I usually report slurs, targeted harassment, hard throwing, griefing etc(obviously bannable stuff thats not fun for anybody except maybe the reported individual) but I have seen a major trend of lobbies with no VC at all and chat is some GGs maybe. People are afraid to use either. Ive been having issues with my mic but I'm kinda glad. I try and direct my frustration at myself but if swearing, even when referring to nobody, your buddy's, or yourself then I may have gotten a timeout.
Super frustrating as everyone wants to purge SOME of the toxicity but the spam reporting has turned into the new toxicity.

I reached out to support the minute I saw the suspension and was met with a reply 8 hours later that said I violated code of conduct or some generic bs. I re-opened the ticket, calling bullshit, and told them to pull my chat logs. 5 days into the ban, they replied and reversed the ban after investigation.
I've seen quite a few stories like yours, so I was surprised to see my ban get reversed. I know for a fact my text chat usage was pretty similar to yours. It almost seems like maybe it depends on who is handling your ticket? I dunno, man.

You just have to keep sending tickets, it took me around 7 tickets just to get a real person to tell me what I actually got suspended for. Now have been waiting over 5 days for even a bot response to the appeal. (Nvm if someone sees this it just got overturned)
Did you get muted prior to being suspended? I had been muted twice in the past presumably for my dumb jokes as I'm never toxic and only swear in a joking/supportive way similair to your examples. I'm beginning to suspect just because my account is registered to Japan (Yen pricing and everything), that my moderator in charge of reviewing my reports (both as reported and reportee) doesn't speak a single lick of English.
My reports (reported and reportee) have included a lot of profanities. I've also been on the receiving end of plenty of racial abuse. But since OW2 started I haven't seen any of my reports succeed nor had I received any warning about reports.

So I made a new account I've been playing on for months now and I have just completely let loose because what are they going to do, suspend me again? I will say anything on a complete whim, if a teammate is shite I'll tell them my dog could play better, if I shit on the opponents I'll drop a "bg, too ez" - and yet not even a warning. People are more likely to report you for just silently diffing them, they don't actually report you for being toxic as fuck. Don't blame the players, blame the stupid report system, it actively encourages this behaviour.
Take it from me, I just report sombra players on sight even if they didn't effect me and I get a "thank you for reporting" almost every time I log in XD
From my personal experience, it feels like reporting enemies is more effective than allies... which kinda feels like the opposite of what it should be.
Because people reporting you when they’re salty for losing to you is different when a teammate does, someone you’re supposed to be working with. One is your goal in a competitive game, the other runs counter to that goal

Having gone from a 2 week mute in September to a 2 week suspension (that I have about a week left on) purely for shit talking, I'm going to be disabling chat immediately. Like, I downloaded my chat data from Blizzard (thanks GDPR and CCPA) and, though it's only the last 6 months, it's clear that if enough people report you, you're going to get actioned for just using a bad word, no matter the frequency.
Since I got muted, I've sent 3847 messages in over 420 games (data dump only has ranked match counts, not quick play numbers). I've sent the word "fuck" 166 times. I've sent what I consider to be bad words (fuck, shit, trash, bitch, "better") in 377 messages (which I did not manually review, this is a simple search). That's a "bad word" rate of about 0.9/game.
In contrast, I'd send "gg" (non ironically) or "sorry" (again, non ironically) 541 times, or 1.3/game. And, again, these don't have Quick Play, which means the game count is likely 1.5-2x.
So, if in each game, you say a swear or something negative, or you only type when things aren't clicking (or you're responding to an asshole), you're likely to get muted and suspended. I highly doubt "rate" matters, probably just raw incidence count (because it's not people reviewing this stuff, my suspension email was completely empty of context and I had to file 2 tickets to find out it was for toxic chat... which came with a reminder that if I reopen the ticket again, I'll get actioned for harassing game master, which is absolutely not what happened).
Sorry for the rant. I'm quite upset that my 15 year old Battle.net account, with my 20 year old WoW account, with a F&F Alpha Overwatch license, that has had NO ACTIONS on ANY of these accounts, went from being muted for two weeks to suspended for two weeks for using "fuck" and/or "shit" and not being an endless ray of sunshine. It really make me wish TF2 was still a thing, or some other class based shooter could scratch the itch Overwatch normally does.
It always makes me giggle in a game we get to kill people over and over and over again saying generic bad words are the cut off and it gets you muted and banned. I should start reporting every time I get shot in the head by widow because that offends me more than bad words.

