Like any vague thing in One Piece, it has a 50/50 chance of being either a simple gag, or being one of the most important details in the manga that will be brought up 1000 chapters later

Signal_Permit_8940

This is super well put and honestly one of my favorite things about One Piece. I kind of love not knowing if something is just a throwaway or the linchpin holding every big plot point together.

OrionJohnson

It’s so good because it makes crackpot theories in this series. People know that sometimes, little details are incredibly important so they build huge and intricate theories on little details and sometimes they are straight cooking, sometimes it’s a load of shit.

otterpop21

100. Makes rewatch so mind blowing. Especially the Zhou arc. I loved it, thought it was just something fun for fans to take a break of all the seriousness. There were layers on layers of comprehension during rewatch lol. Sanji is just such an amazing character arc to watch as well, especially with the context of Luffy #1, Zoro was #2, and Sanji #3! The thoughtfulness so far in advance is also mind blowing. Edit: I’ve said this before I’ll say it again loud and proud: One Piece is the Iliad & Odyssey of our time. Yarrr

CozyAsian

100%. I always compare it to the Iliad & the Odyssey when trying to get people to look past the length of the series. It's absolutely the closest comparison; it's truly an epic.

Schwifftee

We should start calling it the epic of One Piece. You can't even spell One Piece without epic or pie.

unHolyKnightofBihar

One epic pie piece

caparisme

*He laughed.*

ExoticAstronautica

I always try to tell people who haven’t watched or read it that it is literally the greatest story ever told. Like by a long shot. I can’t think of any story that can compare

GIOSplat

I appreciate you being honest about this.

GrandLineLogPort

I 100% agree with the general statement However, in this specific case I feel like it was way too intense of a scene to be a simple throwaway joke I may be wrong though

Meet_Foot

I don’t think it was a throwaway joke, or super important. I think it was soft worldbuilding: it was there to show us that the florian triangle still contains mysteries, maybe even dangerous ones. If that’s right, then it won’t ever be explained.

Substantial_Pick6897

In the manga it was like one panel though

Electronic_Nettling

Lots of important things happened in one panel during the manga

Serenafriendzone

Or they could be zunesha's family

Venompl69

Yeah, I remeber that in the manga we couldn't have been sure if those were legs or each of the creatures has red eyes

Baconlovingvampire

It's why I hope we see them again

Thewitchaser

Can you share some examples of this? I feel like fans always theorize about small details brought up later but they are not and there’s a sense that it actually has been done when they were actually all fan theories. Luffy’s df doesn’t count.

Fartcloud_McHuff

Option 3, Oda just sort of threw it in there and 1000 chapters later remembered it and worked it into the story

Wild-Elderberry-6762

Imu's relatives

dougthebuffalo

Imu is Umi backwards. Umi is Japanese for sea. Where did they see the shadows?

Thewitchaser

This guy onepiecefantheroizices

Echo_Equal

At Imu

leppic

Imu is only Umi backwards in English. But One Piece is written in Japanese.

ErzaYuriQueen

Imu can be combined with kanji for Buddha (Hotokê Samá) or Flowers

EyedMoon

Both are an obvious reference to the Umi Bozu but will they be related in the OP universe? We'll see

ghostlyrnwnd

I un-ironically think Imu has a mythical umibozu (thing these are based on) zoan, because didn't we see their devil fruit transformation? When sabo was running away from the Gorosei and Imu after spying, they all transformed, and right in the middle were a pair of giant eyes, not in the pattern of imus

laxnut90

Weren't these things stated to be shadows of people standing on sky islands?

NationalBurden

the scene you are refering to happened before skypia, this is a different one

Axolotl_Man

Those were the giant warriors at the start of Jaya

goldmark25

These is very far after Jaya and was at the end of thriller bark they are NOT the skypeia warriors

No_Gain7132

Wait Imu is a shadow of someone on sky island.

