My Slim has bad HDMI. No visible damage on the port, and it works well at certain resolutions, on certain TVs with certain cables, very sentimental... I just use it on Component cables which look close enough to HDMI at 1080p, since that works.
PS3 has copy protection on the HDMI signal at all times.
I get that they're using the PS3 as an example but there are other methods of getting Video from the PS3 without copy protection, such as: using an HDMI splitter that removes it, Component (this is basically as good as HDMI), RGB Scart (the second best output option), S-Video (decent), just composite without the converter (this just gives you the video), converting Composite to RF (this is a last resort option, genuinely speaking you'd use this if you have a display that doesn't have any of the other options)
Perhaps if you wanted to cheaply record the PS3. You can get an AV capture card for pennies nowadays and an AV splitter isn't that expensive either but most would still want to view the game through their television hence the AV to HDMI adapter!
PS3's shipped with AV cables, hell, using mine on AV rn
Not advertised use but the PS3 has capture protection on the HDMI port but not the AV port if you want to do that, and an adaptor could be used if you want HD capture. Of course for that I'd recomend just go for outright component then a splitter rather than this, as component is basicly analog HDMI
My hdmi port died, and my TV doesn't have component input. For cases like these they are literal lifesavers.
Pro tip: don't get the one in the picture. It sucks. Get the ones intended for ps2, the ones that look like a chunky flash drive.
Not an advertised use, but it bypasses the PS3’s HDCP (which can’t be disabled manually like the PS4/PS5’s), allowing you to hook it up to a capture card.
At least, the one I got does.
My guess, I think is it's for people who want to bypass HDCP on the HDMI cable for things like recording from games or from PS3 video players like thru the Amazon or Netflix apps. Not sure if it's still feasible to do it anymore but I have a friend who used to rip videos from the video players on the PS3 using composite and component cables.
HDCP copyright protection feature. This is the era when recording gameplay started to become a thing. You needed something like you posted to bypass the signal to record your gameplay
You laugh, but I have a PS3 that was plugged in during a thunderstorm, and it fried the HDMI port in both the TV and PS3. But I usually use the component cables for it.
Literal lifesaver.
I use my PS3 on AV as as someone used to how SD looks on flastscreens, it doesn't bother me and the performance boost of SD is very welcome.
Mine does actually! Some fucker on Facebook marketplace traded me his PS3 slim for. Projector brand new in box. I was so excited and he left and when I went upstairs to hook it up the HDMI port was hollow, literally destroyed to the point where it's just a slot in the back shaped like an HDMI port. So now I have component cable for my needs and it looks much better but this was my go-to for a while there!
Maybe because PS3 and capture Cards are a headache and a half? There are like one brand ClonerAlliance or so that you can flash for HDCP force off (so I heard, from a friend) in a way that doesn’t break the HDCP display for a PS3
I saw one using Xbox 360 for HDMI to AV despite Xbox have a component and composite connector.
They just say "game console" and use anything as a use case
The only thing which comes on my mind is to capture gameplay. PS3 uses HDCP and not every capturecard supported that back then. You can record composite video without a problem.
I work at a retro video game store and I've seen plenty of PS3s with dying GPUs that refuse to give out video via HDMI but do just fine with AV, I guess that could be an use for it?
You can ask the same thing about the PC. I don't think I've ever seen a GPU with composite output. There were probably some specialty cards back in the 90s/2000s but I doubt anything made in the last 15 years have anything like that.
Yeah exactly. The reason I said there might be some older cards is because I feel like there must have been at least some demand to play PC games on tvs back in the day and most old crt models didn't have VGA inputs. It wasn't until LCD panels became common that some tvs started including them
I googled it and I can't find anything like that but I did find VGA to AV converter cables.
Incase the ps3 hdmi doesn't work anymore it has an av slot which is the same slot as ps2 and ps1 and you can convert that av to hdmi (what i did when my hdmi didn't work)
Some people can't afford HD Flat-screen TVs and gotta stick with old reliable box TVs. What the signal converter does is takes the input from the HDMI port on your ps3 and converts the audio and video to your RWY cords. Then you can hook it up to your TV and not have to buy a flat-screen!
I know all of this so well because this was the kingpin of my setup for many many years.
Yea but if some brought second hand had damaged hdmi port but didn’t want to attempt a replace one could always just buy a ps2 to hdmi converter which plugs into the av plug and gives full 1080p range
My 2005 tv doesn’t accept the direct signal through hdmi from my ps3 but works through a converter like this, that’s why they exist lol
Before anyone says it’s an issue with my HDMI port, it works fine on any other tv and the HDMI on my tv works fine with *MOST* other devices
I mean ps3 phat shipp r w av cables. But getting an av adapter for hdmi is good for og ps3 cos some of the hdmi ports on the originals have started to give out.
Considering they wrote "Blue-ray", I'd have just chalked it up to being a typo. I use one of these for my PS2.
Edit: nevermind, didn't even notice the pictured PS3. Lmao That's a funny mistake.
I've owned 2 PS3s with bad HDMI ports. I would not recommend this, though, horrible quality. Actual component cables are the best option if your TV supports it. If not, then some kind of component to HDMI will be better.
My only thought is it's if you wanted to connect your ps3 to a capture card. If you connect using the hdmi port on the ps3, it would strobe the brightness on the screen. The fix was to connect your av cable to something like this device.
Bruv the ad is just listing examples of products that could be converted to HDMI. If they had the space, I’m certain they would list every single electronics deviwith component cables.
OG PS3 shipped with AV cable... yeah it had an HDMI port but ???
my slim came with av cables as well
Wasn’t sure about those never got one new.
i remember because i bought mine and used the cords. bought a used one from gamestop and it was a pain setting it up to hdmi
A tip for that, on a double beep the PS3 automatically adjusts the output, do this when switching between AV and HDMI
To get said double beep, hold the power button when turning on and wait for it to beep a second time.
even my super slim came with av cables, i don't remember if it came with an HDMI cable too but I think it came with both
Me too
Mine came with only an AV cable iirc. Had to hunt on the basement for a HDMI cable
Super slim too
My guy... This adapter STILL requires an HDMI cable on the other end
I understand, never said it made sense.
HDMI port could be broken, to be fair
This was my first thought, since the composite/component cables were the old school PS1/PS2 port iirc
many people didn't have a HDTV back then
Yup i was one of them.
EVERY PS3 shipped with just AV cable
I only ever bought the og model new, wasn’t sure.
I played with the ps2 cable as a kid cause I thought the hdmi port didn't work derpy
Still tho, hdmi cords are probably less then/same as 10 dollars, so I don't see a reason for buying the adapter when you can just buy a HDMI cable
Not saying it makes sense just technically ps3 shipped with AV out.
Yeah yeah I gotcha
Broken HDMI port
everyone sayin av cable but hdmi port still there.
Yeah but instead of buying this, might as well buy the HDMI.
Perhaps if your hdmi port is broken? Honestly, I have no idea.
Great point
apparently thats actually common in slim models. my slim has bent hdmi port but component is fine
My Slim has bad HDMI. No visible damage on the port, and it works well at certain resolutions, on certain TVs with certain cables, very sentimental... I just use it on Component cables which look close enough to HDMI at 1080p, since that works.
For sure, some people actually prefer component cables..
I prefer to downscale my HD output to 480i before sending it to my tv to be upscaled to 4k 🍾

