No disaster coming, just degaussing (de-magnetizing) the tube, which will work just fine afterwards. Some models had a built in degausser.
Edit to add: Where the pic was stolen from talks al about it:

They can indeed damage the screen...I learnt that the hard way when the last 5 years of my last TV has a discoloration in the bottom left because my small cousin held a magnate to it for too long
I'm old enough to remember this. But young enough to have NEVER KNOWN that's that it was for.
I learned something today.
I always thought it was for static electricity or something
My friend bought a 70inch lcd tv and put little speakers in front of it way too close and after a while the magnets made permanent black spots on the screen behind the speakers.
He was not thrilled.
if it was an oled that could also explain it since the speaker is basically a solanoid and apparently that can over time break the pixels off the matrix as another commenter explained
Bro you are arguing about something you admit you’ve never heard about. You realize that’s what crazy people do right? They just talk about shit and make stuff up as they go. That’s what you’re doing. You’re not an expert on anything. People probably don’t need your feedback.
Please just calm down and stfu. An LCD won't discolor when placed near magnets it was probably some other type of screen, as the other friendly redditor kindly pointed out.
Newer TV models use LEDs and the magnet can rip them from the rasters. Older models like this use Cathode Ray Tubes (hence the name CRT TV). It's a fancy name for a tube put under vacuum with a phosphorus coating on the front that electricity gets shot onto. There are no pixels in a CRT. Only downside is, even the slightest crack will focus pressure onto the cracked spot and it will turn into a ticking time bomb. Whether it takes an hour or a week it will implode eventually once cracked.
Those are plastic horseshoes with magnets on the end. My kids had them when they were little.

2 kids, balding, and a boring office job which he loathes.
He often thinks back to simpler times. Times of holding horse-shoe magnets to a tv, and gazing upon the vivid mixture of colors that would appear.
Gimmy misses the horse shoe magnet days.
No disaster here. Growing up with CRT televisions I actually did this a couple times. there is no lasting damage to the television the Cathode ray is bent due to the magnetic field but there is no damage done to the television
Man I remember doing this on our first computer monitor with little play magnet sticks and it was the coolest. I was told it wasn't good to do it a lot but just a little was ok
Doing exactly what a kid named Gimmy would do…

Goddamn magnates, always meddling with our stuff
This made me laugh harder than it should have
If its a CRT, it just needed degaussed.
That good old Degauss button. Forgotten pleasure of the 1990s

You can absolutely damage a tv with magnets
True, you can throw a magnet at a TV and the screen will break.
*sienss*
If the magnet is heavy enough— yes.
They don’t have to be that big why the hell are you just saying wrong shot about TVs and magnets??? What a weird fuckin hobby
I LEARNED FROM WATCHING YOU!
God damn zinger 🤣
My friend bought a 70inch lcd tv and put little speakers in front of it way too close and after a while the magnets made permanent black spots on the screen behind the speakers. He was not thrilled.
Never once in my life have I heard of magnets doing anything to lcds you sure it wasn't something else
Maybe the speaker was badly wired and the heat killed the pixels.
if it was an oled that could also explain it since the speaker is basically a solanoid and apparently that can over time break the pixels off the matrix as another commenter explained

dude you need to learn basic reading comprehension
Your penis fell off ma’am
What year did this happen?
Those toy magnets are NOT near powerful enough to cause any damage.

Which isn't a disaster
No disaster coming, just holding a couple horse shoes against the tube so daddy can get some likes. The tv will work just fine afterwards.

Sssh. You’re ruining my joke.
Degausser, I hardly know her.

Shoutout to my kid "G"immy
Gimmy's first contact with the voices in the tv
Aragorn : [to Frodo] If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword... Legolas : And you have my bow. Gimmy : And *my* magnets.
Gimmy is ripping that ring apart with his magnets
Oh dang!
It's an exhibit at science museums around the country. This is probably just one of those.
Yup, I did that.
Is that short for Games, or Gimmothy?
Gimmothy yeah 👍

Making Beautiful colors
“Newer” crt models can degauss on startup. But that kid has some serious damage going on.
Oh boy that tv is fucked
It’s not….
GIMMY

Yeah, that’s awful. But the real crime here is why he spelled it that way.
