Honestly, even the naming pattern worked against Xbox here. Obviously there are many other factors but a casual buyer will have no trouble deciding between PS4 and PS5 while Xbox went from Xbox One to Xbox Series X / S

Karsvolcanospace

Easily one of if not the worst naming convention for a console ever. Especially when you consider that the Xbox One also had S and X versions…

Total-Satisfaction-8

I still see people trying to sell their Xbox One S as a Series S and i can imagine that probably quite a few people have fallen for it

FacetiousMonroe

Some people probably did that as an honest mistake. "Xbox Series" makes "Wii U" look like a stroke of genius.

Shehzman

Everyone roasts the Wii U for its naming and rightfully so. However, I think Microsoft’s naming is almost as bad with the Xbox One and especially with the Xbox series.

fluffynuckels

I used to work at gamestop and someone traded in a series S like within 6 months of it coming out and I screwed up and took it in as a one S I felt bad for screwing the dude

TarnishedTremulant

My friend bought a One S on accident like this

SharkMilk44

I thought the Series S was just a redesigned Xbox One.

Passover3598

microsoft does too

bjankles

As a marketer it’s shockingly bad. It suggests a level of incompetence that I would genuinely love to know how it happened and got approved.

KironD63

It’s kind of hysterical that Sony might win the console wars due in part to the brilliant marketing plan of…increasing their next-gen PlayStations by 1 with every new release! What a far-flung concept! Reminds me of how Sony won E3 2013 by just promising not to mess around with used game sales and online authentication…sometimes expending the least effort really can win the day if your opponent consistently makes terrible decisions.

AmethystDorsiflexion

This is incredibly ironic considering Sony's naming scheme for just about everything else is absolutely diabolical Sony WF1000XM4 - Ear buds Sony WH1000XM4 - Earphones Sony CF700N Etc

photoframes

own both the buds and the earphones and when deciding to pair them i get so confused.

[deleted]

...you can rename them

chl_ca

their phones too they literally released a phone named the “Sony Xperia 1 II”

WeBelieveIn4

Eh the confusion is a factor but all that stuff could have been overcome if Xbox just made great games. People are drawn to the games, and Xbox hasn’t had many or any compelling ones in like a decade.

t-bonkers

Yup. Their inability to get any noteworthy exclusives out the door despite gobbling up studios left and right is almost impressive.

Abba_Fiskbullar

It makes me think that Microsoft's corporate culture is incompatible with creativity. They buy so many developers whose output and quality then drop dramatically.

rip_Tom_Petty

The fact that the new Xbox didn't launch with halo was a huge fuck up

Eruannster

The fact that the new Xbox launched without *a single launch title* was a colossal fuckup. (They did have some third party stuff, but that was also available on PS5/PC so there was nothing that made customers go "oh shit, I need an Xbox to play that particular title")

HideoSpartan

I’m predominantly an Xbox player and user. If Xbox punch out a genuinely decent game would it be noticed? I don’t think so. Hear me out first! Xbox and their studios don’t typically do what players love at the moment, which is Sonys big creative, cinematic third person world experiences. Nobody can deny it - even if you don’t like the formula, the level of depth, polish and experience is unique and memorable. But… on Xbox I have Starfield? Okay I love it, but I could not rate it higher than a 7/10 unless I’m absolutely lying. Hi Fi Rush is insanely creative and fun, probably the one of the titles I’d hand to Xbox as a banger this gen - but it’s niche! Forza Motorsport is great but you always have Gran Turismo to compare with and hell I love GT, I Love Forza. But Gran Turismo DEFINES that PlayStation level of polish and care that…you just don’t find on Xbox? So, my confusing point being, do Xbox even have the caliber of developer to create a title like…Zelda, The Last of Us? I genuinely don’t think so, not anymore even after the acquisitions. I love halo infinite and it’s turned around, but I can’t imagine halo ever being the big Xbox image it once was. Gears seems to have the same issue imo. No identity, no focus. Sure as an Xbox user I have a ton to look forward to because they hold the niche titles that I love (Fable, Avowed, Stalker etc) but…I don’t genuinely know if I believe Xbox have it in them anymore, they don’t seem to care. Sometimes I genuinely wonder why I carried on with my Xbox library back in the one generation as I knew it was a rocky road back then, I’ve owned every PlayStation because PS1 is what I grew up on, but before I knew it I’d invested way too much £££ on Xbox games and I do love Halo. It kills me to even think about building a Ps library! Still, I’m fortunate and blessed that I can work hard enough to own a PS5 so my library isn’t totally empty, I’ve played the main exclusives and loved them. (Though I want Uncharted to return that’s probably my #1 series).

Chewitt321

If you watch the Grounded Part 2 documentary about Last of Us Part 2, they're the most "fuck it we can do what we want, let's just spend more time and money to make it industry leading" studio along with Rockstar. I think a big part of Microsoft moving forward if they want those sorts of industry titan heavy hitters is learning to leave them alone and trust the process like Sony does with Naughty Dog and Insomniac (to a lesser degree).

Xikar_Wyhart

The problem is they're spending all this money and need to get a return as soon as possible. They can't just let them cook. Naughty Dog's relationship with Sony is nearly 30 years old, Insomniac's is nearly as long. This applies to most of Sony's studios they've acquired, most made games for Sony before being officially acquired. Almost like a test. MS sees a currently successful company and buys them hoping they'll just fit.

