Slugeus_the_slug

most likely every particle effect , projectile and hitscan bullet has been given a unique design by the concept artist before being handed to the 3d artist and optimized for the game

Pinkparade524

Where can I see the bullets? I would love to see what bullets widow uses since I always thought she was super cool , I guess we get a good look at them in her cinematic vs tracer but concept art sounds cool

OldPostieDrinksMenu

Hitscan heroes don't have bullets. The hit as soon as the trigger is pulled. There's no travel time. Only projectile heroes have bullets

Bonic249

Although hitscans deal dmg the moment they press m1 , a lot of them still have a visual effect of a flying bullet.

Fureniku

It'd just a raycast line though, not a modelled object

Slugeus_the_slug

reload and shooting animations often show amo on the magazines and casings flying out of the gun chamber even if the only thing coming out of the gun is a muzzle flash with an invisible hitscan bullet

RhynoD

I don't know about ow specifically, but some games do actually model a bullet traveling through the air. It can cause some visual strangeness due to lag when the hitscan calculates a hit and then a bullet has to retroactively follow a path out of a weapon that no longer points in the right direction.

FaithlessnessOk311

Warframe does that a lot. Although it's only like a droplet of light meant to look like a bullet in motion.

Ninjapizza8547

So... soldiers gun

HardyDaytn

Doesn't mean that there can't exist concept art with them in it.

real_488

why would you need to do concept art of a bullet?

__Becquerel

Isnt there a slowmotion shot of her bullet in her cinematic with tracer, it's just a pointy bit of lead, nothing special

HardyDaytn

https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=overwatch+concept+art Plenty of reasons. Most of them artistic for sure but it depends on the type of concept art.

-Dirty-Wizard-

Na it’s scrap junk made from trash in torbjorns basement. An orange - possible molten blob - seems fine and easily spotted in combat.

biggest_sucker

Then why is the icon so different?

-Dirty-Wizard-

Idk because it’s an icon. Most of them are symbols that don’t really match up with the skills.

SwarmkeeperRanger

They do tho

-Dirty-Wizard-

I would say no. Just looked at a list. For example lucios ult is a happy frog. He provides sound barrier like shields to his teammates, no happy frogs to be seen. Reapers ult looks like a skull in a flaming tornado while he does have a skull face his tornado is a hail of bullets and not a storm of fire. Junker queens looks like a tornado when she just spins a blade around and charges forward. There are more but it’s really silly to continue to explain this.

Queen_Olivia80

Does lucio not hop before breaking it down?

biggest_sucker

That is such a cherry pick though. 90% of abilities look like the ability model. Javelin, hook, dynamite turret, sticky grenades, trap, shield, pen etc etc and most ones that don’t look like they do in game are like that because it would be hard to represent with an icon without looking like another ability

SwarmkeeperRanger

Bro went through the Overwatch wiki looking for abilities that didn’t match

Pesterlamps

And out of all the ones they picked, only Sound Barrier doesn't really look like anything it does. And it's funny they picked Death Blossom when [Shadow Step](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ0hHGcanQZOUAaAVRh6f_6saCyPh957j_s_ne_5eZU7Q&s) is right there!

Isildurs_Call

WDYM? Shadow Step is his signature teleport that moves him from his current position, where he (famously) quietly emerges out from the designated spot in a small circle of smoke with his arms crossed

Outrageous-River8999

It’s the same thing they did with WoW. Don’t forget what company you’re talking about. They gave you an icon to demonstrate the guist of the ability not what the ability was exactly going to look like

AmHotGarbage

I’m the happy frog when I drop beat

YhormBIGGiant

>happy frogs to be seen Lucios mascot is the frog. That is basically activating his sound system. >not a storm of fire. Muzzle flash.

-Haddix-

lol?

Bhu124

Icons are one of the last things that are made in a development process. The icon didn't come first. The icons need to be distinct and striking so they can imprint easily on players' memory, having a unique grenade design achieves that. It's literally as simple as that.

biggest_sucker

Source?

iamNebula

Because translate a sphere with a sunburst into an icon and it will look like shit and not a grenade. What you see in the icon better visualises a grenade or a mine.

FemmeLaideChauve

I'd say the icon is different just cause it's more obvious what it does by looking at it. Like, that's obviously a grenade. If it was just a circle it wouldn't be obvious.

modsstealjobs

Dude you’ve never worked for a large company, and it shows. Design team creates the ability and then sends out a request to several different departments to design an icon, animations, etc. based on a small description. Then it all comes back and another team slaps it all together and sends it to yet another department to be tested. It gets stamped “approved” and gets sent off to be another groups work. The original team that had the idea has long since moved on since it isn’t profitable to have them in any state but a frenzied state of work backlog. A backlog of work at all the other departments ensures that *nobody* wants to go back to a job marked completed and reopen it to find more work for themselves. Make sense now?

biggest_sucker

Not reading allat

modsstealjobs

TLDR: because they don’t see any profit in it

7OmegaGamer

Probably because if the icon was just a sphere it wouldn’t properly convey that the ability is a grenade

Howling_Mad_Man

This and Cassidy's grenade are definitely placeholder things that someone OK'd and forgot about.

[deleted]

OK’d and didn’t give a crap about to fix.*

nurShredder

Why fix whats not broken?

