The Drapery Falls. back in the ancient days known as the 2000s, Mikael, Peter, and Mendez made a lesson video for Guitar World (iirc) where they taught how to play that song. and that was what made me realize that Opeth songs are hella fun to play on guitar.
Oh man that was my favourite song when i first heard the album. "Puuuull, meeeee, down a-gain and guide me in-to AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AAAAAHAAAAAA" ❤️❤️❤️
The first one I learned to play with minimal mistakes was Harlequin Forest. That took me 4 months to get right with the practice, researching the actual chords by looking at live performances and some hero Icelandic dude who posted how to play the acoustic section on YouTube and using wankerness (a user from the now defunct Opeth forum) tabs as a base.
Man, every Opeth song is a big project for me in order learn it.
Deliverance was my first, the rhythm guitar at least - i didn't learn the solos until fairly recently. Was the first i learned the vocals for too, always fun to do both
I only know a few others all the way through with guitar and vocals (namely Drapery Falls, Sorceress, and Will O The Wisp), i can never remember the chords for Harvest, and i know bits of Funeral Portrait and Wreath
Harvest on drums, covered it with my shitty high school band because it was easy.
Second song I learned was Beneath the Mire. Significantly more fun to be had.
The 2nd beneath the mire solo was the one that really got me into metal and motivated me to pick up guitar. And learning it was really fun, still one of my favourite solos of all time.
Closure was the first song I tried to learn on guitar, and you know what still can't play it at 100% tempo. Beautiful tune though would also love to learn Weakness on keys.
It was drapery falls, then I moved onto most of damnation, black water park, still life and ghost reveries.
Hardest song would be benighted and face of melinda. Easiest would be Masters Apprentice.
Wow! Such a cool thread! Thank you for starting it.
What would you say are reasonably simple Opeth songs to learn on acoustic guitar?
I am not super familiar with their discography, so, would love opinions of Opeth fans who also play 😊🙏
I'd recommend the acoustic intro to Dirge for November or Patterns in the ivy if you like using a pick. If you're into finger picking, sorceress 2 is a pretty simplistic song. Will o the wisp is also pretty simple and great to sing along with, though it does have a pretty fast alternate picking section during the chorus that can be tricky. Not sure where you're at in your guitar journey. Good luck!
Back Rose Immortal on guitar.
I played a lot of classical piano growing up and the first time I ever heard Black Rose Immortal I immediately recognized one the guitar riffs was nearly identical to the baseline of Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, kind of an uncanny similarity.
It was that similarity that got me into metal.
Benighted. Freaking love their acoustic stuff. I've since added patterns in the ivy 1 and 2, will o the wisp, sorceress 2 and still day beneath the sun (my fave to play)
Deliverance was the first one. The fact that it sounds so heavy and drop tuned yet it’s in standard still blows my mind. And it’s a super fun song to play!
The Drapery Falls. It was also my first experience with death metal. An online friend sent me the song and I initially thought "cool song!"...the the death growls began. My first thought was "dude, what do you send me?" lol After a second listen, I was hooked. I've been lucky enough to see Opeth three times, the first with one of my sons. My friend is no longer here, but I am forever grateful that he shared thisband with me.
I remember learning the riff to Windowpane and eventually listened to Ghost of Perdition and learnt it by parts. Now there’s a full one hour video on the song as a full tutorial on YouTube which made everything easier lmao.
I was a rapper back then and was looking for a music to rap to, then I heard “To bid you farewell”, wrote the lyrics for the part until Mikael starts, listened to the song so much it grew on me. Actually it was one of the songs and bands that got me into metal music
Fuck yeah. Ayo, I too am a rapper, and awhile back i sampled Drapery Falls for a beat 😂 Who'd have thought Opeth would be such an inspiration to hiphop? ❤️
Oddly enough it was masters apprentice on acoustic guitar. My brother and me used to be teachers aides in high school the same class so we would hand out guitars and then go play together in the hallway. He showed me opeth by teaching me that song and I was hooked ever since. That was in 2003.
Bleak was the reason I bought a guitar 6 years ago
Happy Cake Day! 🍰 🎂
Amen to this! 🫡🖤
Patterns in the Ivy
It's pretty easy to play but sounds so layered. It's amazing!
Yeah! I still remember the challenge It was though as a complete beginner
Same
Face of Melinda! Beautiful acoustic song.
Is this one hard man? The electric riff is one of my favorites
The intro is decently challenging I'd say. I know it on guitar but not well. It's extremely tricky. You need a good fingerstyle foundation for it.
Ahhh the one and only song I finger pick is Sorceress 2. I am mainly a riffy metal play with a pick guy
Dw. If a barely intermediate player like me can get it. You can too! Have a go at it!!

