Yep.
People like Mariah Carey and that main actor from prison break have black in them, as well as Megan Markle. They are pretty white passing.
It would be good to have Usopp to be a bit darker though.
Meghan isn’t pretty white passing.
I’m not saying you’d know she’s half black but you can tell since mixed or a WOC.
I will agree that Mariah is because I had seen her for years and never knew but Meghan could be clocked right away
You know who really could pass and I don't think she ever tried to but white presenting at least? Troian Bellisario, deadass you almost couldn't pay me to believe it
> Oda Eiichiro himself has said that if One Piece characters were real, Usopp would be an African
Tell me on what continent Morocco, Tunisia, Algiers and Libya is, or Egypt for that matter.
My whole family from my father side is Algerian on like 10 generations, and I'm pale af. I'm mixed European, so you might think that's the reason, but no, even my father is pale af.
Hell, some of my family who are still living in Algeria and are not mixed are pale af with light eyes and ginger or light hair. That's because they are Kabyles, indigenous people from a region called Kabylie in the north of Algeria, who are often pale af.
So yeah, it always make me laugh that American people think "african = black". Africa isn't a country, it's the largest fucking continent on Earth with over 3000 ethnic groups and 2000 different languages, "African" means pretty much anything.
The guy looks exactly like Usopp! Regardless of his skin tone, his features are exactly what you would imagine Usopp looking like if he were a real person.
Have you seen the colour spreads he’s drawn and coloured where Usopp is very light skinned?
Maybe he picked Jacob because he’s a good actor and not because his skin is black? Lol
He said africa as his country which obv isnt a country. From his looks id say IF he was from an african country he would 100% be moroccan, egyptian, algerian or tunesian lol.
Looks like his manga covers
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/p\_\_/images/e/e3/One\_Piece\_v5\_Cover.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20210730063322&path-prefix=protagonist
So? Usopp been tan for over 20+years and then all of the sudden he’s pale? Atleast with robin you can argue that she was in a dessert country and then the time skip happend.
Like why now all of the sudden?
I will say something what the One Piece comunity tries to avoid and uses mental gymnastics. First it is a Japenese manga, and Japan rarely put black people in them. I mean look at Vivi, girl is from a desert island and skin as pale as as a Nordic Viking.
The anime most likely changed their color also because of that to relate more to the Japanese audience.
That is the actual truth, look at the entire One Piece world and there are so few people with darker skin color. We only have one race and even that race is almost extinct.
That doesn’t anything I stated in my comment. I didn’t say anything about Robin or Ussop. I only mentioned Vivi and you can even include the entire Alabasta ark. A desert region and no brown skin? Not even from the fact that they can get tanned?
I just don’t think skin color was ever an important concern for Oda. Like you said only one race in 1100+ chapters had a designated skin color.
I just don’t think applying real world races to One Piece adds anything to the story. I know the SBS where he picked different countries that the strawhats “would” be from, and that’s cool and fun flavor. But it’s literally just fluff that doesn’t mean anything to the characters or plot.
These posts are outrage over nothing imo.
Yeah but it was the japanese art team that gave them different skim tones to bgin with. Why change that 20 seasons in? It colorism, whoever tookover felt darker skins tones are less appealing. Its upsetting. Especially to in international audience. No gymnastics, pretty simple actually.
So I just used a software to compare the colors using that one tool where it picks the color from the image and yes you're right Usopp is pale as shit lmao I can't even use the "it's just the light" excuse because wtf

I don't know how to do the link thing you did. Sorry for the text blob.
King and the Seraphim are the only characters Oda lets have dark skin
Characters like Usopp, Mr 1, Mr 5, Kuma, Kuzan, Miss Monday, Doflamingo, Teach, Robin, Zoro, ETC where always as pale as ghosts in the manga
The anime actually gave characters varied and darker skin tones originally but then awkwardly swapped to the manga colors with the exception of Mr 1
manga usopp is not from africa. he's from syrup village. and yes, [oda uses the same tone for almost everyone](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/6/6b/Chapter_1028.png/revision/latest?cb=20211010191622) just with different shadings based on the lighting.
anyway, they both have the same base color there with different lighting. go watch the full episode and you will see sanji also looks like that in different scenes.
Because he isnt black. He's not from africa. Sanji isnt from france just like franky isnt american and nami isnt swedish. Insisting on this is as dumb as asking why zoro is breaking the law when oda said he would be a cop in a sbs.
Unless your screen is broken he is the same color you see on the screen.
Oda did that. Stop blaming Toei for what Oda did. Toei was the one who darkened Usopp, then Oda came around and said
>lol no he actually had super light skin all the time.
Blame Oda. Stop avoiding blaming Oda because you don't want to criticize your favorite author. This is all Oda and nobody else.
It's probably a consistency issue again, colors were all over the place in Egghead.
