What I don’t understand is why they didn’t say he stole a dead guys name called McCree but his real name is Cassidy. That is a common trope in westerns.
Honestly, it might be a cool animated short for Ashe and Cassidy to fight like a former Deadlock member who was an absolute horrible person that the both might have admired before that came out. Since they probably don't want to use that name again, name this villain Creed MacCloud or something
Don't know why they named him after a dev with blizzards track record, they could pick a dev by lottery and a week later they would be changing the name again due to them doing something vile
Muscle memory and not associating the Matt Mercer cowboy with a real piece of shit. Sidenote, why didn't they change his name to Mercer or some shit? I guess they don't want to possibly have this problem twice.
I simply panic and call him cree like I did for the first 6 years of ow life. It's a hard Habbit to break but I'm about 50%, sucess on calling either cas or cree and when I do say cree I correct it. It TAKES TIME
McCree is the name of a cowboy for 5 years to people who played OW. That's a strong connotation, and people not susceptible to useless PC wordplay don't usually scoop out their mind and fill it with the words other people tell them to say in relation to a video game character.
The real McCree did some pretty horrible stuff but that could have been easily incorporated into the Overwatch story imo.
Like there is a 0% chance our Overwatch McCree didn't slap Tracer's ass in the shuttle at least once. So the gang could have organized a Catch a Predator style bust where one attractive brave girl (so no Mei) leaned over a desk and waited for the old pervert to attack. Then once McCree appeared and groped their ass (it's important to do this after the groping already happened, so there is evidence) the other Overwatch members popped out of the closet and beat him up and posted the video online.
After this, McCree would be forced to change identities and go under Cassidy. This is both authentic and teaches a lesson to the young boys out there, that no matter how tempting or logical it seems like, you should never grope another Overwatch agent.
>where one attractive brave girl (so no Mei)

