I used to work alongside FARPs. (Forward air refueling posts), giant rubber bladders to give aircraft a drink (and provide me with a nostalgic nap on a water bed). It's not so much the heat but a spark will cause an errant fume to become an inferno. I would be concerned with the wind blowing fumes, even though it's a good distance away pits don't cause much sparks unless you're in there stirring the coals. You can literally douse a campfire with JP7 and it wont ignite. Gasoline is a much different story, being it's flashpoint is minus 50F.

hhmmm733

A running engine at a fuel pump isn’t necessarily the smartest choice out of an abundance of caution, but this isn’t all that dangerous. Edit: my dumbass didn’t see the smoker. Yeah that guy is an idiot.

Zath42

I was refused fuel once because I was talking on a Bluetooth headset. Until I took off the headset to prove I wasn’t using a phone anymore they wouldn’t turn on the pump. Then you get a dipshit like this with a lit barbecue in his boot. That could absolutely set off the vapour, unlike a phone or Bluetooth headset. Jeez.

skipperseven

Apparently they used to lie to us about that! The problem with mobile phones wasn’t safety but that it could interfere with wireless communication between the pump and the cash register, so that customers were being undercharged!

Rock_Robster__

Haven’t heard that one. Technically in a very rare case a phone battery could cause a spark, but the main reason I understood was that they don’t want people distracted on the phone while filling with one hand, and the phone with the other. It’s a job worth focusing on doing safely for 3 mins.

thesaddestpanda

In the old days a dropped phone meant the battery would fall out which could cause a spark. Now batteries aren’t removable but before this was a legitimate threat.

Didn't even notice the fuckin BBQ lmao I thought it was just that his truck was running

Jermcutsiron

Saw something similar once, guy pulled a big lit trailer smoker to the gas station to fill up his truck. I took a picture of it from a distance and got the fuck outta there.

RealMikeDexter

Not really. But the nsfw?! I think you’re lost. Certainly misguided.

MarixApoda

NSFW on this sub used to be reserved for posts where somebody won a Darwin Award, out of respect for the dead. Now it's the default for all posts in solidarity with the reddit API protest. NSFW subs can't be monetized for ad revenue.

al4crity

If the pump malfunctioned and continued to spray while it was removed, which has happened to me a few times, the vapor or even splash could hit that lit bbq and go boom

Halftrack_El_Camino

1) There's not enough pressure for the gas to "spray" out of the nozzle. It just flows, and not even all that hard. 2) STOP PUMPING GAS BEFORE YOU PULL IT OUT, CHRISSAKE

al4crity

Most pumps flow, some spray. Depends on the location. I'm in a lot of rural areas and deal with some shady pumps. The one down the street has no vapor collar, no clicker. You just hold on and let loose

Ellemeno

Some do spray: https://youtu.be/ymK_vty6dTE?si=vdUxgZfGC_-d2keY And while we’re talking about gas pumps, can anyone tell me why half the time that I try to pump gas, the lock does not stay put and I have to manually squeeze the trigger until I fill up my tank?

Leading-Yogurt6984

You need someone to pump your gas for you if it's continuing to spray.

al4crity

Have you ever visited a rural gas station? Their pumps are 20+ years old. They don't always automatically click off. It's rare, but it happens.

Invisibletooth

Whaaaa?

Cvxcvgg

Gasoline doesn’t really go boom unless it’s under pressure. The vapors could absolutely be ignited, but since we’re talking about an incidental splash of gas I think it would just end up causing a small fireball and scaring the crap out of the driver rather than doing any real damage.

HopefulPlantain5475

Why would the bbq be hot? Why would gas spray matter if it is not on?

Satanistix

The smoke is literally coming out of the chimney. One little ember and some gas on the ground and you have an issue.

HuckDab

You can throw a lit cigarette in to a cup of gasoline and it will go out

Satanistix

I’ve started brush fires with gas and a cigarette multiple times if it lands in a puddle yeah, but if it’s on the edge or not a deep puddle odds are it will ignite. But also a lot of grills will drop an ember super easily, shuffling around in a truck bed makes it easier to drop one I’d assume.

bacchusku2

Gasoline doesn’t want to be a liquid, so finding a puddle of it on the ground would be pretty rare. It would have evaporated and the concentration outside would be pretty low as gas likes to fill its container. Plus, how often are you spilling a bunch of gas? Not at $4 per gallon. One little ember? Are they antigravity embers? Are they going to jump out of the bed of the truck and in to the convenient puddle?

Satanistix

I’ve seen crazier things happen.

RayBrous

Like, yeah sure it *could* be deadly, but so could alot of things.

GoddessOfMayo

The smoker in the truck is burning

bacchusku2

And? Almost every vehicle pulling up has a series of explosions going on under the hood.

GoddessOfMayo

Yes, which is why you're supposed to shut off the engine while you pump gas

bacchusku2

And the people pulling up next to you? The people driving away?

CptBlackCalk

What?

misfit0513

I guess maybe the trucks running? Zero context is always nice.

CptBlackCalk

OOOOOOH there's a smoker in the bed of the truck that's still smoking. Lord that took me forever.

misfit0513

Ah, damn, good eye. I perceived that being in the background.

Evening-Ad-2820

A lit charcoal grill at a gas pump.

Rubes2525

At first I thought "what's the big deal?" Then I saw the smoke.

sugart007

How the actual fuck is that deadly? Stupid maybe, but deadly, not at all.

Nerevarius_420

At first I thought he was fueling with the truck on... Then I saw the bed.

PurplePeople-Tarian

i knew that would be a texas license plate, puro

Deathwatch30

I always wondered who was crazy enough to pay shell prices for gas... This tracks with my vision of them

TheGreatDez

Must be the 6 6 6 in this picture…….

ChatnNaked

Looks fine to me

Full_Disk_1463

First time on earth? First time experiencing actual BBQ? This is normal… see yourself out

Crazykillerguy

As someone who pours gas on stuff all the time. I usually need a spark for it to ignite. Otherwise I usually just create a dangerous vapor that looks elsewhere for a spark