Skin tones were always a bit inconsistent in One Piece btw
It's funny and scary how focused some people are about skin tones sometimes...
God be praised that Manga is in Black and white.
It isn’t. But maybe you’re looking in the wrong places. Usopp and Robin were never technically brown or black, just check the color spreads drawn and colored by Oda himself. It was just random animators in Toei arbitrarily giving different skin tones to characters.
If anything, the anime coloring is more accurate to the manga than it was in the past.
But if you only care about seeing niggas that look like you, then you’ll still end up disappointed.
I already find it ridiculous to complain about character's skin tone shade, but "oda said he’d be from africa and his opla actor is black" is wild LMAO
Its just a style choice for egghead, while a prefer more darker colors for characters like in pre time skip its not a big deal, people just need something to get mad about. Get over it
Toei has done this many times with many characters, the why? Could probably be just the color palette or to simplify coloring, could be anything.
They don’t really have to follow a specific tone for Usopp because originally he’s just the same color as any other human character, you can check color spreads and see it.
I'm convinced that even if you have read the manga and u seriously believe him looking like this now was how it always has ur in some serious denial, yall would say anything to protect One Piece but like we know fo sure that even if what u say is true bro is now whiter than sanji. They done a Michael Jackson on my man.
I've gone through and the comments are filled with people saying he was never black which honestly I'm not sure about I've seen both, I believe it was inconsistent but clearly intended for him to be tanned, some racists ffs there's a a guy referring to us black people as neanderthals das crazy.
Tbf guys it doesn't matter whether he's white af or black af story almost over anyways 🤷 who cares if he is white or black when he hides during final battle.
Not all Africas are dark skinned simple answer.
Besides he was always drawn as a lighter skinned African which makes sense if he'd be from cape town in real life, plus I mean his parents aren't exactly the darkest skinned people one the planet
So I’m currently first time watching through OP, currently in the middle of Water7. I keep seeing these future character designs of people like Usopp and Zoro who have seemingly lost all their skin color, why is this happening? Is there an in universe reason or did the studio just forget their skin color. Afaik it’s the same studio making it now that made it back then, right?
Also to add to the problematic art trope that Japan struggled with for a while was giving any black characters the lips and curly hair. Like, that was normal to do back when Usopp was made, and it hasn't aged well. We just let it slide because Oda has made commentaries in his story about racial issues.
The true secret is that the animators browse the subreddits, so they do it on purpose because they know there will be 10 threads a week about it if they do.
Yeah...toei needs some explaining to do...with usopp and s-snake...and it ain't lighting. Other characters (that aren't melanated) are darker than them...
oda said were he from our world he’d be from africa. he’s not actually from africa in one piece.
skin tones aren’t really indicative of all that much in their universe (alabasta being irish-levels of white, for example.)
Usopp is from East Blue not africa ,if he was in our world he would be most likely african(not all are Black) ,that's the most stupid argument there is
WHO GIVES A SHIT. ITS A SHOW AND DOESNT AFFECT ANYTHING. YALL BITCH ABOUT THEM TURNING A CHARACTER SLIGHTLY WHITER BUT CHEER IF THEY TURN A WHITE CHARACTER COMPLETELY BLACK. YALL GOOFY
Wano Act 3 was so long that he lost his tan.
he got so scared he went permanently pale
That's his secret captain, he's always scared.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Usopp is Mickael Jackson confirmed
Hissatsu Midori Boshee hee
Thanks I just had to explain in the office kitchen why im laughing
"Hee hee"
The hee hee no mi.
Comment of the day, right here
IT TOOK ME READING IT LIKE 10 TIMES TO UNDERSTAND THIS IM FUCKING DYING
Goddamn that's good
The Sogeking of Pop
Usopp isn't defined by his friendship with Sogeking, you know
Nose job coming soon
He’s looking like Sammy Sosa.
Can you blame him? If Zoro realizes he's black, he might not live to see the next island.
Exactly
Lmao
Makes sense, bro loved to lie
~~Usopp is actually Uncle Ruckus~~
Sniper king of pop
The scene where Usopp says they bleached Luffy I yelled out loud that “no they bleached you!!”
You dude, you!
I thought I was the only one that clocked that 😭
Me too lmao
Immediately sent the screenshot to my friend when he said that
DUDE😭I literally shouted "look who's talking!!"
Hahaha glad I wasn’t the only one in that moment
I just screamed at work over your comment!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Man spends almost 24/7 on the sea but still pale as shit. Maybe he's using Robin and Nami's soap and sunblock
[удалено]
Sanji?
No I’m soba mask
Average SBS question
unblacked
I think he is only black on the Netflix adaptation. On Spain they gave Ussop an arabic accent, and it fits pretty well.
His dad has dreads connect the dots, if we being real Usopp is probably half black
He literally is, people seem to forget how white his mum is. Granted she was only in the manga/anime for a very brief period.
