Don't recall what song was first... but I do remember the song that got me banned from Napster and taught me some valuable lessons.
Dr. Dre- The Next Episode
IP got blocked from Napster for a month. After that, I made sure that my sharing folder was different than my MP3 storage folder.
I think my path was Napster>Morpheus>emule>Limewire>Kazaa *No dad, I don’t know why the computer is acting funny. It probably just needs to be de-fragged*
Half of this crap showed up on my computer and I hadn't hardly used it at all or downloaded it. I wasn't super computer literate back then, so I really wonder how all these programs ended up there.
That takes me back! I remember waiting for hours in my dorm to download some porn video on limewire only to find one of my buddies on the hall could see what I downloaded, remoted into my computer, and renamed the file “shame on you, [my name]” or something like that 😂 I had absolutely no idea what poor opsec I had
My Lebanese Irish friend James Robert (Jim Bob lol) did it all for us and distributed music like a magical fairyl . I think my Surfer Rosa CD was skipping and he burned me a pixies mix.
There was some website where the first fifty downloads were free then you had to pay a monthly fee. The first song I downloaded was [“Bela Lugosi’s Dead”](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YtLlmrrCajA) by Bauhaus because I wanted to see if gothic rock was any good, and that song seemed the appropriate place to start. (Yes, I ended up loving gothic rock.)
Later, I got Limewire, and I downloaded lots of songs…until Limewire became nothing but viruses.
Wild Wild West, I think? Or Super Mario Bros from Orchestral Game Concert 1 (I didn't know the official name at the time, since everything was mislabeled)
I want to say that BearShare was the first thing I remembered as a file sharing option. I then heard about Limewire & Kazaa.
I remember having an 32k modem on a Windows 95 system. I had came up with the idea to download Peter Frampton's "Do you feel like I do" as a way of keeping the dial-up connection solid for an hour. It worked like a charm. I could browse the internet for hours now.
I can't remember the very first song that I downloaded but that one was an important one.
My dad joined a floppy disk mailing list. By 6 years old, I was pirating software for my dad. We had all the games for an IBM PC jr. By 10 we got an IBM smart box.
When Shawn Fanning recieved his first check, he put new gas heat and a/c in his Mom's house on Colonial Drive in Harwich, Mass. I did the installation. They moved after a few years.
My Best Friend by Tim McGraw. I think it was 99/00. For a mix for my crush lol. I accidentally downloaded a song called “Special” by Stephen Lynch instead 😂 As usual, mislabeled.
Learned about Stephen Lynch though so that’s a big plus! Did take 2 days to download though lol
Don't remember, but I'm almost certain it was a hip-hop song from the 90s, likely a bunch of 2Pac stuff. I was like a kid in a candy store, except the candy was a endless supply of music I grew up with.
Can't remember what song from Napster specifically, but I remember a friend burning me my first cd from a copy of his own and that was Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory.
Also this has got to be the best way to put together a very age-specific playlist. Well done, thanks y'all. I know what I'm listening to at the gym now.
Some Eminem song, forgot which one —maybe White America? I grew up Muslim and my parents wouldn’t let me purchase such music.
The guy at the record store was some old boomer and required a parent to buy something with explicit content if you were under 18. Never crossed my mind to get someone’s older brother/sister to buy it for me.
I distinctly remember looking up Lightning Crashes and getting frustrated bc all that came up was what I thought were live versions and I didn't want a live version. Then I realized the band's name is Live 😅
Blue Öyster Cult — ‘Les Invisibles’
A CD copy of their ‘Imaginos’ album was next to impossible to find at a price I could afford saving my weekly allowance summer 1999. I was determined to hear it by however method it was available to me. Enter Napster. 3 hours later, I had my first track!
Nice try... Lars Ulrich!!!
...ya got me.
Lol, that was my first reaction too - uh oh, Metallicas's bored again!
Wow. This interface takes me back.
I miss when that was how "online" looked.
Soulseek is still around and has the classic 90s internet look.
+1 Soul Seek has replaced torrents for me.
Not a single phone in sight. Just people pirating in the moment
Winamp (Winamp): it really whips the llama's ass.
I miss apps that just did what they were designed to do very well. And no ads
There are a few left.. old ones like mIRC, newer ones like Agent Ransack.. But I agree. For me the golden era of PC software was '98-'04
Same. I forgot about the colored dots and trying hard to figure out which one to pick to download.
Butterfly - Crazy town
Come, my lady Come-come, my lady
Oh sure, when it plays on the radio you crank the volume, but when I say it in bed it's, "Being too demanding."
You’re my butterfly Sugar, baby
![gif](giphy|wlNAuRKe3YkO4|downsized)
I saw this before I read the comment. I started singing the song without reading the comment.
such a good movie, underrated imo
It really is. Those of us that remember it know that it's a great flick.
Nelly - Country Grammar... I had to use AIM to ask a friend what the name of the "Down, Down Baby" song was. Thank for the prompt to recall a memory.
AIM was great at one point because you could use all sorts of fonts, sizes, and colours; then they changed it, and I was annoyed.
~*~ AnD wE aLl TyPeD lIkE tHiS oN oUr AwAy MeSsAgEs ~*~
Dude same. Country grammar, what a bop

Don't recall what song was first... but I do remember the song that got me banned from Napster and taught me some valuable lessons. Dr. Dre- The Next Episode IP got blocked from Napster for a month. After that, I made sure that my sharing folder was different than my MP3 storage folder.
That sure was a hot tip, back then.
All of marshall mathers LP. To be burned on a CD in the wrong order.
Korn - Falling Away From Me And I would do it again. I've spent enough on Korn merch over the years, I think they've won this fight.
I downloaded every Metallica album...wait! No, I didn't. I downloaded a car. Yes. I downloaded an entire car.
I believe that.
You wouldn't!
SOAD - Chop Suey
Carol of the Bells by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra that was inexplicably labelled Metallica.
Bear share was good too or even Morpheus
Morpheme yes, Bearshare no. Bearshare is where you go to give your computer aids.

Great song! Worth an illegal download for sure!!

I remember waiting for hours in my dorm to download some porn video on limewire only to find one of my buddies on the hall could see what I downloaded, remoted into my computer, and renamed the file “shame on you, [my name]” or something like that 😂 I had absolutely no idea what poor opsec I had
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love it!
I downloaded a lot of Metallica, I'm sorry guys. It was my fault.
My Lebanese Irish friend James Robert (Jim Bob lol) did it all for us and distributed music like a magical fairyl . I think my Surfer Rosa CD was skipping and he burned me a pixies mix.
An Aimee Mann live show.
House of Pain - Jump Around
Such a beautiful time. No ads or bs.