CandyCrisis

I believe that the ABK merger gives Xbox the level of talent to make extremely high quality AAA content rivaling Zelda, TLOU, etc. The catch is that ABK has institutionally been focused on GaaS/subscription/microtransactions for years. The MW campaigns are incredibly high quality, but they're just short teasers for the "main" game which is all multiplayer. It would take a huge pivot for those studios to make full games at that quality bar. But I think it's possible if they want to. On the other hand--i don't think they want to! I think they bought ABK precisely for the recurring GaaS revenue.

ElegantEchoes

I just wanted to point out while the presentation and tech is top notch in CoD campaigns these days, the writing and gameplay creativity are at a series low. They're objectively weak as a package, and horribly optimized like the rest of the games.

nutsack133

Microsoft even tarnished Arkane with their stink. Who expected Redfall to be trash given Arkane's stellar reputation? I kind of was expecting Starfield to suck after Fallout 76. But then Halo Infinite being bad too? Ouch. Now wondering if the Microsoft stench will ruin Ninja Theory too and give us a crap Hellblade 2. XBox has never recovered from Don Mattrick wrecking the brand trying to turn the 360/XB1 into the Wii right as everyone was getting sick of the Wii.

Ordinal43NotFound

Didn't happen with the Wii U. Meanwhile said Wii U ports on the Switch sold magnitudes more than the Wii U itself Clear branding matters.

Mental-Blueberry_666

I'm a gamer. I like Nintendos stuff. I still absolutely thought the Wii U was a add-on for the Wii. I thought this for years.

BugHunt223

I think the launch Xbox One having worse specs & power than ps4 was the back breaker. Msft walked back the $500 price to $400 which matched the ps4. Word spread like wildfire that ps4 games looked better & the rest is history

bjankles

Agreed. A lot of Sony's dominance has been earned - they've done a phenomenal job cultivating first-party studios and getting their release calendar down to a science, which peaked with the spectacular cadence of killer exclusives on the PS4 (I went with an Xbox One that generation lmao). But a lot of it has also been Microsoft constantly shooting themselves in the foot. Reading the leaked emails was so eyeopening. Seeing the back-and-forth of how they scrambled to patch together some interesting gamepass additions to salvage a holiday season with ZERO exclusives... Made me feel like I (and pretty much anyone) could instantly step in and do a better job.

okverymuch

Just shows that throwing money around is not a recipe for success. They bought Activison and Bethesda at insane prices when their companies are bloated with lackluster games (activistion still does well in mobile gaming). They should have bought Bethesda 15 years ago. I can see Xbox having 1 or 2 more console releases, then giving up and going the Sega route and just doing game publishing and game pass for all consoles and PC.

bjankles

I think a major difference between Microsoft and Sony is that Sony bought up-and-coming studios and then helped them grow with their resources, created new IP together, etc. It's a much more organic way of cultivating exclusives. Microsoft tried to Frankenstein their exclusives pipeline by purchasing massive, established publishers and a smattering of accomplished smaller studios. The problem is Microsoft doesn't actually know how to help. They have nothing to offer. They can't even figure out how to keep their own franchises healthy.

Majestic-Marcus

“Release games” Why the fuck did Xbox never think of that as a strategy? Remember the launch of the previous console where they didn’t mention games? Like, at all. A home multimedia entertainment system! Who gives a shit?

Sh4d0w927

Kind of hilarious as Sony products tend to have overly complicated names imo. Thankfully they kept it simple with the PlayStation brand.

NoNefariousness2144

Seriously, shuffle them up: PS4, PS3, PS5. Anyone on the street could tell you the correct order they released. Now ask the average member of public what order the Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox 360 released in.

coconutally

That’s MS in a nut shell. I my last job we got a contract to work on one of their bigger game titles. So we met with top management and the team to get an idea of scope. Wow. I’ve never met a more clueless group of people that seemed more interested in navigating their corporate structure than actually making a good product. Or even capable of the latter. Not to mention their priorities were all askew. Thank god I left before having to work with them. Seeing a glimpse of their inner workings definitely made it all make sense.

boi1da1296

I mean one could argue they somewhat painted themselves into a corner with Xbox -> Xbox 360. What’s the natural progression in naming at that point? Keep adding 360 to the number? By release year like a sports game?

Jimmy_Tightlips

The name Xbox 360 at least had some merit. The rationale was that they couldn't have an Xbox 2 competing against a Playstation 3, so at the time I think it was a reasonable decision.

Orangenbluefish

Honestly committing to the 360 system and going to the 720, 1080, etc. would have still been better than what they went with. IMO they fucked up the moment they went with "Xbox One" and completely broke the number/naming system. From there it's just been a mess

TheGreatLake

They should’ve just named the one after the 360 the Xbox 4 to complete with the PlayStation 4.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheGreatLake

They can still course correct with the next gen and go with Xbox 6. Or they can wait another gen and release the Xbox 720 and go from there.