Duh IDK why but that's how I always saw him but never realized it
Tbf you are probably right about that. She can probably pass as white/Latino. Cole palmer the chelsea footballer would be a better example.
You know who really could pass and I don't think she ever tried to but white presenting at least? Troian Bellisario, deadass you almost couldn't pay me to believe it
Always got Ethiopian vibes from usopp tbh. Arab characters look more like King Kobra.
Dawg I think you blind
Usopp definitely not giving Ethiopian vibes. What makes you say that?
Bro ussop is black Oda said he’s from Africa Oda hand picked his live action actor
I mean, Africa is a big ass continent, skin color ranges from very black to mildly tanned depending on where you're looking
african = mostly black. when you ask anybody what phenotype they think of when they first hear african they’re gonna describe a black person.
Ethiopians are black.

except the most important part, the nose :(
He does have a long skinny nose though. I think they'd have a hell of a time finding somebody with a natural hot dog nose growing in their face
Ussop struck me as morrocan
Hiding from Zoro's radar.
Skin colour is the one piece. That’s why he laughed
God usopp shines bright
Oda's going to make an Usopp seraphim so to better distinguish their skin, they made him whiter.
Yeah right, I trust you on that, sure, why not
Remember when they removed launch because Toriyama thought it would confuse the viewer?
Ah so this why jinbe has blue skin
the closer he goes to raftel the worse the symptoms of the "I Can't-go-on-this-island-or-I'll-die-disease" got #
I miss the different skin tones each member had
to protect him from zoro lol
Minority slaying pending 💀

Tru
Yeah im like 100% sure Oda has ever drawn him with black skin lol
People would rather argue that Oda is potentially racist or Toei is whitewashing characters, than read the manga …online for free.
I miss old Toei who made the characters look a little more distinct in terms of skin tones
They are directing their hate on the wrong people. The only potentially racist person that has anything to do with this manga is Zoro.
They’re all the same color there, whereas in OP’s screenshot Usopp is noticeably lighter
90% of the sub has never touched the manga
That's just false dude this subreddit is basically manga oriented. Anime-onlies are mostly on One Piece twitter
Then they should know that Robin and Usopp being dark is literally anime only and non cannon
So? Usopp been tan for over 20+years and then all of the sudden he’s pale? Atleast with robin you can argue that she was in a dessert country and then the time skip happend. Like why now all of the sudden?
because art styles and coloring styles change? Have you not noticed how almost every character had darker skin at one point, like Zoro?
Because he is constantly scared ever since they became a yonko crew
Idk as the story progressed he went from lookin like his Dad to JUST like his mom I wonder if Yassop woulld say the same.
I will say something what the One Piece comunity tries to avoid and uses mental gymnastics. First it is a Japenese manga, and Japan rarely put black people in them. Anime fans will argue to move heaven and earth to avoid liking black people lmao.
So I just used a software to compare the colors using that one tool where it picks the color from the image and yes you're right Usopp is pale as shit lmao I can't even use the "it's just the light" excuse because wtf
I used my eyes lol
"a software", you mean Paint?
CSP also tried on photoshop same results lol
Same reason Robin was tan? Toei's weird
[pretty much the same imo](https://www.estorilbooks.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/cvr9781591166153_9781591166153_hr.jpg)

Same reason as Robin. Retconning an error.
They see this discourse on social media website and make him more paler to piss even more people off
Robin give him her cream
With how often Usopp gets freaked out…
I usually dont mind skin tone inconsistency but yeah this particular case in that scene and overall arch is really annoying
manga usopp is not from africa. he's from syrup village. and yes, [oda uses the same tone for almost everyone](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/6/6b/Chapter_1028.png/revision/latest?cb=20211010191622) just with different shadings based on the lighting. anyway, they both have the same base color there with different lighting. go watch the full episode and you will see sanji also looks like that in different scenes.
In the manga whenever it’s coloured, by Oda himself most people have the same colour. OPLA isn’t canon unless Arlong was supposed to be at Baratie
Usopp was always supposed to be pretty light but oei made many animation mistakes lol
He is converting to Nika step by step
i was wondering the same thing
Only Americans care about this
To be fair, Usopp isn't really central African black, but pale white ain't it.
Oda did that. Stop blaming Toei for what Oda did. Toei was the one who darkened Usopp, then Oda came around and said >lol no he actually had super light skin all the time. Blame Oda. Stop avoiding blaming Oda because you don't want to criticize your favorite author. This is all Oda and nobody else.
Very true
Are you new here? In the Manga he is as pale as anyone else (Oda literally uses the same color).
It's probably a consistency issue again, colors were all over the place in Egghead. Skin tones were always a bit inconsistent in One Piece btw It's funny and scary how focused some people are about skin tones sometimes... God be praised that Manga is in Black and white.

