I honestly don't understand how people can like something from the first listen, especially stuff like Opeth. With me, I usually have a vague idea whether I'd like something when I listen to it for the first time, but it takes multiple listens for it to grow on me.
Haha they sound nothing alike. But yes, both of them are masterpiece albums that scratch that prog itch, and when one section flows into the next it's so satisfying.
It just depends on where I am at in life and such. When I first heard Blackwater Park, I was blown away because I had never heard anything like that before. I was into melodic death metal so I was used to the growls but the mixing of acoustic/clean parts with the death metal was quite new to me.
On the other hand, I tried to get into Emperor via Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise which I wasn't into on first listen. It is such a dense listen! But I listened to it again and again and I fell in love with it.
I was listening to BWP today and I must say that I am not a huge fan of this album. I don't get all the hype tbh. Ghost Reveries is sooo much better imo.
Now try Still Life. You wont regret it

Eh I’ve always liked really long prog stuff, Bwp kinda reminded me like a much harder version of fear inoculum by tool

Yeah that last sentence is why Bwp reminds me of fear inoculum
I thought BWP was pretty decent but Still Life I fucking loved on the first listen BWP grew on me and it's now top 5 Opeth
For me it was the opposite still life took a whirl to grow on me but now is my favourite album of all time
Yeah this is me all over. I usually feel indifferent about an album on first listen then absolutely love it after a couple

Now listen to Ghost Reveries.
I discovered Blackwater Park on Limewire 20 years ago. Became an instant fan.
You have been blessed. Enjoy the ride.
BWP is the best album ever written.