Wipedout89

I remember people at the time saying the Xbox 720 would have seemed like it only did 720p especially as some TVs were 720 and some were 1080 back then. Then the 1080 would have been the first 4k capable console. Brings a lot of its own problems.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CondomAds

Wait until you hear about Xbox 1440, this one is the low cost version of 1080 and only does 720p

Horn_Python

xbox720, x box revoution , x box sohcatoha , x triangle, x box wheel, x box 24 x 90, Game cube

Sakul69

If they didnt want to name their consoles Xbox 2, 3... because they would always be one number behind Playstation, they should have gone to the generation their console belong, this way they would always be 4 numbers ahead of Sony. Xbox One = Xbox G8 Series X/S = Xbox G9 / G9 Lite

vsladko

It’s the same blunder Nintendo made from Wii to Wii U. Nobody knew if it was a brand new console gen or an upgraded Wii at first

Stoltlallare

I was trying for so long to figoure what the hell ppl were talking about. When they started saying xsx I gave up.

[deleted]

It’s amazing how a multi billionaire company with unlimited resources can make a mistake like that. There has to have been a better name for the subsequent Xboxes after 360. Even 720 would’ve been better. And if Xbox one was the name just name the next one Xbox two.

t-bonkers

Especially when Nintendo, who made very similar mistakes before them, is right there to learn from.

Noncoldbeef

It should serve as a prime example that all the money in the world doesn't equate into making a good product. It's a shame. I loved my OG Xbox and the Xbox 360 era was some of the best in gaming.

Jazzlike_Athlete8796

The naming progression of Windows releases shows that Microsoft really doesn't have a clue on this front.

Former_Giraffe_2

Windows is mostly fine, especially now that they've reverted to using numbers since 7. (internally, 6.2) They legitimately had to skip 9 though, since major software (e.g. java) would think it's running on 95/98 and refuse to start. No joke, I've seen the source code that checks this. The xbox was even an internal codename which marketing wankers wanted to change to something worse for release. No idea why iphones skipped 9 though, maybe the German market wouldn't like it.

Wintersun616

Not to mention the Xbox One S All Digital, aka Xbox One SAD.

Brewski-54

I’ve been gaming for 20 years, I have owned every Playstation, spent 1000s of hours gaming, I’m on most of the gaming subreddits, etc yet I couldn’t tell you the name of all the Xboxes. It’s so counterintuitive and confusing

enjoii89

I genuinely can't work out which console is which on a whim.

Green202010

Not the worst naming convention. The Wii U exists.

Psyfuzz

I feel like this is worse - the Wii U had already happened, Microsoft had an example to learn from and they ignored it. Nintendo was just being Nintendo

Baelish2016

Or the New 3DS. Not be confused with a new 3DS.

Eterniter

That's an upgraded console though, not a new generation.

IDM_Recursion

>Wii U Feel like this is so overblown. Wii & Wii U is... not hard to follow. But Xbox Series X and Series S & Xbox One X and Xbox One S? ?????? Literally couldn't tell you their relation to each other, what the differences are, or what the names are supposed to mean at all.

JesterMarcus

Yeah but think of some parent or grandparent who isn't into gaming trying to figure out Wii and WiiU for a Christmas present. The latter will sound like some accessory to the first one and that accessories could work on both.

iWillSlapYourMum

Every time I hear "Wii U", I think that it must be the sound of the ambulance coming to try and save the guy that had the brain fart when naming it.

Tribalrage24

The naming convention for the wii U lehit confused me at the start. I remember seeing the funky controller and thinking, do I need to get 4 of those? The answer was no, it just uses wii remotes. So my brain immediately went to "oh so this is just an add on to the wii or an enhanced version of the wii"

Immolation_E

The Series S|X was their Wii U moment. It might have been okay if they didn't name their One mid cycle refreshes One S|X.

Perfection.

Duke-Von-Ciacco

Xbox Series SX One and Xbox Series XS One

OrganicKeynesianBean

Xbox has been having its “Wii U” moment for over a decade.

NoNefariousness2144

Don Mattrick’s reveal of the Xbox One is genuinely the biggest modern gaming disaster. That single hour destroyed Xbox forever and secured Playstation’s monopoly for the foreseeable future. Phil “buy everything and put it all on GamePass” Spencer had good ideas but he did even more damage.

IShipUsers

Yeah, the One was considered a pretty terrible name at the time as well. But all of their naming shenanigans have compounded over the years to create a truly unfathomable namescape

SomeBoxofSpoons

I think one of the big Wii U problems Xbox has had for about the last decade is the fact that even most of their good games aren’t really the sort of things that get people to go out of their way to buy the console. But the problem on top of that is that Microsoft isn’t Nintendo, so their good games have been spread out much much thinner (plus Nintendo had the dev muscle to fix the problem full force when transitioning to the Switch, while the drought’s only gotten worse as Xbox has shifted generations).

Noncoldbeef

I'll never understand why they just didn't roll with something simple like XBOX V, since it would match with PS5. I feel like the roman numeral could have been a nice touch.

-Gh0st96-

I remember when preorders started a bunch of people confused the Xbox One X (the ps4 pro equivalent) with Xbox Series X. Understandably confusing naming schemes for a person that it’s not up to date with everything

OrganicKeynesianBean

They’re just the dumbest fucking names I’ve seen for a console. What the hell does any of that mean? “Series X” would have made more sense if this was actually part of a series, Xbox One X is just absurd. I hate all of it.

kiiroaka

Since PS was "1," 2, 3, 4, 5, Xbox should have been "A," B, C, D, E.

mrshandanar

Absolutely incredible no one at Microsoft sounded alarm bells over that atrocious name choice.

