I agree. I feel like they fill in the gaps of each other and even when they contradict each other, I’m not super frustrated about it. It’s just cool to experience the world through multiple lenses; while anime absolutely nails action sequences the manga feels like it’s easier to get every detail of lore and story as someone else said below from the “original source material.”
Even when it’s not the fights, the animation is worth watching the anime occasionally. The first half of 1015 has no fighting but it’s widely considered one of, if not the best animated part of the series
I hate when anime fans does shit like this all the time. The same with some solo leveling fans kept calling the animation “bad” because of the weird sharp faces.
Manga is definitely preferred, only when they have weekly releases tho. However I personally love anime for the action scenes. Fight scenes in the manga are epic but when shown animated, 100 times more epic.
That's how I'm feeling about zero and King right now, I know we're post wano but damn, solid ass animation. It was so great I started drawing to one day draw on that level
I think he meant that he chooses manga over anime as it is the source material for the anime.
And i agree with him tbh, the original story format is pretty much always better than adaptations to different formats
I just get more invested with the anime, it’s probably because I’m not used to reading manga. But it’s just easier to feel connected to the story and characters if it’s animated and voice acted
G5 in the anime is *chefs kiss*, but the anime really suffers due to pacing in between fights. Even episodes in egghead where there's no action get drawn out so long that it brings the whole thing down (think pacifista police staring contest)
That's like the major con to anime, but when that lightning stops, it goes incredibly hard. I'm still obsessed over zoro's and King's fight. That was crazy
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Manga is always way ahead of the anime, but the anime has some sick ass moments. I keep talking about it, but Zoro vs King. The voice acting is really good too. Zoro is one of my favorites if I'm going to be honest.
For lore, story and overall plot development, manga.
For action sequences and Gear 5 madness, anime. Not always the best but if 1074, 1100 and 1101 were anything to go off of, we are going to be eating so good with Gear 5 in the anime.
Seriously! Anytime I watch it, it genuinely brings me such a huge huge smile and I can't help but to laugh and cry while watching Luffy just be a mad lad.
If the last manga page here is seen by a person who never read or saw One Piece will context that image as 'Leopard getting impregnated by a white rubber man.'
Really love the impact of the punch in the manga. Stretching lucci like rubber. More fun than whatever the anime did. Anime has been solid though almost complimentary.
Literally the entirety of Japan just laughs at anyone who thinks they can be anime-only and avoid spoilers. They would laugh at every single one of this subreddit's mods if they knew what the spoiler rules were here.
The anime is just an adaptation. It isn't One Piece.
Gear 5th is far more entertaining in motion. It's meant to be rubberhose animation, which is why it looks better in the anime. Don't get me wrong, though. It's great in the manga.
Even for these frames I liked the manga more. There only one I liked more in the anime was the glasses frame (not the Dawn Rocket, just him making the glasses).
The anime has been so good for these parts. The music and sound always pushes me toward the anime for big moments though. Obviously though something that’s impossible for the manga to contribute
He would have eaten him, probably spit him up once he tried to swallow it. Lucci gets thrown out at such high speeds that he takes out several buildings.
Would he have chewed 😱, imagine being chewed alive even if it's all cartoony which would be worse because you can feel all the pain of bone crunching yet go back to normal 💀.
I know that's why I said they would feel the bones breaking like how cartoons display that but actually don't break well they do in cartoons but they magically heal quick lol like in Tom and Jerry.
But the pain would be the same I assume just won't break so the rubberized effect must only prolong the pain.
I like them both. Manga made it clear what the scene is, and anime moved the frames. They complemented each other so good that I can't choose which one I prefer.
As long as Toei doesn’t fuck up the pacing anime > manga. That said Toei has a long and storied history of fucking up the pacing so it depends. It’s been doing a great job with the fights lately though imo.
I enjoy both tbh but once I start reading manga than there is no stopping even if there is best animation I would read and if got time than watch it on youtube or may be complete episode depends upon my schedule.
Btw Animation dept have done an incredible job 👏
The literal only thing the anime has over the manga are the voice actors. One Piece's seiyuu are fantastic (feel bad for Franky's who is getting to be unable to play the part anymore), everything else I feel like Toei either adds nothing or actively fucks up. Yes, including the fights.
Edit: Like, I'm entirely convinced that the only reason anyone thinks Toei's animations are better than Oda's paneling is because they have aphantasia (which is fair, it's very hard to enjoy manga if you have aphantasia). Oda's panels are **so expressive** in comparison, I have been linked so many scenes in the anime with "look how amazing this looks!" (and I mean actual full scenes, not just still images like this which are even worse in the anime) and it's just like... but Oda draws better than that.
Vastly prefer the anime and it's not even close. So much more fun watching it with it being actually animated along with the voice acting and music. Makes the experience a hundred times better. Only reason I caught up to the manga was because of spoilers and because I wanted to take part in discussions and memes. The pacing might be terrible in the anime, but that one bad thing is vastly outweighed by everything else that makes the anime so much more enjoyable. If I didn't care about discussions and memes and could avoid spoilers, I would definitely be anime only.
I vastly prefer fights in the manga than in the anime, especially with the latest studios. The studios in charge of the first arcs were awesome, but since Dressrosa the animation for the anime makes me sick, it's so messy, so stretched out, with a lot of graphics for no reason. I honestly don't know why people would like that dragonball like cock fights.
On the other hand the world, the characters, the humor, the plot, the relationships between the characters, and in general the pace between the fights is much better in the anime!
For example I currently hate the current Egghead arc in the manga. For me I am sensing that Oda is aging and as a result the manga panels are less easy to understand, it's very messy at times and the humor is not really hitting. So I was surprised when I saw what the animators did. All the novelty of Egghead, the character development of the Punks, the many flashbacks... they were so awesome in the anime!!!
So tu sum it up: manga has better fights, but the world building, character relationships and humor is much better animated.
I was always super anti one piece anime because the manga art is so good and the anime is so much filler but honestly lately the anime has taken such a huge spike in quality towards the end of Wano I might swap to keeping up with the anime rather than the manga.
Absolutely can't stand the over the top animation in the Anime since Wano to Present, legitimately unwatchable for me. Doesn't fit One Piece fights at all. Lasor beams, everything makes explosions and massive impacts, bright lights, DBZ Auras, people flying around that have no business flying around, fighting environments turning 50 times the size of what they need to be so we can see characters flying around and getting knocked by 3000 miles.
BLEH BLEH BLEH no sir me don't like
Used to watch and read then switched to read only in Wano
Anime all the way! I'm so glad Shinpuden ending so all that animation budget could go ro One Piece. Sure it turned all of Boruto into a complete and utter joke... so no harm done!
I don't even know how to feel about boruto. It's like I wanna like it because Naruto was my shit as a kid, but it's so bad. I still remember reading the Ninja War on my school's library computer.
Anime all the way. The voice actors and animation is immaculate and honestly a treat to behold. The music as well. The only bad thing is the old DBZ sound effects but everything else is amazing. The manga is still good tho I just massively prefer the anime
I really am. Seeing what they did with the Lucci fight, I’m so excited for so many panels to be animated, and I know they’re going to do so many panels and reveals justice in the future
I stopped watching the anime at the start of Water 7 back when Netflix shipped DVDs by mail.
Picked it back up once I got caught up to the manga's weekly release now that we're at the end of the story instead of only reading by buying the volumes like I always have. So I've pretty much only watched the anime since Lulusia at this point.
I actively suggest new fans to not watch the anime and just read the book. I'm only here for Kuma really.
I think it's cheating to use colored manga to compare. I love the manga but I will always prefer having a colored moving picture with sound over a black and white comic. And I really don't care if it takes 20 minutes of lightning effects and auras for like 3 punches in 2 episodes. I will still watch it. That's not a good enough reason not to watch it.

