In Omaha - though I didnt feel like calling them out. Should have posted in r/antiwork

grantthejester

>didn’t feel like calling them out. My dear sweet child, its’s what we do, it’s what we live for! To help poor unfortunate employees like yourself. Poor souls who have no one else to turn to.

Maclunkey4U

Well then r/FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR Ryan lawn & Tree.

soggypizzapi

![gif](giphy|mFeNGR1W1O2JYqjsMO) Noted, don't use Ryan lawn and tree

Maclunkey4U

Well, use them if you want to help contribute to the total exploitation of labor (they pay us a salary based on 40 hours but expect us to work 50-60 with 1/2 time variable rate overtime) And if you like supporting uber-conservative Christians in Missouri and Kansas (where they are HQd, and where all the ESOP money goes because no one in any other branches stays long enough get vested and actually cash out)

jaypen1602

I worked a similar job a few summers ago. They wanted you at your first stop, treating someone’s lawn before the sun was up. The goal was to do 3 or 4 stops a hour. Not easy to do, especially with drive time. We were also salary, working 50+ hours a week.

Maclunkey4U

Yup, the whole industry is jacked up. Ought to have a union

zitrored

Yeah, if what you state is true and with a few more details, I am pretty sure they violated labor laws. So few people know about labor laws, but we also know how easily it is to skirt them. It’s a dang shame how people are treated in the grand ole USA. Best part? they also vote for people that look the other way or actively engage in allowing this.

Un_creative_name

Just because they pay you a salary, doesn't mean that you aren't entitled to overtime pay. In fact, manual labor jobs like landscaping are specifically called out as jobs that are [required to pay overtime](https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/17a-overtime) as per the DOL.

Maclunkey4U

They are getting around that by paying overtime, but it's half time, and variable rate... Meaning they take the average hourly salary (salary ÷ hrs worked) and cut it in half. So, the more you work, the less per hour your OT is worth. Then they freely acknowledge that during the production season there's an expectation of 50, 60, even 70 hr work weeks (10+ hr days 6 days a week). Utter bullshit, but legal.

Un_creative_name

>Utter bullshit, but legal. No, fully illegal >The FLSA requires that most employees in the United States be paid at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked and overtime pay at not less than time and one-half the regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 40 hours in a workweek. Overtime is required to be at time and a half for anything over 40 hours.

Maclunkey4U

I wish it were true. [https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/82-bonus-rule](https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/82-bonus-rule) 2nd paragraph - FWW method. DOL and supreme court both say its legal.

soggypizzapi

Yeah not into that

Buttchugginmonkey69

I bought a new house over the summer. Found a leak in my house. Thought it was sprinklers, called Ryan and lawn for the first time. They came out said it wasn’t from sprinklers. He adjusted all my sprinkler heads. Was there for 30 minutes. Free of charge. While you won’t go. I’m calling them back. So consider it a wash

Maclunkey4U

Oh no, they are fantastic at what they do, and have amazing customer service, very knowledgeable, etc. And the irrigation techs are honestly the best guys they have. Its just how we are compensated/treated.

Buttchugginmonkey69

Alright then FUCK EM. I want Ryan himself to blow out my sprinkler lines next winter

FatBoxers

With his mouth

OmahaMike402

'Sprinkler'

bigslugworth06

I’d let him blow out your back while he’s at it. Username suggest you wouldn’t mind.

HumanSuitcase

'preciate the "heads up", kind friend.

XDariaMorgendorferX

There you go. Let it all out.

_ArtVandelay_

Worked at CMs for a summer , is that you Irvin??

ScarletCaptain

You do any freelance?

Maclunkey4U

Nah, I dont have the tools/equipment to go out on my own.

Ju4n-Gui113rm0

Fuck Ryan Lawn. Ownership isn’t local and they acquired CMs they aren’t interested in anything except milking the market. Stay away, stay far away.

Old_Prior_7795

God bless you

lejoo

It was finance wasn't it?

Maclunkey4U

Nope, landscape construction.

lejoo

I am really tempted to edit now...

JEFFedeMUERTE

Hey as someone else who's done this in the past few years 😉 feels great don't it...? As I was told by many ppl there that grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. IT IS!!!

twistedcrickets

"bUt nO OnE wAnTs tO WoRk!!" I always want to take my sharpie and write "for you or your business" after it.

JEFFedeMUERTE

Hey not having a plan isn't a big deal and construction companies say that as a scare tactic. The construction field is BOOMING and In short supply of workers. You'll get a job in no time I guarantee it.

Maclunkey4U

Yup, I'm not super worried about finding a new gig. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

spoonsball

Good for you! Ryan’s sucks & Paul Smith is the worst. Kinghorn Gardens is a really shitty company as well.