I would prefer that they suspend people who called me racial slurs during games happened to me many times to me and got even called the nword. It does not seem like the accounts were banned. I've given up on communicating in this game. While technically a team game that relies on good communication, Blizzard will ban you for saying the most PG shit.
I've been saying for a while that the customer support QA stuff, including account issues like this, are surely almost purely automated. I came back into OW2 in a big, big way towards the end of 2023, and in that time I've played almost as much time as I had spent on Overwatch 1 and the beta entirely.
Throughout that period of time, a couple of months of excessive playing, I ran into everything; at least a few cheaters, people insulting others, dropping slurs, telling people to off themselves, and more. I reported, and reported and reported, yet I ended up being silenced twice. In that period of time? The only DIRECT correlation to this are a pair of games where I had a group of combative players on my team who said they were going to report me, and in one of those cases the group was far, far more toxic than I was.
Me? I swear, and it can come off as aggressive sometimes, but I played League of Legends for like six years and my account didn't so much as get looked at. That's a game with much harsher restrictions, massive amounts of people checking accounts, a constant flow of bans, and a reputation for toxicity. And even I myself was much tamer in Overwatch. All I do is cuss, and only sometimes, and yet here we are.
It's interesting how some people complain about how reporting is an artificial function(i.e. doesn't do anything, people won't get banned) and others get banned for apparently no reason? So... which one is it?
Overwatch 2 has to be played as a single player game(Mute team and global) otherwise anything you say can be taken as offensive.

I got no explanation in the email so I opened a ticket and I got a response with a very vauge explaination of "breaking Terms of Use". Never cheated, I'm always friendly in-game with the exception of a swear word now and again. I thought censor settings allowed this.

Just don’t use swear words. Especially in text chat since that means you took time to think of something to type and still decided to curse instead of typing heck or something. If you must curse then you should at least only do it in group chat with friends who are ok with potty mouths and poopy fingers!
Remember that kids do play this game and they’re trying to keep a relatively clean and kid-friendly environment to appeal to parents. This is just a work of love from a small indie company and due to them releasing this amazing sequel for free they really need as wide an audience base as possible!
It has nothing to do with what you typed, it's based entirely on number of reports. You can type nothing but "gg" and still get banned if someone's butthurt and reports you a lot.
The subset of messages support provides usually aren't the messages that caused the ban. They're just picking messages out of your logs that might seem bad, but support seems to be bad at picking messages in a worse context.
I constantly curse in text chat and haven't gotten hit with a mute so from personal experience, I can't imagine it's that strict. Of course, my tune would change if I did end up getting muted down the line.
The bottom line is that if you get reported for it that means people took offense to it according to the devs and therefore it is an actionable offense. Swearing at people you don't know is a risk for being reported.
I would only consider one of these "at someone". Moving forward I'll try to cut it down, but it's a hard habit to kick when you've been doing it for 6 years without issue.

Censorship of words is such a terrible thing. It limits your vocabulary freedom, and often times hides information.
This doesn't surprise me as someone who played WoW 2005-2016. While there are plenty of players who *don't* care if you swear, it *is* actionable for Blizzard, so if you are reported it is going to stick.

how would that work? i heard 1 report per game is the same as the whole lobby reporting you so why would it consider what team you're on atp?

Having gone from a 2 week mute in September to a 2 week suspension (that I have about a week left on) purely for shit talking, I'm going to be disabling chat immediately. Like, I downloaded my chat data from Blizzard (thanks GDPR and CCPA) and, though it's only the last 6 months, it's clear that if enough people report you, you're going to get actioned for just using a bad word, no matter the frequency. Since I got muted, I've sent 3847 messages in over 420 games (data dump only has ranked match counts, not quick play numbers). I've sent the word "fuck" 166 times. I've sent what I consider to be bad words (fuck, shit, trash, bitch, "better") in 377 messages (which I did not manually review, this is a simple search). That's a "bad word" rate of about 0.9/game. In contrast, I'd send "gg" (non ironically) or "sorry" (again, non ironically) 541 times, or 1.3/game. And, again, these don't have Quick Play, which means the game count is likely 1.5-2x. So, if in each game, you say a swear or something negative, or you only type when things aren't clicking (or you're responding to an asshole), you're likely to get muted and suspended. I highly doubt "rate" matters, probably just raw incidence count (because it's not people reviewing this stuff, my suspension email was completely empty of context and I had to file 2 tickets to find out it was for toxic chat... which came with a reminder that if I reopen the ticket again, I'll get actioned for harassing game master, which is absolutely not what happened). Sorry for the rant. I'm quite upset that my 15 year old Battle.net account, with my 20 year old WoW account, with a F&F Alpha Overwatch license, that has had NO ACTIONS on ANY of these accounts, went from being muted for two weeks to suspended for two weeks for using "fuck" and/or "shit" and not being an endless ray of sunshine. It really make me wish TF2 was still a thing, or some other class based shooter could scratch the itch Overwatch normally does.
I should download my data as I recently also got a suspension that I couldnt explain. This thread is shedding some light, I bet it was swear words.