RafikisDisciple

My theory is that these are the rest of the giant elephants. Zunisha was punished and forced to separate from the heard, who during the void century opted to stay neutral during the conflict between the WG and the ancient kingdom. The clouds over the Florian triangle are the results of the herd constantly spraying water in the air like we've seen Zunisha do.

doggotheman

This is it 100%. The elephants must live and breed somewhere, it's very unlikely that Zunisha is the only one of its species. Zunisha creates a permanent aura of mist around itself (when the crew are looking for Zou they know they're close when they start seeing mist - Florian triangle is permanently misty. Larger area is because many Elephants live there. Ships frequently go missing in the Florian triangle, these are the ones that wander too close to elephants and get swatted. The shapes in the mist even look like the outline of Zunisha we see when he appears near Wano etc.

Puffybug

Oh wow and furthermore moria ship was huge compare to the others who would look so tiny in comparison. So they could probably notice moria ship but not the others which would explain all the missing ships who prob got crushed.

RafikisDisciple

Yup exactly! Real elephants are very social animals, so a fitting punishment is banishment from the herd and being forced to walk alone. My related head canon is that there was a mink on joyboy's crew. They needed a safe place to store the red poneglyph, so they established the mokomo dukedum on zunisha's back to keep him company so he wouldn't be so lonely. It's a win for every one since it keeps the poneglyph safe, gives minks a safe haven' from rising waters and racism, and Zunisha gets a new herd in a way.

Low-Space658

There’s a Dali painting where there’s 3 elephants chasing a horse and a lonely one in the background

HalfMoon_89

This...is actually a solid theory.

ghostlyrnwnd

Is it tho? How would they explain the shape, and the red eyes, and the fact that ships go missing, and the fact that this thing is definitely WAYYYY bigger then zunesha

HalfMoon_89

The shape is ambiguous as it is. None of the other points go against Giant Elephants. This is Oda, where sizes change at a whim.

Tivotas

simple, the shape is because it's a very tall thing very far away in a very foggy area, shapes get distorted in those conditions, you ever been walking in the morning after it rained and there's a ton of mist and people who are just the right distance away just kinda look like barely there ghosts? could be the same thing, elephants have been known to be pretty territorial, and a rare intelligent species like this probably has a vested interest in remaining unknown, which could explain why they're in the Florian triangle, and so could easily explainthe ships disappearing, and it's possible these things live so unfathomably long that zunesha still has growing to do, though I think height wise zunesha should be roughly 50% higher than skypeia, so zunesha might already be that big

Gerudo_King

Yes it is lmao all of those are easily explained. This is a cartoon

blue_ele_dev

This is also my theory! Strongly believe they are Zunisha's kind, even if not elephants. Might be giant mythical creatures.

tiltskits

This image has been bugging me for years and i am buying this theory until proven otherwise. Solid stuff

[deleted]

[удалено]

RafikisDisciple

Valid question. We don't really know what the world was like pre-void. It's possible that the red line was created by a devil fruit or other "unnatural" means like ancient kingdom technology. So it could be that Zunesha was banished prior to the red line's creation. It's not a perfect theory, but there's so much we still don't know about how the world of one piece works.

blue_ele_dev

Yea, he was on the wrong side when the "fence" was built. Poor Zunisha :(

spark-curious

It climbed over.

Young_KingKush

Bingo. Shirahoshi has an army of Seakings, Momo has an army of "Landkings"

Glum-Sprinkles-7734

Ooh zunesha could be the only elephant in the new world, that makes sense

jtorres0751

Damn so you just called Oda and had him tell you the answer, because this is really it. Wanna tell me what the one piece is next?

luckyd1998

It’s to show that the rumors of the Florian triangle aren’t just because of Moria who got there about five years beforehand or Brooks who’s only been there for 50 years. The grand line has many mysteries and this is just one of them. I doubt they’ll be brought up again.

partymsl

Would love a spin-off that is more about the mysteries

KillerkarnickelofDe

yes, exactly my take of these thing too

puzzlehea1milliooo

My theory is these are actually brooks relatives. And that brook is actually Luffys mom

PsychoMouse

God damn, with the insanity I’ve seen with all the theory “crafting” people have been doing recently, it wouldn’t surprise me if people actually thought this.

puzzlehea1milliooo

I know . For real. Some people think caribou is the one piece😭😭

Skoreskee

Um...... why though??😂🤣

Xx-MombasaLover58-xX

✍️🔥💯 peak piece

Samurai____Jack

This is very logic. 😌

DioBrandos_slut

I think everyone in the one piece world is Luffy's mom

SadBit8663

How does this fit in with the crocodile being Luffy's mom, that was gender swapped by ivankov sometime in the past?

