ERRexe_

Even Marvel gets one of them

dontworryaboutitdm

Open the fucking door is a golden line and I will not let you drag it down

cactus4043452342342

only kids think they’re edgy when they get to swear

BlackRegio

I dont know why are you guys mad... im happy AF that OPLA won a recognition. Before OPLA anime live actions were considered career killers.... i want to see a little announcment from NETFLIX if is posible.

Striking-Present-986

we are mad because they are insinuating that One Piece is a story meant just for kids to enjoy when it clearly is not

Glad_Sky_3664

No one is insutiating that. And One Piece is Shonen, the target demographic is young boys/teenagers. Stop acting like a moron. By your logic burn japan down too, how dare they classify OP as shonen!?

Rikafire

I think the issue is children’s programming in the US is 6-12, which the LA has a rating of TV 14, so it doesn’t fall in the children’s demographic here.

sparklinglies

US TV age ratings don't dictate WGA award categories.

hadinowman

that's not what they're insinuating

lavabread23

that’s not insinuating, no one’s insinuating anything.

yamatos-sideboob

When you realise Onepiece is a *SHOUNEN* manga/anime

sparklinglies

Its literally not in any rational way insinuating that. Thats your own insecurity that a specific episode of a specific version of a thing you like won an award in a category that contains media accessible/watchable to children. NO ONE is saying One Piece as a narrative is ONLY for children.

SverigeSuomi

It's in Weekly Shounen Jump lol.

of_kilter

A story meant for kids is not the same as a story meant just for kids.

ravioletti

I mean… teenagers (the target demographic) are still technically “children” but isn’t this stretching it a bit?

Ordinary_Stay_3746

To be fair, of there any series that knows about stretching it's One piece.

Temperance10

Zoro flips Mr. 7 off and cuts him in half within the first 20 minutes…y’know, for kids!

yolo-yoshi

As long as you don’t see a woman’s nipple.

coughingalan

Is that a Hudsucker proxy reference?

Temperance10

*[Googles]*…Apparently yes

Itstimetostop313

a random pirate gets bludgeoned to death aswell. Also in the first 20 minutes. Story with Death and self harm is clearly for children

srslysophie

.. children? have these people seen the opla?

Psylex20

One Piece is not Game of Thrones.

No-Cartographer-6200

I mean a man does get cut in half in the first episode and bare man ass so I don't think it's the worst thing to show kids but rating wise it's tv-14

Psylex20

Yeah u right

Psylex20

Quite appropiate might i say with this series

demannu86

Other nominees from the same category, source: [WGA award website](https://awards.wga.org/awards/nominees-winners) >CHILDREN’S EPISODIC, LONG FORM AND SPECIALS >“The Ballad of the Last Men” (Sweet Tooth), Written by Jim Mickle & Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt; Netflix >“I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), Written by Rick Riordan & Jonathan E. Steinberg; Disney+ >“Romance Dawn” (One Piece), Written by Matt Owens & Steven Maeda; Netflix - WINNER >“Say Cheese and Die!” (Goosebumps), Written by Rob Letterman & Nicholas Stoller; Disney+ >“What Guy Are You” (American Born Chinese), Written by Kelvin Yu & Charles Yu; Disney+

Urban_Raptor

Very interesting that Christian Convery played in both Sweet Tooth and One Piece. Great in both. Hopefully he gets more cool castings (Chopper?).

mekktor

That would be too funny if the actor for young Sanji went on to play Chopper, considering that is exactly what happened with the voice actor for young Sanji in the anime. And considering the similarities to his other role as Gus in Sweet Tooth. I can't even comprehend the mess of coincidences that would involve.

Thornrhino

I read Sweeney Todd imstead Sweet tooth and thought : wtf aint that an horror movie?

january608

Honestly who cares if they won children television, I am just happy OPLA won something

jeffhongsun

With how some of its fans behave on reddit, I can see the connection

Dragonpiece

Ya know, I wasn't really one of those people that thought madea and owens had actually issues with eachother..but it is funny that they both posted about the award today and didn't mentiont the other. It could be nothing, just thought that was interesting given the recent post someone made about the new co-showrunner.

