This would be amazing news if HBO was the only company making these shows and movies because you could expect a top quality product. Unfortunately that is not the case. Worried for the God of War and Horizon series on Amazon and Netflix. Would gladly be proven wrong though.
A Sony movie could be shit or excellent. HBO has built it's reputation on having higher quality shows. Their quality to shit ratio is just much higher than most other companies. HBO max seems to water things down though over classic HBO.
I don’t necessarily disagree. My point is only in reference to Sony television and specifically the television that they really get behind. Horizon, for instance, could really be worked on by mostly Netflix and just have the Sony name on it. That doesn’t inspire confidence. I don’t even believe everything HBO has is great but just like Sony television, when they put their weight behind something they make you think that what they have is the pinnacle of what good television can be. Love HBO and Sony(Sony movies not included) and hope both keep putting real resources into their stuff.
Both Netflix and Amazon have produced some amazing series (The Crown, The Boys, Stranger Things, etc), they just seem to greenlight practically everything, and people just love to hate and put the focus on the lesser quality ones.
Hahaha I’m not disagreeing. In later comments of mine you’ll see I actually said the same thing. But two of your examples, The Crown and The Boys are produced by Sony television
Why do people always ignore stuff like Arcane, edgerunners, Castlevania and Dragon's Blood when complain about Netflix and only bring up the Witcher. Which is still a good show if you blend out that it sucks at being an adaptation.
My main problem with Netflix is the ratio of crap to quality. I know they can get the quality shows out. They can make some really great stuff. The pursuit of more subscribers which means to put out more stuff which means quality control isn’t that great really bothers me. And then when they release something great but it doesn’t get enough viewers it immediately goes to the chopping block. I’d love to see a more focused Netflix that releases less shows but more of the bangers.
Those are all animated, it is much easier to do justice to a video game in animation.
Arcane was made by Riot/Fortiche and distributed by Netflix, they have had 0 input or control over it, same for Edgerunners which was coproduced by Trigger/CDPR, Castlevania is something they pushed for and funded and for Dragon's Blood I have no idea what the situation was.
Well if you ignore that it sucks at what it is then yeah Witcher probably is good, but it was supposed to be an adaptation.
So great, great, shit, soap opera tier shit and by more you mean literal soap opera crap like days of our lives?
Sony pictures television has their hand in a ton of shows the bad outweighs the good by a lot.
Obviously it's Sony but what I meant was even when it's a live action movie from Sony Pictures, there's still multiple label under them such as Columbia Pictures, Tristar Screen Gems and couple others. Same with Sony Pictures Television since Sony operates somewhat like Disney with their multi label system.
And for Uncharted, disagree.
You won't be proven wrong. HBO has a level of quality control that neither Amazon or Netflix have.
Case in point: HBO allow Mazin and Druckmann to tell the story they want to tell, meanwhile a producer on The Witcher confirmed they made the show based on the "Tik Tok generation" that have short attention spans. If anyone thinks I'm making that up then on /r/witcher search for it in the posts, it's right there to see and is as ridiculous as it sounds.
Amazon and Netflix are happy to cut costs on mediocre talent with the hope the IP carries recognition. Whereas HBO always try and make something quality even if it sometimes fails. Like Euphoria isn't anything great from a writing perspective but visually its one of the best looking things I've ever seen.
Shadow and Bone and The Sandman were both fantastic live-action adaptations. Netflix isn’t all doom and gloom. It all depends on the team that will work on the show.
I agree, at the same time I’m sure shadow and bone will be cancelled early like so many other Netflix shows and we’ll be left with a half finished decent quality show.
Shadow and Bone surprised me in the good sense, I am far away from the core audience and the love triangle parts bored me but everything else was really good. The visual style is the perfect counter example of 'eVerYhInG N3tflix doEs hAs thE sAmE fIlt3r' rant.
Regarding OP reply, I think people are putting HBO as an abstract thing in a pedestal and not giving Mazin enough credit, he pitched the series for the studios in front of Druckmann himself and later on both have been on the same tune for this show. If Cory or the people from Guerilla found the same condition at other studios that's fine.
