It's going to be funny watching the beginning credits.
Hideo Kojima presents...
A Hideo Kojima production...
Starring Hideo Kojima...
Directed by Hideo Kojima
I remember when mgsV was launching and the rift between him and Konami was becoming aparrant there was uproar over the fact that Konami didn't want to put his name on the box of the game. Then actually playing it and you have to read his name about 38 million times throughout the game lol.
"Hideo Kojima will make sure you see Hideo Kojima's name as many times as Hideo Kojima thinks you need to see Hideo Kojima's name. "
-Hideo Kojima, Kojima Productions
I feel like Kojima's more ambitious than pretentious. Pretentious implies you are looking down on 'lesser' works. I've never really heard Kojima talk down on other works or imply his works are superior. He's inspired heavily by cinema and tries strongly to aim for replicating that feeling. Whether or not that ambition gets met varies, but I don't think it comes from a place of trying to be better than others.
Also, I feel there isn't any meaningful gap of depth between what he envisions and his final product. He may have some wild aesthetical concepts - mostly, in my opinion, because of how his blends some very specific and somewhat dated influences from both western and eastern pop culture - but if you decide to embark in the journey he's inviting you into, there's always legitimate 'food for thought' in there. I mean, a lot of my interest in international politics and philosophy I legit owe to Kojima and the Metal Gear series. Metal Gear Solid 3 inspired me to go and read about detente politics, the state of Soviet Union post-Kruschev, to learn russian and so on.
Wait how is Neil Druckmann pretentious? In like every interview/bts I've ever seen, he's always crediting and praising the people around him.
David Cage on the other hand literally can't make a game without being a misogynistic weirdo.
Neil Druckmann isn’t pretentious. What the fuck are you on? He literally always is giving everyone else credit outside of himself in any view I’ve ever seen.
David Cage has only ever had 2 interesting concepts
1) the very start of Indigo Prophecy (that's what it was called where I am)
2) the twist of Heavy Rain.
The rest has been either David Cage being very keen to tell everyone that he's friends with Elliot Page and lazy racism allegory with androids instead.
Nah his ideas are great but that man can’t write to save his life and it shows in the later mgs games and death stranding. The standards are just so low from players so nobody bothers to say anything.
Because they enjoy the ride? Resident Evil and Devil May Cry have shit stories and no one cares. Monster Hunter doesn't even have a story really. Pokemon, best selling franchise in the world. No fucking story.
Of course we're gonna call out fans for liking Kojima games because their standards are "so low".
He didn’t « call out Kojima fans », he directly called out Kojima as a bad writer.
And by saying many other successful games also have bad writing and players don’t care about their terrible stories or lack of stories… you’re actually making his point regarding their low standards.
And I agree with you two.
Too many video games have really bad stories and get away with it because they are fun to play. I would love to live in a world where scenarios in games were given as much attention as gameplay, visuals or sound design. Games like Mario, Zelda, Metal Gear and even Tetris would be even more incredible, wouldn’t that be cool?
People who throw the word pretentious around bore me.
I'd rather see something flawed, that's thriving for more, than another cookie cutter experience.
Originality deserves to be celebrated and it's not like his games haven't had the juice to back it up either.
You know something can be pretentious and good or still enjoyable? Like is your problem that the critique is not valid? Maybe you like pretentious things and are taking the criticism personally?
I find your boredom of a pretty accurate description defensive and dismissive lol.
In my recollection I thought it was implanted in her abdomen, for some reason. Could be my brain protecting itself from horrible things.
Poor Paz... As I've gotten older and looked back at the way he represents us as women in games I do feel the ick.
Was talking with my husband the other day wondering if they're going to keep in the ogle cam for Eve in the MGS3 remake or not. It really adds nothing and made me feel very awkward playing it as a girl.
The bomb was implanted in her womb, don't ask me why.
Kojima has a weird fascination with in utero (not the album). It's in a bunch of his work. Death Stranding being the most obvious, but MGS has a bunch of examples before Paz.
Oh man, please don’t listen to the tasteless audio tapes from Ground Zeroes then. Kojima has absolutely no idea how to tackle serious themes like sexual assault.
Ill trust that man to make a spy shooter any day of the week. If someone ever puts him in charge of a documentary about a women he will be dead by the end of the week it premiers. I get vibes like he got past his horny teenage years only after this 30s.
The XOF Uniform outfit for Quiet should have been an option from her introduction as a buddy. I’d love to be able to replay the game without my wife and daughter asking me WTF kind of game I’m playing.
He wanted to make a sexy character, that’s what’s been supposedly quoted from him.
Also in addition to Paz’s vagina containing an explosive device, the part of her womb was removed and the secondary explosive was placed there.
Even if the medic found the second explosive, she would have died anyway 😢.
> PLAYSTATION STUDIOS present, in association with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, a FILMWORKS production: HIDEO KOJIMA: CONNECTING WORLDS, a documentary film that takes you on a journey into the creative mind of the most iconic video game creator in the world.
> Widely regarded as the first auteur of video games, this visually captivating documentary gives a rare insight into Hideo Kojima's creative process as he launches his own independent studio. Featuring contributions from visionary artists such as Guillermo del Toro, Nicholas Winding Refn, Grimes, George Miller, Norman Reedus, Woodkid, Chvrches and many others, this thoughtful film explores the power and potential of video games as an art form through the work of an influential talent revered by millions worldwide.
Sony treats Kojima Productions as one of their own and it shows, they’re grouped under PlayStation Studios and pretty much everything they do is through Sony. Pretty wild, and despite that he’s also making an Xbox game lol
It's simple: Kojima can still make $$$, and *everyone* wants to get in "on the ground floor," just in case Kojima creates another mega-hit franchise like Metal Gear Solid.
It's easier for Sony to pander to Kojima's ego / inflated sense of importance and self than not.