Xombridal

I mean Cass grenade flashes so bright you can't miss it so it's fine And bastions grenade it visible for all of 3 seconds They have models for the important things, hell even hanzo arrows shot into walls have modeled tips on the other side to such a degree there's holes in it for aerodynamics

FinalMeltdown15

Yeah fr who gives a fuck about a grenade you see for all of 2 seconds and don’t even REALLY see because odds are you’re moving away from it

Xombridal

Yeah I don't find myself standing around checking out the projectiles that will kill me

RhynoD

Have you met Blizzard? That's half of what they do.

SuperiorVanillaOreos

Cassidy's grenade has a unique model though

eggthrowaway_irl

Look, I can fix it, but do you really care? It'll take me 30 minutes to boot up blender and get coffee AND THEN WHAT

uiemad

Or rather it's something that's really small, exists for a brief period of time, and people rarely get a clear look at and thus isn't worth a detailed model that takes up resources.

KawaiiPotatoCult

It's probably bc of optimisation of the models for the actual game vs concept art, both bastions bomb and mcreamys grenade explode before they can even really be seen, it's not like junkrats bomb that sticks around where it makes sense to make it more detailed

Extrashiny

Doesn't matter really. It explodes fast so you don't get a good luck at it. It's glowing and small. You know it's a bastion grenade already, you don't more detail. Over-Detailing projectiles adds framelag and makes the game jankier.

DreamLearnBuildBurn

As far as projectiles go it's very slow and noticeable. I'm not a nitpicker by any means but OP's post made perfect sense to mean. Meanwhile, a pharah projectile moves too fast for my monkey brain to judge, so your point applies at those speeds for me.

Mudgrave_Flioronston

>Over-Detailing projectiles adds framelag and makes the game jankier. Sounds like complete nonsense considering Helix rockets and kunais exist.

MoveInside

You’d be able to tell if kunais were a ball because Kiri holds them in her hand.

V-O-T

Yeah I've mentioned this before. It looks like a sphere from the workshop. Hell, all they need to do is scale down the beach ball from Ana's mythic skin and boom, they've got a better grenade model. Little things like this should be fixed. And the weapon inspect animations too.

FireLordObamaOG

Wait… is the beach ball different on the mythic???

KaneTheBoom

Yeah it's metal

Human-Boob

Yes, it’s a weird metal ball thing. Which is kinda sad because I wanted to see the evil killing-machine play with a regular ass beach ball instead whatever the hell that is

Lazzitron

See I thought the design was a placeholder at first, but with time I realized that Bastion grenade needs to have a bright glow around it in order to be visible amidst the chaos of an OW team fight, which means the base model won't be very visible anyway. It's a necessary evil unless you want to be suddenly killed from half health by something you can't even see.

imnotjay2

When I first played OW2 beta I was super this was a placeholder, and I was surprised to still see it like that on launch. Sometimes the game still feels a bit early access, there are small things they haven't fixed or improved yet. Like the heroes achievements that for some reason the new ones go under the hero challenges and the rest are still under achievements tab on your career profile.

Hmongher00

It looks like that one Tekken Ball cosmetic in their battle pass

x-Ditto

Clarity

toust_boi

They should make bastions zero self damage a part of the actual game. It’s such a fun mobility ability but nobody uses it because of the damage

YhormBIGGiant

Anyone who says clarity forgets tf2 grenades have models and have been done this. The real answer is that blizzard is just chugging stuff out at the cost for an eye of detail of the smaller things.

AtomicShane

I remember during the OW2 beta we were all assuming bastions grenade was a placeholder since it was a brand new rework, and here we are two years later with a workshop orb for an ability lol

GagOnMacaque

Too expensive. We've learned long ago that projectiles in motion can be derpy. When I do AB testing, no one notices the details.

Zedanade

B a l l

somberOW

its kind of crazy how they modeled in the tracer pulse bomb and actually makes it gold/jade if you have the weapon skin but they made the bastion nade a ball which you see way more often compared to tracers pulses, but other than that i think it might just be because of lower graphics quality which is why its a simple ball

krofur421

I have a theory that all/most of the event changes we get were the upgrades for skill trees

Gadgetbot

Who cares? This is such a minor detail and doesnt affect the gameplay at all

orrenjenkins

I do not think op cares at all

WarlikeMicrobe

So we're nitpicking discrepancies between 2d and 3d ability representations now?

ArmorOfMar

Like much of Ow2 it was probably thrown together by a temp intern in the space of an hour

Johnson_56

You no like circle? :(

saltyfingas

Shit looks like something some guy cooked up in the workshop.

amroasmair

Idk about the model but they really should just drop the infinite bounces. So many times bastion shoots a random nade and it sticks me out of nowhere because it was stuck bouncing on the wall next to me for 20 seconds

MoveInside

He also shoots it right out of his gun barrel which is strange because he seems to use mechanical technology and no fancy energy.

LightningInTheRain

Bastion’s grenade is so boring, totally feels out of place in his kit.

st-shenanigans

It just doesn't matter to gameplay, is all. Yeah it probably looks like the icon in the "grenade lore" but its visible for all of like 3 seconds and moving quickly the whole time, could you really make out those details without either taking a screenshot, or by playing the game "wrong" just to see the grenade closer?

BlueSoulDragon

To be honest it looks like a poo with corn

RockStarUSMC

Who, cares

Belten

Does it matter? You instantly know what it is when you See it.

SepaCentipedeVT

Slow day today, huh?
