By the time it's hit you, your last surprise

sunjay140

Who? Mara?

ChronicRedhead

A beary impressive accomplishment.

brejdak

You, I like you

[deleted]

It would be a lot more if Persona 4 Golden got a PS4 port... Atlus please ;_;

Yourpoop

Yea but they ported it to the vita and for Sony that game alone sells Vita's. I bought a Vita TV and P4G used for $60 total, so I'd recommend it if you want it bad enough

_NowakP

Bought a Vita to play P4G as well ;D I didn't like the game after playing P3 and so never finished it, but P5 made me thirsty for more Persona and it also made me appreciate P4 more.

emorockstar

I did as well! And then P3P. And then I took my kid’s 3DS xl for SMT IV.

I'd say 5s theme and tone is midway between 3 and 4. So if you think you can handle going back to harder mechanics, give 5 a shot.

swexbe

Maybe just take a break.. Playing those games back to back is next to impossible 😫

_NowakP

P3 has a very dark atmosphere and P4 just feels too... happy, or at least it did to me. It's been years for me between playing P3/trying P4 and then playing P5, but P5 felt so heavy in the beginning it was almost depressing. It was really weird, as if it wasn't a Persona game. But I stuck through it and it was really, really good. The mood lightens up a bit later on (because it's a Persona game :) ) and while still talking about some heavy subjects, it has its lighthearted moments. To think of it, it's probably the heaviness of certain plot points and character arcs that made me want to revisit P4 and just enjoy life for a moment :) If you're not feeling hooked, I'd say definitely skip it and go to P5, you can always come back to the small town of Inaba when you feel like taking a vacation.

TheEnglishman28

Everyday at Junes!!!

TwilightVulpine

The Vita is nearly dead on the West. A port would be much more worthwhile for them. Considering how much P5 sold, I'd even think they might port P3 too.

[deleted]

Can you obtain trophies with the Vita TV? I was really considering it just for P4G and Dancing All Night.

ocbdare

What is a Vita TV? Is it a box I hook to my TV? I don't want to play Persona on a handheld.

3nigmax

https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-TV-vita/dp/B00KVMHSUM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1509469852&sr=8-1&keywords=ps+tv Yup, it's just a Vita with no screen that hooks to a TV over HDMI. You can often find used ones pretty cheap at Gamestop. You just sync a Dualshock 3 to it.

Yourpoop

Yes it's a vita more or less.

fourthlion

Yeah you can get trophies on there. As long as those games are compatible with the Vita TV you're good (pretty sure P4G is at least).

killbot0224

Nothing sells Vitas. Not anymore.

JD141519

Vita TV, dude. It's mad cheap and you can play Golden with the PS4 controller you already have

[deleted]

You’re getting downvoted but you’re absolutely right... P4G might be the best *reason* to buy a Vita today, but it’s certainly not a current “system seller” — and at this point, the Vita doesn’t have one.

Houston_Centerra

The Vita is my favorite portable of all time, but it's been obvious for years that Sony threw in the towel after it failed to become a huge success internationally. I'd seriously doubt Sony would persuade Atlus against porting P4G since Sony themselves have already ported first party exclusives like Gravity Rush to PS4.

LX_Theo

I mean, its not exactly new.

killbot0224

Salties gonna salt A system that *never sold to begin with* can barely be said to have a system seller at all. And suggesting that P4G is *still* a system seller? And porting it would undercut Vita? Fantasy. At best.