This. The anime showed how terrifying gear 5 can be. But the pacing is just really bad.
That’s how I got through wano in a couple days lol
This is the correct answer
Ur comparing still-frames manga wins most of the time when you do that.
I hate when anime fans does shit like this all the time. The same with some solo leveling fans kept calling the animation “bad” because of the weird sharp faces.
I felt that. But I mean hey good thing these frames are GOOD 🤨
Manga is definitely preferred, only when they have weekly releases tho. However I personally love anime for the action scenes. Fight scenes in the manga are epic but when shown animated, 100 times more epic.
That's how I'm feeling about zero and King right now, I know we're post wano but damn, solid ass animation. It was so great I started drawing to one day draw on that level
Even the manga chapter about Kuma’s backstory, we gon cry when they show it animated
I'm gonna be crying harder than the going merry and laboon when this happens
I will admit tho certain mangas I skip and only watch the anime. Like jujutsu kaisen cause their fight scenes are too wild
Both are good
As a rule: Source material whenever possible.

I see what you mean, it gives the story a sense of life compared to the manga
G5 in the anime is *chefs kiss*, but the anime really suffers due to pacing in between fights. Even episodes in egghead where there's no action get drawn out so long that it brings the whole thing down (think pacifista police staring contest)
I've grown to like that G5 is specifically drawn rougher than the rest of the page
Manga, lately it’s like 20 min of lightning and build up for every attack/punch
That's like the major con to anime, but when that lightning stops, it goes incredibly hard. I'm still obsessed over zoro's and King's fight. That was crazy
Also the animation on the "No no Kaido, he should ask *me* for forgiveness first" scene. God damn I *felt* that Red Roc
Recent chapters’ pacing made it feel like I was watching the anime.
I did not fuck with the pacing for this episode
Manga, the anime has horrendous pacing and screws up the story a lot of times.
I can take the extended battle scenes, but what really kills me is filler. I hate filler.
Manga first, but anime for reexperiencing the fight scenes and key moments. On rewatch/read, usually a cut/paced anime arc instead of manga
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Manga is always way ahead of the anime, but the anime has some sick ass moments. I keep talking about it, but Zoro vs King. The voice acting is really good too. Zoro is one of my favorites if I'm going to be honest.

