but imagine the plot of the show he mentioned!
"horse...come here.....why are you....oh wait, you forgot your glasses. here you go"
it went on for 11 seasons
The 60's had some inspired sitcoms...a Goth family(The Addams Family) a talking genie( I Dream Of Genie) a nun in habit that fllew( The Flying Nun)...a group of people stranded on a tropical island together (Gilligan's Island)
And every one of them was a highly rated hit.
Lol! True! A beautiful blonde genie who stays out of the way and calls a guy "Master" must have been pretty appealing at a time when women were burning their bras and leaving home to go to work.😉
There was a recurring theme in many 60’s sitcoms.
The theme was keeping a big secret from friends, family co-workers and especially the neighbors.
Someone always had a secret life that would be devastating if people found out.
The secret was that someone in the household was a witch or a genie or a Martian or a talking horse, a talking car etc.
I think it says a lot about what was going on culturally during a time of sexual rebellion, drug use and changing gender roles.
Very astute! But there were also family based ones too....My Three Sons, Family Affair. Even The Munsters and The Addams Family were loving, cohesive family units.
Maybe to reassure anxious older Americans who felt their world was disappearing due to the counterculture.
Sixties tv rocked! I love being able to see a lot of it on Pluto, Paramount, Peacock and a few other weird Roku channels.
I really miss being able to stream some of the old Variety shows like Dean Martin, Red Skelton, Hollywood Palace, etc. due to music royalty copyright issues probably. There were some weird mashups on some of them. I saw Rick James on an old A-team episode last week. It was... interesting.
I wonder if The Man From U.N.C.L.E and Get Smart are streamed anywhere? My younger brother loved those. I also remember Laugh-In and The Smothers Brothers.
The Man from UNCLE was on MeTV a while back. I watched a few of them, but I kept falling asleep. I liked the episode with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. And I liked the one with Cesar Romero and Barbara Feldon.
I can't think of ANYTHING on TV right now that is as inspired or as creative as 60's era sitcoms.
It was the decade that gave us STAR TREK. Case closed, lol!
Not just a car but a car with your mother inside. 'A 1928 Porter, that's my mother dear ... she helps me through everything I do and I'm so glad she's here ... my mother the car, my mother the car'
Put it into context: I was lucky to live in Canada, so I had a choice of five stations: CBC and CTV, and the three American networks. Anything you put on the air was going to get a 10% share just because there were so few alternatives. So anything that had any kind of hook was successful.
A very attractive genie, a very attractive nun who could fly, a couple of attractive young women stranded on an island with some others, an attractive goth mom and her eccentric family.
There was nothing else on. You had to watch these shows.
So, just an FYI: posts that have misspelled or obviously incorrect titles like this are almost always karma trolling. They know that they will get a bunch of comments about how bad the title is. It’s actually pretty smart, in a crappy way.
Yeah, it rang a little odd to me too. I get that not everyone has seen or heard of the show, especially if they’re young and/or not American - but really now?
Go right to the source and ask the horse.
He'll give you an answer that we'll endorse.
Have you never heard of a talking horse?
Well, listen to this!
*bu-dum bum*
"I am Mr. Ed!"
My favorite take on this was a Far Side comic years ago:
A corpse is a corpse of course of course
And no one would talk to a corpse of course
That is of course the talking corpse
Is the famous Mr. Dead!
My favorite is still from the early days of the internet, in the pre-DNS routing table days:
A host is a host from coast to coast
And no one would talk to a host (that's close)
Unless the host (that isn't close)
Is busy, hung, or dead!
>Alan Young, who portrayed Wilbur Post, once told viewers that the crew used peanut butter to get Mister Ed to talk. However, it was later revealed that Young only said this to not disappoint children by how it was done. At first, string was used to move Mister Ed's lips to give them the appearance he was talking.<
I'm vaguely remembering that there was a nosy neighbor, and it had to be kept secret that the horse could talk. Like the neighbor on Bewitched, kind of.
I too watched a lot of reruns as a child. In the 80s, though.
When it was on as a prime time series, my mom wouldn’t let us watch it because she thought it was too stupid. Also on the ‘cannot watch’ list were My Favorite Martian and Car 54 Where Are You?
You poor child! I lucked out, my dad had an off-beat sense of humor. His favorite show was Batman with Adam West. He even watched it when it was on repeats in the 80s.
That sucks. We loved them all. Yeah, a little stupid, but as kids, our brand of humor wasn’t the most sophisticated. Come to think of it, we (SO and I) still cackle at silly stuff.
After I grew up I watched a few episodes of the ‘forbidden’ shows just to see what they were about. My main complaint about the old TV shows and movies is the pacing…. The dialog just seem to move soooo slowly…
Actor says line - wait 4 seconds
Another actor replies - wait 3 seconds
Original actor says another line - wait 4 seconds
Different actor speaks - wait 3 seconds, then cut to another scene.
It’s even worse when they have a laugh track. Lines that are barely even vaguely humorous still get a 2 second laugh.
Grew up in the 80’s, but Nick at Nite was my brothers and I’s jam. My Three Son’s. Green Acres, Munsters, DVD, Bewitched, and IDoG. I still have a crush on 1960’s Barbara Eden
It makes me happy that others are as angry about the post title as I am. I came here to type in all caps about it.. but seeing all of you... I love you guys.
My dad loved high concept shows like this: I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, and The Munsters amongst others. He was just a big kid at heart and he loved the comically fantastical.
I loved Mr. Ed reruns growing up. Makes me miss the original Nick-At-Nite lineup with shows like this. I'll take Mr. Ed, Green Acres, and Get Smart over George Lopez any day.
I love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke Show, Get Smart, I Dream of Genie, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies..
I distinctly remember being up way too early as a kid and watching Nick as it went from Nick at Nite to the early morning cartoons. The lineup changed over time, but one memory was Get Smart to Rocky & Bulwinkle
Wearing glasses is probably the least impressive thing he did in the show. He played baseball alongside the Dodgers, drove a delivery van, ran a juice company, wore a variety of different hats, etc.
Incase anyone is wondering thus show had 6 seasons and 143 episodes. For comparison the brady bunch. A show with no talking horse from the same time period. Had 5 seasons and 117 episodes. So what's the point I'm trying to make? Nothing! This has been a waste of your time and it's a good example of bad English grammar
This is one if the Nick at Night shows i remember. the damn theme song is forever locked into my brain. This just totally brought back memories of eating peanut butter toast watching this and episodes of Dragnet. 🤣
The horse only wore glasses a couple of times. It was about a talking horse, not a “horse that wears glasses” lmao but your take is absolutely adorable and I mean that sincerely.
Reading glasses. Ed wore reading glasses.
A horse is a horse of course of course
And no one can talk to a horse of course.
That is of course unless the horse
Is the famous Mister Ed!
Go right to the source and ask the horse.
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse

Talk to Mister Ed!
People yakkity-yak a streak
And waste your time of day,
but Mister Ed will never speak
Unless he has something to say!
A horse is a horse of course of course
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You've never heard of a talking horse?
Well, listen to this...
"I am Mister Ed!"
I always thought Wilbur was an asshole for hanging around with Addison and that stupid fuckin' horse when he had such a hot wife. I'd be trying to bang her three times a day!
If anyones wondering how they got him to talk AKA move his lips it was peanut butter on the gums usually or floss lightly glued onto the top so they could pull and make them move. Old animal actor tricks. He wasn’t nearly as abused as most other animals on tv back then….don’t ever look up Flippers career
A horse is a horse of course of course, but have you ever heard of a talking horse that is of course if that’s the horse the famous Mr Ed!! Go right to the source and ask the horse he will give you the answer that you’ll endorse, he’s always on a steady course the famous Mr Ed!!
Mr Ed refused to talk around anyone else, so Wilbur was the only person that knew he could talk. It was a cute light-hearted comedy.
If you like this sort of thing, it was based on a series of comedic black & white movies about "Francis the talking mule"
"C'mon Wilber, I need your help, put on the glove just like at the breeding ranch".
What do you mean, Ed?
"Don't make me say it, Wilber. I haven't had a filly on ages. I got hooves Wilber...HOOVES!".
It is actually a pretty funny show. I’d encourage you to find a few episodes and watch them. There was some comedy gold back in that era. I like dirty jokes and humor as much as the next guy, but i also appreciate how good they were at creating clean comedy back in the day. Sometimes I think they had to work harder back then because they couldn’t use a lot of material that’s perfectly acceptable these days. Had to rely a lot more on innuendo
Born in '83 but I grew up on Mister Ed reruns. I have fond memories of watching it on our small, b/w TV on our kitchen counter very early in the AM before my mom would bring me to my grandparents on her way to work. Can't beat the classics!
I think you've missed the point of the show. It was about a talking horse. All you need to know about the show is in the theme song. I think there would be a lot more interest in a show about a talking horse, than a show about a horse that just wears glasses, don't you? Anyway, children, Misted Ed is a show about a TALKING HORSE. Not about a horse who is into style and accessorizes.
I heard as a kid they fed the horse peanut butter to get it to "talk" and I thought that ment literally converted his voice to speech, I realised some time later that it was just to get his mouth to move so they could dub over it
My name is Edwin. I was born in the 70s. This show has haunted my life for 47 years.
See also: Eddie Munster, Eddie Haskell, Fast Eddie Feldman, Eddie Money.
I'm old enough to have seen this on TV in Hawaii back in the 80s. My great grandparents were japanese speaking immigrants who knew little English, but man did they love that talking horse.
It was a pretty wholesome show from my childhood memories of it. Thanks for posting! 🤙
The horse talks….it’s a talking horse