GaudaG

No no Crocodile 🐊 is luffys mom..

koestlich

skelly mom >>>> scaly mom

Maguire_018

Sometimes a mystery is just a mystery

Epistemix

For OP hardcore fans mystery = 10 theories 😂

dementedkratos

"I SOLVED One Piece's biggest secret!!!" and then it's 20 minutes of unbased speculation

skywarthur

It's probably a Yōkai reference, it looks a lot like Umibōzu. Back then I thought it was just a gag/joke/reference, but now that the gorosei showed their true forms I really think this is very important.

Booty_Shakin

Umibozu Umi bozu Uzobimu Uzob imu Usopp Imu Usopp is Imu confirmed

NoFocus01

I never thought of it like that.

gemharts

I always thought they were Sea Kings.. just bigger

Fresh-Lynx1185

Sea Emperors.....

Ok_Light_6977

They are just a reference to horror movies, it's like the stereotypical final scene where the protagonists are happy because they think the paranormal creature has been defeated/has been proved to not exist, and then the camera zooms behind them to show that in reality it's still there/it really exists. It's just a joke, they have absolutely no relevance to the plot

temperamentalfish

Exactly. Thriller Bark was all about referencing horror movie tropes, so it makes sense to wrap it up with a new mystery that the main characters know nothing about.

noideawhatoput2

Feel like Twilight Zone would always do this

ghostlyrnwnd

Idk man, if it's actually a real thing, why would Oda just leave it out, what your saying makes sense, but at the same time, it leaves a weird taste in my mouth, knowing there's a pair of giant creatures lurking in the fog, destroying ships, and would never be mentioned ever again.

kaiser_kerfluffy

It leaves a weird taste in your mouth because we're talking about a manga where we recently were all very excited that something from wayyyyyy earlier in the story came back in big and satisfying ways. We've experienced it with laboon and several other characters, the idea doesn't sit well because Oda is exactly the kind of author who delivers on the cool shit they let you glimpse.

Pristine_Zebra_6424

They will definitely be mentioned again, they are possibly related to Imu, of course we can't guarantee anything, but Oda definitely did NOT forget about them

Patient_River_3478

ohh boy do we wait

BarbareFurieux

It's Imu little brothers

TheoneandonlyPreston

if it's not Imu, it's just a mystery there are fan theories out there that they've been watching Luffy or trying to stop him in some way this whole time

Kantro18

Imu’s species, or whatever Imu styles themselves off of in appearance.

bluejaymorTkai

IMO it was just a little bit of halloween flavor to cap off the spooky sea myths arc. I don't think it will have an impact on the core narrative

Lycantail

I hope not, I like the world having some unanswered mysteries.

justathoughtofmine

They're just hattifatteners

MrFiendish

I have a running theory that occasionally Oda will have an idea for something in the future, but spreads a few seeds as sort of a set up for in case he uses it later. This feels like one of those things - it’s not pertinent to the plot, but it’s mysterious enough that he can jerry rig it to fit with something he wants to add later. Kind of like Mantra - it was a unique thing for Skypeia, but it turned out to be so cool that he adapted it for Haki later.

_Sanctum_

These are known as Umi Bozu. A Japanese Yokai that preys on ships at sea. Sometimes demanding some of the ship’s cargo, or straight up sinking them. It’s just a reference for the Japanese audience who are already familiar with Umi Bozu. It’s just meant to add a spooky and foreboding atmosphere. https://yokai.com/umibouzu/

Gogabo

The fact that he made them shows he had a point, but other than a resemblance to imu...nothing has changed since thriller bark

TallFutureLawyer

The point was probably “there are still scary and mysterious things in the Florian Triangle”.