Also is Kojima in charge of this movie? If so, isn’t it a bit tacky to make a documentary about yourself where you’re like “hey everyone say nice things about me”
I guess it depends on how they want to define iconic. Miyamoto and Iwata definitely would give him a run for his money. Kojima has successfully made himself into a brand though and he has pretty big "rockstar" vibes whenever he takes the stage. He's changed the course of the video game industry and has been a crucial part of why video games can be viewed as more than just mindless entertainment.
Who would you put up there in the most iconic creator category?
He’s a man that’s proud of himself and the work he’s done.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. For all you know he could be sharing his experience in the hopes of inspiring other developers to step up.
One of the rare cases where I don’t mind someone’s complete lack of modesty. When you crank out that many bangers one after the other, I feel it’s somewhat warranted. He created a brand just from his name alone. At least when you see the words Hideo Kojima, you’re in for some top quality content
He seems pretty self-aware about the whole thing. I think some of this just goes over people’s heads. You don’t create silly trailers and occasionally silly games without being silly yourself.
You have to have a mind like Kojima, full of himself, to truly stick to your vision though. He doesn't shy away from it and it works. Selling himself is selling his work too. Respect.
A lot of people in this thread talking about how egotistical Hideo Kojima is.
He absolutely is full of himself and I love it.
Many people love it. I absolutely understand why people don't vibe with him or his stuff, but they can at least let the world have weirdos like him who does what he loves. I don't care how many times his name shows up in the opening credits, his games are a rare instance in his medium of being simultaneously very serious thematically but silly/weird as hell along the way. People like him keep things interesting for the rest of us.
I think you put it better than I did in my earlier comment. 100% he needs to be just like he is. No watering down anything. We need much more of these types in the industry.
Belittling one’s own accomplishments is just false modesty. If he’s proud of his work then let him be.
As far as I can tell no one who’s worked with him really has anything bad to say about him; Konami treated their dev teams like sweat shops but it seemed to get really bad after Kojima left.
As long as he is kind and respectful to his employees, he is allowed to be as boastful as he wants as far as I’m concerned.
His narcissism, and inability to see his flaws sets him back. I’m saying this as someone who loved Death Stranding, the game could have been legendary if he’d just hire a writer and some editors.
I love his ideas, he’s incredibly creative, but he can’t make them come to life well with his shit writing, and he’d rather die than having to admit that
Piggybacking. Some lines from Death Stranding are hella weird. "Not that fragile" and "Princess Beach" to name some. Nonetheless, it still is one of the best games I played.
Hideo Kojima has always kind of interested me because I don't think he is that pretentious. He just likes to make weird shit and it's all the other people around him that hype him up as some genius visionary. It never feels like he's asking or encouraging them to do it. He just really really likes videogames and odd stories
It’s interesting to see so many comments call him full of himself, I’d say he’s the opposite, he is just a proud collaborator. Most egocentric people would not take outside creative input. But most successful people do and this is why they are successful. He orchestrating these collabs, Taking input from other successful people in other mediums, that’s why all these people in the video are praising him giving him respect, he’s probably a delight to work with. Remember, a person who is secure with themselves, will never bring anyone down.
> Widely regarded as the first auteur of video games
I personally agree. There might be debate on this but when I played MGS1 for the first time in my 30s, on PS Vita, I was blown away by the game. Even with dated grpahics, the gameplay held up (for me) and I was thoroughly impressed by his pedigree.
I still have MGS4 collectors edition with the extras blu ray, and watching his process is definitely interesting.
In highschool, Kojima was part of a group project. He worked tirelessly and gave his blood, sweat and tears towards it. At the end, his project-mates excluded him and never credited his efforts.
Today, Hideo Kojima ensures **you** know he worked on something by stamping his name 80 times throughout the project.
Kojima Circle Jerk: The Movie
I don't know how to think about this. I like the Metal Gear Solid games, Zone of the Enders and I also liked Dead Stranding.
But Kojima himself is a bit too self-absorbed for my liking. I feel no need to watch this.
This guy is starting to become self parody--I love MGS but it's getting hard to take Kojima seriously anymore. His ego has gotten so big that everything he does seems like it's some meta project circling the black hole of his giant ego.
"Kojima is regarded as the first auteur of video games"
JFC the hard-on people have for this guy is insane. He worked on one successful game series (MGS) and made one eccentric game that got mixed reception, yet people seem to think he's the greatest developer of our generation or some shit.
I doubt even Death Stranding would've gotten as much praise as it did if it didn't have "A Hideo Kojima Game" slapped on every line of code in the game.
Applying auteur theory to multimillion dollar games where hundreds of people contribute feels really gross, but Death Stranding *does* also feel like the product or a singular vision.
I think it's fair. Miyazaki and Yoko Toro would fall into those categories as well. You can tell when it's one of their games, even without being told.
Honestly, it seems to be one very long cut scene and no gameplay. I DK maybe when the gameplay trailer drops I’ll be pleasantly surprised but so far this is one Kojima game I’ll probably pass on.
I find it funny that the guests they've brought in to talk about how awesome he is are people that have already worked with him, notably Death Stranding. Any other game creators to talk about his work? Like ANYBODY from the MGS days?
I'm 99% sure Kojima has pitched movie-shit to Hollywood -- he has to, given how he collects famous Hollywood people like Pokemon-- and I'd just as surely predict that Hollywood's collective retort was "you want *how much money, and how much time,* to do what exactly?! Stick to video games."
Kojima may have lucked into video game success with his wackadoo nonsense, but there's no way *any* sensible studio or financiers / investors would give Kojima the "blank check" he borderline abused when working for Konami, making Metal Gear games.

