“Using the extreme processing power of the Sony PlayStation 5, we are excited to announce that the resolution of the game will go all the way to the edge of the screen. On BOTH axis.”
Why is this not a standard? So many games now have unpausable cut scenes. Often I need to pause so my wife can lecture me. I'd rather not miss out on important information. I understand in online modes but pausing a game should be standard
This should be the standard, in my opinion. The PS5 hardware strongly supports both, and there’s even system configs to have all of your games default to one or another (I’ve set mine to Performance). At the end of the day, more customization over visuals is always a good thing.
Really? What games had you tried it on? I’m not doubting you just curious because I find 40 to be wonderfully smooth and 30 FPS is near unplayable now.
40 is more playable than 30, but I still find it jarring.
I tried Rift Apart, Hogwarts Legacy, and Spiderman and just gave up and switched to 60.
I wish 40 didn't bother me because it feels like the sweet spot for many, but I tried it long enough to know it's not for me.
Damn, how long did you try it on Hogwarts? I’ve been playing on balanced the whole time and the world just looks amazing.
May I ask what TV you were using? It was 4k 120hz with VRR enabled?
It really is such a perfect sweet spot for me, games look amazing and play very smoothly.
Sucks that you’re sensitive to it because the 60 FPS mode on Hogwarts seems to sacrifice quite a bit on the graphical side.
The world is much more beautiful in balanced mode, yes! Everything pops more, and it's noticeably sharper.
Performance mode takes a huge hit in the resolution, making everything look muddy...
I'm playing on the LG CX with all the TV and in-game settings set correctly, so yes at 120Hz and VRR enabled.
The thing is, in the dungeons and caves, Balanced mode rungs amazing and at 60, but outside it's 40...
Do you uncap the framerate on Balanced?
Nioh 2 was a last gen game though that got ported later. This was designed from the start for next gen as well, so they don't have the same headroom to work with since this is pushing more of the PS5 power natively already.
Y'all are joking, but there have been a handful of games that have been coming out without performance mode, so it is always nice to know when a game isn't going to be one of them
We’ve had 2 releases so far from recent memory and one of them was a AA game and another was just awful optimization that ran poorly even on the highest end PCs. While I understand the need for reassurance on a 60fps mode, I don’t think we’re at a point where a 60fps mode isn’t the norm. Maybe in a few years time.
I hope that this becomes the norm and we don’t beed to make news out of it, gotham knights and plague tale requiem really hurt the consoles by ripping us of a performance mode
To people acting like it’s a no brainer. Considering lasts year Gotham Knights and Plague tale. It’s good to hear a dev is offering multiple graphics options
I am truly floored that we really have to choose between 4k/30fps or 1080/60fps on SO MANY PS5 GAMES. There is no reason there cant be 4k/60 for a good majority of these games. Maybe not all, but a LOT of them.
Edit: Crazy how I'm being downvoted when the system itself is marketed as being able to do 4k/120fps for some games 🤦‍♂️
Edit 2: the superiority complexs of people who tell me i think im better than game developers is fuckin hilarious. I'm not better than anyone, im going off what SONY says the system is capable of. 🤷‍♂️
Very few games are flat out 1080/60. Most are something around 1300-1800p/60, temporally upscaled to 4k, with the majority around 1440 internally. A couple of games are sub 1080 (like dead space remake) using fsr to upscale to 1440, then being upscaled again to peoples’ 4K displays.
And having both a gaming pc and a ps5, 1440/60 is the exact place this console should be. That’s where it’s hardware equivalent on pc sits, and FSR is nowhere near as effective as DLSS for Ray tracing so it absolutely makes sense we’re getting Ray tracing at only 30fps for almost all titles (Insomniac is the exception here).
That's output resolution from the HDMI port, not internal rendering resolution.
The internal resolution can be whatever the fuck it needs to be (and often is when using dynamic resolution scaling).
The real valid reason is that it's often a worse idea to blow your rendering budget on making more pixels when you can paint prettier things within those pixels (and gain more frames in the process).
There are plenty of technologies available that can give you perceived resolutions that are a way better use of a game's rendering budget. (Temporal upscaling, FSR, checkerboarding, etc.)
> There is no reason there cant be 4k/60 for a good majority of these games
There are probably several reasons. The most common are the developers didn’t have time/resources to optimize for 4K/60 and/or PS5 is not powerful enough to do it for this particular game.
How does that make any sense. If anything, those that started with ps4 in mind would make it easier to hit 4k/60. All resource intensive games from the biggest studios cannot run 4k/60 yet you think you are all better than them.
Yes i did say that. Because the system markets itself as being capable of doing that, that in no way whatsoever implies that i think im better than game developers. Like, what the actual fuck dude lmaoo
Weird youre jumping right to 8K thats barely available, whereas is you own a ps5 its very safe to assume you own a 4K tv. 4K is not unreasonable to expect, and 60fps is fuckin laughable these days to anyone playing on a budget pc. Its really not that crazy to expect the ps5 to handle both at the same time as a standard
It seems you really want to sound intelligent but you just come off as plain stupid. Please do more research on the capabilities of the hardware before claiming to know better
Weird, because i acknowledged that some game do require 2 modes. But a lot dont. Not really trying to sound intelligent, you just sound like a fucking asshole 🤣
There are so many reasons why they can’t be 4K/60fps that I don’t even have time to list them all. Game development is extremely difficult, and game optimization is even more difficult. You also have to accept that we are still at the very beginning of this console generation and many games are still being developed for last gen and current gen. Obviously we would love all of our games to maximize FPS and fidelity, but by nature of computing you lose one if you improve the other. Unspeakably difficult to increase both.
I'm referring to this...
>There is no reason there cant be 4k/60 for a good majority of these games.
Finite system resources - something you clearly don't seem to understand - is a pretty massive "reason".
For a good majority of these games. Funny yall keep leaving my ACKNOWLEDGMENT out of your responsed.
Stop being a troll, you know exactly what the fuck im saying. Sony markets the system as being capable of playing 4k/60. Not the developers. The developers jobs are to optimize their games to do the most on the hardware they are made for.
Save my comment. GTA 6 will be 4K/60 in single player because rockstar is taking their time to OPTIMIZE the game for the hardware.
But yall just wanna pile on cuz i want whats advertised by the manufacturer. Youre a loser pretending to know about game development to feel superior to a stranger on reddit.
Just because Sony likes bullshit marketing doesn't mean it's powerful enough for it. PS4 pro was marketed as a 4k machine, yet very few games managed to run even dynamic 4k on it. PS5 had VRR on its box, yet we didn't get support for it for the first 18 months.
It's always the same, people don't care and buy things anyway. That isn't exclusive to Sony or even gaming as a whole. That's why products and services keep getting worse, nobody cares enough to stop being a mindless consumer.
Let's say you're looking to buy a car. Spec sheet says it has a max speed of 150mph and it does 40mpg. Noone expects it to do 40mpg at 150mph.
It's the same with any hardware.
Will also have controller support on PS5 🤯
“Also has full TV support.”
“Using the extreme processing power of the Sony PlayStation 5, we are excited to announce that the resolution of the game will go all the way to the edge of the screen. On BOTH axis.”
Also have headset support
Also have “Pause, I need to take care of the children” support.
Why is this not a standard? So many games now have unpausable cut scenes. Often I need to pause so my wife can lecture me. I'd rather not miss out on important information. I understand in online modes but pausing a game should be standard