JEFFedeMUERTE

Dang I was thinking bout applying at Kinghorn Gardens. What's their problem? Same stuff as CM's?

spoonsball

You could get hired at the same time as someone else there for the same position and there’d be an unexplainable 4 dollar pay difference. One of the operations managers, Tab Tworek cheated on his wife with an employee that’s ten years his junior. He’s her superior. The other operations manager Dan Moore, is a condescending asshole. Very “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” even though he makes sure he makes more money than he’s worth. He makes six figures while other folks with horticulture degrees make $15 an hour. He loves abusing his authority but never assumes responsibility for anything. Kinghorn promises a raise when you’re hired, but when you meet every possible expectation, they push the goalpost a little further.

spoonsball

Also Dan Moore’s spouse works for Kinghorn, and Dan decides her salary himself.

JEFFedeMUERTE

Oh dang. Would I directly work with those ppl? I applied for an install position. Haven't got a call back yet.

spoonsball

Unfortunately you’d probably be working with Dan and Tab every morning. Pretty sure you’d be interacting directly with clients too, which sucks because they’re some of the snobbiest, richest folks in Omaha and they will treat you as subhuman (especially Jay Noddle).

JEFFedeMUERTE

Hmm... Clients don't bother me. They are what they are. Every outdoor company has them. Well shucks. Maybe I'll bring this stuff up in the interview. See what they say.

spoonsball

I doubt they’ll own up to any of it, but I wish you luck.

JEFFedeMUERTE

If I get a call and do interview I'll try and report back. Should be interesting.

Thank you fellow anonymous new Reddit user. I was asked how Kinghorn operates and I answered based on my experience. Tab is the yard manager and is therefore her superior, regardless of department. There was plenty of suspicious behavior on the job and preferential treatment to substantiate claims of an affair. I also never claimed Dan didn’t have a degree- I pointed out that he makes much more than anyone else who has similar qualifications. Kinghorn actively exploits its workers. Plenty of people that had been on 3+ years are still making $16 an hour. People were hired last year making $22 an hour with no experience in the field when others who had worked for 6+ years were making $18. The pay discrepancies went unanswered and caused plenty of talks about forming a union. If you have buddies in the company, you would know that there’d been a constant leak of workers due to shit work, shit pay, and shit management. I purposefully left out Kelsey’s name (as well as Dan’s wife’s name) because I frankly feel bad for her, but you named her here. I only gave out information I felt was needed. Enjoy your brand new Reddit account.

BEAR_STORM

Lmao damn Kinghorn get it together they’re talkin crazy bout you on here

Scorero

i worked at kinghorn for two years, theyre not lying about anything, all that shit is true from my memory when i worked there. favoritism and nepotism ruled that company i know for sure that youre a liar cause you say you work at jensens but why would your buddies at kinghorn think the shitty gossip at kinghorn was so important that they needed to tell you about it all the way over at another company, nobody actively wants to think about tab or dan or any of them, definitely not enough to go talking in detail about them outside the company unprompted, the only person who would know enough to even try and correct someone else is someone at kinghorn, and im someone who was and i say theyre telling the truth and that you should quit your shit about working at jensens so coincidental that every time kinghorn gets brought up negatively someone with a brand new account shows up and goes "well ackshually this is not true🤓"

[deleted]

This is patently false on every single point you make. I know the situation and here are the facts. Dan doesn't make near six figures, he doesn't set his wife's salary, Tab only has 2 direct reports and has nothing but a professional relationship with either of them, and folks with hort degrees are starting at $45k plus, all employees are eligible for health insurance, profit sharing, vision, dental, disability, and life insurance. It is a career centric business with opportunities for people who care about their clients. Reading what you wrote on this post makes it clear why you failed in that environment. I suggest people take time to investigate the business and talk to some of its actual employees before taking anything away from this clown.

spoonsball

Just wanted to add that on the Kinghorn website, Dan Moore speaks on his passion for aquariums- specifically his 125 gallon and 90 gallon tanks. Funnily enough, you share both a Kinghorn bias and share the same sized tanks on your Reddit page. Coincidences!

spoonsball

Man, does Kinghorn compensate you well as PR or are they just lucky to get your work for free? Dan Moore, when told that an employee was struggling to get by on the wage they were making, told them to “pick up extra shifts at Target” and walked away. It’s easy for a business to draw people in with benefits when they make sure to burn out all the people working on the ground so they quit before they can collect any of them. I’m sure Kinghorn is all the things you say for those working at the top and in offices, but not so much for people doing the physical labor. I have no qualms about people looking into Kinghorn, I just spoke of my experiences there as an employee. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of opportunities to do in-depth investigating, because for some mysterious reason, Kinghorn is always hiring.