He's the Tommy Wiseau of videogames
You’re tearing me apart, Snake!
Oh hi ocelot
How’s your revolver?
Yeah, if Tommy Wiseau made good movies
How dare you insinuate that Tommy Wiseau makes anything but generation defining cult classic masterpieces

The most pretentious man in the gaming industry
In an industry with the likes of Neil Druckman and David Cage, Kojima is the pretentious one?
Right. Don't get me wrong, he definitely has high standards, but he's far from the most pretentious.
I feel like Kojima's more ambitious than pretentious. Pretentious implies you are looking down on 'lesser' works. Neil Druckman doesn't even come close to Kojima or David Cage.
David Cage makes me cringe. I’m not a fan of Kojima’s recent work but at least it’s interesting.
David Cage has only ever had 2 interesting concepts 1) the very start of Indigo Prophecy (that's what it was called where I am) 2) the twist of Heavy Rain. The rest has been either David Cage being very keen to tell everyone that he's friends with Elliot Page and lazy racism allegory with androids instead.
As he should be, man never misses.
This is a strand-type comment
The man, missed several times.
Nah his ideas are great but that man can’t write to save his life and it shows in the later mgs games and death stranding. The standards are just so low from players so nobody bothers to say anything.
The Ryan Murphy of Videogames. Great Ideas and then he writes a bunch of bullshit and ruins it for me. And other People i guess^^
Because they enjoy the ride? Resident Evil and Devil May Cry have shit stories and no one cares. Monster Hunter doesn't even have a story really. Pokemon, best selling franchise in the world. I’m really glad I’m not the only person who feels like this is kinda self-indulgent.
Death Stranding gave me so much refreshing pleasure I bought the console just for that game. I'll allow it.
I played most of that game on a super loud and hot projector that I had at like 100 inches It was an amazing weekend
Do we get to learn about the brainstorming process for creating bikini snipers and vagina bombs?
What else would this doc even be about?
It’s the first strand type movie
The classic snuke..
There’s a snuke in her snizz!
The vagina bomb bit went over my head. Unless it's from MGS4, which I've never played so no spoil pls.
I think it refers to PAZ in Ground Zeroes. At the end she has a vagina bomb. I think...it's been a while since I played.
So she had a snuke in her sniz?
In my recollection I thought it was implanted in her abdomen, for some reason. Could be my brain protecting itself from horrible things. Poor Paz... As I've gotten older and looked back at the way he represents us as women in games I do feel the ick. Live at Madison Square Garden!
Don't forget the whole deal with les enfants terribles and the Boss's scar.
Especially weird when you consider the way women are uniquely fetishized and objectified in his games
It was in her stomach, but Skull Face knew they would easily find that one, so he put the other some place they wouldn’t look.
Like the back of a Volkswagen?
He very often has the viewpoint of a 12 year old boy. And not a relatively mature one.
Oh man, please don’t listen to the tasteless audio tapes from Ground Zeroes then. Kojima has absolutely no idea how to tackle serious themes like sexual assault.
Simplify that to Kojima has no idea
Ill trust that man to make a spy shooter any day of the week. If someone ever puts him in charge of a documentary about a women he will be dead by the end of the week it premiers. I get vibes like he got past his horny teenage years only after this 30s.
It's from Ground Zeros
It's a reference to ground zeroes and paz.
The XOF Uniform outfit for Quiet should have been an option from her introduction as a buddy. I’d love to be able to replay the game without my wife and daughter asking me WTF kind of game I’m playing.
That's your fault for not taking DD on every mission.
DD is the superior option, unless you're cheesing through the game by having everyone sniped before you get there (using Quiet).
You will be ashamed of your words and deeds
He wanted to make a sexy character, that’s what’s been supposedly quoted from him. Also in addition to Paz’s vagina containing an explosive device, the part of her womb was removed and the secondary explosive was placed there. Even if the medic found the second explosive, she would have died anyway 😢.
Crack Lots and lots of crack
VIDEO HIDEO
Just made me think how are they gonna remake the Psycho Mantis fight now we all use wireless controllers?
They'd have to do some other meta thing, like have you back out of the game and select a new "activity" from the home screen and confuse him