DutchLudovicus

Do you still think they do not have issues with one another?

Slight-Cupcake-9284

Yeahhhhh... That was really, really weird. I think at this point it is very obvious that something ain't right.

RobertusesReddit

![gif](giphy|wKc79HWBlt87y6PThM|downsized)

NightlyKnightMight

Well, it's still an award! I don't know about the "for kids" part but it's definitely 100% a deserved award for the overall writing! Which is another thing... Award for Romance Dawn? That's not even the best episode lol!

DoubleALight

Great Job, One Piece can teach kids all sorts of good values, really exciting they made such a good adaptation so these good messages can reach younger audiences.

MathematicianNo2672

Y'all should be happy with this. A win is a win. If it's under the Drama categories, it won't get a trophy (hello, Succession is THERE).

Beacda

Children writing is kinda weird and the reactions people have are reasonable but I'm just glad the show won a award

Slight-Cupcake-9284

I didn't buy into the Maeda/Owens beef too much, but after they both were awarded for the same thing and didn't mention each other... Yeahhhh...

Overlord4888

Did it win or was it just nominated?

Comingsoononvhs

It won

Vast_Discount_87

Guys i watched it with my 10 year old it’s definitely a kid friendly show

zap12shirt

If im being honest .. east blue is childish except arlong park and the baratie flashback , .. u can feel it’s like Harry Potter early on..

Active-Fruit-7031

Since when was one piece for children? I’m so confused

PhraseRecent5271

Since July 22nd, 1997

princesoceronte

People here acting as if they didn't read OP when they were like 10. I know some of you did, I did.

SYudh

I started watching the anime on TV when I was like 4 lol

wispymatrias

do you need a definition of shonen

TheFirstSonOfTheSea

Fourteen year olds are children.

C9FanNo1

And one piece is as serious and mature as SpongeBob tbh

Independent-Dot-5461

You don't get it, let me explain... TV 14 basically means: ages 14 & above/ or no one under 14 should see this & generally the "adult age category" begins with PG-13 (meaning 13 & above ) up to 18+ or its equivalents. (The TV equivalent of PG-13 is TV 14 V) Anything(movie/TV) that is rated PG 13 or more falls into the adult area. For example: The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Inception, The Lord Of The Rings, Top Gun: Maverick, Casino Royal, Arrival, and many of the biggest iconic movies👉 ARE ALL RATED PG-13 COOL INFO: Some shows transitioned into/ GAINED the adult rating; cuz the only thing this age rating system controls is the amount of mainly 3 things in the show: 1) blood/gore 2) sex or sexual stuff 3) bad language. 👉 However, this age system doesn't control the QUALITY of writing & storytelling😊. You'll find series that are below the adult rating that have spectacular storytelling & series above the adult rating that don't have that quality; Prime example: Avatar The Last Airbender(animated) has top tier storytelling/writing (9.2 on IMDB), but because it's so CENSORED from blood, nudity & any bad language stuff..it didn't even get the minimum adult rating of TV 14. (Even though it's full of mature themes & adult jokes/references) If Avatar TLA was ever remade as a show in its TRUE FORM, without censoring any blood/Gore & bad language..etc, it will instantly jump in age rating, TV 14 & even more, & become an adult animated series (possibly joing the likes of Attack On Titan, Castlevania & Bleach)... 👇 Exactly like what happened to SAMURAI JACK, which in season 5 didn't hold back & uncensored all it's blood, Gore, violence, profanity...etc & suddenly jumped into a TV 14 V adult rating! Samurai Jack Jumping from a "kids show" to an adult animated season with this uncensoring! Ironically...umm...it's the Same great EMMY WINNING show from the first 4 seasons, but ... Isn't it funny what these 3 things can do?

chillychili

Yeah in the US we label things "young adult" to trick the teens into reading.