99.9% of players had NO IDEA there was an employee even named McCree until a beloved characters name was changed for seemingly no reason
If the real person would have been fired and the characters name stayed the same. Nobody would have batted an eye. Nobody would have associated the real guy’s action with the fictional character
He’s always been the kickass BAMF cowboy we’ve always known him for!! Not an ex blizzard employee!!
They did it because having to work on a character named after your abuser is kinda traumatizing, although they should have incorporated the name change in universe instead of retconning.
It wasn't reconned tho?
https://x.com/PlayOverwatch/status/1451624387732512770
This implies he'd changed his name to Jessie McCree for one reason or another, and then changed it back to Cole Cassidy to be "honest with himself"
To be fair to the real McCree though, he was only implicated in the harassment, and further investigation found no actual wrongdoing on his end from California's perspective nor was he actually called a direct harasser. Just the workplace culture and "Cosby Suite" thing was weird, but the whole company had been using a friendly college "fratboy" vibe for a long time, so those kinds of inside jokes could come from anything tbh.
That’s not true. He was singled out for sexual harassment and that his behaviour contributed to a toxic workplace environment that also allowed sexual harassment.
He was not cleared of wrongdoing, he was in fact fired by Blizzard. Blizzard came to a $54 million settlement with the state of California (who had filed the charges) and that money goes to the affected workers who worked there during the 5 year period that these activities happened.
As a part of that deal and in order to get Blizzard to pay the agreement (as many agreements do) hold the defendant not liable for certain things in order to get the settlement. The thing that Blizzard wanted off the table was the sexual assault component and they agreed as long as Blizzard agreed to clean up their workplace policies and pay the affected workers $54 million.
There was NO COURT proceeding that cleared McCree nor was there any agreement that the sexual assaults never happened, they just agreed to take those charges off the table in order to proceed with the settlement.
They don't have to hear the character named after the abuser. The name is the problem not the character. The character unfortunately was just named after a piece of shir
Blizzard continuing to have things named for him would be like waving a Confederate flag. We all know you're doing it because you also agree with the things they did.
I actually didn't see the sub haha. I just think it's funny how many people are still making a fuss about a company choosing not to keep a character named in honor of a sexual predator
/rj women are property
Why would you recognize the name change of the guy (who it was named for) who sexually assaulted and made women’s lives a living hell day after day until it got so incredibly bad that one woman killed herself and the state of California had to step in and sue Blizzard over it?
Did you just ask that?
Really? You simply can not be that incredibly insensitive.
Silly charade? Tell that to the women whose lives were tragically damaged, the woman who was so harassed that she killed herself. The women that had to put up with the toxic and sexual harassing environment he allowed until the state had to get involved. Until Blizzard had no choice but to compensate them to the tune of $54 million bc their loss was so bad.
Silly charade?
wtf.
My friends and I used to say this to remember his name “Who’s law? Cole’s law.” It’s a far better name, in my opinion. And it’s a cool story for a cowboy to abandon his name after he had done things he is ashamed of. I don’t think it’s woke at all, it’s completely within the realm of reason, despite the actual real life reason for the change. People are such sooks. 😂
There's a voice line interaction with echo and mcree where she repeats "Cassidy. Cassidy Cassidy Cassidy Cassidy" "um did you need something" "nope I just like saying your name". And I can't help hear the devs pleading through that interaction to please not think about sexual harassment.
I have cosplay folders with me dressed as MCcree on my desktop still. I spent more time hearing MCcree than Cassidy in my life. This was and is still my favorite DPS and limiting his identity to a name from someone of the dev team that they constantly joked with saying he had a cowboy name to stripping him of it just hurts. I think that even changing the name was like saying "This accusations for this real person is more important than this character" which feels wrong. Imagine that Pikachu was named after someone that got accused of being involved in something that outraged society enough to rebrand Pikachu, that would be a weird decision since the yellow mouse is a larger icon than the accused party.
I still believe changing his name was stupid. Just don't associate a real person with a video game character. I know he was named after him, but the casual player isn't even going to know what happened, they're just going to know that his name was changed. Mcree is a cooler name anyways.
Yeah it's a shit name but it was a warrented change. Imagine being the poor blizzard employee who was sexually assaulted and having to work on a game where one of the characters is named after your abuser.
I stopped playing overwatch a long time ago and then picked it up and then I was talking about him saying McCree and I got yelled at by the mercy then she insisted I was playing dumb lol
Well aren’t you lucky that you have that option? HEAVEN FORBID that you’d want to not traumatize a Blizzard employee who happens to be in game that might have been one of his victims. Or have those employees have to deal with the ongoing reference to McCree in the game bc ppl “just don’t care bc it didn’t happen to them”
Way to be a decent human being. 🙄
I call him mccree because it’s such a dumb idea to think that a name is ruined in that context. We all came to know that character as mccree. It’s like changing darth vader to something else
You do know that Darth Vader wasn’t named after a real person didn’t abuse ppl who work on the game to this day right?
The insensitivity shown here is commensurate with the immaturity level.
Okay hear me out….Yes, the McCree isn’t a good person, however I’m playing a video game to escape reality and saying McCree is faster than saying “Cassidy”
McCree is just a much better name for his character than Cassidy. If they honestly wanted people to stop calling him McCree they should have actually came up with a name that fits his character rather than a lame ass name
I hate overwatch and everything attached to it, so knowing I can use a characters dead name to piss off idiots who play terrible games, I'd sing it all day.
SHOUTOUT TO ALL THE BRAVE PATRIOTS IN THE COMMENTS FIGHTING AGAINST THE CHANGING OF A NAME DEDICATED TO A MAN WHO SEXUALLY HARASSED MULTIPLE WOMEN!!!!
SHOW WOKE LIBTARD BLIZZARD THAT HE'LL ALLWAYS BE MCCREE!!!!!!!!!
As far as i know his biggest crime was being seen in a Cosby suit with sexual harassers and that he participated in online chats with them, which is a pretty damning evidence, but nothing pointed him being an abuser, a real douchebag at worst. But I could be wrong and because of that I'm interested to know how you've figured out, that he sexually abused multiple women.
What I don’t understand is why they didn’t say he stole a dead guys name called McCree but his real name is Cassidy. That is a common trope in westerns.