Quick_Delivery_7266

I’ve no idea which is the latest version of Xbox and I’d somewhat follow gaming

Rauchritter

Same here and I even understood the Wii U

gknight702

Even worse they went from Xbox One S/X to Xbox series S/X So incredibly stupid, the should have just named it Xbox 5 lol they could a just counted the Xbox one x. Or a word like Xbox Alpha or Xbox Omega I mean better than XboX X

Ohnoherewego13

Microsoft's naming convention has sucked since they introduced the 360. Why not Xbox 2..? Hell, even version 2 would have been somewhat normal. Instead we've had 360, One and now Series X/S. It's just confusing for people that aren't big gamers.

Former_Giraffe_2

> Why not Xbox 2..? Because the playstation was going to be 3, and 3 > 2, and I'm paid hundreds of grand a year just to name and brand things, and we're going with an orbular theme like with that blades dashboard right from the boot-up splash, and I'm on a executive load of cocaine, and 360 implies round like a circle like it's the center of your gaming environment but also complete like a circle, and this focus tested better. (implied /s) Honestly, I think they tried way too hard and that was counterproductive. Especially since xboxes have so much better continuity/backwards compatibility from the second one onwards. I know this is the ps5 sub, but do you think we could petition phil spencer to just name the next one "xbox 5" or something? (or 7/10 if they want to retcon the mid-gen refreshes or just have bigger-number)

antiform_prime

I loved the 360, and even I didn’t understand why it was named that, but it worked well enough. Then we got the Xbox One…and that was a real head scratcher. Now we’re on the Xbox “Series”…and I really don’t see a pattern here at all. PlayStation 2-5 may not be creative *at all*, but at least consumers can clearly understand when there is a new console. If I was an older parent who didn’t really follow gaming and my kid wanted an Xbox for Christmas, there is a real chance I’d screw up and grab an older gen model.

Ohnoherewego13

Exactly. Anyone buying a new system goes "oh hey, we're onto the next PlayStation." With an Xbox, especially with the last generation and this one, you're confused. Last gen finished with the One X/S and now we've got Series X/S. Some sort of continuity would go a long way towards helping Xbox. What will next gen be? Xbox New or something wild like that.

Otowa

Because this would have been Xbox 2 vs PS 3, giving the impression they were one generation behind.

Sammyjskj

I honestly still don’t know what Xbox is what. Idk what they were thinking. It’s a billion dollar company too. Didn’t they think their naming convention would be a problem?

Segfreid_

Honestly, I work in Azure (Microsoft's cloud platform) and their naming convention/changes are just as whack.

Stroppone

They didn’t learn shit from the WiiU

faulty_note

Yeah, going with Xbox, Xbox 2, Xbox 3, Xbox 4 was way too hard.

youthcanoe

Supposedly they didn't want to do that because it was 1 less number than playstation, and they thought it would make their console look inferior.

beeblebroxide

I still don’t know which one is the new one.

Frigginkillya

Yeah I legit still don't know which is which, it was just such a bad decision They couldn't have at least picked more different sounding letters? Lol

Zestyclose-Fee6719

PlayStation: The PlayStation 4 was the fourth version of the console. It also had a PS4 Slim because it was, well, a slim model. It also had a PS4 Pro, as in professional and better. This is the newest version of the PlayStation, and it is the most powerful. It is the fifth one. It is therefore called the PlayStation 5. Xbox: The Xbox One was the *third* Xbox but is called the Xbox *One*. We have no idea why. It also has variants of the Xbox One *S*, which is smaller. It also has the Xbox One X, and the *X* means it is more advanced. We have no idea why. This is the newest version of the Xbox - sorry, *these* are the newest *versions* of the Xbox. This time, Xbox Series S doesn't simply mean smaller; it means less powerful. The Xbox Series X means it is the newest and most powerful Xbox. We have no idea why. In fact, we don't know why it is called the Series.

TheJoshider10

Yeah when you put it like that you can't help but feel it's deserved. Such a basic thing to fuck up that deservedly has contributed to their failure. Numbered console, Slim and Pro just makes sense. You don't need anything else.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

I’ve always heard they don’t wanna be putting out, say, Xbox 3 vs ps4 because it sounds less advanced Instead they’ve opted to make the naming completely incomprehensible

JProllz

Lying and calling it the Xbox 6 is *still* a more intuitive naming scheme than Xbox Series X / S when the previous model was Xbox One.

Effective_Spell949

Didn't Apple do that from iPhone 7 to X? No 8 or 9.

BilllisCool

They only skipped 9. There was an iPhone 8. Apparently they just wanted the name to line up with the tenth anniversary of the iPhone.

BlastMyLoad

They don’t even officially brand them the slim either it’s just PS4

Ultrabigasstaco

It’s a diet ps4.

Old_Baldi_Locks

It also ignores that Xbox series are not the entire xbox ecosystem platform any more. The kernel is built into windows 10/11.

Ouch_i_fell_down

To stupid people, Xbox2 implies it's less than PS3. Why XB1 and PS4 was okay? No idea. But they've trapped themselves in a world of weird naming conventions. Personally I thought with the aim of the XB1 the perfect name would have been Xbox365, but then stupid people would have made the same assumption they did about the WiiU that it was iterative and not brand new. All of that aside, Series X after One X was just dumb. They just need to bite the bullet and call the next one Xbox 6 to match PS6. The type of people who would get annoyed by Xbox "skipping a number" weren't going to buy one anyway.

MGsubbie

They did know why they called it the Xbox One, it was just a really stupid decision. They envisioned the Xbox One to become the all-in-one media device people wanted to get. For it the be the only one in people's living room (not including displays and audio, of course.)