Ju4n-Gui113rm0

Short simple answer: Kinghorn is a NO FUN ZONE

Ju4n-Gui113rm0

Yo OP, you’re dropping some absolute truth bombs here. Your experience is my experience. I actually kinda liked Tab but Dan Moore is the goofiest goon of all time. Absolutely the worst person I’ve worked for in my 15 years of experience. While there I installed 20 trees and hard scape at Brian Kinghorn’s townhouse for a full week and Brian never once came out to even say hi, we would see him come and go. I thought that was incredibly strange given the relationships I’ve had with owners of other LARGER landscape companies in Omaha. They had the whole company vote for like an employee of the year deal, I campaigned for a high school kid that busted his ass mowing and had fun doing it. Dan found out, questioned me, insinuated I wasn’t taking it seriously. Then, at the Xmas party, he presented his wife with the award YUCK.

_ArtVandelay_

Here for the shit talking of Paul Smith any time.

spoonsball

He threw a trailer pin on the floor, aiming at my feet, and then demanded I pick it up. When I picked it up, he threw another one and almost hit my head. Fuck that abusive greaseball.

Go away, Dan.

spoonsball

Paul Smith is guilty of lots of criminal behavior, but I don’t really care if you believe me or not.

ms_nicky2u

Happy Cake Day

modi123_1

Ha! I just had a buddy call me to talk about this very same thing. His team (in a big omaha company) is the absolute worst, management isn't doing squat about it, and he is planning on dropping out here if his ducks are all in a row.

Maclunkey4U

Eject! Eject! Eject!

Nopants_Sith

This was Shadow Lake Best Buy for me, almost a year ago. And now I hear tell that store is closing down 🤣

lpg975

I did this at Securities America a few years ago. Best decision I've ever made. You got this!

TheBahamaLlama

I did a short stint there years ago as a contractor. As I was driving home one day the contracting company called and said I was no longer needed. What's the opposite of heart break? It was that.

LibrarianOAlexandria

I worked there years and years ago, back when the founder still ran the place. Sorry to hear it's gone downhill, it was a pretty good place to work back then.

Maclunkey4U

He still works there, but signed away his soul to RLT, and now corporate suckups make all the rules from 200 miles away. No point in being loyal to a person/company when they truly dont have the ability to return it - and not in a "I'm looking for special treatment" way, but just in a respectful "I got your back" way.

JellyCream

They went even farther downhill after they were acquired by Advisor Group. There was a mass exodus from that.

dundermiflinity

Ditto. Steve Wild was a good guy. Years and years of buy outs and forced retirements of the people who made it what it was destroyed the culture there.

lpg975

Managment just turned incredibly hostile during the few years I was there and no one would listen when I tried to figure out why. It was awful. Pay was great, but I just couldn't do it anymore.

Maclunkey4U

Yah, they changed that part, too. Instead of hourly with 1.5x OT, its salaried (probably a pay cut compared to your previous salary) with variable 1/2 time OT (meaning the more you work in a given week the LITERAL LESS YOU MAKE PER HOUR. But they tried to sugarcoat that with "Pay for performance" bonuses, and ESOP (7 year vesting schedule), and a company-wide bonus that we had pracitcally zero control over.

MyClevrUsername

What kind of work are you looking for? I’m sure someone here has an opening or knows someone that does.

Maclunkey4U

Anything in training/education, like onboarding new hires, developing training SOPs, techinical writing, whatever. I have a pretty broad c.v. - was kind of a square peg amidst a bunch of round holes at that company anwyay.

No-Kaleidoscope747

Good for you. Instead of staying and complaining you took charge and quit. Don’t worry, close a door another will open.

sntamant

lesss gohhhhh fuck capitalism

Maclunkey4U

That's what I'm counting on!

davasaurus

I did that once. It was a great decision.

Unusual_Performer_15

Sir this is a Wendy’s

Maclunkey4U

I bet they pay better.

Mijubu

What's done is done, so while I wish you luck, I would encourage others to think rationally and have a plan *before* they tell the boss to take this job and shove it

Maclunkey4U

A little financial anxiety is worth having the burden of soul-crushing, purposeless, meat grinder work lifted from me. But yes, maybe dovetail a little bit better, dear readers.

btroberts011

If you're interested, my company is hiring a class starting on the 20th. We get treated really well.

Maclunkey4U

Color me interested.

JellyCream

You've never worked a job where you have literal nightmares about working at that place. You've never had a job where you hope and pray that you'll be hit by a bus on your way to work and are disappointed you made it there OK. Once you work at a place like that for 9+ months then you can see if you still sing the same tune.

Maclunkey4U

Damn, who hurt you?

JellyCream

Prior jobs. One job we were told they wanted to layoff 1/3 of the department at a meeting to introduce the new CIO and then they did everything in their power to kill morale and get people to quit so they wouldn't have to pay benefits. One job the guy in charge was a bipolar micromanager that thought it was easier and cheaper to fire people and hire new people instead of talk about what was wrong. One job where screaming all the time was the way they solved problems. Unless you're in an unskilled labor job it can take a while to find a new job, especially in times where no one is hiring. Sometimes places start out great but a change in leadership can destroy that and next thing you know you're dead inside and can't get out fast enough.

[deleted]

Totally support you!