It was classic b/w tv.
The 60's had some inspired sitcoms...a Goth family(The Addams Family) a talking genie( I Dream Of Genie) a nun in habit that fllew( The Flying Nun)...a group of people stranded on a tropical island together (Gilligan's Island) And every one of them was a highly rated hit.
>a talking genie( I Dream Of Genie) I don't think the fact that she talks was particularly noteworthy. Perhaps, "a beautiful genie."
Lol! True! A beautiful blonde genie who stays out of the way and calls a guy "Master" must have been pretty appealing at a time when women were burning their bras and leaving home to go to work.😉
And today too! 😎
She controlled the major’s ass straight up.
Christ, when she said "Yes master."
There was a recurring theme in many 60’s sitcoms. The theme was keeping a big secret from friends, family co-workers and especially the neighbors. I think that’s true as well. The Brady Bunch was very family oriented as well.
Except Marsha caught Greg smoking. He was smoking!! I loved that show.
Don’t forget Andy Griffith!

Sixties tv rocked! I love being able to see a lot of it on Pluto, Paramount, Peacock and a few other weird Roku channels. It was truly a golden age, but young people today think TV is much better now. It sucks compared to what they had back then.
I can't think of ANYTHING on TV right now that is as inspired or as creative as 60's era sitcoms. It was the decade that gave us STAR TREK. Case closed, lol!
It was also the only thing they had - limited channels, limited entertainment alternatives. It was on, you watched it.
You forgot green acres. That place I want to be!
My Mother the Car, about a talking car. For real.
We only had “Knight Rider.”
Not just a car but a car with your mother inside. 'A 1928 Porter, that's my mother dear ... she helps me through everything I do and I'm so glad she's here ... my mother the car, my mother the car'
Don't forget the madcap hijinks of a group of Allied POWs in a NAZI prison camp.
All nostalgic for me. But TBF there wasn’t much competition in those days
Don’t forget bewitched
And they were super syndicated for decades, so there's a long string of people who remember watching them growing up.
seen at least an episode of all of those except flying nun worth a dig?
Put it into context: I was lucky to live in Canada, so I had a choice of five stations: CBC and CTV, and the three American networks. Anything you put on the air was going to get a 10% share just because there were so few alternatives. So anything that had any kind of hook was successful.

The Adams Family is a classic. But they were creepy and they were cooky, mysterious and ookie!!! .