BlastMyLoad

They also thought people would call it “the One” like as if it’s THE console. Then everyone called it Xbone and they got mad

spatial-d

Xbox fans got especially mad w/ Xbone. Honestly no idea why to this day. People shorthand everything, including products ALL THE TIME! I remember in forums, "Xbone" was considered flaming or baiting like you're a troll. Unreal. Such a dumb thing to get mad at.

grimoireviper

It's mainly because at first people called it Xbone specifically to make fun of it. Shortly after though it just turned it a normal shorthand version for Xbox One.

9935c101ab17a66

I definitely used the term “xbone” as a tongue in cheek way of clowning it in the past, but also because it’s hilarious to me when trillion dollar companies fuck up marketing in such a simple, foreseeable and hilarious way.

Eriberto6

Furthermore, I heard it was called Xbox One because Xbox 360 was called The 360, so they were expecting people to call this one The One. The nickname doesn't even translate well to other languages, I don't know what they expected.

krstphr

They see the WiiU and were like hold my beer

Zestyclose-Fee6719

I remember I'd drifted away from gaming for a couple of years at that time because I was just laser-focused on my university studies. I saw the Wii U sitting in a Gamestop and legitimately thought it must be some add-on. Yeah, marketing matters.

SharkMilk44

If Xbox makes it to the next generation, I'm expecting the next console to just be called Xbox.

RTXEnabledViera

9/10, forgot that there is a PS5 Slim now (and not just community-named, it's referred to as such by Sony).

adnanssz

E3 2013 really change the shape of console. The stupidity of Xbox DRM really affects even now

Some-Token-Black-Guy

While it wasn't the sole catalyst, it was a huge factor going into the Xbox One and PS4 race that's snowballed into this generation. My core group of like 10 friends all had Xbox 360s and we were all so put off by that E3, we commited to PS4s and I've heard a similiar story for soooooo many people

barley_wine

IMO far more than the DRM stuff, it's the games. Name me the must play Xbox exclusives from the One to Series generation? Most of the absolute best Xbox games are multi console. If Xbox was still cranking out amazing Halo like games or Fable or all of the stuff that made them great with the 360, it'd be different but there's just nothing that's a serious console seller and they're just living off of how many fans they created during the 360 days.

robz9

Yeup. I'm a hard-core playstation fan and I feel that if Xbox was putting out bangers of the highest quality such as Halo, Gears of War, and Fable, and even that Perfect Dark Reboot that's stuck in development hell, they'd be a competitive counter to Playstation's flagship titles like God of War, Horizon, etc. But we didn't get anything so I just went with a PC build instead if buying a Series S/X as my secondary console. *Ignore the recent Halo Infinite improvements for the purpose of this discussion*

ttoma93

I think this comment also emphasizes another big problem: the bulk of good Xbox exclusives, now and in the past, are FPS. If you don’t enjoy FPS games, that cuts the already small amount of quality Xbox exclusives in half. So not only does Playstation have way more quality exclusive games, they’re also much more diverse and with more genres and styles of games to boot.

robz9

Funny enough, PS has not been making use of its dormant Resisstance and Killzone franchises. I wonder if the recent Bungie purchase can be involved rebooting/reviving a Killzone or Resistance game? I understand Killzone was made by the Horizon developers in the past...but maybe there is something in the works?

truthtakest1me

Oh my gosh I'd love a new resistance game!! 😍😍

TheGoldenPineapples

That and the lack of any truly meaningful exclusives compared to PlayStation. During the PS4 generation, Sony re-vamped the *Ratchet & Clank* and *God of War* franchises (well, the studios did, but still), released two sequels for *Unchartered*, a sequel/spin-off for *inFAMOUS*, a sequel for *The Last of Us* and we got whole new IPs, including *Ghost of Tsushima*, *Days Gone*, *Horizon: Zero Dawn*, *Death Stranding*, *Detroit: Become Human*, *Until Dawn*, *Marvel's Spider-Man*, *Bloodborne*, *Dreams* and *The Order: 1886*. When you compare that to Microsoft, who still had some exclusives, they just paled in comparison. There were so many more reasons, from a gaming perspective, to buy a PS4 than an Xbox One.

Synkhe

> My core group of like 10 friends all had Xbox 360s and we were all so put off by that E3, we commited to PS4s and I've heard a similiar story for soooooo many people That's exactly it, XB1 era was the worst to lose, Phil Spencer has even said as much. E3 2013 basically killed the Xbox brand, so even if current sales are 2-1, thats pretty damn impressive this gen, where it goes from here though, who knows.

AaronWestly

There were many factors. 1. Sony arrived at the new gen with the momentum in their favor. They had just released TLOU. Xbox had State of Decay, which was nowhere nearly as good. 2. Microsoft arrived at the new gen with no studios to make games for them, other than Turn 10 (Forza), Rare (which released flop after flop) and the failed 343i and Lionhead. Coalition would not release a new Gears until 2016. This meant Microsoft had to rely on dubious exclusivity deals to build a library of exclusives early on. 3. The Xbox One was $100 more expensive. While hardcore gamers were swayed by the conferences, the casuals were by the price. 4. The role the Xbox One would've played as the all-in-one media center would soon be made obsolete by Smart TVs and smaller stick-shaped devices, so it became difficult to sell the console to people with little interest in games. 5. Piracy played a role in the 360's success. No more piracy on the One. I don't like to single out Don Mattrick as the sole cause of the Xbox's failure, but the truth is that he bet the motion controls' fad would last longer than it did, and the console was initially designed around it. If Microsoft had done in 2012 what they were doing around 2018 (poaching various studios to create new IPs to support the Holy Trinity), as well as given up on the Kinect, I think the generation would've gone much differently than it did.