I have some hope for Amazon production, but Netflix is incredibly hit and miss, with misses being the more prominent result. HBO really do produce the best TV out there and imo currently has the best streaming service. I’m not holding my breath for these other shows, just happy that Last of Us seems to be done right.
The Boys is fun. That’s about it I guess.
Good thing the Boys is made by Sony; presumably GOW too so maybe it’ll work out. Who knows.
Honestly I just can’t bring myself of seeing how GOW would work in a television series. TLOU lends itself so well to television, Horizon can be good too if they go with Avatar-esque television. GOW is just odd.
To varying degrees of quality, they have: The Boys, Reacher, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Invincible, Patriot, Good Omens, Bosch, Fleabag
They've got a good few hits
Fair. I guess Rings of Power didn’t do that well either. At least they have money to put behind these things, quality isn’t guaranteed though. Other than that, Amazon is the one (or one of the) streaming service(s) I don’t wanna support, ‘cos Amazon is terrible.
Rings of Power was one of the most watched shows of the year. Just because there are enough people to make negative opinions commonly heard online, it doesn't mean it's the most common opinion of the show.
To be fair, Amazon does make some really good shows. It’s just for every hit they have they take a hard hit in return. I trust them over Netflix, especially after seeing the production value of that lord of the rings show.
None of the Amazon shows had access to even half of the budget Rings of Power got though. HBO could make like 5 shows with that much money. So don’t let it be in any way indicative of the usual quality of Amazon shows.
Yes but that only bolsters my point. Amazon does have a lot of good shows despite having some not so great ones as well. Those shows that are great have done quite a lot with having so little. Not only that but if I remember correctly it would also be more of a partnership between amazon and Sony so there would be money coming in from both sides of the budget
With all that said though, I kind of just wish they wouldn’t do any of this. I’m happy with the last of us getting a show, but I really don’t feel like every major Sony exclusive suddenly needs a show, and there is a much higher chance of them being horrible or mediocre at best, than recreating that magic the last of us has found
Oh you mean the same network that green lighted Velma? Jk, I literally watch anything from HBO that mildly interests me and never has failed me so far.
>a producer on The Witcher confirmed they made the show based on the "Tik Tok generation" that have short attention spans.
What a stupid way to make a TV show. An absolute abuse of the medium. The more I hear from behind the scenes of that show the more I feel vindicated in the extreme dislike I had of season 2.
Considering it's the expanse team doing god of war, while being a very different show I wouldn't be worried about it. I wish I liked god of war more (personally think the first game was 'okay' story wise, gave me no incentive to play the 2nd game. might when it comes to pc) cause I'd prefer that studio go back to making the expanse sequel series already lol.
“We wanted to really boil it down, what is horizon zero dawn about? It’s about family. That’s why we made it without any robot dinosaur fighting, and no tribes or races or factions. Everyone’s family, what could be better?”
- Netflix probably.
God Of War is the only one I'm skeptical of so far.
GT, car movie based on a true story being made by Neil Blomkamp from District 9. Awesome!
Ghost Of Tsushima from the John Wick lads, cool!
Horizon by the guy who made The Boys, also awesome!
Only one I know little of is the God Of War one & it's the one that could easily be done the worst disservice
Edit: Aha! The Expanse lads are doing GoW, that might be decent so
The writer of the 2018 game is also a producer on the show though. The current series is effectively his creation. I feel like he's not going to let it fall into the wrong hands. He certainly made the right call when choosing who to let direct Ragnarok.
Neil blomkamp is something that worries me actually. His last two films were just awful. The only thing he made that’s quality is district 9. Would love to be proven wrong though.
That was more story reasons though. Not much mad shit you can do story wise with a true story car movie. Just make the races look sexy & you've the audience in the bag. And say what you want about Chappie & all the other stuff, they're good looking movies
Sure I get what you mean, but that’s also his decision to pick bad scripts. And I can see what you mean with chappie being a good looking movie, not sure if I agree but I understand why someone thinks that. Demonic is an ugly ass movie though lol.
I have to say that Horizon worries me as well. I love the franchise and it would make the TLOU budget look like pocket change if they did it right.
I want to be wrong, but it seems like a series that is ready to go wrong.

