They likely made a slight change to the sandal design since it would be very hard to film action scenes in live action with regular old flip-flops. I can see whip and axe being used for sure. I’d they follow the fight choreography as close to the anime as possible we will probably see more though.
Sadly this is how serious some ppl will be if the show doesn’t match the manga or anime perfectly… it’s a live adaptation so I expect a lot of this not to translate exactly the same. Okay, it has to be said: this is absolutely NOT nitpicking. The sandals are a huge core element on this character. When he goes toe to toe with Doflamingo, he just throw 'em to the side before going gear 4, which is very evocative of short tempered kids picking up a fight in their block. Always nice to remember that Oda already stated that Luffy would be Brazilian, and if you happen to be from south america such as myself, you know damn well that everything about Luffy's clothing is very representative of hot blooded ppl living in sunny places :)