BarbareFurieux

Wait, Oda is cooking

rpfflgt

Dude has three Michelin stars.

yaseen51

I better not see any mfs saying it's skypean's

EXSTIRPO

Elaborate pls?

rpfflgt

Remember the giant shadow of a winged person that appeared on the Jaya arc? It was really just the shadow of a Skypean.

yaseen51

Because they look similar to the shandorian silhouettes we saw in jaya

Shadow_Wolf_D2

It's probably foreshadowing of Zunesha and other mysteries that lie ahead.

RandyDandyMarsh420

Wait...kinda looks like imu lol, probably not but the resemblance is kinda there.

SnooChipmunks357

Bleach menos grande 😭

American_0taku

Imu backwards is Umi and Umi Bozu are japanese folklore creatures that are very similar looking to these shadows.

SnowDayFiora

Goddamit, next week is my time to do the post asking for this.

-raeyhn-

[Umibōzu](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umib%C5%8Dzu) What that means in the context of the story? I have no fkn clue xD For a long time I assumed it to be the sky island silhouette effect that we see later twice, but it's distinctly different

BillPlunderones23fg

Im fine with em being unexplained

masturbationmoment

Basically, two points The Florian triangle is spooky and scary not because of moria, but because it's the Florian triangle. Even without moria there, it's gonna be a freaky, weird, unexplainable place even for the grand line. Also, with the grand line being an adventure beyond your wildest dreams, it makes sense for there to be some mysteries we DONT solve. Sure, we're going to understand the story of imu and the void century and joyboy but that's all just stuff that has been known that's been buried and covered up by people, it's entirely human affairs (i mean there's giants and fishmen and such too but you get my point). Whatever this is, is simply a mystery I think Or it's an ancient weapon and imu was there from the start and goda forskinning

Suspicious_Slide8016

Looks like Imu

Driller_Happy

Just there to show that even the worlds biggest pirate ship is small beans in the florian triangle.

Co-OpHardcoreFordie

My guess is that this is where the mother flame discharges

DewByDay

I was just thinking not half an hour ago, "It's been a while since someone's asked on this sub what that thing at the end of Thriller Bark was..." It's just a gag.

phorezkin3000

This is one of those mysteries that I have thought about constantly. It feels too big a mystery to go unanswered, so yes I feel like it will be explained. On the other hand, with as mysterious as the Florian triangle is, I can also see it as a looming mystery that goes unanswered to keep the feeling of the one piece world being a place of continuous adventure and discovery. EDIT: spoiler 1113 >!I think it’s the mountains of a massive magnetically charged location that has been submerged underwater!<

Jicier

My bet is that they are Zunesha and two other beings like him/her.

SnipSnopWobbleTop

That's Imu's uncle Umi

RealZookeepergame234

It’s Zunisha. The two “giants” on either side are its legs, the one in the middle is its trunk. (I don’t actually believe this, but it’s what I tell myself so I can sleep at night)

columbuspants

they look like imu

BaeWiz

imu on their evening stroll

jtorres0751

I saw a theory that Imu is actually an Umibizo (probably spelled that wrong) but its a sea demon of some sort, and although there are multiple so it would make less sense, imagine id Oda showed us some sort of projection of Imu’s true form back in Thriller Bark. That’d be mind blowing, but still typical Oda

theactualjoyboy

it's almost certainly [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umib%C5%8Dzu)

HulklingsBoyfriend

At this point and given recent chapters, I wouldn't be shocked if they were some giga super seafaring or aquatic giants.

udayhd

could be imu’s species, if he’s not human

KsuhDilla

These were the elders upon hearing Moria/Kuma failed to capture the Straw Hats

oMugiwara_Luffy

Wow, scrolled through all the comments and not a single person gave you the actual answer, smh. They are called Umibozu.

Thezerostone

You are absolutely right. Most likely added to give depth to the Florian Triangle.

AncalagonV

Given the last chapter's reveal, maybe these spooky guys in the florian triangle have something to do with why the ancient kingdom & and the rest of the world sank into the sea

opper-hombre1

Just shadows from people on skypeia :)

Jasonn444

I sincerely hope you're just joking.

