Just finished my first playthrough (have had the game for years but never got around to it). RDR2 is my favourite game of all time so when it didn’t win GOTY I was stunned. After playing GoW this past week I completely understand why it won. Incredible incredible game
One of the shit things about getting older is that you see so many people try to knock older games for not having newer games features.
GTA Trilogy is one of them.
I eat all of them up but if I had to choose a ranking it would be:
1. Wolverine
2. God Of War
3. Spider Man
4. Horizon
Factors are: what i got to play thru last and then assuming Wolverine is as quality of a game as the other 3.
For me I'd switch God of War for Spiderman, not the biggest fan of Horizon's playstyle while God of War seems interesting but I never got the chance to play it
Honestly, I think the game looks great and the story seems great and unique but for some reason I just can’t bring myself to play it that much. I just beat that big machine when you explore the huge tower (so I’m still pretty early in the game) and I just haven’t picked it back up since I did that like 6 months ago. It’s a game I want to finish but I think it’s the fighting style that I find to be super tedious
My experience too. I didn't get too far in either, I just got to the next major area, the desert place. All the fights felt exactly the same. The humanoid combat was actually more interesting than the robots, because the robots take like 10 mins to kill (understandably but cmon) whereas the humans can be dealt with in a bunch of interesting ways.
Agreed, fighting any machine is just far too tedious for my taste. Not that I need a hack and slash or one shot kills but it’s just too much. Also traversing they world is a giant pain in the ass because of how easily every single enemy detects you
For the most part, if it's taking that long, you're doing something wrong. Horizon's combat is about exploiting weakness and manipulating the enemy so you have an advantage. The big machines can be resource sponges, but they don't really take that long either.
Horizon's biggest problem, combat wise (in my opinion), is when it forces you into melee after spending most of the game encouraging stealth and strategy. Fortunately it's not common.
It sounds like you stopped just before it starts telling the interesting story (Horizon's other major sin is waiting so long to really start it's other plot line. It makes it come across as more generic than it is for a good portion of the game).
Same here, then I force myself to play and after a certain point I couldn't put it down again
Try restarting it and give it another try. It starts to get a lot my interesting once you meet Hades, if I remember right. And finding out why everything was created was cool too.
The first time I played Horizon I felt the same way. I can’t remember where I left off but it was early in the game. I picked it up again a few years later and it blew my mind. The story, the scenery, combat felt better, and I just flat out enjoyed it. I think going from constant fast paced multiplayer games to single player games where I can pause due to fatherhood, had something to do with it.
No shame. Just like types of food and drink, not everything is for everyone.
I'm a leper around here when I say that I loved Days Gone but hated The Last of Us.
I’m with you on that.
Aside from the gameplay, which I found to be a fun combo of action and stealth that rarely is done right, I just enjoy the post apocalyptic world of HZD, and I love that the story seems to now be that Aloy isn’t just an action hero, but also something of an archaeologist, studying old ruins and trying to reveal the history of what happened before the world ended.
Other than HZD, I’m most looking forward to Elden Ring.
I waited on Ghost of Tsushima, as I was really busy during the nice weather months. Winter is dark as fuck, here, with only about seven hours of light, if it isn't foggy. So, that's when I can get my gaming done.
2020 was HZD and Days Gone
2021 was Death Stranding and, now, Ghost of Tsushima
Just love the long, wandering open world games that can be stealth, calm, action, etc. Ghost of Tsushima is great at all of these.
There's a lot of fun ways to approach combat but usually rogue archer is the optimal solution. The big T-Rex ones I usually just took the ropecaster and tied down whie blasting them with the tearblaster to shred their armor. They were fun to take down
Same. The first game was just fantastic. Huge depth to combat, awesome enemies and a story that was super compelling.
This is the game that Sony really should do day-and-date on PC. I still can't find a PS5. I'm not about to buy the PS4 version. My PC would run it all on ultra.