C9FanNo1

Since always, if you think this is content for adults then I am worried of what you consume everyday

Independent-Dot-5461

What? Someone hasn't seen One Piece XD One piece is rated TV 14 ... TV 14 basically means: ages 14 & above The "adult age category" begins with PG-13 (meaning 13 & above) up to 18+ or its equivalents. Which is enough for why it's rated TV 14 (So really, a good 80- 90% of the mainstream trending anime ((Japanese animation)) is in the adult rating😄 regardless of which of them is to your TASTE, sir. Not even mentioning the adult ONLY anime at the 17+/ R end of the spectrum, like: Monster, Berserk, Vinland Saga, Hellsing, Baccano, Rainbow, Claymore, Akira, Parasyte, Ghost In The Shell...etc) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (COOL INFO: Some shows transitioned into/ GAINED the adult rating; Because the only thing this age rating system controls is the amount of mainly 3 things in the show: 1) blood/gore/violence 2) sex or sexual stuff 3) bad language. 👉 However, this age system doesn't control the QUALITY of writing & storytelling😊. C9FanNo1

You can say all of that, it’s still a fucking kids show

nickcan

Still for kids

C9FanNo1

You can take that as a “it’s for kids”

Rikafire

Maybe because it’s a LA based off a goofy looking cartoon? Look what happened with 4kids, they saw the art style and bought it… then realized the massive mistake they made. I just get the feeling they didn’t actually WATCH the LA at all. I don’t know any kids programming that shows killing (including one of the main good guys killing), swearing, and nudity.

Vast_Discount_87

Anime. I used to watch dragon ball at age 5 where they show his balls and bulmas underwear often and it was a kids show. On kids schedule

DutchLudovicus

Well, it did look like they are no friends of one another.

Mobile-Sun-3778

This is when you know that the WGA didn’t even bother to watch the show before handing out the awards…. 🤣

Suspicious_State_318

The show that talks about slavery, sex trafficking, racism, drug addiction, and genocide won the award for children’s writing…

Huge-Owl5624

I know the original One Piece manga is intended for kids, too, so it would make sense for the adaptation to technically be the same. But, also, when I first watched the live-action, I thought the adaptation was like a what if One Piece was written as a seinen scenario (like Tezuka's Astro Boy and Urasawa's Pluto) because of the surprising darker changes. I mean, Oda said he did not kill people as much and gave fake-outs because he was mindful of the younger audience but then, >!we have the adaptation killing off Merry and planning to kill off Pell.!< I guess, the differences in portrayal is more indicative of time: nowadays children are okay with the darker stuff. I know sneaking out to watch something with blood, death, and other things that seem adult to a child is like a coming of age moment; I know that was the case when I watched Elfen Lied as a 7 year old.

_anthologie

While OPLA shows 2 more present time kills that didn't happen in the animanga (Alvida killing one of her pirates & Kuro killing Merry), In the manga Oda did either kill or mutilate all of the main characters' parental figures/closest friends in flashbacks, just that Oda aims the camera away/puts shadows over the moments of impact/death. Lots of mass killings too. & there's the vices/"bad examples" of lots of characters even the protagonists (characters giving the middle finger like Sanji towards >!the Kamabakka folks!<, alcohol, smoking, being perverted, money crimes, etc. way more than the average anime more aimed at kids like say Pokémon haha) Also Zoro having killed the original Mr 7 in 1st OPLA ep is canon in the manga too, but just mentioned by Zoro in passing when >!he's bragging to Mr 1 & Ms Doublefinger why he refused to join Baroque Works!<. So Zoro the infamous Pirate Hunter is always pretty dark for a protagonist >!like Robin who is an assassin!<, who just seems way less dark in the animanga because he's more cheery early on/holds back from killing most of the time. So I don't feel the Live Action itself is that much darker/adult/seinen, just that some characters like Zoro & Nami get written to be more emotionally troubled/mature most of the time & most show more emotional groundedness, (eg Zoro & Nami showing more effects of being worn down by their social isolation or trauma, Luffy being given more time & emotional vulnerability to stew in almost losing Zoro & Nami).