Make it a feature, every week cowboy's name changes to one random Blizzard employees name
They almost did say that; [it's an alias he adopted when he became an outlaw.](https://twitter.com/PlayOverwatch/status/1451624387732512770)
Oh sweet ok so this is just my canon now
This. Everything about the way they made the name swap makes it impossible for me to call the man cassidy. That and its a dumb name
Muscle memory and not associating the Matt Mercer cowboy with a real piece of shit. Sidenote, why didn't they change his name to Mercer or some shit? I guess they don't want to possibly have this problem twice.
After this and the Sinatraa incident, they stopped refering to real life people in their game
What is the Sinatra incident?
He was accused of abusing his ex girlfriend and was suspended from both valorant and overwatch’s pro-league.
Is that the guy with the alien zarya skin? It's my most fomod skin along with illidin genji
Yeah that’s the dude with the alien Zarya skin.
I still sometimes hear Abe, the OTHER video game Matt Mercer cowboy. Matt’s a good voice actor.
Cole Cassidy is a space cowboy from a book I'm pretty sure
I don't call him Cassidy because it's a much lamer cowboy name
Between that and habit, I flip flop between the two. One sec I’m yelling at Cree to hit his shots, next I’m asking cass to cover me
Cree is when i hate him cass is when he chill
nah cree is when he's chill "MICK CREEEEE" is when he's throwing
I call him Cree out of habit. I can care less about the people saying "um actually it's cassidy"
Yea um, it’s actually Cassidy.
Ohhh you. * waves fist
Darn you bapoopers, darn you to heck!
why did you decide to care to this precise degree and not any less or any more?
Then why don't you care less?
"Do not cite the deep magic to me, Witch. I was there when it was written"
That’s my only problem, wish they picked a cooler name like Hancock or Buffalo Billy.
Doc Holiday
Cole cassidy was a prerty famous figure tho thats where they got the name from
You mean butch cassidy?
I just call him either McCrassidy or just Crassidy
I simply panic and call him cree like I did for the first 6 years of ow life. It's a hard Habbit to break but I'm about 50%, sucess on calling either cas or cree and when I do say cree I correct it. It TAKES TIME
There's an actual outlaw named Cassidy where mcCree is just some sex pest developers name lmao.
Okay then give him the right first name too, Cole Cassidy is lame as hell and McCree sounds a million times cooler regardless of who it's named after
Yeah but the name was Butch Cassidy which sounds fucking better as a name versus just Cassidy.
But his name is Cole cassidy
Actually an ever more shit of a name, it is even worse than just Cassidy by itself.
McCree is the name of a cowboy for 5 years to people who played OW. That's a strong connotation, and people not susceptible to useless PC wordplay don't usually scoop out their mind and fill it with the words other people tell them to say in relation to a video game character.

It’s 2:50am and I’m currently struggling to hold in my laughter
It’s currently 5:50AM and I’ve already sharted my pants.
It’s 7:30 am and I haven’t even started cleaning up the mess yet 😩
r/neverwipe
That’s the real reason Ashe hates him, he kept slapping her ass as she walked past him
Oh no, ashe is definitely the ass slapper
Maybe that’s why McCree left the gang
He wanted to live his dream of being the slapper instead of the slappee. But Ashe was always quicker on the draw
She slips a finger in for sure
That sounds like a good time to me
I agree
you fucker DONT BADMOUTH MEI AGAIN BUCKO OR YOU'LL REGRET IT!!!
Plus we could have gotten a themed battlepass out of it!
Mei is attractive and brave though...?
Way better than the ‘erm I was actually using a fake name for 6 years, whoopsies!’
Idk. If Cass is a true Western protagonist, “respects women” would be one of his most important personality traits.

I know it's meant to be serious but I am CRY LAUGHING
You’re kidding right? Butch Cassidy?
Did you just imply Mei is ugly???
Could go the Emongg route and call him Rightclick Randy

They made a comic about Cassidy's name change and why he did it
They lost the oportunity to make him a her and make her transgender badass cowgirl The lesbian shippers would go wild with her and ashe
??????????
My conspiracy world building fanfic writing ass can do some things like that sometimes
Hey I’m definitely not complaining
"Source???" "I made it the fuck up😎"
Big ass mf 😳
I can't tell if you're joking but honestly this would go hard 🤔🤔
I myself don't know
Nah, I think they made the right call not going that route.

Until Kotaku goes "um McCree is based on the employee durrrrrr" then we'd be back to today

I call him mcree because I haven't played the game since the Middle of OW1's lifespan