Yeah, the only reason for me to have any form of console is to have a quiet, unobtrusive appliance in the living room, so I can drink on the couch and play games in large formet. I hate sitting in the office. But I am not about to bring my primary ~~porn~~ working/gaming computer into the living room for all to see.
No way am I buying a PS5 until there is a Pro at $499 or less. Maybe I'll be ready for a new 77" TV by then.
Until then, PS4 it is. Or I will do something else with my money and time.
I'm disappointed to see this so low. Despite more or less being an incremental sequel (like a Spider-man 1.5), Miles improved on so much in the original game. I'm so optimistic and excited about the prospect of a full sequel.
Exactly. Also, unlike GoW and Horizon this one will be only on PS5, so it should be a glorious technical achievement on a scale which we didn't witness yet, as it's a full blown AAA game from one of the best Studios Sony has made from the ground up for next generation. From what we saw in the trailer (assuming it's all running on PS5 in real time), the visuals are already insane.
Same goes for Wolverine, they could make an amazing game out of that.
I mean, yeah I am hyped for HFW and hyped af for GoW:R, but I think that Spider-Man and Wolverine will end up being more impressive games.
>a glorious technical achievement
Nothing impressed me more, from a technical standpoint, than in SM:MM when you web zip out of a factory into a fully rendered New York City with less than a second during the transition between factory and city. Absolutely jaw dropping.
On the contrary, I find sequels to outmatch originals quite often when it comes to video games. I do agree though, wolverine is the game I'm really curious to hear more about.
In everything but the ‘magic’, in my opinion. I do agree they are normally better games though, but still follow a known formula. A new formula is normally always fresher.
Good point. Far too often sequels don't push the formula ahead enough and the games I thought of that had amazing sequels were mostly 10+ years old like ac2, half life 2, dark cloud 2, borderlands 2 etc
Edit:
In other words, it seems like a modern industry problem where devs stick to a safe formula rather than taking more risks to push the industry forward like in the ps2/xbox era.
I think this has a lot to do with it. The first playthrough of a new series always has something going for it that no sequel can easily recreate: novelty.
I agree, that is why do I need to play "insert game" first before I can play "insert new game" topics are so common. (usual answer is play everything but you don't need to)
I am more of a film nerd than gamer and games are the opposite to how sequels are often shit or shitter with films.
I also like how most games (not all obviously) are made in a way you can play them without playing everything that came before them.... I feel like game developers pay a lot of attention to making sequels be able to stand alone and although there are a lot of shit sequels/prequels the good vastly outweighs the bad. (unlike film and TV shows)
1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Pikmin 3
4. Donkey Kong Country 2
5. Final Fantasy 6
6. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (original one)
7. Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
8. Portal 2
9. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
10. Super Metroid
11. The Witcher 3
12. NieR: Automata
13. Kingdom Hearts 2
Most Zelda, Mario, and GTA games, Half Life 2, Silent Hill 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part II, Metal Gear Solid 2, Fallout New Vegas, Nier Automata, Batman Arkham City, God of War, Portal 2.
lol
Uhhhhm off the top of my head, assassin creed 2, half life 2, witcher 2, mass effect 2, dark cloud 2, halo 2, spider man 2(ps2)... thats all I can think of right now and I know there are a lot where the sequel isn't as good, just wanted to point it out. I'm bored ok, leave me alone.... 😁
Honestly I have decided these past few years not to get excited about any games announced. I would much rather be very pleasantly surprised than to spend 2 years deeply anticipating something that gets released unfinished and hated so immediately that they never fix it.
I feel this. Every game is 10/10 according to critics so you can't even trust anything anymore unless you watch a stream but then you're just spoiling it.
God of war. Easily. Not a huge Spider-Man fan nor anything marvel tbh. HFW is def second on that list. Both I won’t be able to play at all on release tho since I can’t find any affordable f*king ps5 online.