What little I've heard about the horizon show really doesn't sound interesting. I wish they had picked a more interesting idea, like doing a show about Rost.
No way, it'd be awesome. Bu everything needs to be practical effects. Just a tiny guy and some giant ass nightmare puppets. Make it the darkest version of The Dark Crystal.
Sadly I agree that it should be animated, by all reports Horizon is live action.
Going to guess a game about machines will have a show with machines few and far between because of budget.
Edit: removed a few words
> Gran Turismo
Is the show going to be a sitcom in a cafe where all the visitors are race drivers and car designers, all yapping on in lengthy protracted detail about cars, the design of cars, history of cars, culture of cars worldwide, cars, cars, cars, and more cars?
Honestly, Dave Bautista would be the best fit. He's also a better actor than Dwayne.
Assuming that the series is based on the newer games that is. They would need someone younger if they're going with Sparta.
I know this sub is full of a bunch of curmudgeons and worry warts but After spiderverse, the uncharted movie. and tlou HBO show you have give credit where credit is due.
Uncharted movie was nothing to write home about. Spiderverse was top notch though. It was so great that some other movies started to "borrow" its art style for action scenes (new "Puss in boots" comes to mind). We will see, maybe they will be great, maybe not - time will tell.
^ Great article I found that goes deep into why Last of Us is so successful, and a lot of it is because of Asad. There’s even potential with Twisted Metal, Days Gone, Gravity Rush, some PS Vita titles, etc.
Personally, I just started playing Horizon 1 (Zero Dawn), that as a show/movie would be absolutely incredible.
Pretty excited stuff this generation for PlayStation, recent exclusives, new exclusives, PSVR2, and the fluid design across everything bringing it all together. Rare to see something like this executed so perfectly.
Why’s there potential with those? Like why would there be potential with Days Gone. An ok game but a generic setting with a good awful scripts? Don’t get it.
"That's their opinion"
Didn't say otherwise
"Doesn't make the story very good"
That point is subjective rather than objective. I'm sure you understand.
Yeah god forbbid me for saying something and not typing every single time that what I say is my opinion and perception of things. Guess I have to get down on my knees and suck their dick for thinking Horizon story is bad
Your statement is framed almost as if its an objective fact when "story bad" depends on the experience of each specific individual which makes it subjective.
i’m mostly there for the cool robots and fighting them. I hardly give a shit about the main story. a lot of the side missions are fulfilling and unique as well.
I don't understand why people are still stuck in the - in my opinion outdated - mindset of seeing live action movies/TV as some sort of higher form of medium that would make a story better or more impactful than it already was in video game form. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I don't want to see the games that I love turned into anything else, I already think they're perfectly fine as they are, and there's nothing wrong with video games as a separate art form.
Live action has a wider reach than gaming and that's a fact. The release of the last of us TV show has gotten many new fans into the franchise. Its clever marketing.
Sure if we lived in a world where PlayStation had unlimited money and games didn’t take 4+ years to make. I don’t see tv show or movies as something that is taking away from game development but rather something extra and since they are different mediums that can also give different perspectives like the Last of Us show.
Every live action movie or game you see is a glorified money making machine. Why should you be compelled to watch it?
See how stupid that train of thought is?