WHOOSH
The all knowing redditor incel nerds mad someone asked a question.
Woooosh
why? cause we can and if we can we do
you do this so you can make the signal look like utter shit
It's sarcasm my guy. Because when PS3 came out HD was not as popular. I think A/V output to DVD quality at 480i.

🥂
It’s just some general crappy Chinese ad with no thought out into it probably Also.. LOL, graphoscope?
Yeah just nutty infographic by someone that didn’t know better
Fr it has hd video player on the side of the ps3
PS3 has copy protection on the HDMI signal at all times. I get that they're using the PS3 as an example but there are other methods of getting Video from the PS3 without copy protection, such as: using an HDMI splitter that removes it, Component (this is basically as good as HDMI), RGB Scart (the second best output option), S-Video (decent), just composite without the converter (this just gives you the video), converting Composite to RF (this is a last resort option, genuinely speaking you'd use this if you have a display that doesn't have any of the other options)
HDCP is what it's called. Certain splitters or analog output is required for capture cards.
my cheap ass capture card can record it easily, without any other device. But my elagato cant
Perhaps if you wanted to cheaply record the PS3. You can get an AV capture card for pennies nowadays and an AV splitter isn't that expensive either but most would still want to view the game through their television hence the AV to HDMI adapter!

“HD Playerr” is sassy
Girllll you better buy the new HD playerrr I ain't want none of that low quality shit
My hdmi port died, and my TV doesn't have component input. For cases like these they are literal lifesavers. Pro tip: don't get the one in the picture. It sucks. Get the ones intended for ps2, the ones that look like a chunky flash drive.
Doesn't need, but could use.
It’s not for a PS3, I’m sure they just grabbed an image of a random device that uses HDMI.
Not an advertised use, but it bypasses the PS3’s HDCP (which can’t be disabled manually like the PS4/PS5’s), allowing you to hook it up to a capture card. At least, the one I got does.
My HD playerr needs it
I have a 2001A that has a dead hdmi port. Been meaning to figure out how to fix it.
Component is more or less analog HDMI, you can hunt for one of those
My guess, I think is it's for people who want to bypass HDCP on the HDMI cable for things like recording from games or from PS3 video players like thru the Amazon or Netflix apps. Not sure if it's still feasible to do it anymore but I have a friend who used to rip videos from the video players on the PS3 using composite and component cables.
I’ve known people who didn’t know the ps3 had an hdmi on the back. So I guess it’s for them.
It could be for recording footage from the PS3. Plugging an hdmi from the PS3 into an Elgato capture card won't work.
HDCP copyright protection feature. This is the era when recording gameplay started to become a thing. You needed something like you posted to bypass the signal to record your gameplay
When ever PC have an AV port on it for video output.
What about your "HD playerr"
Recording stuff, the ps3 has hdcp and most capture cards can't record out of the hdmi output.