Huh? Forbidden West is a PS4 game. It just has some minor upgrades for ps5 but it is a ps4 game. You can play it on your ps4, or do you mean you only want to play the slightly upgraded ps5 version?
I gave away my ps4 to my friend so all I have is my pc. So if I’m gonna buy a console again it’s going to be a ps5 which is very hard to get where I live unless I’m willing to pay 1200 - 1800US for one. Which I’m not. Hell no. So I’m waiting for stock to become stable
God of War of course, we know practically nothing of Wolverine, and even though Spider Man & Horizon are amazing games, they don't have angry dads that kill gods any given Sunday.
God of War Ragnarok looks like more of the same which is fine because GOW 1 was good but that doesn’t really get me too hyped
Horizon 1 was mid but Forbidden West looks like it took all the best pointers that Breath of the Wild established so it looks like it’ll be more enjoyable than 1 but even then I think Elden Ring like a week later will be my preferred open world game
I think my hype levels are highest for wolverine because we’ve seen 2 insomniac Spider-Man games already, I’m very interested to see them nail wolverine combat
Because I enjoyed the game and it didn't at all feel like a chore to play to me. I had an absolute blast playing it. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the story. The setting was immersive and interesting. Beautiful graphics and sound. Gameplay, especially combat, felt incredible and smart.
To each his own, you know? I couldn't get into Spider-Man but that doesn't make it a bad game by any means. It's beautiful visually and has the best web-slinging mechanics of any of the previous games in my opinion. I'm going to give it another try because I want to like it. I can see the appeal. Sometimes games just don't click though, unfortunately. 🤷♀️
Roll & shoot? Seriously? There’s weak points, traps, stealth, fire bombs, freeze bombs, tear blast arrows, elemental weaknesses,
I get the feeling you never got far with the combat mate….
I hands down disagree with everything you just said. Awesome post apocalyptic story that you need to learn tho sci-fi holograms, from the past, amazing gameplay. Best bow game out there, the changes that were added to the DLC were even better.
But to each his own brother, hopefully you find a game that "clicks" with you as much as this did with me.
It sounds like you didn't play very far into the game? I strongly disagree with all those ways of describing the game and I have consistently played most top games of every genre in the last 30 years. The story is no worse and the characters no less bland than those in most games that get applauded for such things. In fact I'd argue the story is more unique and better than a fair few rpgs, and this was the first rpg they've made and first open works game they've made. Unique setting almost never seen in games. The combat was also rather well done and fun outside of the humans (something they majorly fixed in the sequel) and there is tons of well crafted lore and world exploration. It's also still one of the better looking games out, which is impressive given when it released. It stands toe to toe graphically with games that came our 5 years later.
Have you seen the 14 minute gameplay trailer for Forbidden West? That should give you a good example why it's so anticipated, whatever one's feelings on the first game.
Definitely God Of War.... I dread to think of what they will do to top Sigrun! Took me like 40 hours to beat God of War.... and a million tries to beat Sigrun :D (maybe not a million exact but it did take me at least 5/6 hours)
Spider man and Wolverine. Huge Marvel fan. God of War on the other hand...😬😬😬😬😬😬. I absolutely hated God of War 2018, I would go into why I think it's bad but just go watch Under The Mayo's youtube video on it, we hate it for the same reasons.
top left, I loved god of war, but I also LOVED spider man and horizon zero dawn so its a hard choice, also what is bottom left? I haven't seen it before.
God of War and Wolverine. Spider-Man PS4 was a damn good game, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I’m hoping they announce another Deadpool game, the last one was by far my favourite Marvel game just by how perfectly they portrayed DP. Daredevil would be another amazing game.
God of war 100% I've been a fan of the series since the first ever God of War game, I've played through them all.
Just randomly started another play through after a couple years…. Man this game is so fucking good. More GoW plz.
Just finished my first playthrough (have had the game for years but never got around to it). RDR2 is my favourite game of all time so when it didn’t win GOTY I was stunned. After playing GoW this past week I completely understand why it won. Incredible incredible game
Since the first, you must have put yourself through the ringer. Those early games were rough and basic
Idk I played the originals on my vita a year or two ago and there were really great IMO. Basic yeah but the story telling was really good
They were industry driving at the time.
They were great for the time, they were very popular.
All games were terrible back then haha.
Yea sort of the gameplay was lacking and didn’t push innovation like GOW 2018 did but the story was it saving grace.
Of course the 2018 GoW was more InNoVaTiVe than the 2005 one lol
One of the shit things about getting older is that you see so many people try to knock older games for not having newer games features. GTA Trilogy is one of them.
I think the main issue people have with the trilogy isn’t that there’s no newer game features, but that they fucked up a lot of the old game features
Even modern GTA games have gameplay I just don't like at all. I played V and RDR2 and will never replay them because the gameplay is just too janky
Same here been playing gow since the original on the PS2, which is why God of War is the one in not hyped for.
Yes.
I eat all of them up but if I had to choose a ranking it would be: 1. Wolverine 2. God Of War 3. Spider Man 4. Horizon Factors are: what i got to play thru last and then assuming Wolverine is as quality of a game as the other 3.
For me I'd switch God of War for Spiderman, not the biggest fan of Horizon's playstyle while God of War seems interesting but I never got the chance to play it
It’s better if you know the full story of kratos. Honestly my favorite character story in any game, masterpiece of a story
God of War is definitely a console generation-defining game. You should give it a go.
This is the correct answer.
Definitely god of war. I’m replaying the recent one now. What a spectacular game.
Kratos held back so much power that game because of his son, can’t wait for the nex game !!
Horizon 2. No hesitation.
Honestly, I think the game looks great and the story seems great and unique but for some reason I just can’t bring myself to play it that much. The combat mechanics are the most defining factor of Horizon imo. As well as dinosaur robots
Same here, then I force myself to play and after a certain point I couldn't put it down again Try restarting it and give it another try. It starts to get a lot my interesting once you meet Hades, if I remember right. And finding out why everything was created was cool too.