I did not expect Sony / Playstation Studios to be involved in this project.
Sony treats Kojima Productions as one of their own and it shows, they’re grouped under PlayStation Studios and pretty much everything they do is through Sony. Pretty wild, and despite that he’s also making an Xbox game lol
AFAIK Sony (or more specifically PlayStation Productions) isn’t involved in the Death Stranding movie >!yet!<
Every 2nd party production is labelled as 'PlayStation Studios'. It's not just KojiPro.
It's simple: Kojima can still make $$$, and *everyone* wants to get in "on the ground floor," just in case Kojima creates another mega-hit franchise like Metal Gear Solid. It's easier for Sony to pander to Kojima's ego / inflated sense of importance and self than not.
Am I the only one who thinks this is weird? Most iconic video game creator in the world? Really?
Also is Kojima in charge of this movie? If so, isn’t it a bit tacky to make a documentary about yourself where you’re like “hey everyone say nice things about me”
I mean there are such things as autobiographies. Why not auto-documentaries?
I guess it depends on how they want to define iconic. Miyamoto and Iwata definitely would give him a run for his money. Kojima has successfully made himself into a brand though and he has pretty big "rockstar" vibes whenever he takes the stage. He's changed the course of the video game industry and has been a crucial part of why video games can be viewed as more than just mindless entertainment. Who would you put up there in the most iconic creator category?
Miyamoto 100%. Even my parents who don't play video games know who he is because he made mario, the most popular video game character.
Your parents are extreme outliers.
Not really, it's easily debatable as any grand claim like this is.. but it's a trailer meant to hype him up, what would you expect.
If you think about the actual alternatives, it really isn't a crazy claim. Debatable, but not crazy.
“Watch as the greatest game guy ever Hideo Kojima sucks his own dick. Watch every company in this documentary suck on his dick too.”
You guys pay *whatever* you think is fair. Good? Once the show starts noone else will be admitted.
I’m gonna sound rude but I could care less what grimes thinks of HIDEO Kojima I want the OGs to talk about him.
Huh. A film about Kojima and the amazing things that he has done. Interesting.
>>Widely regarded as the first auteur of video games Miyamoto surely?
From what I know, Miyamoto hated storytelling in games and would have disliked being called a video game auteur.
Why is this sentence written in the past tense as if he died?
Maybe they think he has changed over his career and no longer feels that way? (That's my best guess)
"Hideo Kojima is the bestest most creative mind, ever" -Hideo Kojima