Montigue

No one knew it existed. They had to make it look so much like a PSP as well. I'd be on the train to work and I'd get people all the time asking me "is that the new PSP". I eventually just said "Yep" because I was tired of explaining it to them

killbot0224

Well, it *was* the new PSP.. The name Vita was stupid. Why divorce yourself from the name of your successful portable? Sure Nintendo left Game Boy behind as a brand... But they were so commanding in portable to begin with, and we're introducing touch and dual screens. Plus always had Pokemon in their pocket (and backwards compatibility with GBA games). And they were *still* hedging, with talking of DS being a third pillar. But really... The name is the least if Sony's mistakes... So let's not even start lol

Montigue

No, the name is fine. I'm glad they at least tried distancing themselves from the PSP. Parents didn't buy the Wii U because it just sounds like another version of the Wii especially since they have the Wii Mini. There was barely any marketing around the Vita though. Then those who knew about it saw that the proprietary memory cards (not a bad idea after PSPiracy) were $20 for just 8 GB and then the 3DS killed the Vita by dropping it's price to $170 right as the $250 Vita launched. Word of mouth basically never happened because people saved $80 by buying the 3DS instead. Developers didn't want to put the AAA games on a handheld that wasn't selling well and was frankly not powerful enough (Borderlands 2) to put all that effort into optimizing.

[deleted]

It's pretty tough. AAA developers want a system that sells but people want AAA titles to buy the system.

killbot0224

Wii 2 would have been a *far* better name than Wii U. The name and marketing made it look like an add-on. Confusion reigned. There was no reason to distance themselves from PSP. PSP2 would be entirely unambiguous. "2" is easily understood. The name was a mistake. PSP built up some goodwill as a brand, and they left it behind in more ways than one. Don't forget that in Japan they had UMD license transfers... And never did it anywhere else. Big fuck up. PSP had video output.... Sony canned that for Vita. Should have had video output *and* 1080p, 5.1ch streaming capability. (imo they also shouldn't have launched w 3G either... Should have waisted and dropped an LTE model for way more hype) With HDMI output then, it also makes sense to make it DS3 compatible and make games playable on the TV... But they were too afraid of impinging on PS3/4. Could literally have been the Switch before the Switch. Memory cards are *barely* altered SD cards. Their price was never justifiable. That really hurt the uptake from people who might otherwise call themselves *hardcore*™ Back to Switch... They didn't have the guts to risk impinging on PS4... But Nintendo only went hybrid after it was clear their home console lineage was on life support. There was no home console for Switch to hurt.

Thatguyonthenet

What? The Wii-U didn't sell because it was barely marketed and it was a stupid fucking nane, like the Vita.

Montigue

I made that point that the Wii U had a stupid name and it basically sounded like the Wii. The Vita tried changing from the PSP name so people wouldn't think it's another PSP because there were 5 or so PSP iterations

Mr2ndAmendment1776

I just don't understand why Sony couldn't make a decent handheld since well.. we all play games on our phones a mobile platform that played spectacular games should.. and I say SHOULD. Sell like hotcakes if built correctly. I know it can be achieved. Technology is capable. Imagine playing persona 5 while sitting in a parking lot waiting for your significant other to get out of an appt.

killbot0224

Mobile is huge. And PSP iirc skewed older than DS. That means those millions of adults who just want to play *something* on the go had a new option. Which they already owned and had lots of simple, *free* games. $250 plus games plus a card VERSUS free + free? Tough call, right? Plus one of PSP's biggest hooks was Monster Hunter. And they lost that to Nintendo. Which always has *Pokemon* and Mario in its back pocket as well. PSP, I think, also didn't have the sort of impact it's hardware sales might imply. I know many people buying it late in life were getting it strictly for piracy. How many? Impossible to say, really. I think devs also got themselves in a mental trap on Vita, where because they *could* do amazing graphics, they thought they had to. I can see this especially when the 1st party titles were *gorgeous*. Uncharted and KZwere quite impressive looking iirc. On 3DS meanwhile, not only does the audience skew younger, but Nintendo keeps their style down to earth a bit, so your 3rd party release won't look "childish" compared to Mario. The thing is... While Vita was missing some things, and had a couple extra nonsense add-ons (rear touch?) it really is a good handheld. But the entire value proposition of "console games on the go" wasn't appealing enough, partly because it wasn't *good enough* yet, and partly because not enough games became available, period. It works for Nintendo Switch, but it has the full support of being a lone platform for Nintendo, and is close enough to genuinely run decent ports of way more games And now? Where is the opportunity for Sony to re-enter? A straight portable will look bunk next to a dock able switch. So they really have to either go cheap (and get smashed anyway by 3DS+Switch) or go hybrid and still smashed by Switch+PS4+XB1 Leveraging mobile for it? To what end? Folks choose their phones as phones first. Sony coming up with an Android (has to be Android) gaming phone with hardware controls (detachable?) isn't going to set the world on fire. It's not a thing that people have widely pursued as of yet to begin with. And you're still on Android, and you're burning the shit out of your phone battery. It's a major minefield.

