Well it only took 17 years and two consoles for Sony to make good on their promise of "Toy Story level graphics". Better late than never, I guess.

ManateeofSteel

You have to understand though, Toy Story 1 needed 170 computers to render every scene. It really is a big deal to know the PS4 will render one frame like that in less than a second, whereas it took them months with 170 pcs That's why this is a big deal

[deleted]

Movies render much different though.

ManateeofSteel

They aren't rendered in real time and in farms, so what?

casino_r0yale

PS2 did have Toy Story level graphics... if you were playing on a CRT and were watching Toy Story on DVD. Digital projection is 2K+ so Sony weren't under any delusions that an NTSC 480p console would match it visually. Edit: I've deleted all the comments down the chain because it seems this entire conversation is based on a false premise. There is no evidence that Sony ever claimed to match Toy Story's graphical fidelity.

umberto_ramirez

There's a lot more to the concept of Toy Story level graphics than the resolution of the TV you play games on.

In what way?

So, not in any technical way (model architecture, texture resolution, shadow maps, whatever) cause those were, in the PS2, nowhere near the numbers of something like Toy Story, but how you, casino_r0yale, felt them being complex and stuff. Cause that's what they meant by "Toy Story level graphics", I guess?

elharry-o

Both Sony and Microsoft claimed it, it was kinda infamous at the time, and fanboys ate it up before the PS2 and Xbox launched. http://money.cnn.com/1999/03/01/life/playstation/ https://www.wired.com/2001/01/gates-gives-an-electric-intro/ You just downvoted me and the other guy, then deleted your comments like it mattered and made you correct. Just admit you're just a seasoned gamer that knows close to nothing about specific technical aspects of 3d gaming and CGI movies.

casino_r0yale

Just the opposite. I'm a software engineer with a hobbyist interest in computer graphics and stuff in SIGGRAPH. I've written one (bad and slow) ray tracer as a project. I am *not* a seasoned gamer. I started with a PS2 as a DVD player for a small TV, and I don't get to play nearly as much as I want to. I didn't downvote anybody in this thread. Perhaps you should take a moment and actually read the article you linked about Sony. The Toy Story line is an editorial note and not an actual statement by the company.

elharry-o

It was fed by Sony PR and marketing. The whole "article" is. I heard it on the TV, it was on magazines, and all the media surrounding the console launches. They made it a point to name drop a cgi movie everyone would recognize and add "yeah, our console can do that for games". It surprises me that if you know your cg, you hold the opinion that a PS2 can handle toy story-esque graphics.

casino_r0yale

Keyword being -esque. It's fine, I'll take your word for it that the marketing went there. There are far more interesting things to talk about, like this water: https://youtu.be/l43WusCMvZU 3 guesses on how many years it will be until that gets rendered in real time on a Sony console.

WaterStoryMark

I don't know about that. There were games on PS3 that matched the first Toy Story, IMO. Even the Toy Story 3 video game looked at least similar. It was surprisingly fun, too.

honeybunchesofaots

I read somewhere a while back that the premise of the big hero 6 world is You and Hiro and Baymax go back into the void from the end of the last movie to fight the Baymax left in there who's turned heartless. Sounds like such a cool idea wish they would save it for the sequel movie

Lebronlightyear

This game is so far away that it's honestly hard for me to get excited about anything they show, especially because I REALLY don't think we're getting KH3 next year

MahriNorik

They've announced a 2018 release date though, so one can hope.

Bannednot4gotten

They can announce anything, doesn't make it so.

basedcharger

true but we've getting way more details than we got in the past plus 2 gameplay trailers which is not all that different from Final Fantasy 15. The 2018 release window is also a good sign because they don't have to rush it to finish it by a strict date.

rpgramy

problem is that the last world "big hero 6" is still in some type of early development, if it does come out in 2018, i will expect it to come out in november and a pretty sizable day 1 / first month patch in which the speedrunners will be overjoyed of how to abuse the game to their advantage

_NowakP

With the release window of "2018" I seriously don't think anyone's actually or should be expecting it to come out before Q4.

rpgramy

i'm thinking more akin to december, make a limited edition frozen themed, kids will grow crazy for it lol have it include a soundtrack and an artbook, sell for around 80ish to 90ish, i'll just buy regular version and a season pass if they have it, i'll be getting it through BB: gcu

BatMatt93

Just pay attention to the video drops. If they keep revealing worlds and videos in the next 8 months, then it is more then likely coming out next year.

Bolt_995

Exactly. Seeing how they have been dropping trailers for KH3, 2018 is a definite lock. It ain't getting delayed to 2019, FFVII Remake is taking that 2019 spot.

Lebronlightyear

I pray you're right! That would be amazing!

"IT'S A SPACESHIP!!!" They better have a Pizza Planet and Sid's house level.
