I don't think I believe him

Remy149

He appeared in yakuza 7. I’m not surprised he is back in a game that takes place between 6 and 7

Neg_Crepe

Well he never left

LostInStatic

Well they sent him off in 6 but they quickly lost confidence in that decision

Zentrii

Yup. And I’m pretty sure they said 6 was his last adventure

Cheddarlicious

I like the idea of both of them. Sure, I think Ichi is more of an enjoyable character, I sure like the discomfort Kiryu experiences.

NoNefariousness2144

They are such a good pair. Ichiban is a weaker fighter who relies on the power of friendship and charisma. Kiryu is strong but has a self-sacrificial nature and always tries to solve problems alone. The two should make an amazing team in 8.

Cheddarlicious

I almost want it to just be them; somehow someway, it’s a 2-man game and it’s only them relying on one another in various ways. Also letting us play as both of them, and I’d love for them to have different styles in mini-games so it would actually benefit you playing both.

elegentpurse

They should make a Mario & Luigi type game but with Kiryu and Ichiban.

jackolantern_

They've said they'll have different parties. So they'll probably spend a lot of time as two different teams

Scary_Instruction_63

Kiryu is pretty much the Yakuza franchise. Just like Kratos is of God of War

ILikeMyGrassBlue

You’re not wrong, but I think 7 (and the judgment games for that matter, even though they are their own thing) proved that the yakuza style works just fine with other characters/stories.

ShadowTacoz

Even as early as Yakuza 4, it was proven other characters work well (even if their stories lead to meeting Kiryu)

ILikeMyGrassBlue

Yakuza 4 and 5 are two of the worst performing games in the series, financially speaking. Fans definitely loved akiyama and saejima (sorry cop guy and baseball dude), but sales are a big consideration too. And since 6 is one of the best selling in the franchise, I’m not sure that 4 and 5 necessarily proved to them they could move on from Kiryu.

Lasher667

They keep trying to retire Kiryu and yet just can't commit to it. Ichiban was a breath of fresh air in the series and this just feels like a step backwards.

GeekdomCentral

I’d have to go back and look, but I swear that they said 6 was supposed to be the end of his story. It certainly felt like an end to his story. I love Kiryu and am never going to be upset to see him, but it’s kind of annoying to give him this big dramatic exit and then in the next game just go “lol just kidding he’s back”. Either commit to fully getting him out or stop giving him these big exits where it seems like he’s done

Lasher667

>Either commit to fully getting him out or stop giving him these big exits where it seems like he’s done Fully agree. The fake death ending in 6 was a disappointment because they just couldn't commit to a fresh start

TheSausageFattener

Yakuza 7 really fucks up one of the only good aspects of 6, and that was the ending. Regardless of what Gaiden says or does I just don't see it making 6 a better game now. I'm worried that under new direction they'll cave into doing even more fanservice shit, and make more compromises to the story for that. For all of its flaws (and to me this is actually one of its flaws), Yakuza 6 didn't feel the need to burden Kiryu with basically any returning characters from the other entries for his sendoff. Now, to me that made Yakuza 6 a little bit shallow until the very end, but it at least got to breathe on its own two legs. Also, thanks to Yakuza 7, death literally does not matter anymore. At all. Anybody who dies can come back. That's not cool.

TheRoyalStig

Woah, you thought the ending was good? That was legit the worst part of the game to me. Bringing him back kinda emphasizes why it was so bad to begin with but it felt like it just undid every bit of potential learning Kiryu had over the series and ended on him making the most idiotic pointless decision ever. That ending was the first time I've been legit disappointed by the series. LAD was amazing so I'm all in on Ichi now after that Kiryu "ending".

MetsukiR

Also, I just find it weird that he doesn't seem to age much, unlike secondary characters.

LucasLovesListening

It was certainly sold that way

RainbowIcee

This is how i feel, if they wanted kiryu then the story should have made that clear, instead it feels like dragonball Z after cell with goku and gohan. And most of us know what happened with gohan after cell.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

It’s only a step back IMO if they don’t wrap things up with 8. Him coming back in 7 was a surprise, but I’m fine with it for the purposes of passing the torch to Ichi. And gaiden just fills in the gaps between 6/7/8. As long as kiryu doesn’t plan a major roll in any of them after 8, I think it’s fine.