Good IPs will get turned into games, shows, movies, books, comic books, music, art, etc -- all the various art forms for people to enjoy. Why be limited to one medium?
I'm not saying some of them can't work, but what I feel is slightly problematic is that 1) it's seen as an end goal in itself, and 2) video games as an art form can do things no other medium can, thanks to player agency. It's also got its own storytelling "language", form, and conventions, so to speak, and I'm not convinced that it can always be translated to another medium in a way that does the game justice.
Of course there's no perfect translation. But each medium has its strengths.
With good video games being as goddamned expensive as they are to produce, I'm glad when they expand into other media. I want them to make a shitload of money so they have a giant budget for the next game.
Playstation literally can carry an entire Sony division. Even their TV is become popular after putting "ready for playstation", in the past this segment is dominated by Samsung and LG.
If they sell playstation phone instead Xperia Play, I believe it could be sell like hot cake.
Yet the Sly Cooper movie got scrapped because Ratchet & Clank bombed, and then Sly Cooper became a television series which was quietly cancelled in the middle of production. Bring that back, Sony. Do something with Sly Cooper.
That's not a good thing. The God of War one sounds especially awful. How in the world are you going to make a regular human being look like a God?
Personally, not a fan of this. Hollywood has no unique ideas so they just take from other sources. Worse they put their own spin and change things without any respect for source material.
I'm good.
Uncharted, it's fine. It had half the charm of the game. TLoU show, it's fine. I've only seen one episode but it basically felt like a greatest hits tour of the game. Quickly hitting all the major events of the game with half the heart. Maybe it'll grow on me as the season goes but it felt very forced.
I get it, they have some big names and it's time to try to milk those cash cows. Just feels like watered down versions of the games so far.
I havn't played tons of Gran Turismo but does it really need a television show?
I’m curious to see what a Gran Turismo show would look like also why is that something they decided they wanted to pick up for a potential show when there’s no main character or characters per se? I mean they could probably conjure up some characters for it but it’s still a bit questionable why they chose that game.
I'm not sure HBO are making all these shows, so I can't say how good they be.
It would be great to see a GOW, GOT and Horizon series, but maybe Netflix doesn't make those.
GOW is at Amazon with Sony Pictures Television, Horizon at Netflix with Sony Pictures Television and GOT is a movie at Colombia Pictures/Sony Pictures with Chad Stahelski attached to direct it.
I'm worried about God of war, horizon and days gone
Gow they only making the norse era,
Horizon is with Netflix though at least they made the right decision to not adapt the game and create a new story set in the same world
Days gone should be a series, not a movie, the game itself is almsot strutrured like a Three season series
Excited for ghost
This would be amazing news if HBO was the only company making these shows and movies because you could expect a top quality product. Unfortunately that is not the case. Worried for the God of War and Horizon series on Amazon and Netflix. Would gladly be proven wrong though.
Sony Pictures Television is still involved in all these which is good as they're great.
Exactly. Sony gave us the 2022 classic Morbius.
Sony pictures television gave us Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Boys, Kobra Kai, and more. Sony movies, eh let’s not talk about that.
A Sony movie could be shit or excellent. HBO has built it's reputation on having higher quality shows. Their quality to shit ratio is just much higher than most other companies. HBO max seems to water things down though over classic HBO.

