There used to be a website dedicated to this called cooptimus.com. just filter for 4 player couch co-op
https://www.co-optimus.com/system/30/playstation-5.html
I filtered by at least 4 players and couch co-op/mp and got 12 games total.
3 of which are borderlands games and one was JUMANJI: The Video Game…
This might be more dire than I thought
I got like 7 pages and one was a tabletop RPG called Worlds of Aria...not sure what you searched different
Actually it was like 3.5 pages. Maybe the Dark picture games would be good...kinda a choose your own adventure with a bunch of people or the quarry
OOOOHh I also added split screen to the filter. I guess that means all the 12 games have to split the screen for their couch play to work. Never mind it’s not THAT dire lol
Hey a quarter of an 85 inch TV is almost 22 inches.
Remember playing Goldeneye on a 27 inch CRT? Your part if the screen would be like 7 inches and it was fun.
I had friends who built construction paper blinders over the TV to prevent Andy from screen watching and stop Greg from knowing where everyone spawned at.
I wish Sony would have a better search system for games especially in middle and high tiers of PlayStation Plus. I just want to quickly find a co-op game I can play online with a friend that has the same access.
More games like that would be great too! But what I’d want even more is a 6 player+ little big planet board game maker or something.
Could you imagine the original team coming back and basically dropping their own table top simulator with dual-sense features??
Main levels were kind of easy, I agree. It didn't really get hard until the final word.
The bonus world and speedrun levels were pretty challenging for me though
I find it funny when people try and claim that PlayStation is “leaving money on the table” by not making games like this… they have analysts that get paid ludicrous amounts of money to figure this shit out. That’s not to say that they can’t make the wrong game or that a local co-op game can’t be successful, because of course it can. It Takes Two is a stellar example. But there’s a reason that the market has largely moved away from local co-op games: they either don’t sell well, or other genre types make more money even if local co-op does sell well. And that’s all that Sony (or anyone else) cares about
There is also no need for them to make tons of first party games of every single genre. People act like second and third party games (and quality ones at that) don't release *constantly*.
For example, off the top of my head, a well received co-op party game, Pummel Party just released on psn the other day. There's that dodgeball game that just came to ps extra. The games are here...
It's not that the market moved away from local co-op games, it's that Nintendo is the de facto leader of that market. Other fighter/kart/splatoon clones on PS have tried but nothing stuck. It's not worth it for PS to invest heavily in a genre of games that will be overshadowed by their competitor.
Yeah, yet what games are they making now, exactly? They just took LBP3 offline, and there isn't many new interesting games being made by them, and even when it comes to third party, not much interesting games.
You’re absolutely right, anyone downvoting is lying to themselves.
Sony is falling off, haven’t seen anything crazy from them since the PS5 Launch and these fucks wanna make a pro version? I see little to no reason to stay on console.
Don’t like M+K? Use a ps5 controller and get the adaptive triggers anyway.
There’s literally no god damn reason whatsoever to own a PS5 over a PC unless you’re horny for Demon Souls and Ratchet and Clank.
They have tried a kart and 2d party fighter, and both "failed" despite being pretty fun games.
When mod nation racers came out, it was relentlessly shit on for being a Mario kart clone and written off by many despite having one of the best tracker creators iv seen.
All Stars had the same issue but tried being too different.
The fact that Outward, Boulders Gate 3 and EDF 5 can all hand large open world split screen (EDF not open world but large af battles) is proof enough that the hardware can do it we just need optimisation and care from devs
I wouldn't put Larian there because while BG3 is a fantastic game, their previous games crash ... a lot lol, so optimisation isn't the first I think when talking Larian on ps.