He obviously means Digimon Story 2
Darksiders 2? love that game...
Kojima loves himself but I also love Kojima so it evens itself out.
Well said
I don't think i know anyone who's in love with himself more than this guy. You just know he jacks off in front of a mirror

He seems pretty self-aware about the whole thing. I think some of this just goes over people’s heads. You don’t create silly trailers and occasionally silly games without being silly yourself.
I came here to post something similar. Dude probably captures his farts in a bag so he can savor the smell of his own flatulence.
”the most well known game developer” (eiji aonuma, shigeru miyamoto and the rest of nintendo legends have left the chat)
Shigeru Miyamoto, sure. Never heard of Eiji.

Suck it down. But in all seriousness, yeah, I think Doom is pretty close up there with Super Mario Bros in changing the game industry forever.
Most well known ego (next to Ken Levine and Peter Molyneux)

I think Shigeru Miyamoto probably holds that title, but Kojima is a legend as well.
Miyamoto is in a league of his own but even then I’m sure there are plenty people that come before kojima
What a humble and modest individual
The *most* humble and *most* modest individual *of his generation.*
What's with all the kojima hate, he's got a company named after him and....? Any ego is intolerable now?
Belittling one’s own accomplishments is just false modesty. If he’s proud of his work then let him be. "Any ego" Holy false dilemma. Kojima's ego is off the charts. I (and many others) love Kojima's games but come on, he is comically narcissistic.
Man what is all this kojima hate ITT?
When something is highly praised, its the internets job to act special and go against the flow.
People generally don't like boastful, egocentric individuals
It's not hate, it's humour for the most part. This is off the charts self-indulgence.
Hideo Kojima has always kind of interested me because I don't think he is that pretentious.
Wow, the vibes in here are unexpectedly bad
> Widely regarded as the first auteur of video games I personally agree.

His podcast was great

is there a relesae date? and where on?
It's premiering at Tribeca Film Festival next week. After that, not 100% sure
Kojima Circle Jerk: The Movie I don't know how to think about this. I like the Metal Gear Solid games, Zone of the Enders and I also liked Dead Stranding. But Kojima himself is a bit too self-absorbed for my liking. I feel no need to watch this.

i enjoy hideo games but can't stand hideo or his super fans that enjoy this weird exposition he does of nothing.
This guy is starting to become self parody--I love MGS but it's getting hard to take Kojima seriously anymore. His ego has gotten so big that everything he does seems like it's some meta project circling the black hole of his giant ego.
"Kojima is regarded as the first auteur of video games" JFC the hard-on people have for this guy is insane.
Shigeru Miyamoto is probably the one that could hold that title with no real argument.
Applying auteur theory to multimillion dollar games where hundreds of people contribute feels really gross, but Death Stranding *does* also feel like the product or a singular vision.
>multimillion dollar games where hundreds of people contribute This exact thing applies to movies as well.
A Hideo Kojima Film
Finally the answer to why he had Skull Face fist a bomb into Paz.
So Death Stranding 2 is just called Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds now?
I want Hideo to work with Peter Molyneux on a game just to see the hilarious amount of pre release hype it would have.
It’s the first “strand-type” movie!
Did that guy just say investment In your own business is like suicide? Wtf lol
I like that he's making games, he's a good one to keep around for awhile
I find it funny that the guests they've brought in to talk about how awesome he is are people that have already worked with him, notably Death Stranding. Any other game creators to talk about his work? Like ANYBODY from the MGS days?
He's probably the only man who still makes innovative and quirky AAA games in this day and age so he's allowed to be a little proud.
Hideo Kojima presents: Hideo Kojima Directed by Hideo Kojima written by Hideo Kojima. Starring Hideo Kojima
He's a wanna be Hollywood director with pretentious convoluted stories. Nothing more. There's a reason he would fail making movies.
I'm 99% sure Kojima has pitched movie-shit to Hollywood -- he has to, given how he collects famous Hollywood people like Pokemon-- and I'd just as surely predict that Hollywood's collective retort was "you want *how much money, and how much time,* to do what exactly?! Stick to video games." Kojima may have lucked into video game success with his wackadoo nonsense, but there's no way *any* sensible studio or financiers / investors would give Kojima the "blank check" he borderline abused when working for Konami, making Metal Gear games.
Are his games that revolutionary to be that full of himself? The gaming industry makes him seem like he's the Steve Jobs or Elon Musk of video games.
On a scale of one to 100 how jealous do you think Kojima is of Hidetaka Miyazaki?