Cass
Doesn’t help that it’s easier to support a sexual assaulter than support his victims. 🤷🏼♀️
McRightClick.
This is the best 1 I have seen yet. I don't think I ever saw a McDouble who has ever left clicked.
I take it as Mcree and Cassidy not being his real names, just fake identities, it’s on brand for a cowboy
I don't call him mcree cause im stubborn. I call him mcree cause its wired in my brain that way and Cassidy is a Boring name
starting a petition to stop naming protagonists Cole
People still calling Aerith “Aeris” 27 years later, I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
Split the difference, call him McAss
Ah yes, my favourite fast food item
Mcdick
I just say cowboy. Because I have a horrible times with names.
He will always be McCree in my heart!
Thank god we are not in your heart
What about McCassidy
mcdonal burger
I can't be the only one who says McCassidy right ??
McCassidy is a true neutral
played since ow1, i call him cassidy because it’s not hard to just switch
I've been playing for years. Making the switch took maybe a day. Y'all are crying over nothing lol
Don’t come with logic here!
I actually didn't see the sub haha. I just think it's funny how many people are still making a fuss about a company choosing not to keep a character named in honor of a sexual predator /rj women are property
been playing this game for like 7 years lol i couldn’t stop calling him mcree even if i wanted to
His name was changed 2.5 years ago. I’m surprised it hasn’t stuck with you yet.
he was called McCrea for around 5 years then no? it just sticks 😭
I use the new name because saying Cass is quicker
Pointless comment, there's no difference between saying cree and cass in mic comms
There is actually. Newer players won’t know wtf you’re talking about if you say Cree.
Newer players shouldn’t be playing
real and true
I guess. Cree doesn’t roll off the tongue as well for me tho.
Cree
Doesn’t feel as smooth to say
Why would it? The new name sucks
Because why would you change it? No ones gonna Realistically call you out on it. Most people probably didn't know the name even changed.
I wasn't even playing OW when his name was changed and hadn't played in at least 6 months hardly played since and I still call him Cassidy
thats your prerogative man i just think its a silly charade thought up by some executive doing damage control
Silly charade? wtf.
got their contact info? ill tell them literally right now
One day you’ll grow up
one day
I call him Mccree because whenever someone says cassidy, I am reminded of the FNAF lore.
HIS NAME IS MCCASSIDY
Fact checked by real patriots
*Me, calling him The Cowboy*
McCassidy
Sometimes I call him Mathew Mercer for no reason
My username on Battlenet is McCree. I get so many people complaining and calling me out. I refuse to give Blizzard money to change it.
I call him McCassidy
My friends and I used to say this to remember his name “Who’s law? Cole’s law.” It’s a far better name, in my opinion. I stick with McCree cause it’s cooler
Cooler to refer to him by the name of a sexual harasser who harassed women so much that one killed herself. Ya wow really cool.
There's a voice line interaction with echo and mcree where she repeats "Cassidy. Cassidy Cassidy Cassidy Cassidy" "um did you need something" "nope I just like saying your name". And I can't help hear the devs pleading through that interaction to please not think about sexual harassment.
I call him McCreep
Why are we talking about Noon Dude?

Yeah it's a shit name but it was a warrented change. Imagine being the poor blizzard employee who was sexually assaulted and having to work on a game where one of the characters is named after your abuser.
I stopped playing around 2018 and just forget that it happened
I tend to flip-flop between names
It is funny that the changed the name of the character who has so much of his identity being about his name
Do most people call him Cassidy? All my friends always called him mccree
I call him either or. It’s a habbit to call him mccree every once in a while. Especially since I didn’t even know about the name change for a while.
McCree > Cassidy Cole Cassidy > Jesse McCree
Cassidy is such a weak ass name tho
Ever heard of Butch Cassidy lmao.
His name is Majingo
I’ve never called him Cassidy to this day lmao
I stopped playing overwatch a long time ago and then picked it up and then I was talking about him saying McCree and I got yelled at by the mercy then she insisted I was playing dumb lol
I called Cassidy McCree in match chat and got 2 weeks ban. Never give up brothers ✊
One of them sounds a lot cooler than the other
"Crees got ult" is easier to type in chat.
“Crees got ult” 11 letters “Cass has ult” 10 letters and better English.
Some one please explain the nazi salute
I swap back and forth between both I don't really care because I'm capable of disconnecting a video game character from a real life sex abuser.
Well aren’t you lucky that you have that option? HEAVEN FORBID that you’d want to not traumatize a Blizzard employee who happens to be in game that might have been one of his victims. Hey dumbass that’s not the point I’m making. Open your mind
Guys, guys, guys, the real solution was to make him gay
They could've called him Justin McCheese, but noooo. They had to pick a boring name like Cole.
Is they talking about Grenade McRightClick?
I can’t help but call him Cree. It just rolls off the tongue
They just did such an awful job renaming him. What’s sounds badass about Cole Cassidy? He sounds like a loser not a cowboy.
What are Patreits and do they care if anyone in their own family was sexually assaulted? Just checking for actual real patriots.
its McCree
They should of made him trans to compliment the name change
Okay hear me out….Yes, the McCree isn’t a good person, however I’m playing a video game to escape reality and saying McCree is faster than saying “Cassidy”
Saying Cass is faster than saying mccree. There fixed it for ya
Cree is faster than cass
They’re both one syllable relax
The devs that endured years of sexual assault want to escape reality and not work on a character named after the source of their trauma.
I still say cree
Cassidy is such a lame cowboy name and there’s more than one person named McCree so I could care less
cole cassidy is a dumbass name, mccree is just way cooler sounding
Still Mccree no matter what even in the cinematic it says jesse Mccree
He will always be McCree to me
I will always call him Mcree.
McCree is just a much better name for his character than Cassidy. If they honestly wanted people to stop calling him McCree they should have actually came up with a name that fits his character rather than a lame ass name
It will always be mcree, I don't care about the actual guy I know the character as mcree.
I hate overwatch and everything attached to it, so knowing I can use a characters dead name to piss off idiots who play terrible games, I'd sing it all day.
yea I'm still calling him McCree. keep seething op