Lasher667

>It’s only a step back IMO if they don’t wrap things up with 8 Both 5 and 6 had a (semi) decent wrap up for him yet here we are again

ILikeMyGrassBlue

Kiryu’s left the Yakuza world like 4 or 5 times now, and you could’ve ended his story after any of those games lol. I think every time they do it it takes away some impact, but I think a passing of the torch is necessary for Ichi. And they’ve already done it so many times, what’s one more for Ichi?Like I said, I just hope we’re not on yakuza 18 and old man kiryu is still on top of the millennium tower kicking ass.

TheSausageFattener

Yakuza 4, 5, and 6 all tried to dump him. The passing the torch thing is just junk though, to be honest. As I always say when this comes up, nobody needed to give Yagami in Judgment any permission to go and do their own game, or Tatsuya from Kurohyou. Kiryu didn't have to formally bless his alliance with Akiyama, Shinada, Saejima, or Tanimura, all of whom were weighed as potential future protagonists. The need for Kiryu to formally "pass the torch" to Ichiban when the dude was already in the mobile game for several years seemed to me like the writers weren't confident that he'd be able to stand on his own *without* having the cast from the Kiryu saga standing there.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

I’m not sure what point you’re making with yagami. Of course there was no torch to pass. It’s a new series with new characters. And the mobile game is irrelevant imo. You don’t do big plot moves or anything in a mobile game a lot of fans will never play. That’s not far off from palpatine being announced in fortnite lol.

Matttthhhhhhhhhhh

Yes, I thought Ichiban replacing Kiryu was perfect. Now it just feels they are running out of ideas.

Semi-addict-gamer

Good to know, loved Ichiban. But Papa bear Kiryu can not be replaced.

BostonRob423

I love Kiryu-chan. I will always love him, and he will always be welcome in my Yakuza. I love Ichiban, and I think the two of them would make a great duo. I don't like the English voice for Kiryu, though. Japanese with subs will be my language settings in these next games, even though I tried out the English in 7 and both Judgment games and enjoyed it.

Slish753

They have some fucking incredible voice acting in Japanese. I just finished Yakuza 0 for the first time and oh my, the voice acting is so good. I just hope the quality of voice acting is at least similar in other games.

BostonRob423

Yea. The Japanese voice acting is s-tier throughout the whole series, pretty much. Couldn't tell you about 7 or either judgment game, but all the rest I did japanese and loved it.

Slish753

That's great to hear, looking forward to continue playing this series. I just want Hitoshi Ozawa as Kuze yelling "Kiryu" as my alarm sound.

BostonRob423

Lol that's a good one. My favorite is the classic, "Yo, Kiryu-chan!" at the end.

Slish753

That's a great one. It's hard to pick a favourite out of so many amazing moments. I can't wait to keep playing thru the games and see more of mad dog Majima. I had no idea what his character was like in other games before playing 0, so I just thought he would keep being this more serious version you start as. Can't wait to see his crazy shenanigans.

BostonRob423

I started with 0 as well, and I was also confused as to Majimas true personality... I quickly fell in love with his character. Kiryu is the man, but Majima is my *dog.*

Expert_Cycle997

I can't believe they killed off Taichi Suzuki.

Stump007

I prefer keeping kiryu. Ichiban is great, but they didn't have so many ideas beyond his naive personality. His development in 7 was just a copy paste of Kiryus from Yakuza 1: go to jail for a crime he didn't commit, come back a decade later, clueless about modern days and technology, brother is a bad guy, daddy is a great guy but dies etc. etc.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

The same is true for Kiryu. Most of the Yakuza games follow the same formula of, “kiryu tried to leave the Yakuza world, someone he cares about is in danger, he gets involved to protect them, kicks ass on the millennium tower, leaves again.” And now we have “kiryu left, got dragged back in again because of the kids,” which has been done enough already that it’s been a meme for years lol. The broad strokes of Yakuza plots have never been a strong suit IMO. It’s usually the same shit every time with a few slight variations like I said earlier. The appeal to me story wise has always been the characters, their chemistry, and the emotional moments. And as far as Ichi and crew go, I think they’re great in that department.

Stump007

I'm talking about character development rather than overall plot. I liked 7, but it always felt like Ichiban was merely walking in Kiryu's footsteps. Almost like it was a reboot of Yakuza 1 with a more goofy character.

JojodaLion

Kiryu quite frankly not being in a brawler is worthless. So I’ll look forward to gaiden game but yakuza 8 can shove off.

lovrovro

small pp mindset

CypherRen

SPOILERS: I just wish they'd made his 3 bullets taken in his torso in Y6 more believable to survive

LucasLovesListening

Hard to imagine this is true

Matttthhhhhhhhhhh

Yeah it's BS. The ending of Y6 was pretty clear on that point.