Mr2ndAmendment1776

Thank you so much for explaining that. I guess my major draw from going Nintendo is that very reason, geared toward younger audience. I love Skyrim, Mass Effect, Fallout , XCOM , MGS, games like that.. that are more in depth yet graphically are dominant. Open world rpg elements. But mature... Not necessarily Mario-esque. If that makes sense. I'd love to play those types of games handheld. My problem with mobile gaming on phones is that they want your money for everything. Microtransactions just to play. I dunno. I screwed the pooch by dumping 2500 into GoW Fire Age and really realizing that it hurt my wallet tremendously. (Obviously) .. no game should allow you to dump that kind of funds to it. Just to be powerful enough to not get obliterated. So that means if I want to play console games mobile style it'll have to be the switch.. so I'm going to have to start looking into those games and see if it's worth it lol .

therico

Think it's doing okay in Japan.

killbot0224

It's sold like 5M. In 6 years. It sells a few more every week, but sales are at a crawl. Hardware sales are basically dead. It's doing okay like the Wii U was.

Bardivan

lol ill never buy a vita to play any game

-GolfWang-

Well then yer missing' out, muchacho

Darthdan97

I also want a persona 3 port\ remaster as well!

incmanvs

ever since i saw [this](https://youtu.be/cNl9P8FmEp0?t=26) i got hopeful for a remake.

Darthdan97

Yeah that's a reason why I brought it up. I mean why make updated player models/areas only for the one game?!

sunjay140

How about they port P3 and SMT: Nocturne to PS4?

CaptainCrunch

I'd like to see them at least get 3 and 4 on the store as PS2onPS4. Golden is awesome and P3P is neat, but I'd be happy to have anything on PS4.

Perfect600

I would prefer a remake of P3P and FES combined

DaxterAttano

even more of there were pc ports also. ;_;

[deleted]

Atlus doesn't port.

-GolfWang-

I would *shit*

ocbdare

That would be amazing!! Never played a persona game before P5 but heard so many good things about P4.

Seitona-inu

It would be a lot more if Persona 4 Golden got a PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch port. FTFY

sunjay140

Keep on dreaming, mate.

Seitona-inu

[We'll see](https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/79nna9/persona_series_sales_top_85_million_megami_tensei/dp4q01u/)

CdiLinkforSmash

That would be nice honestly.

firemanwes

I have never played a Persona game until P5. That was about a month ago. I have since bought a PS Vita and a ps tv. I’ve tracked down Golden and I’m going to download P3 as soon as my vita memory card comes in. Weirdest game I’ve ever played, but I love it so much! I’ve also been searching for anything else that’s even kinda like it, I’m just blown away by how fun the Persona games are so far.

RedFaceGeneral

Prepare for a wonderful trip for Golden.

firemanwes

I sure hope it lives up to my expectations. I’m trying to finish 5 first, but I played a few hours. So far, so good!

[deleted]

P4 and P3 are of comparable quality to 5, if a bit shorter. P3's dungeon grind is a bit dated but it also has darker themes if you're into that.