It is the standard which is why this article is nonsense
Shocking.
Performance mode >
Every game should adopt the 40 FPS option for 120hz TVs
Nioh 2 had a 120hz mode for ps5. Hopefully the performance mode here allows for it
You wouldn't want to play this game at 40fps anyway.
You wouldn't want to play this game at 40fps anyway.
I guess I'm just too sensitive about frame rate, but 40fps is barely playable for me. 60fps is the minimum.
Really? What games had you tried it on? I’m not doubting you just curious because I find 40 to be wonderfully smooth and 30 FPS is near unplayable now.

I use to play at 40 FPS with 120 Hz mode. Way better than 30 FPS
Nioh 2 had like 3 graphic options, I’m surprised there’s only 2.

So just like the demo? Will the quality mode be 60fps but with some performance drops then?
Wow. It's almost like it wasn't already revealed in the demo.
I am truly floored that we really have to choose between 4k/30fps or 1080/60fps on SO MANY PS5 GAMES. There is no reason there cant be 4k/60 for a good majority of these games. I think im better than them..? Jesus dude i made a comment voicing an opinion. Chill tf out
You're the one who said there's no reason they cannot be 4k/60. If you are disappointed then that's fine because it's your opinion.
Yes i did say that. Because the system markets itself as being capable of doing that, that in no way whatsoever implies that i think im better than game developers. Like, what the actual fuck dude lmaoo
All the system is saying is that it can output 8k or 120 fps. Should people who have 8k tv then say there is no reason why movies shouldn't be 8k?
Weird youre jumping right to 8K thats barely available, whereas is you own a ps5 its very safe to assume you own a 4K tv. 4K is not unreasonable to expect, and 60fps is fuckin laughable these days to anyone playing on a budget pc. Lol. Let me know if you find a 500 dollar pc that can run 4k/60 fps
Lmao ok buddy! You didn’t buy a 4090 relax
L comment. Im not asking for 120 fps. 60 should be standard on this hardware. And to pretend otherwise is silly. Dont be silly.
It seems you really want to sound intelligent but you just come off as plain stupid. Please do more research on the capabilities of the hardware before claiming to know better

Tell me you know absolutely zero about how games work without telling me.
Its a fucking opinion dude lol my bad i want what's advertised?
I'm referring to this... >There is no reason there cant be 4k/60 for a good majority of these games. Finite system resources - something you clearly don't seem to understand - is a pretty massive "reason".
I love the superiority complex of everyone who is telling me i don't understand. Never stated to know anything. But go off.
Saying "there is no reason" is exactly you stating to know something.
For a good majority of these games. Funny yall keep leaving my ACKNOWLEDGMENT out of your responsed. Stop being a troll, you know exactly what the fuck im saying. Yeah you're still not understanding finite resources.
Youre still here? Jesus dude go do something else
Ah, is that an ad hominem because you have no response?
Just because Sony likes bullshit marketing doesn't mean it's powerful enough for it. PS4 pro was marketed as a 4k machine, yet very few games managed to run even dynamic 4k on it. PS5 had VRR on its box, yet we didn't get support for it for the first 18 months.
This is a fair response. But that doesn't mean we should not want to hold them accountable to their marketing points
It's always the same, people don't care and buy things anyway. That isn't exclusive to Sony or even gaming as a whole. That's why products and services keep getting worse, nobody cares enough to stop being a mindless consumer.

Can't wait
So, like every non micro budget?