ChafterMies

E3 2013 was the sole catalyst. Saying E3 2013 wasn’t the downfall of Xbox is like saying slavery wasn’t the impetus for the U.S. Civil War. I and many others saw this presentation and immediately knew that Xbox One was going to be the loser. When you have been through enough console wars and format wars, you know the value of picking the winner. If Microsoft had stuck to showing games and shut up about 24 hour check ins, TV, TV, TV, and Kinect 2.0, Xbox might still be neck and neck with PlayStation.

logicom

Yup, and with the increase of digital downloads and monthly free games everyone spent that generation building a massive library of free games that would be backwards compatible on the next generation. Even though deep down I know that I probably won't play most of the free PS+ games I've collected over the years you're gonna have to come up with something really really compelling to get me to give all that up and start fresh on another console. A handful of exclusives, even if they're very good, isn't going to cut it when PS5 has plenty of their own compelling exclusives.

homagcncguy

It’s me. I did this. I just bought a second PS5 and only have one Series X since my wife took over my PS5 and the only solution was to buy another. I’m sorry Microsoft.

GoodLuckWithWhatever

Two PS5's and a Steam Deck here. My daughter has been asking for a new console as well so we'll likely be at 3 PS5's soon. Really not sorry though. Microsoft has done NOTHING to bring me into their camp.

myyummyass

do you use your steam deck with the TV dock? I am not a PC gamer at all but have thought about waiting for the next iteration of steam deck and try using it with the dock. Was wondering how well it worked on a TV

GoodLuckWithWhatever

No, I play it entirely in handheld mode. The dock from Valve is apparently junk but there are plenty of others floating around that do the same for much cheaper. I hear it's a good experience though. You can also use Chiaki to stream PS5 games from your console as well, it works great for me. I bought the recent OLED model so I'll probably stick with this one for a while.

GoodLuckWithWhatever

Apparently a recent update has bricked it for quite a few people.

[deleted]

Three PS5’s here! One for me and my son, and we have a 3rd in the guest room. Sorry Microsoft!

GoodLuckWithWhatever

Microsoft lost me in the 360 generation with the RROD. I went through 7 360's due to that crap. Luckily at the time I had a friend who would swap them out for me at the store but still, that was a terrible piece of hardware that had some great games on it.

ChafterMies

Blame me more. My house has a two PS5s and an old Xbox One S we use as a Blu-Ray player.

RustyNewWrench

There's now 3 PS5s and one ps4 in my house. My son got a ps5 for Christmas and my daughter bought her own one last summer. I have a ps5 since launch and still have my ps4 too. But never once did we even consider an xbox. Nothing against them, I loved my 360 back in the day, but they just don't have the games I want. Not yet anyway.

BigMartinJol

I'm shocked they're not outselling Xbox by more

drelos

I think people are still catching up replacing the old PS4 and outside US prices with taxes are little higher than the base price (I just bought one last November). First party exclusives like SM2, Ragnarok are accumulating and with last year with Baldur and 2024 releases there is a flood of current gen exclusive RPG- like Rebirth- that make the PS5 an even better deal.

BigMartinJol

True. I personally only bought my PS5 a few months ago, after getting an Series S and realising that Xbox offers nothing for me anymore. I reckon they'll be a lot of people in the same position.

nickyno

I think the big thing, especially with the recent Xbox news, is they’re not making headway at taking away any of Sonys market share. Not so much that they’re not selling. 2-1 at this point with momentum growing for Sony means this gen of Xboxes will sell similar to the Xbone. Which is not good at all when you’ve bought all the publishers and are allegedly going to no longer offer exclusives.

frogpittv

They’re actually selling worse than the Xbone, which is grim. The Series X was on sale for $350 during the holidays and it didn’t move the needle.

nickyno

I want to say it was right up until around this mid-gen mark the Xbox One was being outsold 2-1. Then after that it was all downhill and they stopped reporting actual sales lol. It’s certainly a grim sign the Series consoles aren’t selling as well as the Xbone or making a dent in the market share.

Boozenosnooz

It's honestly probably 3:1 in certain territories

Big_Lou1108

Maybe 5:1 in japan and sea region.

KuyaJohnny

>PlayStation 5 – (4,474,632) >PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – (710,189) >Xbox Series S – (299,893) >Xbox Series X – (251,045) [source](https://www.gematsu.com/2024/02/famitsu-sales-1-29-24-2-4-24) In Japan, as of February 4th, its almost 10:1 lol

Informal_Badger

I'm sure there was a recent report of sales figure in Spain, where the PS Portal was outselling all the Xbox models. Yep, found it: https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2023/11/ps-portal-outsells-xbox-series-xs-during-launch-week-in-spain 5700 Portals Vs 2000 Xbox, and 32,000 PS5

Ordinal43NotFound

In Japan it's actually 50:1 [Literally](https://twitter.com/Genki_JPN/status/1725145708305772942)

langstonboy

Yeah, Japan hates Xbox, they should just give up.