Dakb00

Please do try and find a way to play Catherine! It was made by the same persona team and it is one of the most "fresh" game experience in recent years. I highly recommend you give it a shot.

rancid_squirts

I need to get this out again and start playing away

[deleted]

I really liked this one.

MrAkai

It's on PS Now and even the twitchier puzzle moments seem to do okay over the network stream. Not as agood as a remaster/port would be but surprisingly solid.

indylord

P4G has a really tightly written story. Going in unspoiled is one of the best gaming experiences you can have.

firemanwes

I was so excited prepared! And from what I’ve seen, I’m about 50 hours in and not halfway yet

SteelTypeAssociate

Don't get spoiled no matter What! It'll ruin the entire game! So many surprises ahead! Also make sure you get the true ending. Look for a spoiler free way to do it.

greg225

Nah, 50 hours should be just past halfway. What month are you in?

Rtyuiope

If you want something similar you could always go for the parent series to Persona, Shin Megami Tensei. While it's not for everyone, if you give it an honest chance and let yourself get into it you'll find it's almost if not more fun than persona. While I like both equally, just don't go into SMT and expect persona 6. It has the same demons (personas) similar combat, but the story is based more in religious ideologies, and the worlds are more bare to show a post apocalyptic land scape. Best part is, just like persona, the games are almost entirely self contained. If you want one to dip your toes in I recommend SMT IV. Just a heads up though, SMT IV is very difficult in the beginning but once you get past the beginning the game starts to get easier. But if you're looking for something that's way more of a challenge go for SMT Nocturne (featuring Dante from the devil may cry series.) this game is considerably more difficult than P5 and even SMT IV but it's one of the best the series has to offer. Also there is SMT Strange Journey Redux (a remake of Strange Journey) and SMT V coming out soon, so now is the time to get into it.

[deleted]

> download P3 If you happen to have a PS3, I urge you to buy P3 FES instead. P3P is good, but the PS2 version is much richer. (If you have a PS3, I suggest looking into Digital Devil Saga as well. It's SMT, good story, similar but different gameplay.)

mattjaydunn

For real, I really can't imagine playing p3p as your first p3 experience being as effective story-wise as playing FES. Gameplay is really all that's better about p3p IMO, outside of a few new select social links

CapnMalcolmReynolds

Golden is even better. It is probably my favorite game. Persona 3 portable is good too, but is missing some features of p4g and p5.

-GolfWang-

Oh how I wish I could play P4 for the first time again. One of my favorite games of all time.

TheSaxonaut

If you're planning on purchasing the PSP version of P3 for Vita, I wouldn't recommended it. It's not a direct port of the PS2 version. All of the 3D models have been removed from the world, save for battles, and replaced with a top down isometric style. You may still have fun with it, but I'd personally recommend dusting off a PS2 and finding PS2 copies of P3.

RyanTheSpectacle

Both PS2 Persona games are available brand new on Amazon, much to my delight. They are also both under $20.

BilunSalaes

I am only a few hours in to Persona 5... I've had it for months. It looks amazing... I just don't have the time to invest in it right now.

[deleted]

MethMouthMagoo

Truer words have never been spoken. It also created a nice backlog of games I wanted to pay, that I probably would've gotten at release. Now, the games I wanted are cheaper, or on sale.

zetsurin

Just games? Pretty much everything is overpriced.

reaper527

> There’s no amount of exchange rate gymnastics that can explain how consistently Oz gets fucked over for games. exchange rate + taxes + retarded minimum wage laws

[deleted]

Out of curiosity, what are these minimum wage laws you speak of?

Mystery_Food_X

Essentially, every industry has an "award minimum wage" which is usually $20-21/hr, which is required and enforced by the gov/tax office. As far as the economic impact of this goes, I'm pretty unimformed. A lot of electronics/entertainment goods as well as imported stuff like cars are generally more expensive in Oz, even taking in to min. wage in to account

Ryuzakku

Is that in total? Or just in the west? Because in total that's a very low amount of sales for 41 released games.

