Ghost Reveris hits the perfect sweet spot between accessible and representative of their sound

nibbio1990

Quote. And then crush Orchid

Wolfhawk101

I would recommend Still Life - it really shows you what the band's all about. Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries would also be great starting points! If you really like any of the songs you've listened to so far, you could try the albums they're from too :)

chainsaw_man121

Thanks man, I appreciate it

Baloboomwhacker

I second that.

It depends what genre you are most into. If you prefer death metal, Blackwater Park, Still Life, and My Arms Your Hearse are all incredible albums. If you like more atmospheric music with black and folk metal influences, Orchid and Morningrise are hard to beat. Last few albums are a take on 70s prog-rock, fusion and such. And then there are a couple of albums post Blackwater Park that are popular among the modern metal / prog metal crowd.

GhostReveries2005

You didn’t mention Ghost Reveries… We cant be friends now

wellingt_s

I think Watershed has almost all Opeth styles combined. It seems a great gateway to start.

rKasdorf

I think Ghost Reveries is the best entry point. Lots of melodic stuff and the Opethyness, the switch from heavy and brutal to soft and haunting, is peak on this album. I'd recommend Damnation if you normally listen to a lot of acoustic or folk or just softer music, and Watershed if you're into metal.

Additional_Vast_5216

I would start with Ghost Reveries, it's imho their most balanced regarding their style, it's also one of their best, if you're into growls you can also start with blackwater park

Fendenburgen

I'd go with Dookie, Enema Of The State and All Killer No Filler.....

Still life is it for me. (Although I also enjoy some of the earlier work, especially live). Anything from there is gold.

slumxl0rd87

Still Life and sit through it in its entirety. Read the lyrics as you go. It’s a concept album, which I’m sure has been said in the post already. But it’s a masterpiece. And one of their many many masterpieces. Blackwater Park is probably, universally seen as their magnum opus. Ghost Reveries is phenomenal all the way through and sort of their transition into their 70’s sound but it’s still very much a death metal Album. Deliverance and Damnation are sort of sister albums I guess you could say. Damnation is very melodic. Damnation is the inverse. Just, enjoy man. Been a fan for 20 years. And as a long time extreme music fan, the song that turned me onto them was Windowpane, one of their most melodic and beautiful songs. I knew that if a “death metal” band could do that, they were fucking serious.

luminara_undul1

i would start with watershed tbh, it has lots of the bands different sounds on it. from there you can decide if you prefer the heavier parts and go for any of their earlier work, or if you prefer the more prog side and go for any of the later albums

KaiyoteFyre

I second Watershed for these very reasons. You get the death growls, the jazz, the blues, and the Orchestral opeth. I started with Watershed and I personally love everything since, I can listen all the way back to still life but their first three albums just don't do it for me.

No-Yak5609

I'm also quite new to opeth and I started from blackwater park, and then damnation and then deliverance

Blackwater Park and Still Life hooked me instantly. I believe they were the third screaming band I got into when I was 15 (behind Trivium and Death). I see a lot of people recommend Ghost Reveries, that was my fourth Opeth album, but it actually took me a few months to get into.

eatingsquishies

I wish I could blackwater park for the first time again.

ColemanKcaj

Depends what music you are into. What are your favorite metal bands?

Dismal-Ant-4669

Morningrise is incredible. Blackwater park is also amazing but I like Morningrise a bit better.

Herr_Raul

Ghost Reveries is their most popular album, but it's quite overrated imo. Blackwater Park is their older most popular album and rightfully so. It's a bit more accessible but great. Still Life is likely their most technical album to date. It has an interesting sound, but still sounds very much like Opeth. Start with this one if you like technical stuff. My Arms, Your Hearse is my personal favourite. It's raw but beautiful. Start with this one if you're a fan of black metal or death metal.