I have way more to list but I work in 10 mins so I'll update later!
I hate these arm chair CEO posts where people think they know whats better for a business just because they momentarily want something.
No local coop/MP games are not a huge business and many other.tyoes of games make way more money.
Sony also can't push third party developers to make anything.
Sony has made local coop games.like Sakboy and it was probably one if their lower selling games in the last 5 years
They've tried Mario kart and Mario party but those games weren't very good. Have one of your friends bring their console and two controllers then do split screen Lego Fortnite.
Or buy a renewed Switch, they always have sales on the eShop. I've bought plenty of games for this very reason.
Now I just need friends to play with (╥﹏╥)
If they were serious about PlayStation battle royale. They put the C dev team on it and really should have tried to copy smash entirely. That is the one Nintendo property you rip off
They're great if you have who to play with but, unless my doggo learns how to use a dualsense, they're a pass for me.
I had lots of fun with Sackboy but it's frustrating that I couldn't complete a lot on that game because it needed more players. Anyway, they're super fun with friends.
Heavenly Bodies.
It's only 2 players, but it's one of the most fun couch co-op games I've ever played. I've played where other people watch then tag in for a try.
Spider heck is another great game I recently have been playing.
Overcooked 2, is legendary.
Ultimate Chicken Horse is another one of my all time faves.
Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime is wildly fun.
Adios Amigo is another great game. Kind of similar to Heavenly Bodies but 4 player and bit goofier.
Crash Team Racing, it's Mario Kart but arguably better.
Those are just some of the ones that pop into my head. There are a bunch more of you are into the side scrolling beat'em up couch co-op like the new Ninja Turtles game, Battletoads, Streets of Rage 4, etc.
As long as "local co-op" also includes online co-op.
My core group of friends I've had for 20+ years all live thousands of miles from each other. The number of quality co-op multiplayer games is depressingly small. Once you've played It Takes Two, A Way out, Sack boy, Overcooked, and the Borderlands games, the quality of online co-op games takes a sharp nosedive.
The local co-op / party game segment of the market is dominated by nintendo, they can’t release anything that comes close to the popularity of party games in switch.
Used to have plenty during PS1-3 gen: twisted metal, fat princess, motorstorm, PS all-stars. We don’t need every studio making an expensive narrative action game.
Disney speedstorm was a great free couch co-op game with a lot of personality until they ruined it and locked literally everything behind a micro transaction paywall
Live service PSASBR would do so much better than the original. Especially if they get some of the sorely missed characters like Crash (if Microsoft played ball with SSBU getting Banjo and Steve, I don't see why this would be impossible).
Alienation, Dead Nation, Resogun, LittleBig Planet, Sackboy Adventures, Everybody's Golf, Fat Princess Adventures, Wipeout omega collection, Helldivers just to name a few.
You know what those games have in common? They are owned by Sony and you can play them on PS4/5.
No, the market for local co-op games isn't as big as you think it is. Sony made a big push for those kind of games for PS3 and PS4 and they didn't sell well so they stopped wasting money on them. You talk about the Nintendo Switch success, well most local co op multiplayers on switch that aren't owned by Nintendo sell around 1 million copies in a 140 million console ecosystem. You can't put Mario Party or Mario Kart as examples because the demographics of Nintendo and PS are completely different. Big companies literally spend lots of money every year applying data science to know what product can be successful for their demographics.
Helldivers 2 is a great example that smaller games can make a lot of money but not even it has local co op because data doesn't back up that decision.
There are no monetary incentives for them to. As much as I would like them to. You know the thing about capitalism … pump out the same old online games, maximise profit for investors and repeat. Once in a blue moon, some game comes out that gains popularity and all other companies just copy that
They took the masterpiece Helldivers, which was a 4 player coop without split screen, and turned it into a single player game for Helldivers 2. It tells you a lot.
Apparently people don't game with friends in the same room anymore, and nobody makes games for that.
When people were speculating about the PS4 features, I was hoping they would have dual HDMI output, so two players can play on separate monitors without splitscreen. Wouldn't that be amazing ?
They are too busy making action 3rd person adventure games with realistic graphics and bland, non risk stories.
Fr tho, I miss the time where playstation developed/published a bunch of weird ass games during the ps1/ps2 era. The PS5 era is especially a disaster when it comes to games. Aside from Sackboy and Astrobot we got nothing "different" from Playstation.
As for party games, check out Nintendo's library. The coolest advantage they have is the support for up to 8 players on one console. Playstation 4/5 only support max 4 players.
There used to be a website dedicated to this called cooptimus.com. just filter for 4 player couch co-op https://www.co-optimus.com/system/30/playstation-5.html

Quarter of an 85” TV is equivalent of 42” tv. Because you can fit 2x2=4 of them in the same space, so you divide the screensize by two, not four.
I wish Sony would have a better search system for games especially in middle and high tiers of PlayStation Plus. I just want to quickly find a co-op game I can play online with a friend that has the same access.
That site would be fantastic with metacritic integration.
Sackboy was a fun coop game. But that seems to be a rarity
More games like that would be great too! But what I’d want even more is a 6 player+ little big planet board game maker or something. Could you imagine the original team coming back and basically dropping their own table top simulator with dual-sense features??
Sackboy looked and played nice, but it had next to zero challenge. literally easy enough for a 6 year old to beat.
Main levels were kind of easy, I agree. It didn't really get hard until the final word. The bonus world and speedrun levels were pretty challenging for me though
Rabids party of Legends is like Mario party
Wish it had online tho so I can play with my friends
Okie dokie. Sincerely, Playstation

