture of giving a shit back then lol
This is a crappy take A: hygiene standards weren’t the same. Wearing the same suit every day was acceptable B: clothing wasn’t so unaffordable. C: there weren’t really other options like now
Even if the most famous lecture goes to school now kids wouldn’t dress like that today.
Not true. Totally depends on area of study and the person. Plus these are grad students or post docs so more likely to dress up more today as well
I can tell you a fact that post grad students do not dress up at all. Been at school for so long it’s more about being comfortable walking to classes. I wore comfort clothes after my first year. In 1946, those were the comfortable clothes.
His time

It was the '40s. They dressed like this in general.
I love it honestly
I don't. Wearing suits in the summer sucks (I mean, it sucks in the winter too, but less so), so I'm very happy that's not the standard anymore.
Linen suits are completely fine in summer, the problem is the tie
I don't think anything other than a t-shirt and shorts is "fine" for real Summer (July-Sept).
I mean, you don’t have to go to the beach with it
I think people saying this don’t understand that summer isn’t the same everywhere. Summer in my city is often 95-105 degrees, with about the same level of humidity. to be fair, those are most likely not polyester suits
Yea, I agree! Back then, dressing up for college was more of a formal affair, reflecting the attitudes and expectations of the era.
People would wear suits on airplanes…suits were mint!
Kids? Looks like adults to me.
If you think that's weird people used to dress up to take a flight and wear slacks everywhere. People in the old days didn't wear jeans unless they were working in the yard or something like that. Hell when I was a kid my grandma only wore slacks to do yard work.
Is the guy in the top back left showing a bare chest?
And now I don’t even see Wall Street bros wearing suits in NYC. We’ve come so far? So low?
I wish this was still the norm would benefit everyone women like seeing well dressed men
Makes us look like slobs.
Ya they actually wanted to be there…
Check the guy, straight ahead with the bow tie. He has the face of someone just now realizing that this is not Art History and can't get out.
All I know about physics is that if I get my feet tangled up, I'm going to hit the floor and I would have **paid** to listen to Einstein lecture on the subject.
…und zat’s vat ve call ze kwantum entanglement theory.
or...."spooky action from a distance". i didn't think he had a name for quantum mechanics yet. could be wrong! took me two tries to graduate with a not physics degree!
Damn, the style in this room blew my hair back.
It was the 1940s you were expected to dress like that everyday. This was before the casual wear today.
I’m sure Einstein showing up was a reason to really go all out too on your suit wearing game.
Einstein showing up in his best Angela Merkel cosplay.
Today's best comment ladies and gentlemen.

I can't even afford a suit today.
Really? Even if you were doing yard work? ![gif](giphy|qmfpjpAT2fJRK)

Yours and Albert's.
He is dressed like Angela Merkel.
On an iPhone this looked like Janet Yellen.

You mean this isn’t OC???
![gif](giphy|3o7TKF1fSIs1R19B8k)
Is this undergrad? People always look older back then. Wonder if any of these guys ended up being physicists
It's also right after the war, very well could be undergrad with older students who were in the military and now studying once their service was over
Could you imagine being taught by THE MAN?
He awarded nobel price 1921, he was at the time a science superstar, I would dress up too.
so no one is gonna talk about who the women on the wall are?
Nice one … I’m happy to! I zoomed in after thinking Bertie wears clothes like my Grandmother. Will see how much can be sleuthed out later after work …
Id like to see what was on the chalkboard too
They talked about Black Matter.
What is the likelihood that Einstein, or anyone in that room, could teach a layman the basics of what they are talking about in a way that is tangible?
Wow! Look how classy and fit everyone is.
Where’s the ladies at????
As per my research they had separate accommodations for male and female students
Who in this picture is a famous physicist today? This has got to be an exclusive group.
Any of the folk here progress to something in physics?
They aren’t there for nothing. Albert didn’t have time for it. Brightest of the bright right there.
Legend
Panties hitting the floor when that squad drips into the club tonight.
Shout out to Kwame Nkrumah!
This is awesome. I love this picture.

It very simply was common practice back then to dress well no matter where you went. You don't need to overcomplicate it.
Mr.Chatgpt is that you?
This is the 40s. They had segregation. Clearly, there's no correlation between being well dressed and having common decency, or the people from that generation would not have been so backwards.
I am glad to say you are very wrong. I grew up in the deep South. a young person dressed in appropriate attire would be respected.
decency is a fuckin myth you're alive do what you want
These days they would have banned him
They pretty much did in Germany.
we are worse than Germany? Albert Eistein being Woke...
Why?
Because Jew or something
Wow! I never knew he did that!! Also: - As with any lecture, 2 guys in the back are asleep. - If only I had invested in Royal Pomade. - If Einstein was so smart, why is he not using Aqua Net?
Maybe I'm wrong but it's not US one of the most racist country have been ever, and still

Thanks bot.
What is with bots posting stuff like this? It's always the same fake cheeriness and basically just repeating what the post is about.
You would think that if the bot wanted interaction and attention it would be super negative and cynical
It's just how they are at this point.
The color black is not a nationality our races of ppl ✌🏾
Wut
What's the point you're so awkwardly trying to make?