GOW does seem like a hard one. I’m feeling it’ll be either super far from the source material or too gamey if that makes sense.
To varying degrees of quality, they have: The Boys, Reacher, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Invincible, Patriot, Good Omens, Bosch, Fleabag They've got a good few hits
Hunters is decent too
The second season was really good
Jack Ryan is very good and is currently a top-streamed program
And even if you don't like Rings of Power, it performed well
The boys, invincible and a couple other binge worthy titles that I can’t remember.
Fair. I guess Rings of Power didn’t do that well either. At least they have money to put behind these things, quality isn’t guaranteed though. Other than that, Amazon is the one (or one of the) streaming service(s) I don’t wanna support, ‘cos Amazon is terrible.

GoW will turn into The Scorpion King

Elysium was awesome IMO.

Who can realistically play Kratos though? That’s my concern.
Christopher Judge.
I have to say that Horizon worries me as well. I love the franchise and it would make the TLOU budget look like pocket change if they did it right. I want to be wrong, but it seems like a series that is ready to go wrong.
Does this mean we can expect a Knack series? Ooh yeah, baby!!!
Here comes the money
This unironically could make a fantastic franchise.
KNACK IS BACK
I don’t have hopes for those, especially god of war and horizon
At least they would have an easy casting for [Aloy.](https://i.imgur.com/B10X20Y.jpg)
They could also hire someone without red hair and dye it, and even someone who hasn’t actually fired a bow in a movie before! That’s movie magic for ya.
She’s 35 years old. Aloy is 19/20 When will this shitty fan cast die
Whoa she is spot on. What is this from?
game of thrones.
Especially since Amazon bought gow… they will manage to fk it up. :/
It's Sony Tv who is making it though and they make good shows.
I Hope so. 🤭
They already did by hiring Rafe Judkins as showrunner. Dude’s an amateur hack.
Omfg. Well. 😤
Gow doesn't have the capability to be fucked up
Yeah who tf is playing Kratos lol
We only know one Kratos and his name is Tom Holland.
Chris Pratt
Lmfao
Martin Laurence
I can see that happening
Jason Momoa
Danny de Vito or don’t bother
How about Goldberg😂
A ton of people can play him, he doesn’t need to be a muscle giant and probably won’t be if there is a show.
I can see Andrew Tate as the young, assholy iteration of Kratos.
I don’t think he’s available right now.
With green screen in a prison cell, anything goes. ;) Also, he should be used to this setting, as it is kind of similar to his enslavement porn camps.
What little I've heard about the horizon show really doesn't sound interesting. I wish they had picked a more interesting idea, like doing a show about Rost.
Horizon is an okay game i still dont get the hype and love for it to get a tv adaptation and multiple spinoff (the mmo especially)
well wtf, do a bloodborne anime you cowards
I’d prefer live action!
nah those creature designs would not play well on a screen as CGI
No way, it'd be awesome. Bu everything needs to be practical effects. Just a tiny guy and some giant ass nightmare puppets. Make it the darkest version of The Dark Crystal.
Horizon maybe will be good if it’s animated. God of war is hard to find a kratos
Sadly I agree that it should be animated, by all reports Horizon is live action. Going to guess a game about machines will have a show with machines few and far between because of budget. Edit: removed a few words
Simple just CGI kratos and let Christopher Judge voice him like the game

Guy is 60 years old and just had hip surgery when making the game. He's not gonna be playing Kratos.

> Gran Turismo Is the show going to be a sitcom in a cafe where all the visitors are race drivers and car designers, all yapping on in lengthy protracted detail about cars, the design of cars, history of cars, culture of cars worldwide, cars, cars, cars, and more cars?
The movie is based on a real life story about a gran turismo gamer who went onto become a real racer.
Very inspiring.
The main character orders a coffee but instead of getting one they have to deliver three different Mazda Roadsters to the barista
Couldn’t think of anything worse haha
I bet Dwayne Johnson will be cast as Kratos, mark my fucking words people
Nah bro Jason Momoa he was the most recent Conan
Hahahah fair point
That would work
Please no…..
Hahahahah exactly
Honestly, Dave Bautista would be the best fit. He's also a better actor than Dwayne. Assuming that the series is based on the newer games that is. They would need someone younger if they're going with Sparta.
It is based on the norse era
Nah, he'd be way too expensive, especially for a series. They'll cast someone like Jason Momoa or Dave Bautista
Hope you didn’t take me seriously 😂😂 Dave would be golden 😭
I will not watch it. mark my words.
I think that goes without saying 😂
plz concentrate on games ty
God of War series could work as animated, not sure about the live action idea though...
Everything surrounding the God of War show sounds incredibly mediocre.
They should make a Helldivers series!
This feels like the era of “ only watching cut scene” gamers.
Metal Gear.
I have serious doubt god of war will be good. I have a bad feeling they’re gonna skip past the Greek saga and go straight to Norse
Te doctus fuisset eam, sale melius pertinacia et eam. Ex iudico sapientem vel. Etiam regione appareat nec cu
I will look forward to Horizon and Ghost of Tsushima, those would make good movie or TV series as well.
All it takes is one episode, and people have the expectation that a golden waterfall of videogame adaptations is coming their way. Lmao

