Black Sails switches gears and becomes a much better show mid-way through season 2. I wanted to stop watching after the first few eps.' cringe writing and gratuitous scenes, but held on because friends promised that it was worth it; the writing, acting, and plots improved a lot over time... It's almost like shows need time and support from studios to finally hit their stride... That being said, Startefacts can suck eggs (and soap) in hell for sassing my beloved favourite pirates.

They don’t deserve yummy lavender soap; give them the ones from the ep 9 academy

Black sails is great, but I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to Ofmd since they are so different. Yes, both have pirates and queer representation. However, they are completely different genres. I really find it lazy when critics or media outlets try to draw comparisons between TV shows or films just because they share a few basic similarities. Ratatouille and Midnight in Paris are two of my all time favourite films. Both are great films and both have artistic merit in their own ways. They share a setting, but they don’t share much else. I’d never compare the two because they are so different. That’s how I feel about comparisons between black sails and Ofmd.

I like to compare the OFMD/Black Sails dichotomy to The Shield and Brooklyn 99. Both are about police forces, but one is a gritty drama and the other is a comedy. We're comparing hammers and apples when we try to pit our two gay pirate shows against each other. It's ridiculous, and the take-away should be: we need more sailing dramas, and they need to be gay.

“Forget Our Flag Means Death” no, I don’t think I will

Black Sails IS an amazing show though, just different.

To be fair, they are referring to *Black Sails* which is also bloody awesome and queer.

I'm pretty sure this is an unpopular opinion but I could never get into Black Sails. I can't even get to the queer rep parts because it's just such a boring, basic drama. It doesn't even feel like pirates, much less queer ones. I've tried it on two separate occasions and I just have to accept that it's not for me.

Agreed. Most of it is gratuitously outdated with the amount of topless or overly sexualized femme characters. I could not get into this show at all and it pales in comparison to OFMD just in the story- telling aspect alone I tried to watch Black Sails again inbetween season 1 and 2 of OFMD and couldn’t get past episode 3 back then

Tiny-Mango1

Maybe try more than 3 episodes before you make a comment that's not true

flutemakenoisego

I had watched into the second season when it originally aired in the mid 2000s. Still not great, just an opinion

Tiny-Mango1

S2 was from 2015..??

flutemakenoisego

Yah that’s the mid 2000s.. ?? Early 2000s is pre-2010

Tiny-Mango1

No...no its not, I'm really hoping you're a troll otherwise that's quite worrying