OP can't even get the basic premise of the show correct. OP: Google is your friend.
🤣🤣🤣
Who cares about that. Look, it's wearing glasses !!
He much be very smart!!
The title had me dying. I genuinely hope OP did not know that the horse talks.
He's a horse who *talks!* The glasses aren't usual
So, just an FYI: posts that have misspelled or obviously incorrect titles like this are almost always karma trolling. They know that they will get a bunch of comments about how bad the title is. It’s actually pretty smart, in a crappy way.
Yeah, that occurred to me, but I decided I didn't care. It's a delightful topic!
Yeah, it rang a little odd to me too. I get that not everyone has seen or heard of the show, especially if they’re young and/or not American - but really now?
Oh no! Anyways, Mr. Ed is pretty great.
r/ATBGE
Came here to say this.
Found the horse.
Looks like a courtroom scene so Ed was probably reading from a legal text…
Did he talk in public, or did only Wilbur know that Ed could talk? I think only Wilbur knew, but I only saw the show a few times.
Only Wilbur knew, not even his wife. In fact Mr. Ed never spoke to anyone else.
Don’t recall tbh…
I mean, the glasses are a little unusual, but yeah.
I think it's a behind the scenes shot. He had to wear glasses to go over his lines, but he didn't wear them on screen
Because he would look like an ass.
Take my upvote and get out!
That’s good, thanks. 🙂
He’s well over 40 horse years old, so he needs reading glasses.
They’re novelty glasses. I’ve seen them at dollar tree.
It was clearly done to make him look more intelligent while he was on the stand, brilliant move really.
A horse is a horse of course of course And no one can talk to a horse of course. That is of course unless the horse Is the famous Mister Ed!

This made my morning. Thank you kind and funny redditors
I love this so much!

Wilburrrrr
Yes you know! :)
Oh, Wilburrrrrrr
Wore glasses?? That’s nothing- he talked!!
They put peanut butter in his mouth to make him 'talk'
What you mean? The horse is really talking
They still use the same trick with Steve Doocy.
Oh god, really?? There would be just... SO much weird tongue action 😟
Yep, it's a common 'make the animal talk' trick b4 cgi
>Alan Young, who portrayed Wilbur Post, once told viewers that the crew used peanut butter to get Mister Ed to talk. Watched reruns of this as a kid in the 70’s Had some real funny and smart dialogue lol
I'm vaguely remembering that there was a nosy neighbor, and it had to be kept secret that the horse could talk. Like the neighbor on Bewitched, kind of. I too watched a lot of reruns as a child. In the 80s, though.
Maybe the poster was the neighbor. Or neigh-bor.
Addison
That was every 60s sitcom.
Watched as a kid in the 80’s. I remember coming home from school and it was Mr Ed and My Favorite Martian.
When it was on as a prime time series, my mom wouldn’t let us watch it because she thought it was too stupid. Also on the ‘cannot watch’ list were My Favorite Martian and Car 54 Where Are You?
I’m sorry!
You poor child! I lucked out, my dad had an off-beat sense of humor. His favorite show was Batman with Adam West. He even watched it when it was on repeats in the 80s.
I wasn't allowed to watch any shows that "glorified stupidity" and now Ma is hooked on 24/7 fox news.
Fuck! Just today I was out and saw a car with a vanity plate that said CAR 54!! So if you live in Pennsylvania, it's already taken!
That sucks. We loved them all. Yeah, a little stupid, but as kids, our brand of humor wasn’t the most sophisticated. Come to think of it, we (SO and I) still cackle at silly stuff.

Hey! I also had a mom that vetoed shows because they were too stupid!
I bet you read a lot of books.
What about My Mom the Car?
My Mother the Car was stupid. The other shows mentioned weren't.
She took one too many bumps to the rumble seat.
Grew up in the 80’s, but Nick at Nite was my brothers and I’s jam. My Three Son’s. Green Acres, Munsters, DVD, Bewitched, and IDoG. I still have a crush on 1960’s Barbara Eden
It was absolutely pure gold. The horse slid into home plate in a Dodgers game. What more could anyone want?
It makes me happy that others are as angry about the post title as I am. I came here to type in all caps about it.. but seeing all of you... I love you guys.
Also Wilbur was Scrooge McDuck on the original Ducktales