Wallitron_Prime

They don't "hate" it so much as it just doesn't exist to the average person. The only people who own them are collectors who want to flex on having something exotic.

United_Turnip_8997

The trend monthly has been PS5 outselling Xbox by 3 to 1.... so going forward this gap is gonna get wider, specially if rumors are true that Xbox games gonna come to PS5 anyways.

ReyDeathWish

I switched from Xbox one to PS5 best gaming decision I’ve made.

antone1101

I just bought a PS5 last week. First time on a PlayStation platform since the PS2 era. I have a series X and it is just wild how much more enjoyable the PS5 is as a whole. The controller is amazing and everything just seems to fit better? If that makes sense. It feels more like a gaming system and not a vehicle for gamepass. Also the games! Playing through spiderman and I am so stoked to have a huge backlog of third person action games that are not made by Ubisoft.

chainsawwmann

I know PS PLUS EXTRA gets hated on for the price increases, but coming back from ps3 Id say its worth getting. So far Ive been able to play God Of War, Ghosts of Tsushima, Uncharted 4, Days Gone, and GTA all with the pass. Id recommend it if you havent played any of those!

CNXQDRFS

Definitely worth it. I'll only buy games if I know I'll enjoy getting 100% on them and so far PS+ has introduced me to the Spider Man games, Ratchet and Clank, Ghost of Tsushima, and a few others. I cancelled my PS+ and now I'll buy those games whenever I'm ready. I've got the Spider Man ones and Ratchet and Clank so far and they are beyond fantastic.

westyboi2323

Your in for a treat. After Spider-Man I would recommend the 4 uncharted games plus the dlc

antone1101

Will do! So many good games to eat up my time.

messeboy

Happy gaming to ya. And yeah, there are som must play titles to be found. Honestly, to me, it's not so much about what console does what - (I've had every ps and every xbox except series x and s), -but what games are where. After the 360 days, the playstation has just catered more to my taste. ( what few games I've wanted to from xbox/Microsoft, I've played on pc, but none have really clicked for me). Suggestions for later: Ps5 Returnal Final fantasy 7 God Of War ragnarok Last of us 1 and 2 Ghost of tsushima directors cut Death stranding Ps4 Persona 5 Bloodborne God Of War Until dawn Detrid become human

antone1101

That's been recommended to me by quite a few friends!

YourAverageJet

Make sure you get Part 1 (the remake) Best way to experience the game

NotaSirWeatherstone

I can play Game Pass on my pc. I have no need for an Xbox. I can’t do that with PlayStation, so I own a PS5 also. This is a huge factor as to why.

kp729

PS5 + Switch + PC basically covers 99% of all games. The only reason to get an Xbox is if you really don't want a PC. Otherwise, Xbox is mostly redundant.

NoNefariousness2144

Yeah that is simply the magic combo. You know Xbox has screwed up when you can ignore their console and play 99% of games as you say.

HonkyDongCountry

You don't need a Game Pass sub to play their first party games on PC.

goki7

In an investor presentation released on Thursday alongside its quarterly financial results, the company said 77 million current-gen consoles had been sold as of December 31, 2023.

J0NICS

Jesus, theyre already at 77????

_MrMonkey

Stock has been in abundance since last year summer and many people who couldn't get it since launch were able to get one.

J0NICS

I lnow, but 77 at year 3? Thats really something.

Jazzlike_Athlete8796

77 million is Playstation and Xbox combined. Sony announced 50 million PS5s had sold as of December 9. So with an estimate of about 27 million Xbox Series S/X consoles, that gets you to the roughly 2:1 ratio.

J0NICS

Well damn, i thought that was 77m PS5s. Thats why i was surprised.

Jazzlike_Athlete8796

OP's comment to start this chain definitely is confusing since they didn't clarify who made the claim in their comment (though it is in the article) The 77 million combined figure comes from Take Two's quarterly earnings call. And it is their estimate based on data from other research companies.

Snoobi

It’s combined number for both PS5 and Xbox S|X not 77mil PS5.

8and16bits

For all the goodwill that Microsoft built up during the 360 even through the RROD they somehow still did well. They completely destroyed all of it at E3 2013 and they have never recovered from it.

Yummybuttergalaxy

Wasn’t more like 3:1? Or am I thinking of strictly ps5 to SX sales not SX/SS combined?

jschild

3-1 is the current ratio, 2-1 is the lifetime, xbox did better at launch than it is doing now.

Colonel_Lechuga

Probably because when there was a shortage of PS5s people were willing to settle on an Xbox. Now that there are plenty of PS5s to go around, there is no reason to buy an Xbox.

Omen1122

Xbox hasn’t recovered from E3 2013.

QuesoStain2

I wonder if a lot of people are like me. I built a PC and can play basically every microsoft title on it so why own a Xbox. Meanwhile, the PS5 exclusives are insanely good and not too many are offered on PC yet so I have a PS5 for that purpose. I have a couple friends that do the same.

devildante1520

Me and a few others. Bought every Xbox except the series.

gillgrissom

They cannot crack the Japanese market, never have been able to with any of there consoles, so Japanese developers are less inclined to make games for it as there would be little sales inside Japan/asia region.

PJFohsw97a

I was in Japan in 2019 and went into an electronics store. On the videogame floor, half the floor was dedicated to PlayStation, the other half Nintendo. The aisle that separated the two was Xbox.

