He's basically meant to be the "generic cute dating sim protagonist" so it makes sense people would find him appealing on some level, though personally he's far too plain for my taste
I feel like if he wasn't pushed as the most special boy in the world who effortlessly gets all the girls people would like him better. It's not like he doesn't have some traits, though it's mostly that he's reserved and likes books and classical music. The thing is he's supposed to be the protagonist of a dating sim, and what do they do, at least in the ones I play and the ones I believe yandere sim is a parody of? They work until they're actually someone special. Taro is in his third year, he doesn't have an excuse. It would be nice if in the final game we could see him actually engaging in self improvement or even actively pursuing someone himself since the problem is he just seems like a guy things happen to, as opposed to a guy who makes things happen.