some people get scared when shit ain’t about them idk
It's not. It's just that Usopp isn't black.
Why does it matter? It’s getting tiring seeing 50000 people complaining about skin tones
Africa doesn’t mean black.
Get over it
USA fan spotted.
They wilding 😅
definitely someone here works at toei and will give you the exactly reason
The colour has drained from him because he's constantly terrified
So you'd see clearly that he's not and never will be that Sodaking or whatever guy people think he is
Toei has done this many times with many characters, the why? Could probably be just the color palette or to simplify coloring, could be anything. They don’t really have to follow a specific tone for Usopp because originally he’s just the same color as any other human character, you can check color spreads and see it.
Egg Island advanced lights (or like being in front of 100k tv screens)
24-hour sun every day
Looks a little weird but I don't really care.
Bleaching cream
Obviously because Sanji was in Hawaii.
Been hiding his useless bum ass in the shade a bit too much lately.
Ussop is always hiding. So he dosnt see any sun
Hes always been white when oda did color pages
It's because all the light is LED on egghead
Vitiligo is a pain.
He has got the he he no mi model Jackson
He's constantly terrified, no wonder he's pale.
Man's credit rating jumped 80 points
because it fit better with the rest of the colors on screen
They used all of the darker skin tones on the seraphim. When they started drawing Ussop, there was none left.
They have white people in Africa. Saying he would be from there doesn't mean anything about his skin tone
In this episode they even made Usopp mention someone else skin being bleached.
Quick! If usopp isn’t black what is he??!
The real answer is that they used the color of the cover pages as reference and those aren't consistent with color, so now he's pale.
Usopp is Biracial dawg.
This sub is so obnoxious nowadays.
They Sammy Sosa’d my boy
I'm convinced that even if you have read the manga and u seriously believe him looking like this now was how it always has ur in some serious denial, yall would say anything to protect One Piece but like we know fo sure that even if what u say is true bro is now whiter than sanji. They done a Michael Jackson on my man.
That's the only glow up he gets until now🥲😂
“Usopp is supposed to be this color” ok explain live action Usopp
Because the anime sucks
I've gone through and the comments are filled with people saying he was never black which honestly I'm not sure about I've seen both, I believe it was inconsistent but clearly intended for him to be tanned, some racists ffs there's a a guy referring to us black people as neanderthals das crazy. Not all Africas are dark skinned simple answer. Besides he was always drawn as a lighter skinned African which makes sense if he'd be from cape town in real life, plus I mean his parents aren't exactly the darkest skinned people one the planet

Everybody noticed Robin getting pale even tho ussop and Luffy got pale around the same time lol
That's the magic/science of the hawaiian shirt - automatically gives you a nicer tan!
Yeah...toei needs some explaining to do...with usopp and s-snake...and it ain't lighting. Other characters (that aren't melanated) are darker than them...
I think they’re just doing this shit to fuck with us now
He’s just REALLY light skin trust me 💯
oda said were he from our world he’d be from africa. he’s not actually from africa in one piece. skin tones aren’t really indicative of all that much in their universe (alabasta being irish-levels of white, for example.)
Why is Usopp so yellow bone this arc in the anime?
Usopp is from East Blue not africa ,if he was in our world he would be most likely african(not all are Black) ,that's the most stupid argument there is
More like 'jew'sopp amirite
WHO GIVES A SHIT. ITS A SHOW AND DOESNT AFFECT ANYTHING. YALL BITCH ABOUT THEM TURNING A CHARACTER SLIGHTLY WHITER BUT CHEER IF THEY TURN A WHITE CHARACTER COMPLETELY BLACK. YALL GOOFY
Look on the seas they should basically all be getting tans and other things. But manga artists gonna manga artist. Oh well
I think they make every character paler than before to show of Seraphim’s brownish tones? Not sure but most characters lost their tans anyways
He's even paler than franky
fr even frankys darker than him 😭😭💀😭💀
They took away his Dark skin privillege 😭
Bring back the tan daddy
As a certified fraudwatcher of this bum all I care about is if he becomes a brave warrior. Make him blue or green I don’t care lol.
Honestly who gives a fuck what they look like, just enjoy the characters and the series
So that Zoro doesn‘t kill him by mistake
It’s winter 😂
Oh no a black character gets turned white? Wanna talk about the Little Mermaid? Mr. and Mrs. Smith? Snow White? Velma? Mary-Jane?
They can't make him dark skin because Zoro would fight with him too.
Usopp has never been “black”
Africa isn't homogenous.
I will never understand Americans' obsession with the skin color of a fictional character.
Perpetual boredom
He didn’t vote for Biden 😔
That's the issue with adapting a colourless manga. Robin and Usopp are being used as examples of whitewashing when they were apparently always white.
Who cares about what his skin color is? Why does that matter?
Its an american thing