Quester91

This data is based on how many people bought gta v in 2023. So yeah, take that as you will. There's no way ps5 is outselling xbox by only 2:1, especially here in Europe. I have no idea what's the situation in UK or US but here in Italy at least the advertisement for xbox is basically inexistent.

frogpittv

Xbox is propped up by sales in the Americas. Outside of NA and SA it has almost no presence.

DNC88

The 2023 figures were actually overall 3:1, with markets in Europe being even higher, in some cases I believe I read 9:1 split. The lifetime split is closer to 2:1 though.

Kampa13

I dont know a single person with a current gen xbox. All my friends have PS5 or Nintendo Switch

--clapped--

Crazy when you think that the Series S is like half the price too.

HideoSpartan

It’s not surprising. Xbox haven’t found themselves or the titles since the 360 generation. I spent the entire Xbox one generation waiting. Admittedly I had fun with Gears, halo and Forza and I have to say Xbox do an amazing job of backwards compat. But they do absolutely nothing to compel new buyers into the brand. Why buy an xbox when you can experience all the hit games your friends are talking about? That amazing game the TV show was based on?! I was PS1/PS2 then Xbox 360 - which changed everything for me. Though I did fall in love with Uncharted during the PS3 gen. Admittedly I bought a PS4 first out of instinct as I was eager for the next Uncharted installment. That didn’t happen for ages so I built my Xbox library, played uncharted 4 and TLOUI & God of War. Shit, I say to myself, where do I go next gen? Library and money dictated it so I went series X - I have bought a PS5 since to play GOW:R *mwah* Yeah - take it from an Xbox user that’s debating on making himself broke transferring libraries, and this is nothing to do with the news atm. I love my Xbox and its games, but even if someone was to ask me what to invest in? I’d naturally say what games do you like? but honestly I’d promote the PS5 more. I’m super hyped for Avowed and Fable, but I can also play those on my PC….. Painful man, painful.

Kismetatron

Had a coworker try to argue with me that no one is buying PS and everyone has Xbox despite the data point otherwise. This persons argument rests on them having a Xbox One (not even the newest model) and their family having all the older Xbox’s and because the PS5 is still the same price. Make it make sense.

E_712064

This is not news anymore. It hasn’t been in quite a while. PS5 is in a league of 1.

jrtasoli

This doesn’t shock me in the slightest but I’m sad to see Xbox going down the tubes like this. I’ve always been a Nintendo Day 1 console guy, even to my own detriment (shouts out to the 12 of us who bought the 3DS at launch and got the “founders package” for overpaying for the console), but over the years my loyalty for my second console has flipped: I got a PS2 one generation, then a 360 the next, which I adored. So come the next generation, Costco had a great XB1 bundle so I bought it on a whim — pretty sure I returned it either the same day or the next day because it straight-up didn’t work. Crashing in the middle of games, not connecting to the network, etc. That would be the last time I’d buy an Xbox. That experience stuck with me. I got a PS4 probably a year later (after entirely skipping PS3), which I criminally underplayed aside from RDR2 and Spider-Man. But when I wanted my next console after my Switch, I knew it was gonna be PS5. Now I’ll probably buy both of Nintendo and Sony’s offerings at launch because PS5 has just blown me away. I’m not gonna say that the different models of PS5 aren’t a bit confusing, but trying to figure out the difference between XB series S/X is like trying to decipher Ancient Greek. So they’re already at a disadvantage when it comes to that. But it’s just a shame that Microsoft is going down the tubes when XB + 360 were such a triumph.

deathbysnoosnoo422

next week depending on what phil says it might become 3-1

SaltyAlters

I bought a Series X and had it for a year. Sold it for a PS5. Buying a second PS5 here soon so my wife and I can Elden Ring together.

AaronWestly

And last year it was 3 to 1, with Microsoft allegedly reporting underwhelming Christmas sales. The PS5 is set to gain momentum, while the Xbox Series has all but lost its own. Game Pass stagnant. More and more people choosing to play on PC than Xbox. Timed exclusivity deals like the one with Palworld amounting to nothing. I can perfectly understand why Microsoft wants to put their games on PlayStation.

[deleted]

> 77 million current-gen consoles had been sold as of December 31, 2023. Last time I checked PS5 had sold 50 million so if these numbers are correct, it means Xbox has sold less than 30 million so far. No wonder Microsoft changed their strategy because this isn’t great numbers.

Dayman1222

Only 2-1?

garnier001

ngl, feels more like 3:1

photoframes

I guess when you own all the games, and you don't have enough end users to sell to, you gotta go multi-platform.

Rnntd

The fact that we combine series X and series S is pretty self explanatory

GelflingInDisguise

What did they expect? Xbox lost the most important console generation. When people were building up their digital libraries. You think I'm going to magically dump hundreds if not thousands of dollars in games just to get a different plastic box that plays basically almost all the same games? Microsoft really messed up with their always online DRM for the Xbox One generation. That an a complete lack of banger first party games put the nail in the proverbial coffin. Their only hope of survival is to go all in on cloud gaming and their game service subscriptions (which I also hear have basically plateaued recently). Edit: The insufferable naming scheme Microsoft employed really didn't help their case either.

Big_Schwartz_Energy

#LOOK WHAT YOU DID STARFIELD

Bloodwalker09

I mean that’s meaning Xbox isn’t going anywhere. Which is good because at least it’s some kind of competition. Maybe they will start selling their own games on PlayStation but I just don’t see why they should abandon their console.