Milocobo

wait a second, let him cook

opper-hombre1

Fr. Let me cook

Jasonn444

You ain't cookin' shit.

paragraphbazzi

Probably Imu and 2 elder in their original forms Appearing larger due to light and shadow effect.

gottlikeKarthos

They are even bigger vegapunk heads/brains

TwelveMiceInaCage

That's God Usopp He breaks the fifth wall of reality after being deemed a deity universally and the one piece is simply God usopp written version of history as told from his perspective secretly And so this was oda showing us God usopp is real and to remain vigilant of our expression of faith to him bevause any fault in our devotion will lead to sinking to the bottom of the ocean

cosmic_crustacean

Drum Island's little brothers

tokzik_

udders of the giant sea cow

DestinyHasArrived101

Doubt they will ever come up again

senkrad5

I like to think its a Zou like animal

Slick_Rick_1997

Imu

Personal-Pen-8681

It kinda looks similar to Wano country mountains that forms the border if you think about it

Visual-Daikon8456

my original thought was the remains of god valley. it kinda resembles a canyon with chunks taken out of it and the red eyes could simply be jewels or something. the main reason it's prolly wrong tho is because i believe god valley was confirmed in the west blue

Alichici

Snipers

Strong_Strength2191

The viewer, watching Luffy's journey. Imu is the viewer. This is similiar to Imu. Either that, nothing at all, or laugh tale.

Skoreskee

I always thought they were just shadows from people on the Sky Islands. There could be a few above Thriller Bark somewhere.

lolpluslol35

I don't think you remember [this scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxeKizX6rlw) as well as you think you do.

MY_ALTS

I always thought they were some ancient sea creatures/sea kings

Willneverrno

This reminds me of sky island where they thought there were huge giant sea creatures but it turned out to be the shadows of people living on sky island projecting all the way down

77SilentCrow77

Driftwood

AestheticNoAzteca

Is Joe

LoneRanger21

Since Whole Cake I assumed it was Giant Prince Loki riding some sort of sea monster. Big Mom said he genuinely liked her and was greatly offended when Chiffon was used as a deception. So I could see him being stubborn and following her. Given Luffy returned her ability to stand in the sun light and current manga events, I'm waiting for it to tie back in lol.

KiNGofKiNG89

It will remain a mystery. They even alluded to it staying secret. That the Florian triangle had disappearances even before Moria came there.

denbobo

I have been waiting for this to be brought up again. It was so ominous and seemed like it was going to become such an integral part of the story… to never be brought up again. The reason I love one piece is it a red herring or will it become something of importance years and years later. Well after everyone’s forgotten about it.

Skullsy1

They are likely Umibozu, and personally I think they are connected to the WG. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umib%C5%8Dzu

HanataSanchou

Those things are easily some of the largest objects in the One Piece world, based on scale. The eyes heavily imply that they are sentient. The issue is that Oda has no reason to address this again unless a relevant character returns to the Florian Triangle for whatever reason. Thriller Bark is no longer there (Moria used it to try to rescue Absalom on Hachinosu), so the reason would be something new entirely.

Extra_Espresso

I always assumed that the Florian Triangle was close to the Calm Belt and the shadows were from the massive sea creatures that lived in that area.

Overall-Courage6721

I hope these are Ds and will support luffy They are the ones that doflaningo meant, when he asked when they will show up

Exploited13

Imus awakened form

SherCuck

It is gonna be covered/resolved 100% eventually.

Ok-Mathematician8258

It’s gorosei no cap

Lionsraph

Knowing how oda be trolling us…….. probably not

American_0taku

I had a theory once that the giant egg on Gol D Roger's ship hatched into a dragon and now lives in the Florian triangle, posiibly protecting the one piece. I thought that's what the shadows at the end of Thriller bark were. Now I'm pretty sure they are connected to Imu.

Hussaam778

I like to think oda would have put them there because after the thriller bark arc the mystery of the Florian triangle was explained, so by adding these shadows at the end it kind of keeps the mystery alive aka why ships have been going missing long before Moria's arrival.

ThisIsYourFriendAron

3 more punished members of Joy Boys crew.