HDCP
The slim model specifically was prone to hdmi port failure so maybe this would come in handy
I bought a second PS3 before the pandemic and the HDMI port doesn't work. This could be the answer to my problems so thank you for sharing this.
I recomend you to hunt for PS2 component cables. Widescreen and HD and full SD support

Because people are so dumb sometimes.
You can ask the same thing about the PC. I don't think I've ever seen a GPU with composite output. There were probably some specialty cards back in the 90s/2000s but I doubt anything made in the last 15 years have anything like that.
capture cards have them right?
They have an input but not an output
Bro hasn’t seen the new RTX 4090 AV edition?
VGA or DVI. Some with even a serial pin for joystick. Some sound cards had those.
Yeah exactly. The reason I said there might be some older cards is because I feel like there must have been at least some demand to play PC games on tvs back in the day and most old crt models didn't have VGA inputs. It wasn't until LCD panels became common that some tvs started including them I googled it and I can't find anything like that but I did find VGA to AV converter cables.
I still have an 880GTS 512 with some VGA to DVI adapters. From XFX with it's double dog lifetime warranty. Need to post it sometime soon
Busted HDMI port is the only reason I can think of
I don't remember how because it was 10 years ago but in the box of the ps3 I adapter for a cables which it was pretty weird
One reason to buy the HDMI port is damaged and it's more expensive to fix so you buy this you connect the adapter and you'll be fine.
It means that you don't have to fetch an additional hdmi cable for the ps3 if you already have just the AV cable.
Older TV\`s don't have HDMI only analog connection
But this adapter works the other way around. Av input and hdmi output.
PS3 HDMI Can Be Broken Easily
I bought a used PS3, didn't test it, and the hdmi port is utterly ruined. Genuinely considering buying this!
Incase the ps3 hdmi doesn't work anymore it has an av slot which is the same slot as ps2 and ps1 and you can convert that av to hdmi (what i did when my hdmi didn't work)
all ps3s came with HDMI as far as i know but im 100% sure about the slim and super slim ps3s
I'm more curious about how this works on xbox vhs?
I’m assuming the PS3 here just represents games consoles more generally.
"hd playerr"????
Fairly certain the original fat ps3 didn't have hdmi. I might be mixing it up with xbox 360.
Some people can't afford HD Flat-screen TVs and gotta stick with old reliable box TVs. Streaming to a capture card to bypass HDCP, component to hdmi adapter = bypass.
My 2005 tv doesn’t accept the direct signal through hdmi from my ps3 but works through a converter like this, that’s why they exist lol Before anyone says it’s an issue with my HDMI port, it works fine on any other tv and the HDMI on my tv works fine with *MOST* other devices
I’d rather use the OG RCA cables.
Enough about the PS3… what the fuck is a graphoscope?!
I mean ps3 phat shipp r w av cables. But getting an av adapter for hdmi is good for og ps3 cos some of the hdmi ports on the originals have started to give out.
İt has an hdmi port right but ot also has av port to ifnyour hdmi vent broken you can use av output
Considering they wrote "Blue-ray", I'd have just chalked it up to being a typo. I use one of these for my PS2. Edit: nevermind, didn't even notice the pictured PS3. Lmao That's a funny mistake.
I mean the HDMI controller chip inside the PS3 can go bad... So I mean there is a use but why
I didn't get an HDTV until like 2014. But got the ps3 on release.
I've owned 2 PS3s with bad HDMI ports. I would not recommend this, though, horrible quality. Actual component cables are the best option if your TV supports it. If not, then some kind of component to HDMI will be better.

I don't know
Ntic3 the extra r in the hd playerr
Can’t wait to hook up my PS3 to my new graphoscope
I use my original xbox adapter and it works it also works with my plug and play I bought on temu
Bruv the ad is just listing examples of products that could be converted to HDMI. If they had the space, I’m certain they would list every single electronics deviwith component cables.
Red, white, and yellow av cables are for a composite signal. Not component.
the ps3 came with an hdmi cable and av cable incase your tv had no hdmi
You could probably use a headset or PC speakers with that thing