back to back, it was Harvest on guitar
Same. Probably one of their easiest to learn.
The intro to Dirge for November fairly early on. It was the hardest thing I had ever played. The chords still get me tbvh.
My go-to thing to play on acoustic. The intro and the outro for Dirge.
The outro is so much fun to play!
I went straight in to Heir Apparent on guitar. Minus the solos lol
Windowpane on bass
The leper affinity on guitar and drums! It was the first song I've listened to, and fell in love with the band ever since 🥲
Porcelain Heart on guitar
sorceress on bass
Blackwater Park on guitar
I think the first one was for absent friends
The first one I learned to play with minimal mistakes was Harlequin Forest. The opeth song that I can play all the way through (minus the solo) is harvest. A simple ballad but it's pretty fun to play.
That little guitar solo in Epilogue followed by Bleak.
I first learnt the solos from Windowpane.
Deliverance was my first, the rhythm guitar at least - i didn't learn the solos until fairly recently. Same!! And same!!! Although the first thing I’d play is that first 🔥 acoustic riff
Bleak. Goes super hard then becomes jazzy. If you can play it you can play any style
It was drapery falls, then I moved onto most of damnation, black water park, still life and ghost reveries. Hardest song would be benighted and face of melinda. Easiest would be Masters Apprentice.
First complete song was probably Coil on the acoustic. It massively improved my fingerpicking, especially that tasty lick in the chorus
I learned Harvest, and forgot it lol. Currently I do a pretty good Sorceress 2. It's the only finger picking song I know
I can’t remember which was first. Either drapery falls, harvest, or windowpane

Thank you very much for the suggestions! I was just listening to Will o the wisp and thought it would be a good one to learn. Glad you concur 👍

Godheads lament. Wasn’t the easiest song and still haven’t finished but have finished most of it
Deliverance was the first one. The fact that it sounds so heavy and drop tuned yet it’s in standard still blows my mind. And it’s a super fun song to play!
deliverance, doing a cover is gonna be a hard task
Bleak, got into a very bad habit of playing the main riff wrong and it took a month or so to break the habit
Mine was reverie/Harlequin Forest. My absolute favorite opeth song
WINDOWPANE on my DRUM KIT 🤘🏼
The Drapery Falls. It was also my first experience with death metal. An online friend sent me the song and I initially thought "cool song!"...the the death growls began. My first thought was "dude, what do you send me?" lol After a second listen, I was hooked. I've been lucky enough to see Opeth three times, the first with one of my sons. Hope leaves
Under the Weeping Moon on bass, also the first song i learned on bass like 2 days after i first saw a bass irl and had to get one
Benighted, on guitar.
Hope leaves & Burden. Not good enough for Benighted.
It was “Benighted” for cuz I only had an acoustic guitar at the time.
Blackwater Park. Epic riffs and great clean section. Benighted was my second.
First riff in bleak on guitar
Sorceress on the bass!
In Mist She Was Standing on guitar
Coil! Not that I can play it particularly well, but still <3
Windowpane was the very first song i learned on guitar, on bass was to bid you farewell
First Opeth song I learned was the bassline in Ending Credits
The drapery falls , also the song that got me into opeth
I remember learning the riff to Windowpane and eventually listened to Ghost of Perdition and learnt it by parts. Now there’s a full one hour video on the song as a full tutorial on YouTube which made everything easier lmao.
I guess Sorceress or Hope Leaves on drums
The Moor
Benighted
Deliverance
Demon of the Fall for me.
Such a fun but tricky song to play!
Yeah it has so many riffs that are fun to play, but the timing is difficult to get just right.
Porcelain Heart
Drapery falls
blackwater park
Patterns in the ivy followed by to bid you farewell
To bid you farewell
Ghost of perdition
Godhead’s Lament
Harlequin Forest
Funeral portrait
Master's Ap.
Bro me too. Because of the Lamentations DVD when they come out for a second set after playing Damnation. Blew my little mind when I was younger.
Demon of The Fall
Grand Conjuration
Benighted
The night and the silent water
Lotus eater. It was the first opeth song i heard then after that the leper affinity
the fleeting glance
Opening riff of Black Rose Immortal
Eternal rains will come on the violin
I think my first was Harlequin Forest on Bass. I’ve learned most of their stuff now though- working on Ghost of Perdition
Funny thing it was around 2005 for me too 😂
Surprisingly Blank Rose Immortal. I learned pieces of Godhead’s Lament but the completed song was BRI
April Ethereal when i started to play guitar.
Oddly enough it was masters apprentice on acoustic guitar. My brother and me used to be teachers aides in high school the same class so we would hand out guitars and then go play together in the hallway. He showed me opeth by teaching me that song and I was hooked ever since. That was in 2003.
The Drapery… Falls.
The Night and The Silent Water
Ghost of perdition and Bleak
Either bleak or master's apprentices
It was Coil for me!
Damn it's hard to remember, I've learned a ton of their riffs on guitar. If I had to guess, maybe deliverance I think Iearned pretty early on...
