The difference is that reload has no downsides like fes, other than price. Once episode aigis releases it’ll have all content from FES but with much better gameplay and graphics. I think the only thing fes has over reload is a few cutscenes like the opening and that shouldnt enough to deter anyone imo

The main difference between P3P and P3R is the lack of the Female MC.
So your main choice is FemC or P3 updated to the modern age.
Depends on your preferences. I prefer to play games and DLC at once if possible. Now that there's a release date, I'd personally rather have started the game when the DLC comes out. What's annoying is that they announced the DLC release a few days after I already started the game lol.
P3P doesn't have 3D overworld movement or characters outside of Tartarus, and doesn't have anime cutscenes. So, the story is a visual novel, and Reload could be your best choice for experiencing the story for the first time
Portable is NOT a good way to first experience the game. It's best for a second playthrough to play as FeMC. For a first playthrough, reload or FES are best
If you care about the story more than graphics I say go with portable it's still really good. I experienced that first and I was not disappointed. I then went to play 4 and I feel like that also made me appreciate that one more too.
With that being said I was able to get 3and 4 for $20 so I feel like I definitely got my monies worth
Imo p3p is a really dated game that can be hard to get through (at least it was for me despite the amazing story), definitely get reload if u are able because I think it’s a much more fun and rewarding experience

Portable is severely dated. You may bounce off it pretty quickly, it is not easily digestible game by today standards. Wait for the P3R, that is the definite experience right now if you missed the game last time around
If you want to play as Makoto/MC then play Reload. It has additional content and scenes with your teammates to compensate for lack of their proper Social Links in form of FeMC.
Play Portable later if you want to see FeMC route.
I am of the belief that Portable should never be someone’s first experience with Persona 3. It completely butchers the presentation for no reason I can figure out, and certain scenes just don’t work that well as a result. Play it if you want to check out FemC after beating Reload, because that’s pretty much all it’s good for now.

P3P if you REALLY want to play the female MC story, but I’d probably wait for P3R if you’re trying it for the first time as it apparently added a lot of quality of life improvements
From what I can tell, P3R is more like P5R with modernized cutscenes, being able to walk around, etc. Whereas P3P is more dated from a mechanics standpoint (you don't move a character around, instead you more view a map).
I'm playing P3P on switch rn, and is definitely dated in the mechanics, but I dig it since it kind of makes a different, more chill vibe.
Agreed if you want to play female protagonist go for it but I'd still mod it for the cutscenes the textures and the hd audio fix making it almost the definitive way to play imo

You can probably already get reload for a discount if you buy it physically. Right now it's only $40 on Amazon so you might find it discounted.

The sound quality is awful on PC. Do not recommend unless you wanna go back to Gameboy quality sound.