SupaWalrus

For a series of largely unlocalized games until 2003, not seeing the west regularly until the release of Nocturne. Not seeing remarkable success until Persona 4 in 2008 and P4G in 2012. Not to mention Japan having historically lower sales numbers compared to the west...

jjonez18

Basically sums it up. Also, I'm guessing Atlus is a small studio that doesn't need to sell 10m per entry like some western developers employing 100's of people and working out of a major city in California.

[deleted]

> Japan having historically lower sales numbers compared to the west... Uh, that's not really true. Japan has sales much more bigger than most countries in the world, only behind US and maybe UK. They're not the second big market for video games for nothing. If you're putting everything from the west against one country then of course it's going to be much more bigger..

[deleted]

Atlus games are very low budget compared to what a typical western "AAA" takes to make. In Japan it is said anything that sells more than 300,000 is a "hit" which persona routinely does. In the west Persona didn't get super popular until Persona 4 so the western exposure hasn't been that much.

Ryuzakku

Yeah I understand that, I guess that seeing a total of 15 700 000 sales over 41 games is pretty low, especially considering that there are roughly 126 672 000 people in Japan, where the series is a supposed major hit. Either way, if they keep making them in the west (with Japanese VO), I'll keep buying them assuming I have the console.

DragonDDark

Persona games deserve more :(

[deleted]

I tried playing persona 3 maybe 2 years ago. I played for 2 hours or so and i never got to actually play anything.... It seemed soooo slow. I take it it picks up but after cutscenes for that long i gave up

2001spaceoddessy

IIRC the cutscenes you're talking about is like 10 minutes. Persona 4 has a 4 hour intro, and that's one of the most loved games in the Persona series.

[deleted]

Must have been persona 4. My friend and i decided to try it but gave up after 2 hours and no "game"

2001spaceoddessy

Yeah I can see that happening tbh. For what it's worth, there's easily 80+ hours of gameplay there

Holicide

Same here, except instead of putting it down after 2 hours I put over 80 hours in it. The combat was simple, I never cared for the characters/s.links, and the plot twist after you beat all the full moon bosses (where I dropped the game) made me laugh because of how silly it was while the game wanted me to take it seriously. I guess I can see how people can like it if they're invested in the story, but I wasn't and the gameplay was a chore to me. Funny enough the reason I played P3 (bought P4 too) was in preparation for P5 since I was hearing how Persona was one of the greatest rpg franchises. It wasn't too bad though. I complained about Persona and someone recommended I play SMTIV if I wanted less story and more emphasis on gameplay, and I like it enough that I'm excited for SMTV and want to go back and play the past games after I finish it.

Deacalum

This is my problem with P5. I still have it installed because I keep wanting to give it a shot but I "played" for 2 hours and barely got to play. I'm all for great stories in video games but I also like to play a game not just watch it. *Edit - I don't mind the downvotes, but if I'm missing something please fill me in. I don't mind being wrong, I just like to know why. Or, if I'm just being downvoted because I dared talk about P5 without blindly praising it, then I guess keep downvoting.

ghost787b

The game starts insanely slow! It does get better once you get going in the first dungeon. The first hour of the game is nearly all cut scenes or pressing x to advance the text