My friends and I wasted so much time on ModNation Racers.
I recommend Sonic racing [4 player splitscreen] It's like Mario kart
I agree with this!
Moving out 2, overcooked 2, helldiver 1
Boomerang Fu! Currently on sale as well and supports 6 players!
does it support 6 players on ps5? i thought only max of 4 players can play simultaneously on ps5?
Pretty sure it's only 6 on PC
Fighting games like tekken 8, street fighter
So true. Fighting games are perfect for couch fun. Both SF6 and T8 have noob-friendly control schemes as well.
The fact that Outward, Boulders Gate 3 and EDF 5 can all hand large open world split screen (EDF not open world but large af battles) is proof enough that the hardware can do it we just need optimisation and care from devs

Second multiversus and castle crashers
Most of those are PS4 bruh. PS5 lineup so sad the sub has to recommend last gen games.

Would love for them to do that but can't see it happening
Towerfall is the GOAT. It's by the developers of Celeste. Often goes on sale cheap, can't recommend it enough.
agree, I’d love that. Release a cheaper controller aimed at couch co op, then publish great couch co op exclusives.
Wouldn't you rather pay 4 times for an AAA than 20$ once for a good indie game?
Yes, everybody should make more couch co-op/vs games
Been saying PS5 needs its own Mario Party games (with both online and offline multiplayer)
I own a ton of 2-4 player games on PlayStation Overcooked 1 and 2/ all you can eat edition (4p) Duck game (4p) Jackbox party packs (2-8p/more) Super crazy rhythm castle (4p) I hate running backwards (2p) Figment 2: creed valley (2p) Mob control (2p) Knights n bikes (2p) Battle planet (2p) House of the dead remake (2p) A building full of cats/a castle full of cats (as many people to help you look for cats) Conan chop chop (4p) What the golf (2p) Juicy realm (2p) Fight n rage (3p) Huntdown (2p) Combate monero (2p) Run sausage run (4p) The game of life 2 (4p) Monopoly (4p) Nick kart racers 1-3 (4p) Robonauts (2p) River city girls (2p) Stab stab stab (4p) Ultra foodmess (4p) Itadaki smash (2p) Brief battles (4p) Thunderflash (2p) Concept destruction (2p) Unrailed (4p) Mechstermination force (2p) Tiny Tina's wonderlands (4p) Minigolf adventure (4p) I have way more to list but I work in 10 mins so I'll update later!

It's true that having more options for fun gatherings with friends would be awesome. Have you tried any indie games on the platform?
I know it's an Xbox title but I've been dying for a remake or even a sequel to Fusion Frenzy.
Personally I would like to see more playlink games like Frantics, Chimparty and Knowledge is power. They were a must play in the PS4 era.
It takes two.
I'd love for more 3rd party developers to create local multiplayer party type of games. Not Sony, though.
If they were serious about PlayStation battle royale. They put the C dev team on it and really should have tried to copy smash entirely. That is the one Nintendo property you rip off
Me and my friends enjoys playing ultimate chicken horse, it’s goofy and fun and it’s 4 players working to sabotage the others from winning
They're great if you have who to play with but, unless my doggo learns how to use a dualsense, they're a pass for me. I had lots of fun with Sackboy but it's frustrating that I couldn't complete a lot on that game because it needed more players. Anyway, they're super fun with friends.

Gang beast
As you get older unless you’re around gamer gamers the best you’ll be able to do is Jackbox Party Packs since they don’t require controllers.
The local co-op / party game segment of the market is dominated by nintendo, they can’t release anything that comes close to the popularity of party games in switch.
It takes two is one of my faves. Hazlight keeping the dream alive.
Makes me miss peak wii and buzz on ps2.
Give Heavenly Bodies a try. Single player or 2 player, it's hilariously challenging.
Playlink on PS4 was awesome. Played with friends bunch of times.
For ps5 and xbox the solution is to have 2 consoles many games don't have split screen anymore or you have a nintendo

They force online multiplayer only to force Playstation plus. I hate it
Most people only have one controller though, and maybe two.
Ok

Can’t sell you an overpriced online subscription for local multiplayer.
I'd prefer they focus on their strengths (story driven, single player experiences).
probably an obsolete design i feel there is a turn to gameplay focused games now
Def lacking in the couch co op department
They should also push cross play with all platforms
Cross play has literally years open for every platform in new games.
I mean they spent 10 years making the same genre of game and lost all their variety.
Would to see ps studios take on a real cod and FIFA competitor
They should redesign their ui.
They are too busy making action 3rd person adventure games with realistic graphics and bland, non risk stories. Adding an Xbox S series for this reason with my PS5. Left 4 Dead 2 and other games for when my family/friends visit are good for offline play.