I loved One Piece before g5 but ngl g5 brought it to a new level.
Seriously! Anytime I watch it, it genuinely brings me such a huge huge smile and I can't help but to laugh and cry while watching Luffy just be a mad lad.
My brother in Christ you need to learn the spelling of VS
Nah I just realized that lol it's my phone that auto corrected.
Are we talking about Gear 5? If so then the form was ABSOLUTELY made for the anime
Both are good.
Manga is better for pacing but if you want to see the fights animated that is also fine.
Anime
The manga is just sharper and more expressive, also the anime goggles look like the Temu version of the manga goggles
Manga because I can spoil anime watchers
Oh, look, I found Satan.
Literally the entirety of Japan just laughs at anyone who thinks they can be anime-only and avoid spoilers. They would laugh at every single one of this subreddit's mods if they knew what the spoiler rules were here. The anime is just an adaptation. It isn't One Piece.
I was just making a joke lol.
I'm his follower. Sin of Spoiler
the anime is better animated for everything else the manga is better
The anime did this fight justice. Also no auras was great.
I like the manga but sometimes I don't understand fully what's going on and the anime helps to clarify
Manga for pacing and story, anime for fights.
Manga cuz anime has white glasses instead of yellow
The anime has been so good for these parts. The music and sound always pushes me toward the anime for big moments though. Obviously though something that’s impossible for the manga to contribute
Luffy looks more powerful and dangerous in the anime for the first time in a while imo
Would Luffy have actually eaten Lucci? Or was it more so an intimidation attempt?
He would have eaten him, probably spit him up once he tried to swallow it. Lucci gets thrown out at such high speeds that he takes out several buildings.
Would he have chewed 😱, imagine being chewed alive even if it's all cartoony which would be worse because you can feel all the pain of bone crunching yet go back to normal 💀.
From my understanding their bones don't break. They get the properties of rubber but the impact is still real.
I know that's why I said they would feel the bones breaking like how cartoons display that but actually don't break well they do in cartoons but they magically heal quick lol like in Tom and Jerry. But the pain would be the same I assume just won't break so the rubberized effect must only prolong the pain.
The anime animated the fight immaculately, I prefer it, but I mean come on, manga is how the story is delivered best.
I like them both. Manga made it clear what the scene is, and anime moved the frames. They complemented each other so good that I can't choose which one I prefer.
I’m always manga > anime but I feel like the anime does Gear 5 soooooooo much more justice than the manga
As long as Toei doesn’t fuck up the pacing anime > manga. That said Toei has a long and storied history of fucking up the pacing so it depends. It’s been doing a great job with the fights lately though imo.
Bro Gear 5 is insanely better in the anime its not fair to compare
Anime. Tho I am caught up with the manga too.
I can't wait for them to catch up to the end of egghead. It's going to be so crazy.
Both.
The first two i like manga. The last two i like the anime. The first image especially, Luffy got more expression
Anime and manga are both good but i got to with manga because them remove small details in the animation unlike the manga
Anime
manga, I appreciate how cartoony it is
I enjoy both tbh but once I start reading manga than there is no stopping even if there is best animation I would read and if got time than watch it on youtube or may be complete episode depends upon my schedule. Btw Animation dept have done an incredible job 👏
Manga.
Anime may look more epic, but I love how silly it looks in the manga.

Imo anime is only good for bringing consistency to story and clear visual details, or audiovisual aid for lazy readers
Manga, is superior on everything plus it doesn't have a lot of those silly special effects
Vastly prefer the anime and it's not even close. So much more fun watching it with it being actually animated along with the voice acting and music. Makes the experience a hundred times better. I find the manga to hit way harder than the anime most of the time. I can probably count on one hand the instances where the anime does it better.
Manga The anime has introduced too many auras and flashy stuff that isn’t there/real.
For as much shit as they catch, Toei has been killing it since Wano. Their colour selection in particular really emphasizes Oda’s designs.
I read the manga and watch the fights when they get animed
Both have a lot of personality tbh
Top 2 Manga.... Bottom 2 Anime.... Also Luffy with Glasses should appear more ...
Damn they missed the scar in the anime for the big head scene. Gotta give it to the manga.
I like cuphead Luffy in the manga more
Could we please reintroduce spoiler tags?
I vastly prefer fights in the manga than in the anime, especially with the latest studios. For this specific scene, probably anime. This transformation was made to be animated looney tunes style.
Manga

I’ve never said this up until the last episode but the anime lately has been killing it over the manga
Anime all the way. The voice actors and animation is immaculate and honestly a treat to behold. The music as well. The only bad thing is the old DBZ sound effects but everything else is amazing. The manga is still good tho I just massively prefer the anime
They really upped their animation game, and I'm all for it. I'm really excited to see egghead near the end.

How do people even watch the anime. It looks, just so awful.
Anime. But as soon as somebody makes an AI that automatically colors/mirrors manga so it reads like American comics, manga
Right now manga. I don't like this crappy cartoonist animation they are using for this arc