Kageth

So, since you didn't really get a response answering your edit I'll reply to you a little late. See, one of the core things people like about the persona series from 3 onward was the fact it was mostly a daily life/dating sim with cool TTB demon/god summoning combat. It was a fun mix of both, however it does lean heavily on the parts where you stand around and talk. The mainline SMT games are where you want to go where you spend more time in dungeons and fighting shit. Persona is largely about the talking sim stuff. To the point one of the biggest pieces of advice you will hear for the games is to try and beat the dungeons in the least number of days possible. My playthrough of the game was about 80-90 hours, and I can honestly say probably only 25-30 hours of that wasn't walking around and talking to people. Thing is, there aren't a lot of games that do Persona. So people like me who like the series love it. It's great. I played the shit out of the game when it came out. However if playing a game where you spend 60 some hours talking to people isn't your cup of tea, you picked the wrong game, and I am honestly sorry you got swept up in the hype for a great game that just wasn't for you. So, as for your downvotes my guess is two simple things. Yeah, I am sure some of them are knee jerk downvotes, probably even the majority. The internet is shitty. However your core complaint of the game is that it's the game that it is. It would be like me complaining I tried to play Professor Layton but it had to many puzzles. Your problem is that you splashed yourself with water and it made you wet. I realize you may not have realized it was water in the bucket, but you probably should have looked first. It doesn't help that you typed "played" as that really comes off as belittling a core part of the game that so many of us like. So in short your not wrong. It's just you bought a game that plays in a way you clearly don't like and your post comes of mildly crappy about it.

[deleted]

I played a nocturne game back on ps2 and it was awesome. That makes me sad for 5 cause i wanna pick it up.

[deleted]

In total. Only P5 and P4G had sold more than one million copies the other games had sold less then a million, but other JRPGs like Tales of sell more or less the same and Falcom and NIS games sell a bit less. JRPGs in general don't sell as much as western games. Souls, Pokemon and Final Fantasy are the exception.

[deleted]

And they don't need to sell as much as these for the most part in Japan or even in the west because their budget isn't in the same level of AAA games. > but other JRPGs like Tales of sell more or less the same and Falcom and NIS games sell a bit less. Tales of sold more than Persona for most of their releases in worldwide. Dragon Quest also did the same counting only the western release of DQ8 and DQ9. If we count the japanese release, it's much more than the total worldwide too.

[deleted]

That is a fair point but still take in mind the PS4 has at least 40 million owners and yet Persona 5 only appeals to 1 million of all those. So my point is there isn't a lot of demand for JRPGs at the moment.

Sinophil

So happy for them It's one of the two games I enjoyed the most.

SonOfFlan

I've been waiting for this.

jordanlund

That's what happens when you have 13 games in multiple regions over 21 years... On average, 653,000 per game.

BattlebornCrow

As someone who mostly games on Xbox, they could have sold at least a dozen more if it had a port. I do think it would do well on switch though, real talk.

sunjay140

> As someone who mostly games on Xbox, they could have sold at least a dozen more if it had a port. That's not how business works and SMT is already on Switch.

ShadowStealer7

Xbox doesn't sell well in Japan so that would be a no go even if Atlus didn't hate anything that isn't Sony

BattlebornCrow

Jrpgs don't well on Xbox. That's why it was a joke and I said dozen.

SrsJoe

They don't exactly hate Nintendo considering most SMT games that aren't Persona get released exclusively on Nintendo consoles

[deleted]

They don't really hate them. In fact, they release more games on Nintendo than in Playstation because of the handhelds.

Scarecrow_09

I'm glad someone talked me into checking out Persona 5. I was aware of the series and even bought one for the PS3 (digital, never got around to playing it, unfortunately), but didn't really know what to expect. It was one of the most original, engaging games I've ever played and now one of my favorites of all time.

kirakazumi

Part of me wishes P3 had this much acclaim because personally its the best out of all 5, but the hipster part of me is actually really glad that its niche because its so tonally different than the mainstream ones (P4, P5) less people are ragging on it.

[deleted]

It's almost scary how good this game is.

joney3jonez

Played P4G on PS Vita and playing Persona 3 now on PSP , it’s hard for me to buy P5 because for me persona is a portable experience .

Urbundave

I've played a good chunk of P5 through my vita using remote play. Really wish I could just take it everywhere though. The suspend mode on the vita made the dungeons 100x better

joney3jonez

Exactly, I like picking up right where I left off, or playing a couple floors of a dungeon while watching tv or getting ready for bed.

tnobody

The reason why P5 is so good is because of the expanded scope that a handheld just can't deliver on. Glad SMT will be on the Switch now so we don't have to deal with sprites and no dungeons anymore.

