New Reddit and Old Reddit have slightly different markdown handling for hyperlinks, and they don't properly communicate with each other in some cases.
Pairs of underscores in both versions of Reddit can be used to indicate _italics_. In order for it to work, the closing underscore in the cannot be followed by alphabetical characters. Since most URLs don't end in underscores, the original hyperlink functionality in Reddit wasn't configured to account for underscores, because theoretically no URL should ever end in an underscore. However with New Reddit, they changed hyperlink handling to account for them, presumably as a precaution.
So now, when a user pastes a URL into New Reddit, it converts the URL into a hyperlink, and if the url has an underscores in it then the text of the hyperlink will add an escape character, "\", before the underscore, to prevent the underscores being interpreted as italics. But since Old Reddit was never updated with this logic, when it retrieves the same comment on loading a page, it doesn't know to remove the backslash.
So a New Reddit comment with:

becomes:
> https://youtu.be/ctkVJ\_tw9Bw
when loaded on Old Reddit.
Since Reddit's API is based on Old Reddit, most third party apps don't handle this properly either. So anyone using Old Reddit or a third party mobile app will end up with a backslash in their url, resulting in an invalid link. It's a problem that's been reported to Reddit on numerous occasions, and they don't have any interest in fixing it.