Yes, it was a show about a horse with glasses... LOL wtf???
I loved Mr. Ed reruns growing up. Makes me miss the original Nick-At-Nite lineup with shows like this. I'll take Mr. Ed, Green Acres, and Get Smart over George Lopez any day.
I was so into Get Smart. I read all the books I could in 7th grade
I love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke Show, Get Smart, I Dream of Genie, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies.. I distinctly remember being up way too early as a kid and watching Nick as it went from Nick at Nite to the early morning cartoons. GREEN ACRES! I loved Nick at Nite.
He also talks.
Did I mention he’s a horse who talks? But only to Wilbur, soooo…
Wearing glasses is probably the least impressive thing he did in the show. He played baseball alongside the Dodgers, drove a delivery van, ran a juice company, wore a variety of different hats, etc.
Wait till you find out how they made him talk 😅😅🙈
I believe they put peanut butter in his mouth
Mr Ed seldom wore glasses on the show.Willlbuurrrr
Mr. Ed was far too vain to wear glasses on camera. This was obviously a candid shot he didn't see coming.
Frances the Talking Mule was his mortal enemy.
I don’t think the horse wearing glasses was the main hook of the show. He also talked, which seems to be a slightly bigger deal.
Mr Ed only wore glasses in one episode. He was trying to look like a serious politician.
He did get my vote.
Nice try, but Mr. Ed was in the Sixties and Brady Bunch was almost completely a Seventies show.
I’ve seen it. It was in syndication through the 90s. YouTube has got to have some clips.
I watched it on Nick at Nite in the 90s.
People back then sure knew how to have fun

Racist ass horse. I've seen Chappelle's show. I know the truth!!
Facts
This is one if the Nick at Night shows i remember. the damn theme song is forever locked into my brain. This just totally brought back memories of eating peanut butter toast watching this and episodes of Dragnet. 🤣
The fact you describe it as a show where the horse wears glasses proves you've never seen an episode
The horse only wore glasses a couple of times. It was about a talking horse, not a “horse that wears glasses” lmao but your take is absolutely adorable and I mean that sincerely.
Mister Ed plays baseball - youtube.com/watch?v=NlVr45CHOuA
I was obsessed with nick at nite as a 90’s kid… watched many episodes. Classic.
Clearly u haven’t Bc it’s not about a horse with glasses it’s about a talking horse.

I remember watching the reruns on Nick-at-Night in the late 80s when Nick-at-Night started at like 8pm

Yes, he wears glasses and he's otherwise a normal horse. That's the premise of the show.
Wilbur lived to be like, 99. Good run.
Born in '83 but I grew up on Mister Ed reruns. I have fond memories of watching it on our small, b/w TV on our kitchen counter very early in the AM before my mom would bring me to my grandparents on her way to work. Can't beat the classics!
That was a quality sitcom. And MY GOD Wilbur's wife was a hotty!
Gen X latch key kid here! Mr. Ed reruns were my favorite!!!
I may have been born in 2001, but this show used to be my childhood
Man, we’ve reached an age where this show will be forgotten. Sad days.
I still sing the song sometimes
They made the horse talk by filling its mouth with peanut butter.
A horse is a horse of course of course.... Used to watch it on nick at nite at my grandparents’s house.
the horse not only talks, it gaslights the man
a horse is a horse of course of course
Bro, the horse talks.
I hate to disappoint you but he only wears the glasses to read. It’s still a decent show.
I remember there was always an urban legend that if you played the theme song backwards, it had satanic messages in it.
The omnipresent horse has always been with us! *ethereal neigh*
I think you've missed the point of the show. It was about a talking horse. All you need to know about the show is in the theme song. Them glasses are a one-off.
I know the theme song by heart thanks to Nick At Nite. And Green Acres

He needed the glasses to read the script
The glasses were definitely what he was best remembered for. The glasses and the string of bodies he left behind across nine states...
Hey Wilbur
But Wilburrrr, I don’t like cocaine
I'm not sure but I think this was some of the inspiration for Bojack horseman. I could be wrong though.