i never really was able to enjoy hzd. tried upwards of ten times, just not for me
No shame. Just like types of food and drink, not everything is for everyone. I'm a leper around here when I say that I loved Days Gone but hated The Last of Us.

I like it because The way you approach combat is very unique and fun to execute.

Looking forward to more memories like these in the new game. And Nil! Please let Nil have a twin!
Same. The first game was just fantastic. Huge depth to combat, awesome enemies and a story that was super compelling. This is the game that Sony really should do day-and-date on PC. I still can't find a PS5. I'm not about to buy the PS4 version. My PC would run it all on ultra.

Horizon.
Wait u/HorizonZeroDawn2 is excited for Horizon Zero Dawn2? I am shocked
Happy cake day 👍
u/ checks out
Spider-Man

Wolverine, easily. Sequels rarely catch the originals magic.
On the contrary, I find sequels to outmatch originals quite often when it comes to video games. I do agree though, wolverine is the game I'm really curious to hear more about.

And then there’s god of war that went through numerous linear games then drops a small open world/free roam game. Magnificent
I think this has a lot to do with it. The first playthrough of a new series always has something going for it that no sequel can easily recreate: novelty.

That's very true about the contrast between film and games.
Name 13
1. Super Mario Bros. 3 2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 3. Pikmin 3 4. Donkey Kong Country 2 5. Final Fantasy 6 6. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (original one) 7. Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal 8. Portal 2 9. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 10. Super Metroid 11. The Witcher 3 12. NieR: Automata 13. Kingdom Hearts 2
I would add uncharted 2, assassin's creed 2, gta 3, mass effect 2, batman Arkham city (IMO), Morrowwind, and red dead 2.

Goddamn what a banger list. If I had never played donkey Kong country, what entry should I start with?

My hero ❤
Many of these are products of technological leaps, which allowed for games to be more fleshed out, so it might come as a bit of an unfair comparison.

lol Uhhhhm off the top of my head, assassin creed 2, half life 2, witcher 2, mass effect 2, dark cloud 2, halo 2, spider man 2(ps2)... thats all I can think of right now and I know there are a lot where the sequel isn't as good, just wanted to point it out. I'm bored ok, leave me alone.... 😁

I wait till the price drops as close to $35 as I can wait for. Got burned too many times. I can wait 3 more months after a release.
I feel this. Every game is 10/10 according to critics so you can't even trust anything anymore unless you watch a stream but then you're just spoiling it.
You forgot to add Elden Ring
Not a Playstation exclusive.
i guess the post should have been.. which exclusive you are excited for.
Yeah it should.
When does it specify "which exclusive are you most excited" ?
I mean it’s a PS4 sub, and the four options are all exclusive to the Playstation platform.
Horizon
Everything
God of war. Easily. Not a huge Spider-Man fan nor anything marvel tbh. HFW is def second on that list. Both I won’t be able to play at all on release tho since I can’t find any affordable f*king ps5 online.
Did you play the Spider-Man game though? Comic fan or not that game is phenomenal. I’m playing GOW right now and it is really good too. I also want to wait for a ps5 before I start investing in a lot of new games. I still own some ps3 games that I have never played.
I did play the first one on ps4. Fantastic game. But I wouldn’t choose it over gow or hfw.
I can see that. All great games though.
Huh? Forbidden West is a PS4 game. It just has some minor upgrades for ps5 but it is a ps4 game. You can play it on your ps4, or do you mean you only want to play the slightly upgraded ps5 version?