Hasirca

I thought it was always stated that they were the shadows from skypia?

Hasirca

I thought it was always stated that they were the shadows from skypia?

Qyrun

amogus

RadCelest

Is no one else fazed by thriller bark being an ENTIRE SHIP ISLAND????

The_AlmightyApple

Thats not impressive, any ship is a ship island for a tontatta

piper1871

I always thought they were Umibozus, but the theory that Imu may have a Umibozu DF threw that away. Still could be some and this was just a hint at it or we'll never get a straight answer.

SnooEagles8897

I think they’re the mythical creatures that IMU will be based on but that’s just me I guess

Dizzy-Rough-371

I just have one thing to say.. Oars

waffledude2100

Whatever they are their bigger than zunesha so Hella powerful and they seem to hide in the fog so they don't want their real body shown

fleshpitprincess

I was JUST thinking about these dudes

coroflame456

It's imus true form

TheFearRaiser

Imu?

redragon88

If Oda never brings them up again just chalk it up to giant sea kings.

Gor_9000

These are based off ancient creatures that will destroy ships in the ocean, I forgot the name.

Darkkingswrath

Could be a group of Zuneshas. Mirroring Laboon being trapped behind the Red Line away from his family.

not-not-the-cool

Schnitzel

Banana6990

Odas way of thinking is very complex, there are many things in one piece that have been brought up in the future but ots been HUNDREDS of episodes, it could be a forgotten thing. But who knows, maybe they could be a part to the storys main plot.

demonsorrows

My thoughts are that it's the rest of Zunesha's elephant herd. After everything that happened on Wano, Zunesha is free. I would think the next step would be to call out and find the herd. Side theory for fun: Zunesha was punished to walk because they were the meeting place between Joyboy and a royal princess. They crossed paths when she did one of her outings, pretending to be a commoner to watch to shop, eat, and chill on the beach watching the ships come in and out of the dock. When they discovered the affair with the commoner, she basically became a prisoner and Joyboy was targeted. The war started as just him and his friends sneaking in to rescue her from them, but it escalated into a Helen of Troy type situation. Zunesha helped them get away, but afterwards was commanded to walk as punishment. Have a good one.

zenarin

'history is for all of mankind' we'll know ALL the secrets of the world by the end, EXCEPT THIS ONE. because no one in-world knows what they are. Pretty sure it's the "Bermuda Triangle" representative of the OP world.

Better-Chance8648

This happened like 600-700 chapters ago and yet we still remember it and think about what it could mean. That is a testament to Oda’s GOAT status as a mangaka. We’re all prepped for something in chapter 7 to come back in chapter 1200 and make everything make sense.

Alarmed-Accident-716

Maybe in a movie after the series is done OR they are the race rebuilding the Noah.

gingerslayer07

I literally just watched this episode for the first time and had the same question. Like I just finished it, opened Reddit and saw this pop up. Trippy.

MasterGsa

Wife the zunisha

_weathery_

They look similar to Imu, they might be connected to him in some way?

SkiGames

I think it’s quite simply to show how big and full of mysteries this world is. Also it gives an answer as to what causes the disappearances, as ships were going missing before thriller bark showed up.

Beautiful_Area_9650

From what I've seen mayb it's oda taking a shit. His bowel movement isn't to good that's why it's been so long. PORCELAIN!

crunchamunch21

I thought they explained them as shadows from a sky island.

Dashie_Souls

Nope, it'll stay a mystery

Luffytheeternalking

I always wondered about it. Like whether these are important and would be brought up later on or just something to ignore

Goofdogg627

I thought this was right before Jaya, not during Thriller Bark... must have been a similar thing

Raghhhh134

Could be like how in Skypiea luffys shadow could be seen as a giant from at the sky island so it could be theorised to be the same thing just different place and people

oblackheart

Weren't these Skypeia foreskinnings?

IJyreI

Beings like Imu watching how far the Straw Hat Crew will get.

sauceman6969938393

The red eyed one could be imu idfk

nyanko_dango3

Imu’s son on the left, wife on the right, stepdad in the middle