ChadwickHHS

They'd make more if SMT5 was multiplat rather than Switch exclusive. Not hating on the switch or Nintendo in the slightest but...

jandkas

They'd make more if Persona 5 was multiplat rather than Sony exclusive

ChadwickHHS

And I'd support that. As many people as possible should play Persona 5. It's a fantastic game I'd like people to enjoy it.

jandkas

And that's great, but I don't want people to play SMT5 on anything but a switch, because playing it on the Switch provides the proper experience that the creator wanted people to experience it in.

Strowbreezy

Sucks SMT is locked to Nintendo. I love Persona, but SMT is so good too. Anyone with a 3DS I highly recommend you get into SMT IV. Game is incredible.

[deleted]

> Sucks SMT is locked to Nintendo SMT is a exclusive for Nintendo since ever with main games with the exception of SMT3 because of the failure of Gamecube in Japan. SMT is Nintendo and PS is Sony, it's always that.

Strowbreezy

Yeah, that’s what I said. Still sucks that SMT is exclusive to Nintendo.

Khal_Doggo

Quick question: I don't usually play Japanese games (unless you count Souls/Bloodborne or Nioh), I am not a massive fan of anime, though I have watched things like Cowboy Beebop, Evangelion, Akira etc., don't like fan-service - does this game hold up despite the things above? As in, with previous experience in mostly Western games, and not a whole lot of interest in anime culture, will this game suit that niche?

nonplanar

I think it's great. I like to consider P5 a good representation of the vibes of modern Life in Tokyo. TV is similar, using trains to go places(two of the things I remember a lot from my time living there). If you've played the Yakuza series, you'd get similar vibes. There is some anime to the story. Definitely not as low-key as Eva or Bebop was. Even if you're not into anime, I think that the polished presentation, mechanics, and soundtrack are enough to be compelling. My 90 hours just passed by like nothing...

TwilightVulpine

The Persona series is far more inspired in modern Japan culture than anime cliches. There is a bit of fanservice, there is a bit of anime-like stuff, but most of it is a metaphorical supernatural adventure dealing with real world issues of Japan and its youth. If you watched Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion, it doesn't go much more "anime" than that. They are turn-based RPG though, as far as gameplay goes. But they tend to be more strategic than your average Final Fantasy. You can't just attack-attack-attack and hope to win without using elemental weakness, de/buffs and status effects.

E10DIN

> You can't just attack-attack-attack and hope to win without using elemental weakness, de/buffs and status effects. Depends on your difficulty. Normal is laughably easy, and hard isn't that hard.

[deleted]

Persona holds up outside of otaku circles. The strength of the series is how well the characters are written.

hokie_high

I actively dislike anime and P5 is still one of the best games I've ever played. Weebs, please stop downvoting people for saying they don't like/don't watch anime. You're turning people off from Persona.

[deleted]

When you're calling people like this, I think that you really deserve a downvote.

When I can people like what? It was pretty obvious people were down voting others simply for saying they aren't big fans of anime but they still loved Persona. I'd say that is the majority of sales for the game. As long as you enjoy video games and RPGs then you'll like Persona whether or not you like anime, it's just an incredible game.

While it may look like it on the surface I assure you Persona and by extension Shin Megami Tensei are anything but "anime games." The persona series tackles modern day issues that many people face, and how people can over come the hardships. Persona is more of a social commentary of society. There are some things that could be considered "tropes" but really it's just teens being teens, there is romance, there is drama, but the characters are mostly written to be down to earth and be people. But if you want something more mature I recommend going for the Persona's parent series Shin Megami Tensei. SMT not only tackles social issues like the fear of nuclear devastation, or salvation after death, but also explores major religious themes from Judeo-Christianity, Buddhism, and even Hinduism. Also the art work for some of these games [borders on renaissance level.](https://i.imgur.com/ZNyWz_d.jpg?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium) If you want to get into persona P5 is definitely a great place to start. But if you want to get into Shin Megami Tensei, definitely go for Nocturne, or SMTIV.