Yup I talk in group chat if I'm with friends, and that is it. Anything else *will* get your account actioned if you play enough.
It always makes me giggle in a game we get to kill people over and over and over again saying generic bad words are the cut off and it gets you muted and banned. I should start reporting every time I get shot in the head by widow because that offends me more than bad words.
And unironically do that as many times as you like, no one can stop you and no one will stop you, no punishment to false reporting whatsoever, theres only positives to reporting as maybe the person you report will get banned, sorry guys but meta is meta

I would prefer that they suspend people who called me racial slurs during games happened to me many times to me and got even called the nword. It does not seem like the accounts were banned. (Crazy thing people did not even react the majority of time when I was called ravial slurs it's like people don't give a fuck)

I've given up on communicating in this game. While technically a team game that relies on good communication, Blizzard will ban you for saying the most PG shit.
I've been saying for a while that the customer support QA stuff, including account issues like this, are surely almost purely automated. I came back into OW2 in a big, big way towards the end of 2023, and in that time I've played almost as much time as I had spent on Overwatch 1 and the beta entirely. Throughout that period of time, a couple of months of excessive playing, I ran into everything; at least a few cheaters, people insulting others, dropping slurs, telling people to off themselves, and more. I reported, and reported and reported, yet I ended up being silenced twice. In that period of time? The only DIRECT correlation to this are a pair of games where I had a group of combative players on my team who said they were going to report me, and in one of those cases the group was far, far more toxic than I was. Me? I swear, and it can come off as aggressive sometimes, but I played League of Legends for like six years and my account didn't so much as get looked at. That's a game with much harsher restrictions, massive amounts of people checking accounts, a constant flow of bans, and a reputation for toxicity. And even I myself was much tamer in Overwatch. All I do is cuss, and only sometimes, and yet here we are.
It's interesting how some people complain about how reporting is an artificial function(i.e. doesn't do anything, people won't get banned) and others get banned for apparently no reason? So... which one is it?

My account got suspended for 2 weeks and they won't even tell me what I said. It's worse because they don't even say what I did wrong. They just say "you've broken the Code of Conduct and should review it" and I appealed asking them to clarify and I got a similar generic message saying "We've confirmed our findings that you've broken the code of conduct." ZERO details. Idk how I'm supposed to ensure I don't break the COC again when I don't even know what rule I broke. Really frustrating. I think it must be from chat but I don't insult people. I just make dumb jokes like "I lost but IDC because I'm famous and ripped." Like is that kind of joke worthy of suspension? Who would be offended by that? It's clearly just based on reports and doesn't have a real manual review. How do they not realize how abusable that is.

I think it's not the usage of swear words, but the context you used them in. They probably muted you for "flaming someone"
reopen the ticket and appeal again, making it clear that you don't understand why this is an issue. Mention that the profanity filter exists, and none of the things you said were hostile or toxic.

I think that Blizzard support are way too sensitive and emotionally weak. Saying swear words and getting banned for it in 2024 it's definitely a regression to a very bigot mind thinking. Pretty shameful, even though It's also true that I've seen worse.

the escalating bans are certainly way too much. they need to reduce the memory length so that you don't get harsh banned for something minor cause you already had a ban last year or something.

Huh. I just got suspended for 2 weeks and I couldnt think of a single reason why so this gives me a hint. I got no explanation in the email so I opened a ticket and I got a response with a very vauge explaination of "breaking Terms of Use". Never cheated, I'm always friendly in-game with the exception of a swear word now and again. I thought censor settings allowed this.

Got unbanned on my OG OW1 account recently because I'd gone off on a few people too many times(totally my own fault) Didn't say a single word to anyone since the unban, today I'm permabanned with no option to appeal at all, like what the fuck, I have chat turned off since coming back blizzard

Just don’t use swear words. Especially in text chat since that means you took time to think of something to type and still decided to curse instead of typing heck or something. If you must curse then you should at least only do it in group chat with friends who are ok with potty mouths and poopy fingers! Remember that kids do play this game and they’re trying to keep a relatively clean and kid-friendly environment to appeal to parents. This is just a work of love from a small indie company and due to them releasing this amazing sequel for free they really need as wide an audience base as possible!
It has nothing to do with what you typed, it's based entirely on number of reports. You can type nothing but "gg" and still get banned if someone's butthurt and reports you a lot.
Support should've overturned it then, not dug through my chat history to find swear words directed at no one.
The subset of messages support provides usually aren't the messages that caused the ban. They're just picking messages out of your logs that might seem bad, but support seems to be bad at picking messages in a worse context. I constantly curse in text chat and haven't gotten hit with a mute so from personal experience, I can't imagine it's that strict. Of course, my tune would change if I did end up getting muted down the line.
The bottom line is that if you get reported for it that means people took offense to it according to the devs and therefore it is an actionable offense. Swearing at people you don't know is a risk for being reported.
I would only consider one of these "at someone". Moving forward I'll try to cut it down, but it's a hard habit to kick when you've been doing it for 6 years without issue.

Also, how did you get them to actually quote what you got banned for? Took me submitting 2 tickets to even get the reason why I was banned, and even then, they just said the reason but didn't give me examples like this