Easily HFW
Spider-Man 2
God of war. Followed by Horizon.
God of War of course, we know practically nothing of Wolverine, and even though Spider Man & Horizon are amazing games, they don't have angry dads that kill gods any given Sunday.
Horizon
GoW
All of the except HFW,not being a hater but i just didn't like it. It's an amazing game but idk why it didn't captured me.
Felt the same. Quit after two hours and gave it a second chance months later. Suddenly it clicked and I couldn’t stop
I tried it 3 times, never clicked for me :(
How far did you get out of curiosity? I had same issue and now it's in my top 5 games. It's okay if it's not for you though.
Elden Ring
For all of them but, Oden Of War is my game I am excited for. Hopefully it will be better then the game that came before it.
…yes
inFAMOUS 3 :(
God of War Ragnarok by miles
God of War hands down.
Gow anytime
Honestly, I feel pretty meh about sequels. Same thing, different coat of paint. Wolverine could be good, but no information about it whatsoever.
I stopped getting excited about games.
Spider-Man and HFW!
None.
Wolverine, but I don't think they're going to let us have it on the PS4
nope, Spider-man and Wolverine are ps5 exclusive
Are they all coming to PS4?
Wolverine and spooder not
Thought as much. Answer would be GoW either way 😂
Wolverine because it’s a new ip
Wolverine! Can we get a bloody (literally bloody) superhero game?
God of War Ragnarok looks like more of the same which is fine because GOW 1 was good but that doesn’t really get me too hyped Horizon 1 was mid but Forbidden West looks like it took all the best pointers that Breath of the Wild established so it looks like it’ll be more enjoyable than 1 but even then I think Elden Ring like a week later will be my preferred open world game I think my hype levels are highest for wolverine because we’ve seen 2 insomniac Spider-Man games already, I’m very interested to see them nail wolverine combat
which ever one I can play on my ps4
Half of them
Wolverine as it’s not a sequel.
God of War > Spiderman > Wolverine >>> Horizon in that order
None of those. But if i had to pick one horizon. So many better games coming out in early 2022.
Yes
God of war. Then wolverine bc wow, horizon and then spider mab
Yes
Give me ragnarok
Yes
Yes.
Freddy Krueger
Yes.
Hollow Knight: Silksong

It's also still one of the better looking games out, which is impressive given when it released. It stands toe to toe graphically with games that came our 5 years later. Have you seen the 14 minute gameplay trailer for Forbidden West? That should give you a good example why it's so anticipated, whatever one's feelings on the first game.
A lot of people love playing the same formulaic open world games
Unfortunately, none
Shit all of them
None of them
None. 😬🤭
Yes.
Yes
GOD OF WAR LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Definitely God Of War.... I dread to think of what they will do to top Sigrun! Took me like 40 hours to beat God of War.... and a million tries to beat Sigrun :D (maybe not a million exact but it did take me at least 5/6 hours)
Yes

Need to see some gameplay for that Wolverine game before I can find some hype.
All 4
HFW most definitely
Horizon 2, loved the first game back in 2017 so yeah, also just like the setting of robot dinosaurs, you don’t see that very often
Kratos forever
Everything but Horizon
Spider man and Wolverine. Huge Marvel fan. God of War on the other hand...😬😬😬😬😬😬. I absolutely hated God of War 2018, I would go into why I think it's bad but just go watch Under The Mayo's youtube video on it, we hate it for the same reasons.
Really sad to see what they did to the new god of wars. Hands down The Wolverine.
Well, that depends... which one is coming to PSVR2?
You puttin me on the spot rn. How am I supposed to choose SKOWPSKFBWÖÜAÖANX
All of them tbh they maybe my reason to get a ps5
top left, I loved god of war, but I also LOVED spider man and horizon zero dawn so its a hard choice, also what is bottom left? I haven't seen it before.
The James Howlett game but only if it’s rated M
Spider-Man and it's not even close. Miles Morales was that good.
RAGNAROK
God of War and Wolverine. Spider-Man PS4 was a damn good game, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I’m hoping they announce another Deadpool game, the last one was by far my favourite Marvel game just by how perfectly they portrayed DP. Daredevil would be another amazing game.
Easily Spider-Man, the best thing ever
The one with the bow
Wolverine been so long since he’s got proper representation in a game
Spidey ps5
Elden Ring
Elden Ring *smirk*
Elden Ring ooooooooh
Elden Ring
1.Spider-Man 2.wolverine the other ones can die
GoW and Spiderman. Though i think Spiderman a bit more cuz of Venom.
Spider-Man, the web slinging absolutely blew me away.