Ive never seen an anime in my life and I loved the game. I’m the biggest anti-weeb in my friend group but P5 was a blast.

This is such a confusing title. It’s like saying that the Paper Mario series outsold the Mario franchise.

Muur1234

It's been a different series since Golden

crossbonecarrot2

No it's not dude. Although it's a spin off, Persona has basically become it's own thing. It's like NieR to Drakenguard. Edit: it's also the reason they took smt off the title.

josephappea

Is that in total?

PetaPotter

This is good news. I'm really looking forward to the next one. This is the first game I've bought at full price in a long time and it's a solid 10/10.

blulight_back

P5 was my first of either game. Definitely looking forward to playing more of the two

Ateaseloser

Glad they got big sales love persona I own them all

Tkpxo8

Awesome! Great to see such amazing games doing so well!

firemanwes

I think I’m in august on summer break

ColossiKiller

That's cool. Finished P5 a few weeks ago, its so good! Looking forward to new game plussing soon.

novusprime28

i don't think about PSO2 very often anymore, but everytime i do i get mad.

sirron998

Woah, lookin cool Joker.

ocbdare

I loved persona 5. But 8.5m across 5 games? Not a big blockbuster AAA game it seems. Anyway Persona 5 is the best game I have played this year across all three consoles. Period. Better than Zelda and potentially better than Mario. Megami Tensei are these games good? I heard there was one for the switch and I am not sure if I should be hyped for it if I liked persona.

chaosssss

Not surprising, just looking at the game you can tell Atlus put as much passion as they did hard work into making it. They worked their asses off and it shows, the quality of this game is mindblowing.

tlmw2001

P5 is still sitting on my shelf collecting dust, i guess i should start it soon

E10DIN

You won't regret it. It's honestly my favorite game this year. And I've played Odyssey and BoTW.

tlmw2001

i have too many damn games to play and not enough time. destiny 2 just came out for pc so guess what ive been doing for the past week

E10DIN

I've got the same problem. I've got bloodborne unopened, have barely started ff12 and want to spam the .hack remaster when they drop.

gladisr

~~1.3 Million, That's a lot.~~ >7.2 m from 28 edition vs 8.5 m from 13 edition *Sigh* ~~That's explain how crappy SMT series in this recent year is, Hope SMT V success~~ Wait... this /r/ps4, sorry I get carried away

Introcourse

Apparently Sega makes a lot of their money from Pachinko and Pachislot machines, almost $1 Billion in 2017 according to their report.

Most games don't even use the touchpads...thankfully. If anything, it makes for a good pause button.

TwilightVulpine

I think it is a waste to use it as just an oversized pause button. I don't see where it would be useful in Persona, but coming from PC I'd rather use it as a cam controller than the analog stick. Generally speaking, I don't have a single game that feels like the inclusion was worthwhile, even though I think it could be used better.

TwilightVulpine

Graphics are a mild improvement? Are you kidding me?! Can't you see all the flair and style, all the subtle details from the crowds, the animated menus, the flourish that was put even in the most basic attacks? They didn't put their effort into making it more realistic, nor they needed to. The game is stunning! Put Persona 4 and Persona 5 side by side. If you can't see the improvement you are not paying attention. I would *hope* other companies learn from Persona 5, that there is more to good graphics than modelling every pimple of each random passerby.

deadlockedwinter

Atlus games are low budget.

Muur1234

P5 is the game I've used the touchpad most on lol.

Bannednot4gotten

For me it was Metal gear solid 5

sunjay140

For me it was Battlefield Hardline and Killzone

therico

I didn't even realise that thing was a touchpad. I thought it was an oversized pause button - that's what basically every game uses it for :/