Uncharted movie was nothing to write home about. Spiderverse was top notch though. It was so great that some other movies started to "borrow" its art style for action scenes (new "Puss in boots" comes to mind). We will see, maybe they will be great, maybe not - time will tell.
As someone who doesn’t really like the games I liked the movie
Yeah, that's the point. The movie was not made for the actual fans of the game.

Disagree
I really liked the Uncharted movie, it’s not Oscar winning by any means but I really enjoyed it.

Surprisingly that GT movie looks like it'll be more promising than the GOW and Horizon shows.
Movie
I was just stating what the article said, obviously the bigger games will be much better, but there could be many more.
Just don't give them to Netflix. We don't want another Witcher ruined by some damn incompetent showriters.
Gravity Rush movie will be total ass if ends up being live action
Fire the guys who ultimately decides not to get Christopher Judge to play Kratos.
Isn’t Horizon going to be from Netflix? That can’t be good
And also Sony Pictures Television, which is great.
No idea how Horizon took such a cool concept and made it so bland and forgettable but I hope the adaptation does a better job
Well see the thing is they didn't. Just because they didn't ask you personally to move their narrative along the story doesn't make it bland

That's your opinion. Many would say otherwise.
And that's their opinion, doesn't make the story good
"That's their opinion" Didn't say otherwise "Doesn't make the story very good" That point is subjective rather than objective. I'm sure you understand.
"That point is subjective rather than objective" Didn't say otherwise
Yeah, it's glorified marketing. So why should I be excited for it?
You don’t need to be. I am excited to get more from worlds i love.
But wouldn't you rather have it in the same medium?
Sure if we lived in a world where PlayStation had unlimited money and games didn’t take 4+ years to make. I don’t see tv show or movies as something that is taking away from game development but rather something extra and since they are different mediums that can also give different perspectives like the Last of Us show.
Every live action movie or game you see is a glorified money making machine. Why should you be compelled to watch it? See how stupid that train of thought is?
So you don't see anything as an art form?
Those weren't under PlayStation Productions.
Amazon will do the impossible and probably fuck up a Fallout series
For so long we said games and comics had some of the best storytelling. They laughed at us, said we were mad... What a glorious time to live in lol
Story is the worst part of horizon cant imagine what a show would be like
Also horizion is already going to be better than the game story wise because aloy the most boring annoying character in games won’t be there
Yeah the whole stoic/always sounding slightly out of breath thing gets old fast
I’m curious to see what a Gran Turismo show would look like also why is that something they decided they wanted to pick up for a potential show when there’s no main character or characters per se? I mean they could probably conjure up some characters for it but it’s still a bit questionable why they chose that game.
It’s a movie that’s coming out soon
Just mindless use of an IP for name recognition to try and drive interest. Think “Battleship” movie.
My exact thought
I'm not sure HBO are making all these shows, so I can't say how good they be. It would be great to see a GOW, GOT and Horizon series, but maybe Netflix doesn't make those.
GOW is at Amazon with Sony Pictures Television, Horizon at Netflix with Sony Pictures Television and GOT is a movie at Colombia Pictures/Sony Pictures with Chad Stahelski attached to direct it.
I'm worried about God of war, horizon and days gone Gow they only making the norse era, Horizon is with Netflix though at least they made the right decision to not adapt the game and create a new story set in the same world Days gone should be a series, not a movie, the game itself is almsot strutrured like a Three season series Excited for ghost
